100% take the shortstop. A guy with a stick like that who plays gold glove level defense at a premium position and can also steal bases is a potential MVP level superstar. Plus hes already somewhat developed and is a switch hitter on top of it all. No way you can pass that up.

Everybody saying draft the shortstop are absolutely correct. A shortstop with that kind of talent level, if he reaches it, is a once-in-a-decade or perhaps even more rare of a player. Top of the charts contact with above average power and discipline, plus-plus defense, speed... if you want a pitcher, draft the SS and flip him for two top pitching prospects in a couple years.

While I know it's almost impossible to find a top pitching prospect late, the SS basically looks like he'll hit .340 with 20/20 or 30/30 potential, while playing gold glove D. The pitcher has to be 90+ in all 3 pitching categories with at least 3+ pitches also in the 90+ range for me to think about picking him ahead of a hitter like that.

I'm taking that SS.
His defense will make your pitchers better and he'll bat in an important spot in your line-up...soon. |

quick question
How often do you get a 10 WAR pitcher in HS in AI generated drafts (sorry can't remember)? with Feeders i see 4 WAR and pick at 1.1 any day (well based on FIP, but this is not provided in view above).
(just trying to adjust).... my main issue with picking the SS, is next year with the 10th pick, i would still be able to pick an all-star bat, but not such an impact pitcher from what i have seen so far in OOTP solo, where AI picks pitchers with the first 10 picks... ... |

i agree with Defense. but i get gold glove winners from College in the 5th round. i don't get Aces material in the 2nd round.... (note that i also do not sign major FA, only 3rd tier ones, so i rely on draft in my dynasty, so this might affect my view)....

While the pitcher looks to be quite good, the SS looks like an inner circle HOF type player if he develops. He's a switch-hitter on top of that. I'd take the SS with no hesitation.

Optimal draft strategy is a million dollar question even in the real world.
I think we can all agree that in the first round (possibly even supplemental), you draft the best player out there at the moment. You don't pass up the next Babe Ruth reasoning that you already have outfielders. My experience with OOTP: Average hitters can flourish with good coaches. Looking at the superstars on my team, the original scouting report the day I drafted them wouldn't blow you away. However, I have never noticed fielding stats improve. Mediocre SS ratings never become outstanding. Therefore, I HIGHLY favor fielding stats in the later rounds. |

I would definetely go with the SS Demayo.
- he is 21 yrs old and developing as a star vs the SP who is younger and could easily go south - aside from the developing - but quite advanced - impact bat the SS already is a dynamite def SS and has speed to burn vs the SP whose ratings (stamina and 3rd pitch) could easily end up slotting him in to a bullpen arm instead of a starter I generally go pitching over position. I find it easier to monitor a pitcher's development then a hitter for some reason. I often use my excessive pitching depth to acquire the assets I need for my big league team. As stated the AI loves Starters which is great for trade value. That being said the SS in this scenario is just too good to pass up. Hs ceiling and floor appear higher then the SP. |
