It does bring up the issue that OOTP is going to have in future though if Markus can't negotiate a reasonable license with MLB. People want to be able to play a "real MLB" game without having to do any work, and if OOTP can't give them that then they may well not buy it.

Don't disagree. Simply saying it's still more than possible to do the real MLB and "I can't do it" is inaccurate.

I follow MLB from a bit of a distance. I used to subscribe to MLB.TV and MiLB.TV, but I let that lapse in favor of catching a team I like to watch (Oakland, Cincinnati, Atlanta) when I get the chance in a national game or free game of the day (and can listen to Atlanta on radio anyway). Sometimes I listen to the Sacramento River Cats as I go to sleep with the free game audio through the iOS app. I almost never attend any games these days.

At first it really bothered me that MLB did this. However, now I feel like I just don't care much. The real power of OOTP is that you don't have to tie it into existing leagues and structures. It can do that, but it can be anything I want it to be. If MLB does not want their teams/nicknames/etc in front of me when playing a game, then that is their loss. It isn't mine. I can take it or leave it.

OK, I've seen a few posts that have kind of irked me.

I understand a ton of us play under a time constraint...

There is still NO WAY IN H-E-double hockeysticks that the nicknames being gone (even for the full minors) is THAT big a deal!?!?

I mean seriously, do you KNOW how many times I've added at least 3 levels of minors to a league this year making quickstarts to make things easier for the community? It takes MAYBE an hour to do with the wiki for "Minor League Baseball Leagues and Teams" open.

A helluva lot better than paying extra or having to deal with MLB's grubby paws killing the game.

This is by no means a crack on everyone, but sometimes, the laziness on this planet is, quite frankly, ASTOUNDING.

I spend 2 - 4 hours on creating most of my leagues and only manage to play maybe 10% of them.

I agree, but also realize that there's probably a significant amount of people who hit the MLB quickstart link on the home screen, pick a team and go. Seeing the nicknames disappear after having them yesterday can be a big deal to some. Not everyone is used to going through the setup process like many of us have become accustomed to.

Which is why I said it definitely doesn't apply to everyone. I obviously understand that it sucks... and though it doesn't seem like I do very often I do play MLB games, too.

I get that part of my frustration comes from probably being a top 10 typist in the world and being able to do it quickly but...

Quitting the game? Going to a previous version with less features? I'd play with the Motown Orange KittyKittys first.

True but it's not like some member of the community won't just create a quickstart on their own. The MLB's license only applies to the things OOTP officially puts out but not community modifications. They have no legal jurisdiction there. It's just because that hasn't happened yet people are freaking out.

Actually as a matter of fact if no one has done it by Monday I'll go and rename all the teams for everyone.

Speaking of things that irk -- sometimes the level of self-righteous condescension on display in these forums is ASTOUNDING.

Don't need patronizing lectures on what "can" and "cannot" be done, thanks.

Losing names and logos for all MLB and MiLB teams is indeed a Big Deal for some of us. I put *plenty* of time as it is setting up my leagues. Don't want to spend yet more hours data-entering and cross checking everything to make sure logos, uniforms, stadiums, etc. etc. match up.

Then don't make stupid blanket statements that are inaccurate on their face. Don't be pissy with me for your mistakes.

Exactly, that's your opinion. And someone else's opinion is that this ruins the game for them. Is that opinion extreme? Maybe, but there's no reason those two opinions can't exist.

Exactly. Anyone jumping ship should hold on for a few days or a week to see what pops up in the mods section of these boards. Unfortunately I only get 20-30 minutes per day with OOTP, or I'd post a quickstart here tonight. I'm sure someone will do it long before I get time to sit down and do it.

I may sound like a prick but fully intended to do this as well.

Stepping outside of lawyer and accountant land for a minute, why would MLB want anybody playing a baseball game that did not make the player think about MLB's league, teams, and players? They seem to take the approach that they are the big gorilla and must be paid off in order to move ahead. For too long they have operated with the console game mindset, which is that the game won't sell without their stamp of approval (ie, paying them a ransom). That is mostly true for console games, but I don't know that it correlates as well to games like OOTP.

For years I've played Football Manager/Championship Manager with some leagues/tournaments/teams (and even players) not having their real names. I used to want to change them, but over time I began to care less and less. I play the game out of the box and it is those who refused to license to them that suffer by not having me grown accustomed to the proper names of their clubs/competitions. If I knew what they really were, I might try to watch them or follow them. Since I don't know, over time I begin to not care at all. Apply this to Front Office Football and Cricket Coach also. I used to want to change things to their proper names, but over time it is the game play that matters more than the names attached to things. I can forget that it is even a simulation of the supposed league that refused to join in eventually.

I'm just not going to bother downloading the update then, since there are no real fixes that I need (I don't use the 3D feature) then I don't really need this.

No, the opinion can absolutely exist.

What got me a bit irked (since thats our word for the thread) is when people are saying the game can't/doesn't do what they want. That is false. You just have to change some nicknames?

Well part of it is that it's a small market. Most gamers looking for a baseball game for for action oriented games. Americans hate having to think (any and all present company as an exception of course).

To be completely honest the thing that shocks me most is how long we got away with all this without a license.....

It's not a big deal for a lot of existing players (although clearly it is for some, as this thread has showed). It may well stop some people buying the game in future though.
