Justin Smoak to the All-Star game? Okay -- now you're veering a long ways away from reality

OK so upon further review of that trade i would like to say you sir are correct!! That would have been a horrible trade. (Side note i didn't actually see who was in the trade initially, I had just seen that Upton turned it down). Good job Upton.

I have been as big of a Jason Vargas fan as anybody and had advocated locking him up for a few years but with the fences coming and his penchant for giving up HR's I was just not confident that he would maintain, or raise, his trade value. We needed offense and we took advantage of what Vargas has done. He very well could repeat but there is as big of a chance that he tanks. Especially after looking at the home/road splits.

2013 offseason report

Below is a pic of all the M's team stats for 2012.

To start the offseason headed toward 2013, the M's released pitching coach Chris Chambliss and voided the final contract year for C Miguel Olivo. Also P Jason Vargas was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for 1B Kendrys Morales. This leaves the M's looking for a left handed starting pitcher for next year.

C Miguel Olivo, P Kevin Millwood, P George Sherrill, P Shawn Kelley, IF Chone Figgins will be released to free agency.

The M's signed Robin Ventura as the new hitting coach.

C John Jaso traded to Washington Nationals for OF Mike Morse.

IF Alex Liddi traded to NY Mets for OF Jason Bay.

OF Raul Ibanez was not released by the Yankees, therefore I am going to pursue a good catcher and good outfielder to supplement the team. Lefty P Danny Hultzen may be a starter for the M's next year, but since he had an ERA north of 5.00 at AAA Tacoma, I will also pursue a free agent lefty starter.

Traded OF Trayvon Robinson & a minor league OF to Cleveland Indians for C Lou Marson and cash. Last year for the Indians Marson hit .310/.396/.379 in 87 at bats.

Signed free agent C Miguel Montero, formerly of the Arizona Diamondbacks to a $42 million 3 year contract. Last year Montero hit .253/.328/.392 with 13 HR's and 61 RBI's over 549 at bats. His past performances show that can hit as high as .290 but will most likely hit about .270 next year.

Traded P Hector Noesi & OF Darren Ford to Detroit Tigers for lefty P Drew Smyly. 2012 was Smyly's rookie season in which he went 12-8 with a 5.04 ERA in starting 29 games.

It's January 1, 2013 in my experiment. The Houston Astros are officially part of the AL West Division and the fences have been moved in at Safeco Field. It's time to start the comparison. Next up is Spring Training with a very different looking Seattle Mariners. Stay tuned...

I will keep it going. But it might be a few days before I get back to it. Thanks for reading.

I'm really interested to see what happens. The HR park factors went from 1.0 to 1.019 for lefties and 0.8 to 0.84 for righties. It's going to be interesting.

The chance of him having a good year I think is pretty good. Since he has one of the best defenses in baseball behind him and he's playing AGAINST the M's. He'll probably be an All-Star, just because that's how the M's luck usually goes.

2013 Preseason & Spring Training

I guess I had some spare time tonight after all!

Jan. 12, 2013 - Signed free agent P Joel Peralta to a 2 year, $12.5 million deal. Peralta spent the last two years with Tampa Bay Rays. Last year he was 4-2 with 45 saves and a 3.13 ERA through 68 games/72 IP.

Mar. 6, 2013 - Spring Training 2013 is here! Listed below is the Mariners 40-man Roster:
P Blake Beavan
P Michael Fiers
P Felix Hernandez
P Danny Hultzen (Spent 2012 with AAA Tacoma)
P Hisashi Iwakuma
P James Paxton (spent 2012 with AA Jackson)
P Erasmo Ramirez
P Drew Smyly (spent 2012 with Detroit)
P Allen Webster (spent 2012 with AAA Albuquerque and AAA Tacoma)
P Roenis Ellias (spent 2012 with AA Jackson)
P Charlie Furbush
P Chance Ruffin
P Tom Wilhelmson
P Joel Peralta (spent 2012 with Tampa Bay)
C Miguel Montero
C Lou Marson
C Adam Moore (Surprisingly he hit .326/.429/.457/.885 at AAA Tacoma in 29 games and .279/.326/.419/.745 at Seattle in 12 games in 2012)
1B Justin Smoak (Again a surprising .276/.358/.481/.840 with 28 HR & 99 RBI in 155 games in 2012)
1B Kendrys Morales (Spent 2012 with LA Angels and Toronto)
1B Anthony Phillips (Spent 2012 with AA Jackson)
2B Dustin Ackley
2B Carlos Triunfel
2B Kyle Seager
3B Eric Campbell (spent 2012 with AAA Tacoma and Seattle)
3B Francisco Martinez (spent 2012 with AA Jackson)
SS Brenden Ryan
SS Nick Franklin (spent 2012 with AAA Tacoma)
OF Denny Almonte (spent 2012 with AA Jackson)
OF Mike Carp
OF Jason Bay (spent 2012 with NY Mets)
OF Tony Campana
OF Vincent Catricala (spent 2012 with AAA Tacoma)
OF Chih-Hsien Chiang (spent 2012 with AA Jackson & AAA Tacoma)

OF Ruben Sierra Jr. (acquired thru free agency during 2012. Spent time with A Clinton in 2012)
OF Carlos Peguero (in 2012 batted .196/.252/.371 in Seattle over 46 games, then .317/.362/.662 in AAA Tacoma over 49 games)
OF Johermyn Chavez (spent 2012 with AA Jackson)
OF Mike Morse (spent 2012 with Washington)
DH Jesus Montero

Mar. 20, 2013 - Sadly, the M's owner Hiroshi Yamauchi passed away today. His son, Jesus Yamauchi (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA really OOTP?!) will be taking over. He's considered a tolerant economizer. The real bummer of this situation is where Junior immediately pulls $25 million out of the team's budget. The trade deadline will be interesting this year.

April 1, 2013 - After an abysmal spring training, where the M's could only manage a 7-15 record after losing 2.6 WAR on the offseason, it's finally Cut Day.

Being sent to the Minors:
P Erasmo Ramirez
P Michael Fiers
P James Paxton
1B Anthony Phillips
2B Carlos Triunfel
3B Eric Campbell
3B Francisco Martinez
OF Ruben Sierra Jr.
OF Carlos Peguero
OF Johermyn Chavez
OF Denny Almonte
OF Tony Campana
OF Vincent Catricala
OF Chih-Hsien Chiang

Designated for Assignment:
C Adam Moore (Cleared Waivers and outrighted to AAA Tacoma)

2013 Opening Day

Here's the Opening Day roster for the Seattle Mariners for 2013:

P Blake Beavan
P Felix Hernandez
P Danny Hultzen
P Hisashi Iwakuma
P Drew Smyly
P Roenis Ellias
P Charlie Furbush
P Chance Ruffin
P Allen Webster
P Tom Wilhelmson
P Joel Peralta
C Miguel Montero
C Lou Marson
1B Justin Smoak
1B Kendrys Morales
2B Dustin Ackley
3B Kyle Seager
SS Brendan Ryan
SS Nick Franklin
OF Mike Carp
OF Jason Bay
OF Franklin Gutierrez
OF Michael Saunders
OF Mike Morse
DH Jesus Montero

After spectacular individual performances during spring training, the catchers and first basement and shortstops will be platooned and for now Bay and Saunders are the bench bats. The M's are predicted to finish with 84 wins in 2nd place behind the LA Angels. The new owner just wants our M's to finish at .500 on the season.

Here goes 2013!

Good luck Lego. I see the makings of a solid team. What's the minor leagues look like for ya? Any young stars in the future for ya?

I think Fiers, Paxton, Walker, and Campbell all have a good shot at being star players. I also have Mike Zunino and I'm interested to see what might happen with Ruben Sierra Jr.

Rookie SS Nick Franklin is hitting .268 to SS Brendan Ryan's .107

May 7, 2013 - RF Mike Morse placed on DL. OF Vincent Catricala promoted from AAA Tacoma to Seattle.
May 29, 2013 - RF Mike Morse returns from DL and OF Vincent Catricala sent back to AAA Tacoma.

At the end of May, 2013 the M's fell off to 18-32, which puts them at 9-1/2 GB in 5th place. That's right you read correctly. The M's only managed 7 wins in May AND they're worse than the Astros. UGH!!!

June 1, 2013 - Recalled P Erasmo Ramirez from AAA Tacoma and Sent P Chance Ruffin down to AAA Tacoma.

June 10, 2013 - Something badly needed to be done as the M's continued their epically bad slide. The pitching went from one of the best in the league to worst in the league, to match the batting I guess. I traded P Drew Smyly to Tampa Bay Rays for P Josh Lueke. I also demoted P Roenis Ellias to AAA Tacoma and brought up P Tyler Burgoon. And since I'm apparently running out of money, thanks to ownership changes, I will be shopping around SS Brendan Ryan as he is currently hitting .145 and is in the last year of his contract. I may also make a trade to make financial room for Mike Morse and even out the budget.

June 17, 2013 - Traded OF Franklin Gutierrez and SS Brendan Ryan to Chicago White Sox for OF Melky Cabrera. Traded two players hitting under .220 for a player hitting .335. Good Deal? Also recalled 3B Eric Campbell from AAA Tacoma.

I'm also placing Jason Bay on DFA. He's only had one appearance this year, and it was as a pinch runner. He has not had a single AB this year and bringing Cabrera onboard only decreases his chances at AB's. His absence opens up a spot for OF Tony Campana to be recalled from AAA Tacoma where he's been hitting .310 over 252 AB's.

June 27, 2013 - Jason Bay traded to Texas Rangers for MR Jeff Karstens & OF Tyler Massey. Also promoted P Michael Fiers from AAA Tacoma. P Erasmo Ramirez & P Allen Webster demoted to AAA Tacoma.

At the end of June, 2013 the M's are 29-47 and in 5th Place, but only 10 games back from 1st place. Still a better month than May, at 11-15. Kendrys Morales has done nothing, batting .186/.225/.237 with 1 HR and 10 RBI. I'm thinking about trading him to open up more playing time for Mike Carp. It's looking like Morse and Miguel Montero are holding their own, but all other offseason free agents signed have provided bupkiss in helping the team.

July 12, 2013 - The injury bug strikes!! P Hisashi Iwakuma is out for 2 weeks and DH Jesus Montero is out for 3 weeks. P Allen Webster recalled from AAA Tacoma for the interrim.

July 17, 2013 - All-Star Game! And, not a single Mariner was elected to the All-Star Game. the AL wins it 10-9.

July 29, 2013 - Traded 1B Kendrys Morales to San Francisco Giants for C Jackson Williams.

July 31, 2013 - Iwakuma and J. Montero are back from the DL.

At the end of July, 2013 the M's are 39-62, 15 GB out of 1st place, still hanging out in the basement (5th Place).
