Well, it may be easier for you to do than a real-life GM as there are certain rules OOTP does not recreate. For example, a player released between Aug. 31st and the start of the next season cannot be re-signed by that team until May 15 of that next season; a free agent signed in the off-season cannot be traded to another club until June 16th of that season; and so forth. Also, in earlier years there were waiver restrictions on interleague trades (these were done away with in 1986, probably as a consequence of the 1985 CBA).
