The guy was duped and too embarrassed to make it public, it appears. Even Notre Dame is backing him on this. Just some internet junkies trying to make a name for themselves by trashing a great player. |

I have actually met you, but that still doesn't change how sad I would be. Shoot, I was sad just hearing about the deaths in your family that you had to deal with over the last couple years.

I thought about contacting you when my wife, daughter and I visited Disney World in the beginning of this year, but I wasn't sure if you'd be up for dinner. Besides, the fact I am not a Red Lobster fan, our schedule was pretty packed. All of the theme parks and visiting with my cousin from Miami...not enough time for much else. My sister from England even hung out for four days with us down there. We do plan on going back. When we do, let's get together...as long as it isn't Red Lobster.

Back on topic...
The media failed in this story as well. Why didn't they investigate the girlfriend's death? Just proves how lame the media is too. |

So, guessing "Te'o'd" (or Te'-oing) will now be a word.

Why would they? Unless they had a reason to think it was supicious. Why don't they investigate his grandmother's death? Does he even really have a grandmother?

Not a single media outlet investigated the passing of this girl? That's plain negligence. The story sounded much better apparently, so they ran with it. Sometimes, fiction sells better than truth. His Grandma? I think the body was proof enough. |

Speaking for myself, this story is particularly compelling because there exists contradiction after contradiction about how he met this woman. Some people are stating (even a professional football player from Arizona) that they physically met her. What? This literally doesn't make any sense. Secondly, Notre Dame has a history of shady dealings in the past. More so recently when it comes to Lizzy Seeburg and Declan Sullivan. Notre Dame failing to live up to its name - Chicago Tribune Combined with Lance Armstrong lying for years, the whole Penn. State scandal, steroid era, Ohio St & Jim Tressel, etc...I lean towards that he was in on it and now the ND spin machine is in full effect. Swarbrick was stumbling all over his words in the press conference. Te'o cancelled an interview he was scheduled to have today with an ESPN reporter. I understand that the kid is embarrassed about this now but cancelling that interview leads me to believe, among other people, that he is just trying to craft his story. Now that the cat is out of the bag, wouldn't it be in his best interest to just be as candid about this as possible? I hope this is just an unfortunate situation in which he was tricked, but I dunno... Quote:

We're not talking exactly serious investivative journalism here, maybe google a name and look into the results. That's usually about the limit for the goofs at Deadspin but apparently not important enough anymore to Serious Sports Journalist guy.

2) Don't you think Te'o (and all other collegiate atheletes) have a right to privacy since they aren't paid for their services? I fail to see how it's the media's job to investigate innocuous family matters involving students. 3) How is it negligence? Who was hurt (other than Te'o) by the media not doing "their" job? 4) If you want to call out the media on not doing their due diligence regarding Notre Dame affairs, I suggest you look elsewhere. Who was hurt? How about the people that trust the media to get their stories right before reporting them? We are all hurt by media negligence at one time or another. Using other stories regarding ND is merely a straw-man. Stick to this discussion. We aren't talking about the item you linked. |

![]() You say that Te's grandmother's body is proof....did the media confirm that? Did the media confirm Troy Smith's brother existed and is dead? How about Marcell Darius's brother, did the media confirm those as well? What about Bret Favre, is his father dead? My link is not a strawman. It's a redirection to a legitimate issue with the media. Why must you minimize it by declaring this story as their responsibility when they should be focusing on more important issues. One does not investigate something unless they are led to believe there is a reason to investigate it. In this instance nobody was given a reason to think there was anything more to the story until now. Researching someone's existence takes a little more than a google search as was suggested. |

2) Marcell Dareus's brother's death was confirmed. His body was found and the police verified that Simeon Gilmore, 19...was Dareus' brother. Marcell Dareus' younger brother reportedly killed in shooting - NFL - Sporting News Pelham homicide victim was brother of former Alabama lineman, Buffalo Bill Marcell Dareus | al.com 3) Troy Smith's brother? Here's a link. The media did their job and verified the younger brother was killed in an accident. How you might ask? The body was a dead giveaway. Smith suits up after brother's death, scores 2 TDs - NFL - Yahoo! Sports Like LL said, it's easy to google this stuff. Any more questions about the media verifying other deaths? Ususally when there is a body, it's quite easy to verify. Quote:
Redirection or strawman...doesn't matter. I'm going to stick to this discussion. If you really need to talk about your other issue, you can start a new thread. |

I guess I'm still trying to figure out why this is such an important topic that all sports media has to drop everything and talk about it 100%. Every sports radio show I listened to today pretty much had this format:
Teo, Teo, Teo, oh crap I guess we'll talk to this guest we already had booked, Teo, Teo, another prebooked guest lets ask him about Teo, Teo, Teo, Teo, Teo. Is this the most important topic ever? Sure, it's absurd. Sure, I want to know if he's faking or not, but we don't know that yet. Sure, I want to shine the light on nutballs forging stuff online and wantonly disgracing people in public. But I'm not sure how this fills a 3 or 4 hour radio program. Let's move on and talk some sports too. I dunno, maybe I just listened to the radio too much today

Whether Te'o was in the hoax (appears unlikely) or not - and embellishing the details of a relationship that he thought was real does not constitute in on the hoax - as long as he can play Sunday-level football, he'll recover. After all, Ray Lewis sure did. And that involved not just an actual death, but a murder.

![]() So did mine, so did my Mom, so did my brother...all within the last 26 months. I was able to confirm their deaths.I'm not a journalist, but I'll try to confirm your dad's death. Post your father's full name, where he was born, where he died and the manner in which he died. It'll give me a place to start. |
