Right, but will the AHL in the game be able to have the NHL farm system turned off, or will players just be treated like loans, or will there be some other solution? That's what I'm wondering.

Well, in OOTP, you can decide what league(s) and what team(s) serve as the minor pro affiliates of your top league, if you want any. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible in FHM.

That is something else to consider. Promotion/relegation is used in conjunction with an open league model, which means there are no territorial restrictions. A city can be home to as many clubs as that city can support. This is in contrast to the North American closed league model, in which league membership is purposefully restricted and each member club has an exclusive territory within which no other club is permitted to operate (a territorial monopoly, in other words).
