American League News Milwaukee Brewers at Oakland Athletics Leadoff hitters Gorman Thomas (.300, 7 SB) of Milwaukee and Oakland's Bill North (.300, 5 SB) each have four hits, but it is the A's that take the win 4-3 on a three-run home run from Sal Bando (.333, 5 HR, 16 RBI) and a solo shot from Don Baylor (.263, 1 HR, 7 RBI). North hits a pair of doubles in the win. Vida Blue (3-1, 3.48 ERA) earns the win and Rollie Fingers (3 SV, 0.00 ERA) gets the save - his 119th of his career, moving him into 14th on the all-time career saves list. Jim Colborn (0-2, 5.49 ERA) goes the distance in defeat. Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox Rod Carew (.397, 3 RBI) has his second straight four hit day for the Twins as Minnesota recovers from an eight-run second inning from the Red Sox to win the game 10-9 in 14 innings when Butch Wynegar (.282, 2 HR, 5 RBI) gets his fourth hit of the day - a solo home run off of Boston closer Bill Lee (0-2, 4.05 ERA). Dan Ford (.264, 2 HR, 13 RBI) scores two runs and drives in three - two of which come on his second home run of the season. Minnesota uses seven pitchers in all, with Vic Albury (2-1, 0.00 ERA) pitching three scoreless innings to get the win and Ray Corbin (1 SV, 0.00 ERA) getting the save. Carl Yastrzemski (.277, 2 HR, 8 RBI) hits a two-run home run, Rick Burleson (.250, 4 RBI) has three hits and two runs batted in, and Cecil Cooper (.231, 10 RBI) hits a three-run double as part of his three hits in the loss. Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles The Baltimore winning streak reaches five games as Mark Belanger (.261, 8 RBI) doubles home Bob Bailor off of Royals reliever Mark Littell (1-1, 4.50 ERA) in the bottom of the 10th inning to hand the Orioles a 3-2 win. Wayne Garland (2-0, 1.89 ERA) goes all 10 innings for Baltimore, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five. More of a concern for Kansas City is the condition of starter Marty Pattin, who left the game in obvious discomfort after facing just one batter. No word has come from the Royals organization on his status as of yet. Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians Indians starter Jackie Brown (2-1, 4.86 ERA) throws eight innings, striking out six and giving up one run and three hits - two to Pat Kelly (.269) - as the Tribe defeat Chicago, 2-1. Charlie Spikes (.294, 1 HR, 7 RBI) hits a two-run home run off of loser Bart Johnson (1-2, 3.34 ERA) to provide all of the Cleveland scoring. Johnson gets the complete game, allowing six hits, two runs and striking out three. Jim Kern (2 SV, 1.50 ERA) pitches a scoreless ninth for the save. New York Yankees at California Angels The Yankees continue to roll, defeating California 4-2 on a two-run single from Mickey Rivers (.286, 7 RBI) in the top of the ninth off of Angels starter Nolan Ryan (0-3, 6.41 ERA). Catfish Hunter (3-0, 2.23 ERA) goes eight innings, allowing eight hits and two runs, but just striking out one as New York wins their forth straight game and their eighth in their last nine games. Bill Melton (.227, 2 HR, 5 RBI) hits a solo home run and Dave Collins (.426, 5 RBI, 6 SB) has three hits for the Angels in the loss. Other AL Scores  National League News Los Angeles Dodgers at Montreal Expos Tim Foli (.478) had his fifth consecutive multi-hit game, but it was his run on a single by Rodney Scott (.500, 1 RBI) in the bottom of the 10th off of Dodgers reliever Stan Wall (0-1, 13.50 ERA) to give Montreal a 8-7 victory. Foli would score four runs on four hits. including two doubles and is hitting .609 (14-for-23) during the five game stretch. Thanks to a three-run home run by Steve Garvey (.353, 1 HR, 6 RBI) and a two-run blast by Steve Yeager (.262, 2 HR, 5 RBI), Los Angeles would score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead - only for the Expos to tie it up again in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back run scoring doubles by Jerry White (.237, 3 RBI) and Ellis Valentine (.317, 8 RBI). Gary Carter (.179, 2 HR, 8 RBI) also hits a two-run homer in the win. Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres Rick Monday (.222, 3 HR, 8 RBI) drives in four runs in a Chicago 6-2 victory, hitting a run-scoring single, an RBI double and a two-run home run - handing the Padres their fourth consecutive loss. Jose Cardenal (.431) scores two runs on a single and a triple while starter Brian Bonham (2-2, 2.84 ERA) gets his second complete game of the season, striking out six while surrendering six hits and two runs. San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates Pittsburgh gets a walkoff, run-scoring single from Dave Parker (.373, 5 RBI) off of Giants closer Dave Heaverlo (0-2, 5.06 ERA) in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Pirates a 2-1 victory over San Francisco. Parker goes 3-for-3 on the day for Pittsburgh while starter John Candelaria (3.86 ERA) goes seven innings, striking out seven while allowing five hits and one run while walking four but gets a no-decision. Sixto Lezcano (.283, 3 HR, 8 RBI) adds a two-run home run and starter Jim Slaton (1-1, 1.80 ERA) goes the full nine innings, striking out four and holding the Athletics to one run and four hits - one of which is a solo home run from Billy Williams (.270, 1 HR, 5 RBI). Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox Behind two-run home runs from Jim Rice (.386, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Rick Burleson (.267, 1 HR, 6 RBI) and a solo blast from Carlton Fisk (.208, 2 HR, 4 RBI), Boston defeats Bert Blyleven (2-2, 3.25 ERA) and the Twins, 8-3. Steve Braun (.271) has three hits and Craig Kusick (.217, 2 HR, 8 RBI) adds a solo home run for Minnesota in the loss. The win comes at a cost as the Red Sox lose designated hitter Carl Yastrzemski (.286. 2 HR, 9 RBI) for two weeks with a strained oblique in a collision with Bob Randall at second base. Boston would later announce they placed the 36-year old Yastrzemski on the 15-day disabled list and recalled 1B Deron Johnson (Has Not Played in AAA) from Triple A Rhode Island. Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles The Orioles win their sixth straight and nine of their last ten games with a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Doyle Alexander (2-0, 1.00 ERA) again pitches well, allowing nine hits, two runs and striking out four in eight innings as Baltimore takes over the AL East lead by a half game. Steve Busby (1-2, 5.00 ERA) gets a complete game in the loss, giving up six hits and three runs in eight innings, but six walks prove to be his undoing. Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers Two wild pitches and a fielding error by Ron LeFlore (1st) in the first inning lead to an unearned run and a two-run deficit for Tigers starter Vern Ruhle (0-3, 3.80 ERA) that they could not recover from as Detroit suffers a 2-1 loss. Steve Hargan (1-1, 10.22 ERA) combines with Joe Hoerner (2.25 ERA) to hold the Tigers to seven hits and one run over 8 2/3 innings. Other AL Scores  National League News New York Mets at Houston Astros Jon Matlack (3-1, 3.07 ERA) gets his first complete game of the season, holding the Houston offense to five hits and one run as the Mets gain an 8-1 rout over the slumping Astros. Dave Kingman (.255, 3 HR, 9 RBI) hits a solo home run and Wayne Garrett (.256, 2 HR, 6 RBI) adds a two-run home run as part of a four RBI day. Houston starter Joe Niekro (1-2, 5.79 ERA) walks seven in taking the loss on a pitching staff that ranks last in the National League in runs allowed. Starting third baseman Roy Staiger (.125, 0 HR, 2 RBI) was forced to leave the game in the seventh inning with what was later reported as just a back strain and he should not miss any time. St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves The Cardinals take the lead in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run home run from Garry Templeton (.326, 1 HR, 11 RBI) off of Bruce Dal Canton (1-0, 2 BS, 7.20 ERA), but still manages to lose the game as defensive replacement Dale Murphy (.200, 2 RBI) hits a walk-off, two-run single in the bottom of the frame off of St. Louis closer Al Hrabosky (0-2, 1 BS, 9.00 ERA). Rowland Office (.377, 1 HR, 8 RBI) hits his first home run of the year and Earl Williams (.275, 5 RBI) hits a double and two singles for the Braves. Templeton has three hits, drives in three runs and scores twice while Ted Simmons (.422) hits a pair of doubles in the loss for the Cards. Los Angeles Dodgers at Montreal Expos Nate Colbert (.571, 1 HR, 3 RBI) replaces an injured Pepe Mangual (.194) in the first inning, then proceeds to hit a single, double, and a three-run home run in the Expos 5-1 victory over Los Angeles. Starter Steve Renko (2-0, 1.67 ERA) allows one run and six hits in 8 1/3 innings to get the win. The loss goes to Tommy John (3-1, 2.70 ERA) who fails to come out for the fifth inning after allowing seven hits, two walks, and all five runs. No update has been given on Pepe Mangual, who left the game after beating out an infield hit in the first inning. Los Angeles Dodgers Los Angeles announces a series of roster moves today, designating left fielder Manny Mota and reliever Dave Sells for assignment and optioning catcher Steve Yeager (.262, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and right fielder Leron Lee outright to Triple A Albuquerque. As a result, the Dodgers purchased the contarct of catcher Ellie Rodriguez (.211, 5 RBI - AAA) and recalled reliever Dennis Lewallyn (1-0, 4.15 ERA), right fielder John Hale (.417, 6 RBI - AAA) and center fielder Glenn Burke (.160, 5 RBI). Lewallyn will have a setup role while the other three will assume spots on the bench. Philadelphia Phillies The Philles announces they have designated third baseman Tony Taylor (.000, 4 AB) and reliver Cy Acosta (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 3.1 IP) for assignment, purchased the contract of reliever John Montague (0-1, 2.45, 3.2 IP) and recalled left fielder Bobby Tolan (.254, 7 RBI) from Triple A Oklahoma City. Tolan will back up both first base and center field while Montague will be buried in the bullpen. Pittsburgh Pirates Pittsburgh optioned reliever Rick Langford to Triple A Charleston, purchasing the contract of reliever Odell Jones (1-1, 4 SV, 2.35 ERA - AA) from Double A Shreveport. Pat Dobson (3-0, 1.69 ERA) remains unbeaten, striking out six while allowing nine hits and one run in 8 1/3 innings. Ken Kravec (0-2, 8.49 ERA) fails to get through the fourth inning and takes the loss. Other AL Scores  National League News New York Mets at Atlanta Braves Atlanta right fielder Ken Henderson (.350, 15 RBI) goes 4-for-5 with a double, but the Braves lose to New York 6-5 when their ninth inning rally falls short. Marty Perez (.393, 3 RBI) hits a possible game-tying, two-run single with two-outs, but Henderson is nailed at the plate by outfielder John Milner to end the game. Perez and Rowland Office (.397, 9 RBI) each finish the day with three hits - each with a double and a pair of singles. Milner (.413, 7 RBI) has three hits on the day for the Mets, as does Joe Torre (.529, 3 HR, 10 RBI), who continues to carry a hot bat leading off the game with a solo home run. Craig Swan (1-0, 0.00 ERA) would replace an injured Jerry Koosman in the third inning and pitches 2 1/3 scoreless inning for the win. Initial reports on Koosman is that it is a back injury and he could be on the shelf up to 2 weeks. No word as of yet if this will land him on the disabled list. San Francisco Giants at Montreal Expos Montreal starter Don Carrithers (1-1, 4.09 ERA) gives up four hits and two unearned runs while striking out five hitters through seven innings as the Expos send San Francisco to their fourth straight loss, 3-2. A fielding error by second baseman Pete Mackanin (2nd) allows a two-run home run from Willie Montanez (.333, 2 HR, 8 RBI) for the only Giants runs. Rob Dressler (0-1, 4.85 ERA) pitches well in defeat, striking out five while allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) in seven innings. Pittsburgh Pirates Pittsburgh announces that while the injury suffered today to second baseman Rennie Stennett (.263, 1 HR, 3 RBI) has them concerned, they do not believe it to be very serious. Stennett left the game in the eighth inning on a force out at second and baserunner Cesar Geronimo collided with the him. Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros Chicago starter Geoff Zahn (1-0, 1.98 ERA) overcomes seven walks to shutout the Astros 2-0, sending Houston to their eighth loss in their last 10 games. Zahn allows seven hits while striking out only one in eight innings of work while Rick Monday (.246, 10 RBI) drives in both Cubs runs with three singles. Larry Dierker (1-3, 2.48 ERA) pitches well, giving up 11 hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in getting the complete game loss. Other NL Scores

Rollie Fingers (4 SV, 0.00 ERA) throws a scoreless ninth for his 120th career save, moving into 14th place on the all-time list. Ron LeFlore (.305) has three hits for the Tigers and Dave Lemanczyk (0-2, 8.76 ERA) strikes out six in the complete game loss. Chicago White Sox at Milwaukee Brewers Chicago outfielder Ralph Garr (.351, 9 RBI) delivers a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning off of Brewers closer Bill Castro (0-1, 0.00) to defeat Milwaukee 5-4 and send the Brewers to their seventh loss in their last ten games. Cleveland Indians at California Angels Ron Jackson (.222, 6 RBI) drives in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Cleveland starter Fritz Peterson (0-1, 3.38 ERA) to lead the Angels to a 3-1 win over the Tribe. Paul Hartzell (2-0, 3.05 ERA) allows just four hits and one run over eight innings to gain the win while closer Dick Drago (2 SV, 1.50 ERA) pitches an eventful - two hits, one walk - ninth for the save. Peterson gets a complete game in the loss, allowing seven hits and three run in eight innings. Dodgers starter Rick Rhoden leaves the game in the first inning with what initial reports are saying is abdominal soreness. Trainers say he should be fine in a few days and that he should make his next start. Los Angeles uses five relievers in place of Rhoden. Houston Astros The diagnosis has finally come in for left fielder Jose Cruz (.396, 0 HR, 5 RBI) as he looks to be out 1-2 weeks with a strained quadriceps. The Astros have placed him on the 15-day disabled list and have recalled outfielder Rich Chiles (.176, 0 HR, 4 RBI) from Double A Columbus. Chiles will be used very sparingly. New York Mets New York has confirmed that pitcher Jerry Koosman (2-0, 3.24 ERA) will miss the next two weeks with a herniated disk in his back. Boston Red Sox at Kansas City Royals Fred Lynn (.328) scores from third on a wild pitch from Royals reliever Mark Littell (1-2, 4.26 ERA) in the top of the ninth inning to give Boston a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Kansas City. John (4-1, 2.54 ERA) goes the distance in the win, striking out eight batters while allowing six hits and two runs, Davey Lopes (.282) scores twice on three hits, and Ron Cey (.206, 11 RBI) hits a bases-clearing three-run double for the Dodgers. Gary Carter (.196, 3 HR, 10 RBI) his a solo home run for Montreal in the loss. Cey would leave the game in the third inning after making a fantastic diving catch down the line, then tagging third for a game changing double play. While Cey seemed to be favoring his midsection leaving the field, no official word has been given on his status. Houston Astros Houston starter Joe Niekro (2-2, 4.62 ERA) asks to be removed from the game in the seventh after suffering what doctors describe as a dead arm. Gene Tenace (.235, 2 HR, 7 RBI) hits a solo home run and Larry Lintz steals two bases in the 10th inning to set up the Campaneris game winner. Bibby pitched will in the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out five. California Angels The Angels announce that reliever Dick Lange (0-0, 4.50 ERA, 4.0 IP) and third baseman Winston Llenas (.500, 2 AB) were optioned to Triple A Salt Lake City. Reliever Mickey Scott (0-2, 4 SV, 6.00 ERA, 6.0 IP - AAA) and right fielder Mike Easler (.212, 9 RBI, 85 AB - AAA) were recalled to take their place on the roster. While Scott may see a few innings in the pen, look for Easler to make an impact immediately, possibly in the DH role. Chicago White Sox Chicago announced that the playing days of Blue Moon Odom (0-0, 3.12 ERA, 8.2 IP) in a White Sox uniform could be over as he was designated for assignment and placed on waivers. Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants Doc Medich (3-0, 1.50 ERA) gets the Pirates back on the winning track, allowing six hits and one run while fanning five hitters in a 5-1 Pittsburgh victory over the Giants. New York Mets at San Diego Padres Nino Espinosa (2-1, 4.00 ERA) throw five no-hit innings en route to a 3-1 New York win over the Padres. Espinosa strikes out four and is charged with five hits and a run through eight innings while Dave Kingman (280, 5 HR, 15 RBI) blasts a 420-foot solo home run to lead the Mets. Bob Apodaca (8 SV, 2.19 ERA) pitches a scoreless ninth for his major league leading eighth save. "After extremely careful consideration, it has been decided that expansion in the foreseeable future is just not a possibility. Despite what has been declared in the press, there has not been deal reached with the city of Seattle and the lawsuit that they have filed is still ongoing." The move came as quite a surprise to the reporters in attendance, most of whom believed with the construction of the Kingdome, a franchise in Seattle in 1977 was a forgone conclusion. "Make no mistake, I feel for Seattle. But I believe suing Major League Baseball to grant them another franchise after they were just given a franchise not to many years ago is misguided in their frustration. If there is anyone to be sued, it should be Bud Selig and his organization for taking their team to Milwaukee. Now I am sure that they will counter and say that the league caused their calamity, but when it is all said and done - it was their mismanagement of team funds and promises unfulfilled on their part that lead them to bankruptcy and their ultimate downfall." When asked whether the other cities that were in the running for possible franchises had been notified, the Commissioner had this to say: "They were notified about five minutes ago. Look, the only other real possibility for an expansion club in 1977 was in Toronto and seriously, do we really need another franchise in Canada?" Cincinnati Reds Announced 2B Doug Flynn (.176, 1 RBI, 17 AB) was designated for assignment and placed on waivers. Recalled 37-year-old Vada Pinson (.000, 3 AB - AAA) from Triple A Indianapolis. Pinson can still run, so look for him only to be used in pinch running situations. San Diego Padres Due to the trade (see below), the Padres optioned C Bob Davis (.091, 11 AB) to Triple A Hawaii. Recalled LF Gene Locklear (.378, 12 RBI, 5 SB, 98 AB - AAA) from Triple A Hawaii. Locklear will be used sparingly in LF and possibly a pinch runner. Don't expect much else. Trade:. Summary: The Detroit Tigers trade 27-year-old minor league catcher John Wockenfuss and 24-year-old shortstop Charlie "Deranged" Clements to the San Diego Padres for 27-year-old center fielder Johnny Grubb. Wockenfuss will stay on the Padres roster as a backup to Fred Kendall and may be used late as a defensive replacement. Grubb will immediately help a Tigers offense and word from the organization has him batting in the leadoff spot.  At least for the short term, it looks like Detroit got the better end of the deal here. Wockenfuss has yet to play more than 35 games in a season and there is not a big enough sample size to see what he can do. Clements is listen as the #87 prospect, but being in Single A at age 24 leads to wonder if he will be a career minor leaguer. American League News Oakland Athletics at Baltimore Orioles Oakland runs their lastest winning streak to five games behind the pitching of Mike Torrez, who leads the As to a dominating 8-1 win over Baltimore. While Torrez (4-1, 2.81 ERA) strikes out six in the complete game win, giving up six hits and one run, Gene Tenace (.259, 11 RBI) hits a pair of doubles and drives in a pair of runs, and Bill North (.319, 6 RBI, 7 SB) brings in two more with a three hit day and two stolen bases. Mike Cuellar (2-2, 4.41 ERA) suffers the loss. California Angels at Milwaukee Brewers Angels starter Frank Tanana (3-1, 1.90 ERA) strikes out 10 hitters, conceding just four hits and three runs as California continues the Brewers losing woes with a 7-3 victory. The Angels amass 16 hits, with Dave Collins (.449) hitting a double and three singles and Mike Easler (.500. 1 HR, 2 RBI) hitting three singles and a solo home run, Gorman Thomas (.297, 3 HR, 11 RBI) hits a two-run home run for Milwaukee. Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees The Yankees offense was held in check by Minnesota starter Joe Decker (3-1, 3.12 ERA), who allows six hits while striking out six in eight shutout innings as the Twins get a 3-0 win at Yankee Stadium. Dan Ford (.235, 3 HR, 18 RBI) hits a three-run home run in the first inning off of New York starter Rudy May (3-1, 2.70 ERA) and Rod Carew (.374) has three hits to pace the Twins offense. Mickey Rivers (.315) hits a double and a triple for the Yankees in the loss. The Twins reported that DH Tony Oliva has cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple A Tacoma. Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox In a game that lasts just over five hours, backup catcher Bob Montgomery (.250, 1 RBI) singles home Fred Lynn off of Chicago reliever Pete Vuckovich (0-1, 2.70 ERA) in the top of the 16th to give the Red Sox a 5-4 hard fought victory. Montgomery replaced Carlton Fisk in the second inning after Fisk was injured at the plate trying to score from second on a double by Bernie Carbo (.114, 3 RBI) The White Sox had previously tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a run scoring single by Carlos May (.458, 3 RBI), which forces extra innings. Steve Dillard (.284), Cecil Cooper (.259) and Dwight Evans (.312) all have three hits in the game. Chicago announced that MR Blue Moon Odom has cleared waivers and will report to Triple A Iowa. Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers Ben Oglivie (.365, 5 HR, 16 RBI) hits a two-run double and a two-run home run, but the Tigers fall to Texas 6-5 in the bottom of the 12th inning when Mike Cubbage (.272, 14 RBI) singles home Toby Harrah with two outs off of Detroit reliever Jim Crawford (0-1, 3.38 ERA). Tom Grieve (.357, 7 HR, 26 RBI) has three hits, including a three-run home run, Roy Smalley (.275, 2 HR, 10 RBI) adds a solo homer, and Harrah (.308) scores three runs in the Rangers win. Bill Singer (2-1, 2.81 ERA) goes 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Gaylord Perry (4.11 ERA)to get the victory. The Rangers announced that MR George Stone has cleared waivers and will report to Triple A Sacremento. Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians Despite great pitching performance from Cleveland starter Dennis Eckersley, the Tribe loses 3-2 in 10 innings as George Brett (14 RBI) scores Cookie Rojas on a ground out up the middle off of new Indians closer Stan Thomas (0-1, 9.00 ERA) to give the Royals the lead and the win. Hal McRae (.291, 1 HR, 10 RBI) hits a two-run home run for Kansas City to support starter Steve Busby (2-3, 5.06 ERA) who gives up two runs on eight hits in nine innings of work to get the win. Eckersley (3.26 ERA) is charged with just five hits in nine innings, allowing two runs while striking out five while Rick Manning (.300, 2 HR, 10 RBI) provides much of the Tribe offense with three hits, including a solo home run, and scoring both runs. National League News Houston Astros at Pittsburgh Pirates John Candelaria (1-2, 2.81 ERA) strikes out 11 and allows six hits in nine innings, but three of those hits go for home runs as the Astros defeat the Pirates by a 4-2 score. Bob Watson (.314, 2 HR, 13 RBI) hits a two-run home run while Cliff Johnson (.250, 3 HR, 9 RBI) and Cesar Cedeno (.205, 3 HR, 8 RBI) add solo shots as Houston leaves no men on base. J.R. Richard (2-3, 5.63 ERA) gets the win, throwing eight innings and giving up seven hits and two runs while striking out eight.
