Since his return I have not sparred De La Torre, or any of the other bantamweights. Acevedo instructs me to box with Marquesa Rodriguez, he watches every round. It is the first time he has paid me attention. I try even harder. ![]() As I warm down Acevedo takes me aside and tells me I look comfortable against heavier boxers. He says they have a problem at featherweight and that he thinks I can solve it. Would I like to box at featherweight? Flattered I say yes without thinking.

I am eating twice as much now, but I also am working twice as hard. Acevedo spends more time with me than maybe anyone else. I am told to jab. Always to jab. ![]() I do not enjoy training, but Acevedo tells me if I want to one day be a great Cuban boxer I must master all ranges.

CUBA vs. SWEDEN Flyweight - Martinez defeated Hölderlin Bantamweight - De La Torre defeated Berggren We were 2-0 up. It was my turn. Some of the guys told me he was, or had been the European champion. Acevedo told me to remember my training.

I do not want to, but to please Acevedo I intend to box from distance. I drop my opponent with my first punch, the left hook. ![]() I feel embarrassed and hope he gets up. He does and I stay outside. His reach seems longer than mine as his jab starts to lands more and more. I lose the round. In the corner Acevedo tells me to stick with my jab, but dictate the distance. I feint a jab and get my head on my opponent's chest. I refuse him any room and force him to trade. A short right makes him take a knee. ![]() He finds his feet and I find his head twice more with heavy blows, but he survives to finish the contest. 4-1. I win my first international contest for Cuba.

Since we defeated Sweden, the coaches are happy. Nationals are a few months away, so everyone trains hard. ![]() I asked Acevedo if I could enter at Bantamweight to box De La Torre. He said if I did, the only way I could stay in the National team is to win. I was given a day to think over my decision.

I told Acevedo that the team's need is greater than my own. I will box at featherweight. Sparring has been going well, I am confident as we near nationals.

Nationals are less than a week away. I feel stronger each day at my new weight. But I have not yet lost my desire to defeat De La Torre.
