I actually didn't mind that period quite so much. I had hope. There were some young guys, Bonderman looked promising, I was at least deluded into thinking that there was potential.

It was better than watching Deer swing from his shoelaces.

Deer. *grimace*

It's a pity Bonderman never really managed to reach his full potential, thanks to that arm/rib issue he had.

He tried to catch on to the Mariners this year, but near the end of ST, they sent him down to AAA. I hope he makes it back up this year, he's a good guy.

Uh oh, the Tigers' bullpen nojo is already infecting Guy Smiley. A double and a walk.

He about gave me a heart attack too, loading the bases before finally getting a ground-out to the end inning. At least he only gave up the one run.

Todd Jones/Jose Valverde couldn't have done it better.

Edit. Oi. Cross-post with the Chris.

Dangnabbit, Chris. You keep beating me to the punch!

*Throws a rosin bag at you*

Edit: And from the looks of Leyland on TV, the old man is about to have a massive coronary. I'm sure he's wishing for a smoke right now.

Well, that had all the elements that we have come to expect except an HR.

Tigers 4, Twins 2. [Boxscore]

Summary: Cold Cats outlast stubborn Twins.

As Conn_Chris said, all the elements except a HR.

Pitching: In an unusually inefficient start for him, Verlander threw 91 pitches in just 5 innings, surrendering just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. The numbers, except for the innings pitched, were vintage Verlander. Either the cold effected him, or a dodgy strike zone baffled him. I admit, some of those calls looked dodgy on TV, but that's prolly just me.

Smyly, on the other hand, as noted in the above posts, managed to channel both Todd "Gas Can" Jones and Jose Valderde at their worse. He went 1.1 innings, giving up 3 hits, 3 walks, and 2 runs, loading the bases twice. A shot of Skipper in the dugout showed him madly pacing, and I imagine he wished for a smoke at that moment - or a stiff shot of something strong.

Alburquerque came in to save the day, getting two Twinkies to strike out and end the threat. Bless you, Fireman Al.

Benoit and Coke came on after that, with Coke getting the save in a flawless performance.

Offense: Well, the Tigers opened up with a blast, scoring two runs in the first inning. It started out with Jackson getting a single, advancing to third on a single by Hunter. Cabrera hit into a fielder's choice that scored AJ, and Fielder followed that up with a double to score Miggy. Boom, the Tigers were up on top 2-0 before Verlander even took the mound.

They tacked on another run in the 2nd when Peralta singled, stole 2nd, and then came home on an Infante single.

After that, they had very little success until Fielder scored from third on a WP in the 8th by the Twin's Roenicke.

It was a nice tight game.

Next game: Wednesday, April 3rd, Detroit @ Minnesota, 4:10pm Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket.

A little too early to say for sure, but we'll know more in a few weeks whether the current guys will get the job done. I don't think Rondon will be the answer if it turns out they need help - his control issues are a problem. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Twins 3, Tigers 2. [Boxscore]

Summary: Tigers fall as bullpen catches fire - the wrong way.

Pitching: Sanchez thew a terrific game, and it's a pity he couldn't go more than 5 innings thanks to his pitch count (95). He only allowed 5 baserunners (2 hits, 3 BB), while putting the collar on 5 Twinkies.

And then the Cats ran into trouble. Downs (1.1 IP, 1 BB, 1 run, 3K's), Villarreal (2/3 inning, 1H, 2K), Benoit (1IP, 2 walks, 1 run allowed), and Coke (1/3 inning, 2 hits, 1 run, Blown Save/Loss) were collectively ineffective.

Coupled with Monday's game, one has to be wondering in the back of his mind, despite the extreme earliness of the season, whether this bunch is gonna be able to do the job. Give it a few weeks and we'll know for sure. Benoit/Coke had me nervously chewing on a pen cap, wondering just who the hell is channeling Todd Jones to this bunch!

Offensively... well, the cold probably froze their bats a little. The bright side is Cabby had his first 2 hits of the season, driving in both of the Tigers runs.

All in all, frustrating game to watch. These guys are better than this.

Next game: Thursday, Tigers @ Twins, 1:10 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket.

Has Matt Anderson's injury healed yet? Maybe they can give him a jingle.

I had to go hunting for a source, but, yes, correct. He's reporting to Lakeland (A).
