If I can get some time, I'll see what I can do. I wanted to do something similar for a solo league idea and maybe that's the best solution.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

So I tried a few things.

  • Suspensions didn't work well because of the issue of the guys staying on the 40-man roster and all that. That's not going to be a viable way to do it. Plus, it is very time consuming.
  • I tried creating a storyline with a ridiculously high frequency, but it still only caught one guy over the course of the entire war period.
  • I tried creating it as an injury, but it didn't come up nearly often enough. Maybe if I set the injury frequency really high, but then I'd get too many real injuries. Also, it would catch the older, more injury prone guys more than the younger guys, which is the opposite of what I want.
  • Mass-injuring guys is very time consuming. That's the main sticking point, but it's a huge one. If only injured days could be part of the roster import/export!
  • Mass-retiring guys seemed to work fairly well, although I had to make sure to keep track of who I was retiring so I could bring (most of) them back. The biggest drawback to this was that contract info and the player's team of origin was lost. However, since that information is available as part of the roster import/export, it is possible to save it ahead of time and send guys back to their teams, if you keep good records. Also, even though it's faster than mass-injuring and suspensions, sitting there clicking on checkboxes for countless minutes does not feel like time well spent.
Conclusion: The game doesn't really have a good way to handle the draft, particularly the WWII draft, which had a huge impact on baseball and some of its top tier players at the time. While it's clearly not a top priority, it's definitely something that would be worth making some adjustments for, some of which could be very minor. For instance:
  • Adding injured days/reason to the roster import/export would let us mass-injure guys at will, which, while crude, would get the job done. Probably the simplest solution.
  • Having some kind of built in, adjustable "draft period", where we could define the current era as wartime, would probably be a major addition, but it would be ideal.
  • Having some kind of "inactive" list, which would function a lot like a disabled list, but for non-injured guys. It's a little iffy, since if you just add it, it would become a means of gaming the game (e.g., instead of putting a guy on waivers to send down, you inactivate him), so this would require some thought, perhaps more than it would be worth.
  • Implementing world peace, going back in time to head off all wars, and making subtle changes to the human genome that cause us to be less prone to starting new wars. All we are sayin'...

I think your originally point seems like the best option

Have it in league settings where you can have a Wartime setting, which will force the game to grab younger guys (30 and under with a higher % the younger you go)

This is IN the system already, as I have guys get drafted in the 1940 timeframe, it just needs to be boosted

Since you're mentioning "clicking checkboxes for minutes" -- use your filters to cut the pool down to what you want and then use the box at the top that will check all players -- and then just take the ones you want OFF checked, that would cut down on time. Some people don't know that there is the "check all players listed" box on these screens.

Here's a screenshot of where I mean:

Hope that helps save you some time.

Oh yes, I definitely made heavy use of that. But the time when I really had to sit there clicking was bringing guys back from retirement.
