Why would the Jets be out from the start? The only reason they're a 'media circus' is because the NFL media loves talking so much **** about the team to drive ratings even though they're nothing more than a mediocre team in transition. If you shut out the idiots, the Jets aren't too bad a team to follow.

Rudel if it helps you decide, a few years back I wrote to every MLB team but also a few NFL teams. The best replies I got back were from the Lions (signed Barry Sanders photo), Colts (signed Marshall Faulk photo) and the Jets who sent me a load of stuff including media guides, keyrings etc. I didn't write to the Giants wish I had done as the east coast teams were more friendly than the central and west coast teams, the best replies overall were from the New York teams. Actually the west coast which is pictured as friendly was a big dissapointment, the only team who really replied were the San Diego Padres, although I didn't write to any of the NFL teams on the west coast or near to the west coast.

Why not just be a fan of the NFL? Watch every game that interests you and see which teams you like. We all become fans of teams for different reasons and its your choice but i think your almost forcing yourself to like a team. Not sure if that will be good for you in the long run.

When I was growing up, I was a Giants fan as they played in Yankee Stadium. When they left NY, I decided to get a new team. I was choosing between Cowboys, Steelers and Raiders and I decided to go with the Cowboys. Tom Landry ultimately is what sold me. Eventually, Jerry Jones bought the team and I became a fan of the 2 most hated teams in America. Ah well

So in other words you are a bandwagon fan? It is my hope that Rudel does not become that.

I have decided to follow the Panthers.

I have never actually met anyone who says they are a Panthers fan. And I have always liked their uniforms and color scheme. Plus I like Cam Newton.

Uh, no. I've been a Yankees fan since 1975 and a Cowboys fan since the early 80s. When the Giants abandoned NY, I abandoned them. I'd love to know your definition of "bandwagon fan" .

Ok I was putting your fandom for the Cowboys in 1974 when they played in the NFC Championship game in back to back seasons. East when the Giants left NY. Still the Cowboys went from 1966 to 1987 without a losing record.
My definition of a bandwagon fan is someone who cheers for a team that is not in their geographical region only because they win. This is why the Yankees, Cowboys and Lakers have so many fans, many of whom have never stepped foot into any of their stadiums. My cousin who was born in Indianapolis and lived part of his life in Palo Alto is a Colts, Lakers & Yankees fan. Also a diehard Kentucky fan. Colts and Kentucky make sense, the other 2 don't. He was in his early teens when the Yankees were still great and the Lakers were winning back to back Championships with Shaq & Kobe.
I applaud Rudel who chose a team that has the possibility of being good soon but has not been good in 9 years.

Hockey season starts next Tuesday, so you can ignore the NFL now.

Why should where you live determine who you root for? So what if someone starts liking a team when they are winning. No team will win forever. I can see supporting your team once you pick them but theres no rule you have to support the same team your whole life. A person shoud pick a team cause he or she likes that team regardless of whether the team is winning or losing.

How many people with the exception of rudel, pick a team when they suck? I don't recall anyone becoming Tigers fans when they lost 100 games. I have yet to see any Sacramento Kings fans. Fans become fans of their team because they are geographically closest to that city or because that team wins. I am lucky that all my teams I choose for are basically within 20 miles of where I grew up and only one played out of state in Notre Dame. They were all good in the mid - late 80's. I was a fan of all of them before they won a title in my lifetime. It sure seems like the Cowboys, Lakers & Yankees never lose. Which are the 3 teams with the most fans. Saw plenty of Laker fans jump off the bandwagon this year.

You weren't a Yankees fan in the 80s or a Cowboys fan in the late 80s before the trade with the Vikings helped them build their early 90s teams or since Jerry Jones decided he was a good GM.

I didn't pick the Cowboys because they were a great team. I picked them because I thought Tom Landry was the epitome of class (I picked the Giants before that because I was a Yankees fan and the Giants played in Yankee Stadium). I didn't pick the Yankees because they were great. I picked them because my Dad took me to a game in 1975, which is when I fell in love with baseball in general.

Someone that only cheers for a team because they win usually drops that team when they start losing. In other words, a bandwagon fan is not a true fan. Why a person chooses a team is irrelevant. What matters is how attached to that team they become through thick and thin. The Cowboys could go 1-15 for the next 10 years and I would still love that team.

The Cowboys went 7-9 in 1986 and bottomed out at 1-15 in '89. The first winning season was '91 and then went on a 4 year tear. But since then they haven't done squat. It hasn't been fantastic being a Cowboys fan. But at least their fans know the ownership is committed to winning. At least the effort is there, unlike several other teams.

BTW, Carolina is an excellent choice. From what I can tell their organization is also committed to winning.

If you were going to choose a team why would you pick a team that has been losing and shows no signs of improving? Thats just stupid to ask someone to to pick losing team because to prove they are a true fan. Theres no way to know when fans chose their teams and if they stayed when the team was losing. If a team keeps losing and a fan feels in their heart they have lost faith in that team why should the fan have to keep rooting for a team they no longer support? That would be like forcing you to stay with a spouse you no longer love. Now if someone switched to the super bowl winner every year then i could agree with you.

I have seen a # of bandwagon fans give up on the Lakers this past season and start to root for other teams. They will come back in droves when they start winning. Same thing with the Romo led Cowboys, over the past several years you Cowboy fans have been relatively quiet. When they get back to the NFC Championship and Super Bowl, i will start hearing about some guy in Oregon who claims to have been a fan of them when they were 1-15. He won't mention the fact that over the last several years he has been also cheering for Seattle.
