Baltimore Gazette March 11th, 2013 Baltimore Blackwings owner Bob Anderson passes away! Son Robert to take over the team! Long-time Baltimore Blackwings owner Bob Anderson succumbed to a long-time illness today at the ripe old age of 78. The business tycoon was one of the initial 30 founders of the PLB and has owned the Blackwings franchise since the inception of the league in 1995. Anderson’s long tenure in Baltimore has been a topic for contention by local baseball fans. On one hand, many are grateful that Anderson managed to bring a team to Baltimore after the MLB lockout wiped out the Orioles from the baseball-hungry Baltimore market. On the other hand, the mixed results of the Blackwings franchise and the trigger-happy management style of Anderson has to be considered as well. Despite a few playoff appearances, the Blackwings have been one of the least successful teams and has never been confused for being one of the better teams in the league in any of their 18 seasons in the PLB, never topping 91 wins in a season. Many have cited Anderson’s impatient nature as one of the causes for the team’s failures as Anderson became notorious for being meddlesome in personnel decisions of the team while not providing a budget sufficient to meeting his goals. Furthermore, he is extremely quick to change coaches and general managers, never giving his staff the time necessary to rebuild a team to succeed. There have been signs of improvement lately as Anderson had left all decisions to GM Cal Ripken, Jr. without second guessing him. Unfortunately, we will never get to find out how his attitude towards Ripken would develop as his death means son Robert Anderson will inherit the team and serve as the new owner. The younger Anderson is the 51-year-old heir to the Anderson Empire and has lived a relatively sheltered life thus far. He doesn’t have his father’s famous temper and is expected to be an understanding owner who will let Ripken make the decisions he needs to. However, he isn’t expected to be any less fiscally controlling than his late father and the Blackwings will probably continue to operate under a small budget. Still, Robert is expected to give Ripken a very long leash on rebuilding the downtrodden franchise. This story is entirely OOTP generated so I was just as shocked as anybody! I was hoping for a more fiscally lenient owner but I suppose a GM can’t pick and choose his owner after all. |

The Ripken Diaries March 31st, 2013 Spring Training recap and Opening Day rosters! Spring Training We started spring training on a dismal 3-7 run with our offense totally non-existent in most of the games. I was beginning to get worried about the state of my lineup but the team rebounded strongly to finish with a winning record at 12-10. A number of hitters heated up and contributed significantly to the turn-around while the starting rotation and bullpen remained excellent. I believe that this will continue to be the theme of our season. The pitching should be solid all-year round, but we would be vulnerable to inconsistent play on the offensive side of the ball. Players who were excellent in spring training include 3B Bill Woods (1.113 OPS), 1B Michizane Motsuzuki (1.067 OPS), 2B Rich Wilson (.969 OPS), 3B Edgar Thomas (.902 OPS), SP Ricardo Martinez (0.56 ERA), SP Mark Powlett (1.69 ERA), SP Guy Peterson (2.25 ERA) and CL Julio Gonzalez (1.86 ERA). As for the battles heading into spring training, Edgar Thomas edged out Salvatore Martinez (.588 OPS) and will start at shortstop. Thomas is a worse defender than Martinez, but not significantly so and looks like he can be a much more valuable contributor on offense. Jason MacKinney edged out the competitors in left field, but did not significantly outperform the field and the righty Dennis Simpson will join him in a platoon arrangement. In the bullpen, Donald Clemons and William Hendricks pitched abysmally but I will keep them on the active roster for now as it was a relatively small sample size. Besides the younger relievers I invited the spring training didn’t get to pinch enough innings to make a strong case for themselves either. Competition for the final roster spot was not as fierce as I thought after a bevy of mediocre players underperformed in spring. My final cut included Shinzo Ojima, Charlie Bird, Luis Medellin (who had a strong spring and made a case for being the backup 1B, but was matched by Sebastien Lemmonier), Matt Montgomery, Dan Hurst, Jon O’Neal, Philip House, Manual Lopez, George Smith, Ivan Guillen and Robert Tidwell. Opening Day Rotation #1 (R) Mark Powlett #2 (R) Guy Peterson #3 (R) Ricardo Martinez #4 (R) Bruce Davis #5 (R) Jacob Wiggins We have one of the best 1-2-3 starting pitchers in the league and Bruce Davis could easily make the leap this year to make it a formidable top 4.Coach Ryan Yates wanted to upgrade Guy Peterson to be the ace of the rotation and while he certainly has produced the numbers expected of an ace, I convinced Yates to keep Powlett there. Powlett has served the team for almost 10 years and I didn’t think it’s fair to strip him of his ace designation while he is still pitching excellently. Yates is also very high on Bruce Davis and wanted him as the #3 but once again I convinced him otherwise as I don’t want to put too much pressure on the rookie. I’m glad to see that everyone in the organization is so high on Davis though. Wiggins may not be ready to be a major league starter yet and is definitely the weak link of the rotation. I’m just hoping that he can hold his own on the mound every 5th day and not become a human piñata. If that happens, we should have one of the better rotations in the league. Opening Day Bullpen CL (R) Julio Gonzalez SU (L) Toshinobu Sato SU (R) Seishiro Yama****a MR (R) Danny MacDougall MR (R) Brendan Larson MR (R) William Hendricks MR (R) Donald Clemons The first thing that comes to mind must be how right-hander heavy this bullpen is. I agree that it is a problem, especially with a fully right-handed rotation. It may not affect us too much at home as the ballpark is murder on left-handers, but I need more than 1 left-hander on the road when I need to get a tough lefty out. There’s a bunch of veteran free agent relievers on the market who shouldn’t cost much so I will be taking a look at them. Julio Gonzalez gets the closer nod due to his experience. Although Sato performed very well as the closer last season, he is the only southpaw in my bullpen at the moment and I don’t want to limit him to the 9th inning. His outstanding stamina would also be best suited in a middle relief or set-up role. Hendricks and Clemon stunk up the joint in spring training, but I hope they can turn things around when the real games get underway. We don’t exactly have a dominating bullpen, but I expect it to be around league-average. I inherited a really abysmal lineup last November and while I believe that I’ve made a few upgrades, most of those moves can only be considered akin to putting a plaster over a bleeding wound and are just temporary solution to keep us competitive. While not elite by any means, Motsuzuki, Woods and Peterson are decent run-producers in the middle of the lineup. The problem lies at the top and bottom of the lineup. Wilson and Thomas are mediocre offensive players and won’t be a threat to steal 30 bases anytime soon. Maese is my only speed threat and Ryan Yates wanted him at the top of the lineup. However I pointed to his .300 OBP and told Yates that it won’t cut it as a lead-off hitter. My 6-7-8 won’t scare any pitcher and I just hope they hold their own and not embarrass themselves out there. Barring a miraculous breakout, I’m expecting that we are going to be well below-average on offense. No one on our roster seems likely to improve by leap and bounds, but precocious prospect Jon O’Neal in AAA may provide a spark if he performs well enough to earn a mid-season call up. Defensively, we have some issues as well. Catcher Juan Durango is probably a below average fielder at his position and shortstop Edgar Thomas is a converted third baseman without much experience there. Having both of them starting gives us poor fielders at two of the most important defensive positions. Woods and Motsuzuki at the corner infield spots are also less than ideal fielders, but at least they are playing a less premium position. Fortunately, my outfield should be an elite defensive unit with the addition of the rangy Maese. In summary, infield defense would be a problem but outfield defense would be a strength. |

Baltimore Gazette April 1st, 2013 Opening Day 2013 arrives! Fans eager to see if Cal Ripken, Jr. can turn Blackwings around. With the Blackwings set to open their season away at interleague foes Charlotte Hornets, Baltimore fans back home are cautiously optimistic about the fresh era new GM Cal Ripken, Jr. has ushered in for the team. While Ripken has not made any flashy moves during the winter, the team finally seems to have a clear sense of direction under his new regiment and for the first time in half a decade there is some hope in Baltimore. Ripken has stressed continuously that with a limited budget, a transformation of the team would take time. Still, there is nothing like a hot start to the season to get the fans excited about the new era. At the very least, fans are hoping that the team can improve on their poor 76-86 record last season. On the other hand, a poor April may just knock all the wind out of the team’s sail as fans would easily treat the new era as more of the same and become apathetic. It would be hard to win them back after that. For the sake of the sanity of everybody in Baltimore, let’s hope that the promise shown by the new regiment is more than just a mirage. |

The Ripken Diaries April 1st, 2013 Opening Day 2013 thoughts and reports Front Office Owner Robert Anderson sent me an email informing me that “I can do whatever I like, I don’t expect anything”. Well I’m glad that he isn’t like his father Bob is rumored to be, demanding a playoff appearance every year even though the budget he provides is just pitiful. While it’s good to know that I won’t wake up any day and find myself fired, I would rather Robert devote more resources to the team while also demanding better results. A fair trade off in my opinion, but Robert seems more concerned about the bottom line. Speaking of that, I still have $5,744,829 to spend this season even after tendering a $1,000,000 offer to a veteran southpaw reliever. That should keep Robert happy while also giving me some flexibility to make moves during the season. Unlike Robert, I expect the team to be competitive. Although our 76-86 record last season doesn’t look very bad, the team’s poor run differential was one of a 70-win team so the record was very flattering for their performance. My goal for us this season would be to finish with a winning record which is no mean feat as it is an effective 11-game improvement over last season’s expected record. Player Development The new BNN prospect rankings came out and I’m glad to see that we are rated by far and away the best minor league system in the PLB (155 points to 114 for our nearest competitor). This would be my trump card as I attempt to rebuild the Blackwings as talented youngsters can be cheap and effective, allowing me to spend elsewhere to upgrade the roster. We have both quality and depth in our system, with 2 prospects ranked in the top 10, 6 in the top 100 and 12 in the top 200. These 12 players are:
  Wow! Not even in my most optimistic dreams did I predict a 90-win season. BNN actually picks us to finish a splendid 91-71 and qualify for the postseason as a wild card! While our offense is unsurprisingly picked to struggle, BNN expects our pitching to be good enough to overcome that. In fact, the 1310 strikeouts they predicted for our staff is 150 more than any other team in the National League! I have great faith in my staff but even I think that may be a bit of a stretch, especially given that we have an average bullpen and defense. I would love to win 91 games in my first season, but I believe that is unrealistic given how poor we were last season (as I keep emphasizing, 70-92 Pyt. Record). I shall stick to my own personal goal of a winning season instead of putting unnecessary pressure on my team with unrealistic expectations. |

Powlett certainly made me look foolish with his ghastly outing (4.0 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HR). A non-existent offense didn’t help against complete game winner Joe Beton. 02/04/13 - BAL 5, CHA 3 (10): Guy Peterson pitched just well enough to keep us in the game (7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 2 HR) but we needed a 2-out RBI-single in the 9th inning from Carlos Maese to keep us in the game. Michizane Motsuzuki and Howard Peterson each drove in a run in the 10th inning to give us the victory. Julio Gonzalez pitched a scoreless 9th and 10th inning to earn himself a W. Rich Wilson was injured running the bases and will be replaced in the lineup by Salvatore Martinez. 03/04/13 – CHA 2, BAL 0: The home-and-home series moves to Baltimore but Ricardo Martinez’s strong outing (7.1 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 0 BB 7 K) was wasted as we couldn’t get anything going against Hornets starter Juan Garcia, managing just 7 harmless singles. The offense has got to step up. 04/04/13 – CHA 2, BAL 3 (10): Bruce Davis pitched superbly (8.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR) after surrendering a 2-run homer in the first inning. Carlos Maese was the late-game hero once again, singling home Peterson with 2 outs in the 10th for our 2nd extra inning win of the season. Given our struggles so far, we could easily have been winless 4 games into the season so we can consider ourselves lucky so far. Also, Wilson’s diagnosis is out. Fortunately, he will only miss 4 days so he will be back early next week. 05/04/13 – LA 2, BAL 3: 5th starter Jacob Wiggins doesn’t have high expectations but got the job done today (7.2 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K). Carlos Maese was the hero once again, launching a 3-run homer in the 4th that proved to be enough for the win. Julio Gonzalez got his first save of the young season. 06/04/13 – LA 5, BAL 9: Howard Peterson went absolutely bonkers in this game (3-5, 6 RBI, 2 R, 2 HR) to snap out of an early-season funk. Powlett was again unimpressive (8.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) but got a comfortable win anyway. 07/04/13 – LA 1, BAL 3: Bill Woods provided the offense this time, driving in all 3 runs off 2 homers. That was more than enough for Guy Peterson (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) to earn himself a win. Hot – Bill Woods: 9-27, .333/.419/.630, 2 HR, 6 RBI; Carlos Maese: 9-23, .391/.440/.522, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 SB Not – Jason McKinney: 2-15, .133/.133/.133; Juan Durango: 2-22, .091/.167/.091, 1 RBI, 1 SB Forecast: 3 vs. BOS (3-4), 4 vs. TOR (1-6) Reflections

Toshinobu Sato conceded a run in the 9th and took the loss. I finalized a 1-year, $1,000,000 contract with southpaw MR Lorenzo “Little Bull” Garcia (37, 4.5/4.5) who was the most intriguing lefty reliever left on the market. Garcia had a poor 2012 (83.0 IP, 4.55 ERA), but a .372 BABIP was mostly to blame. With this signing, MR William Hendricks will be temporarily demoted to AAA to make room after a poor start to the season so far. 10/04/13 – BOS 4, BAL 5: Backup left fielder Felipe Saenz was making his first start of the season and promptly hit a 1st inning grand slam. Jacob Wiggins was solid (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) but Sato blew the save by giving up a homer in the 8th. Fortunately, Durango’s RBI-double in the bottom of the 8th bailed us out. Gonzalez pitched another scoreless 9th for the save. 11/04/13 – TOR 1, BAL 2: Powlett returned to form with a terrific outing (7.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 HR). We only managed 2 runs off a solo homer each by Rich Wilson and Bill Woods but that proved to be enough the way Powlett pitched. 12/04/13 – TOR 3, BAL 7: Woods, Peterson and MacKinney drove in 2 runs apiece after Thomas and Motsuzuki set the table for the offense. Peterson (5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) got the support he needed on this day. 13/04/13 – TOR 3, BAL 0: We got just 3 men on-base all game and wasted another strong effort by Ricardo Martinez (5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) who now has a 0-2 record despite a 2.41 ERA. Dennis Simpson was injured in the game and I’m still awaiting his diagnosis. New signing Lorenzo Garcia made his debut and pitched 1.1 perfect innings, striking out 2 batters. 14/04/13 – TOR 0, BAL 3: Bruce Davis (8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) took a no-hitter into the 8th before finally surrendering a single. He is definitely the early leading Newcomer of the Year candidate right now. The Ripken Diaries April 22nd, 2013 2013 Season Week #3 Report Team Statistics Team Record: 14-6, .700, - GB, 1st (2.5 game lead over Philadelphia) Runs Scored: 78 (tied 7th in NL) Runs Against: 66 (tied 3rd in NL) Defensive Eff.: .689 (14th in NL) Power Ranking: 2nd, 131 points Owner Mood: Delighted; Fan Interest: 52 (=); Attendance per game: 35,130 Week Record: 4-2 15/04/13 – BAL 5, NAS 6: Our offense dominated early, knocking out Musicians starter Roberto Gonzalez before he could escape the first inning. Saenz hit another home run in the first inning, a 3-run blast this time. However Manager Yates probably left Jacob Wiggins (7.1 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) in too long this time as he gave up 2 runs in the 8th for the final margin. 16/04/13 - BAL 5, NAS 3: Mark Powlett dominated for a second straight outing (8.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K) while Motsuzuki broke out of a funk with 2 solo homers. Clemons allowed 2 runs in relief without recording an out but Gonzalez came in to stop the bleeding and earn himself another save. 17/04/13 – BAL 7, NAS 5: Peterson wasn’t his usual self today (5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) but our offense did enough to bail him out with some timely hitting. Dennis Simpson’s diagnosis came out and it turns out that he will miss 4 weeks with shoulder soreness. This gives top prospect Jon O’Neal a chance to prove himself in the majors after tearing up AAA so far this season. O’Neal will hit 6th in the lineup against both righties and lefties. 18/04/13 – OFF: Our first off-day of the season after over 2 weeks of consecutive games. We needed the break. 19/04/13 – DET 5, BAL 6: Wilson got 4 hits in this one and starter Martinez helped himself with 2 hits and 2 RBIs in this one. He got his first win of the season despite not pitching very well (6.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). Sato allowed 3 hits and a run without getting an out in the 8th but Larson managed to escape the inning without giving up a run to preserve our lead. 20/04/13 – DET 5, BAL 2: Davis threw 130 pitches and almost pitched a complete game even though he wasn’t particularly effective (8.2 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 HR). We managed 10 hits in the game but they didn’t translate into many runs. 21/04/13 – DET 2, BAL 4: Wiggins was solid even though he didn’t strike out many batters (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). We didn’t get many hits but managed enough offense to win on this day. Hot – Rich Wilson: 10-20, .500/.524/.600, 5 RBI; Michizane Motsuzuki: 5-22, .227/.250/.818, 4 HR, 6 RBI Not – Edgar Thomas: 4-24, .167/.200/.250 Forecast: 3 @ TOR (7-13), 3 @ PHI (11-8) Reflections
20/04/13 – SP Jack Wilkerson gave Columbus Flyers a rare feat to cheer about when he shutout the Vancouver Bears in a 4-0 win, striking out 4, walking 3 and allowing 3 hits. 20/04/13 – Philadelphia Quakers SP Yo****ake Watanabe also threw a shutout on this day, pitching his team to a 3-0 win while allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk to 3 strikeouts. The Ripken Diaries April 29th, 2013 2013 Season Week #4 Report Team Statistics Team Record: 17-9, .654, - GB, 1st (1.5 game lead over Philadelphia) Runs Scored: 113 (tied 8th in NL) Runs Against: 96 (3rd in NL) Defensive Eff.: .681 (13th in NL) Power Ranking: 3rd, 121 points Owner Mood: Ecstatic; Fan Interest: 55 (+3); Attendance per game: 35,130 Week Record: 3-3 22/04/13 – OFF 23/04/13 – BAL 10, TOR 2: Peterson homered twice, backing up yet another strong start by Mark Powlett (6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K, 1 HR) who even added a homer of his own! Seishiro Yama****a suffered shoulder subluxation during the game and will miss a week of action. He won’t go on the DL. 24/04/13 - BAL 3, TOR 7: Peterson struggled in this one (6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) and we only mustered 5 hits and 3 runs on offense. Danny McDougall briefly made it interesting by conceding 3 runs late but Julio Gonzalez came in to stop the comeback and earn himself yet another save. 26/04/13 – BAL 1, PHI 2: Bruce Davis was solid (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) but the offense sputtered other than Jon O’Neal (3-4 with a double). Tough loss to the team behind us in the standings. 27/04/13 – BAL 8, PHI 9: Jacob Wiggins didn’t pitch very well (7.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR) but helped himself with a 3-run homer! Maese and Wilson also homered on a productive day for the offense but Gonzalez, who had not given up a run up to this point in the season, blew the save after given up a walk-off 2-out triple to Quakers superstar Jesus Montoya. 28/04/13 – BAL 6, PHI 5: The offense was clicking again with 3-hit games from Peterson and a surging Durango. Mark Powlett was just decent (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR) but Gonzalez had a second consecutive shaky outing. He allowed 4 singles in the 9th and was lucky only to allow 1 run for the final margin. 23/04/13 – St. Louis Kingfishers offseason acquisition SP Steve Addis gunned down the hapless Columbus Flyers today, coming within a single hit of a perfect game in a 4-0 victory. 26/04/13 – One of the top pitchers in the game, Minneapolis Conifers star SP Carlos Villarreal whitewashed the Kingfishers today on just 2 hits in a 12-0 rout. Villarreal struck out 8 batters in his shutout. 26/04/13 – SP Jack Wilkerson of the Columbus Flyers pitched a shutout win last week and went one better this time out, pitching a no-hitter in an 11-0 rout of the Atlanta Squirrels. This was one of the wildest no-hitters you will ever see as Wilkerson walked ELEVEN batters while striking out just 2! What a ridiculous game. |

MacDougall allowed a run in the 8th but we came back to load the bases with no outs in the 9th! Unfortunately, we only pushed through a single run and Gonzalez lost the game in the 10th after giving up a leadoff triple. 02/05/13 – MIA 3, BAL 1: Bruce Davis had his pitches moving today (8.0 IP, 7 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 12 K) but our offense sputtered, getting just 4 hits without a single walk wasting a great start by Davis in the progress. 03/05/13 – MON 0, BAL 1: Jacob Wiggins pitched 8 strong innings (8.0 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) and Gonzalez closed it out with the save. Durango doubled home Howard Peterson for our only run of the game. 04/06/13 – MON 12, BAL 7: The Maples sure got us back good in this one after the shutout the day before. Powlett lasted just 2 innings (2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR) and 4 of the 5 relievers who featured gave up at least 1 run. The offense managed 7 runs on 7 hits but that didn’t prove to be nearly enough today. 05/05/13 – MON 9, BAL 1: After coming close to a shutout last time out, Guy Peterson struggled (7.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 8 K). Sato gave up another 4 runs in relief and his ERA has ballooned to 8.71. A year after emerging as a superb closer for us, MR Toshinobu Sato has been consistently poor in his new role and will be demoted to AAA as I try to get him to right the ship. MR William Hendricks returns to the active roster after a solid month in AAA. I accidentally deleted this section after advancing the game so there is no hot/cold hitters for this week. However, it was Salvatore Martinez’s pinch hit homer in the 9th that got us the win! 18/05/13 – BAL 2, SJ 4: Edgar Thomas had a 3-hit game but the rest of the lineup didn’t step up, leaving Jacob Wiggins (6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) with the loss. 19/06/13 – BAL 3, SJ 4: Mark Powlett (8.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 HR) pitched the entire game but didn’t receive the support he needed to avoid his second loss of the season. Baltimore Gazette May 21st, 2013 Blackwings acquire veteran catcher Dusty Brown from Chicago Dust Devils for outfielders! Baltimore Blackwings GM Cal Ripken, Jr. pulled a fast one on insiders around the league today as he moved to shore up one of the biggest weaknesses on the team at the backstop position. Ripken has repeatedly stated in press conferences this year that he is looking to review the progress of the team at the end of May and look into making moves as required to keep the team in contention. Looks like that schedule is thrown out of the window. Yesterday, the Blackwings sent outfielders [AAA] CF Guillermo Romero (24, 1.5/1.5) and LF Felipe Saenz (25, 1/1) to the Chicago Dust Devils in exchange for veteran C Dusty Brown (32, 1.5/1.5) plus $3,000,000 in cash. Brown is making almost $5,000,000 this season in the final year of his contract but the cash is sufficient to cover the difference in player salaries in the trade. When pressed for an explanation as to why he strayed from his self-imposed schedule, Ripken cheekily replied “Hey circumstances change ya know?” There may well be truth in his comment as reports of disaccord between Brown and the Dust Devils organization surfaced during the weekend about Brown’s playing time and sources reported that Brown was seeking a trade. The Blackwings swooped in quickly to make the move while the rest of the league was not expecting it. While Brown isn’t a great player in the league it’s certainly bad news for their fellow NL East competitors to see the Blackwings upgrade one of their weakest positions in the field. While neither of the outfielders have featured prominently for the Blackwings this season, the NL Central cellar dwelling Dust Devils have a logjam at catcher but needed help in the outfield. Romero has a chance to step into the starting lineup and contribute right away. --- The Ripken Diaries May 21st, 2013 Upgrading the catcher position Well I wasn’t lying when I said I wanted to wait till the end of May before making changes to the roster. I thought 2 months was a fair period to evaluate the performance of the team without being blinded by small sample-size caveats. However, a leaked report on BNN about Chicago Dust Devils backup catcher Dusty Brown requesting a trade changed all that. While the Dust Devils didn’t officially put Brown on the trading block, sources confirmed that Brown was unhappy with his playing time and wanted out of Chicago. With the Philadelphia Quakers hanging on to a slim lead in the NL East despite their injuries, it was imperative that we try to regain control of the division before they are bolstered by the return of their key players. With Carlos Maese serviceable in center field thus far, catcher was our most pressing weakness. Incumbent starter Juan Durango is hitting .252/.298/.321 for a 74 OPS+ while playing below average defense behind the plate. Backup Etienne Cuny has been even worse with .176/.222/.235 slash lines in limited appearances. Both of them have been sub-replacement level players this season and have little potential for improvement. Prospect Shinzo Ojama has tailed off after a good start and is hitting poorly at AAA and no longer looks like a candidate to take over the major league job this season. Thus, the availability of a serviceable veteran catcher on the market was an intriguing one for me. Brown has seen limited playing time this season after being displaced at catcher by contact hitter Jose Cabral. He got what little playing time he saw in left field where he has been unsurprisingly terrible defensively and was eventually benched. Still, he is a solid defensive catcher who has been a pretty good hitter over the past three years, hitting for a 114 OPS+ in 2011 and following that up with 112 in 2012. In 83 at-bats, he is hitting .289/.344/.458 which would be a significant upgrade over Durango even if he regresses somewhat from the current numbers. Despite his trade request, Brown has been regarded as an intelligence teammate with a strong work ethic and desire to win. He was probably just miffed at the Dust Devil’s terrible record and would welcome the move to Baltimore eagerly. Brown’s only drawback is that he is making $4,880,000 this year, a pretty steep price for a below-average starter in the league. Thankfully, the Dust Devils were eager to move him after he voiced his discontent with his playing time and was willing to pay the pro-rated portion of his remaining 2013 salary if we were willing to pony up players that they felt could help them. The Dust Devils were especially weak in center field and initially wanted our AAA CF Philip House. House has been lights out in the minors this season, hitting .341/.393/.574 in AAA and can play between third base, center field and both corner outfield spots! Although Karl Wilson doesn’t think he has any potential, I would like to keep him around as he is an elite defensive center field who can hit enough to be a decent bench player. I could also have done the deal with another AAA outfielder, waiver pickup CF Carlos Martinez. Martinez has also been tearing up AAA with .329/.363/.478 slash lines and is elite at all 3 outfield positions with great speed! While he is 30 and probably doesn’t have much upside, I like the ability to have him around on a minor league contract to provide depth in the organization. The player I wanted to give up was CF Guillermo Romero. Romero is just 24 but has been buried behind House and Martinez on the AAA depth chart. He has hit decently when given playing time, but nowhere near as good as the 2 players ahead of him. He got his shot at the majors last season but stunk offensively and I don’t think he has a future as a major leaguer. Furthermore, he is merely decent in center field and is probably more suited to the corner outfield spots defensively. However, the Dust Devils thought the same and wanted more than Romero. I offered up dispensable no-upside LF Felipe Saenz and they were happy enough with the haul to sign off on it. Saenz is an all-or-nothing hitter with big home run power but struggles to get any consistent form of contact on the ball. Limited to mostly pinch-hit opportunities this season, he has just 5 hits in 33 at-bats, although 2 of those left the ballpark. Still, his horrific .176 OBP doesn’t justify his occasional power displays. Saenz has hung on the active roster since the start of the season but was about to be demoted for one of my AAA standouts anyway so I had no qualms about sending him to Chicago. For the price of 2 expendable outfielder buried on my depth chart, I got a upgrade to a serviceable veteran catcher whose salary is fully paid for. There’s pretty much nothing to lose here. With this move completed, I felt that I might as well go all the way and shake up my active roster to replace the underperformers. All 5 of my bench players have been rated as sub-replacement level players this season and that will definitely not do. Saenz has already been sent packing and Philip House will take over his spot as the 5th outfielder. House won the nod over Martinez as he is already on a major league contract and can spell the struggling Bill Woods at third base as well. Brown’s arrival relegates Durango to backup catcher and current backup Etienne Cuny will be demoted to AAA where he will play behind Ojima. Sebastien Lemonnier has not hit all year in the majors and will be demoted in favor of AAA standout Charlie Bird, who sports a .304/.428/.506 stat line in AAA. He will be mostly used as a pinch-hitter so the poor defensive ratings don’t concern me much. I considered promoting top prospect 3B Manny Montoya instead as he is hitting .323/.435/.540 in AAA and can play a standout first base but I decided that it would be better for his development to continue to get consistent playing time in AAA. Only Jason McKinney remains from the bench crew and he will need to step it up to avoid the same fate as the rest of his comrades. |

We broke open the game in the 7th when Jon O’Neal hit a grand slam for just his second major league home run! Lorenzo Garcia gave up 3 runs in relief but Julio Gonzalez got the final out to earn the save. 21/05/13 – BAL 3, NY 4: Another poor start by Martinez (5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 HR) who is having a very shaky May after a good start to the season. The offense wasn’t good enough to bail him out this time. We had the tying run at third base with just 1 out in the bottom of the 9th but Martinez and House both struck out to end the threat. Worst still, outstanding performer Rich Wilson suffered an injury during the game and diagnosis is now pending. It would be a huge loss for us if Wilson misses any significant time given his level of performance this season. 22/05/13 – BAL 12, NY 8 (10): Bruce Davis was rocked early (3.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 0 K, 2 HR) but we mounted a comeback against $15m-a-year closer Antonio Aranda to bring the game into extra innings. Thomas’s 3-RBI double in the 10th proved to be the winning runs. Despite the win, slumping 3B Bill Woods suffered an oblique strain running the bases and will go on the DL for 2 weeks as he recovers. AAA standout and top prospect 3B Manny Montoya will get his first taste of major league action as a result! Montoya has been hitting .321/.433/.548 in 43 games in AAA. Given Woods’ recent form, this may actually be a temporary upgrade for our lineup. Hopefully Woods can use the DL stint to find his swing. 23/05/13 - OFF 24/05/13 – PIT 3, BAL 1 (10): Jacob Wiggins pitched into the 10th inning (9.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) but got a loss to show for his efforts as Julio Gonzalez allowed an inherited runner to score. Wiggins has been surprisingly my most reliable starter this season after Guy Peterson. 25/05/13 – PIT 2, BAL 3: Despite giving up another pair of homers, Powlett was otherwise almost untouchable today (8.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 10 K, 2 HR). The offense sputtered but 3 runs turned out to be enough on this day. 26/05/13 – PIT 1, BAL 3: Fantastic pitching from starter Peterson (8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) bailed out offense out yet again. Peterson is establishing himself as a possible Outstanding Pitcher Award contender this season at just 24 years old! In other news, 2B Rich Wilson’s diagnosis came out today. Like Woods, he is suffering from an oblique strain. However, his one is slightly more serious and will require 3-4 weeks to recover. As Wilson goes on the DL, I am bringing up yet another top prospect, 2B Waylon Gallagher to fill his place in the majors! Gallagher is just 20 but has hit an outstanding .338/.460/.580 in AA this season and is better offensively than any other potential replacements in my organization. I could start Martinez and promote defensive wizard Dan Hurst to the bench but I felt that it is our offense that needs the boost at the moment. Hopefully Gallagher and Montoya’s massive potentials win out and they make my aggressive approach look smart. The Ripken Diaries May 31st, 2013 2013 Season 1st Trimester Report: Blackwings in 1st Place at 33-21!  PLB Standings and Leaderboards The Philadelphia Quakers were surprisingly swept by the Kansas City Cyclones to end the month of May, handing us the National League East division lead once again. Unfortunately, there is no breathing room at all as the red-hot Miami Hurricanes are on a 4-game win streak and breathing down our necks! The Cyclones have also won 6 in a row and rest just 0.5 games behind us for the wild card spot should we fall out of the division lead. The NL seems to be the more top-heavy league this season as there are 6 teams with more than 30 wins in the NL compared to just 2 in the AL. We would be sitting in a much more comfortable position if we play in the AL East or AL West. However as things are now, we look to be mired in a season-long 3-way dogfight atop of the NL East as none of the 3 teams has managed to get much separation from each other at all during the first 2 months of the season. The Hurricanes actually have the best run differential at +41 to our +18 and the Quakers’ +14 so they may be a bit unfortunately to be currently stuck in 2nd place. Still given owner Robert Anderson and my modest preseason expectations, I must say we are doing very well thus far.  Team Performance – Pitching A quick glance at the team rankings would tell you that the pitching side of the ball isn’t where our problems lie. Our 197 runs against in 54 games (3.65 per game) ranks second in the National League behind the juggernaut Dallas Outlaws (#1 in runs scored AND allowed in the PLB). Both the starting rotation (3.51 ERA, 2nd) and bullpen (3.39 ERA, 5th) have been consistently good and we definitely won’t be anywhere near the division lead without their stellar contributions. Guy Peterson has been the star of the rotation thus far, leading the NL with 2.56 FIP to go with 2.6 WAR. He is amongst the league leaders with 0.40 HR/9 and 5.15 K/BB and has a well-deserved 2.69 ERA. Peterson is no-doubt a superstar in the league. #1 starter Mark Powlett has the highest ERA on our staff at 4.23 but that has been a product of bad luck stranding runners. Part of it is due to his home run decencies (1.4 HR/9) but that has been out of line with his career norms and even then his FIP is just 3.59. Powlett has actually pitched very well and leads the NL with a superb 6.7 K/BB rate! Our 2nd best starter has surprisingly been rookie Jacob Wiggins! The workmanlike Wiggins doesn’t miss many bats but pitches deep into games (7.1 IP per start) and keep the ball in the park (0.5 HR/9). His 3.44 ERA isn’t due to luck as his FIP is even lower at 3.25! Fellow rookie Bruce Davis has a better ERA at 3.16 and similarly great stamina, however he has allowed 1.4 HR/9 and his FIP sits at a high 4.56. He needs to reduce the amount of meatballs he serves up to avoid regression to his ERA. The only member of the rotation I’m worried about is #3 starter Ricardo Martinez. Despite an excellent .750 groundball rate, Martinez is serving up 1.4 HR/9 and that has ballooned to 2.3 HR/9 in May. It isn’t just due to the small sample size as Martinez was very homer prone last season as well. It’s a trend that I’m pretty uncomfortable with considering I have money tied up in Martinez through the 2015 season. Due to the general competence of my starters, many of my bullpen members haven’t actually gotten much work this season. Closer Julio Gonzalez has actually been my busiest reliever with 27.0 IP. He leads the PLB with 19 saves at the moment but can be shaky at times as his 3 losses can attest to. Still, his overall numbers are good and he has been very satisfactory as a low-cost closer for us. William Hendricks and Toshinobu Sato have had bouts of wildness that resulted in demotions but Hendricks has been decent since returning to the majors and Sato is currently destroying AAA hitters. Should anyone fall into a slump, Sato will be ready to rejoin the bullpen to replace him. Pitching is clearly the strength of this team and I expect that to continue all season long. Team Performance – Batting Not a pretty picture here at all. Rich Wilson was our most valuable position player and was hitting .331/.368/.526 before his injury with 1.9 WAR but the highest OPS out of the regulars on our active roster now belongs to first baseman Michizane Motsuzuki at just .807! Unfortunately, he plays a premium offensive position and is a poor defender so he has only been worth 0.5 WAR so far this season. In fact with Wilson out, sleek fielding speedster Maese has the highest WAR in my lineup at 1.1 and that is even after he had a .565 OPS in a dismal May offensively. Second is rookie Manny Montoya at 0.7 and he has played all of 6 games in the majors! Jon O’Neal has been hot recently and may well be my best position player right now even though he is 22 years old. He has the next highest OPS on the season at .760. Edgar Thomas is at .755 after staying hot through May but April standout Howard Peterson is headed in the other direction following a 2-week slump. New acquisition Dusty Brown hasn’t hit well in his one-and-a-half weeks here but the sample size is too small to be conclusive there. Bench players Durango, Martinez and McKinney have gotten a fair number of at-bats but have done little with them with season OPS of .630, .604 and .586 respectively. They have actually been the better options off the bench as the rest of the bench mob has been demoted to AAA! Lineup anchor Bill Woods was hitting .222/.317/.392 before his injury and may well be a downgrade from top prospect Montoya at the hot corner. The offense as a unit ranks just 11th thus far and it doesn’t get any easier with top hitter Wilson out for another month. I need significant improvements from players such as Bill Woods and Howard Peterson in order to field a passable offense that can keep us in contention for the division title. |

We eventually won the game with 2 runs in the 8th. Manny Montoya hit the first of (hopefully) many home runs in his major league career. 28/05/13 – PHX 0, BAL 2: Another strong start by Bruce Davis (8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K) and another easy save for Julio Gonzalez. 29/05/13 – PHX 9, BAL 2: Wiggins was rocked badly (6.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR) and the bullpen didn’t help him out when MacDougall allowed a homer that scored 2 inherited runners. The toothless offense never really threatened on this day. 30/05/13 – OFF 31/05/13 – BAL 3, PHI 6: Mark Powlett failed to show up for the first game of a key series and didn’t even get out of the 3rd inning! His final line: 2.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, just awful. The bullpen stopped the bleeding but the deficit was too much for our offense to overcome. 01/06/13 – BAL 7, PHI 4: Peterson didn’t dominated but was solid enough (7.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) to come up with the win. O’Neal, Peterson and House each homered in this one. We lost CF Carlos Maese in this game to a sore elbow while making a defensive play. He will go on the 15-day DL and miss about 2 weeks. AAA CF Carlos Martinez will be promoted and take his spot in center field. 02/06/13 – BAL 6, PHI 7: We got to NL ERA leader Yo****ake Watanabe for 5 runs in just 3 innings but our bullpen couldn’t hold the lead! MacDougall blew the save by giving up a 2-run homer in the 8th but we tied the game on Waylon Gallagher’s first major league home run in the bottom of the inning. However, Lorenzo Garcia surrendered the losing run in the 9th. On the bright side, Carlos Martinez continued his hot week with a 4-hit game. 08/06/13 – BAL 8, NO 4: Ricardo Martinez struggled at times but still picked up the win (7.0 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) after both Thomas and Montoya had 3-hit games to pace a strong offensive showing. 09/06/13 – BAL 6, NO 0: Finally a strong pitching performance! Bruce Davis put the team on his back and twirled a complete game shutout (9.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K). The offense did more than enough on this day for a comfortable win. He had full rest though so he did fine (7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). Unfortunately Gonzalez lost the game in the 9th, his 4th loss of the season. 04/06/13 – BAL 0, MIA 6: Wiggins had 7 days of rest for this one and may have been rusty, struggling horribly with control and getting knocked out very early (4.2 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 6 BB, 1 K, 1 HR). The Hurricanes pitching, led by dominant starter Gabriel Santiago, allowed just 2 hits during the game. 05/06/13 – BAL 0, MIA 1: Yet another 1-run loss it’s officially panic time in our clubhouse with the Hurricanes opening up a 4.5 game lead. Guy Peterson had a very strong outing (8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) but the offense was shutout once again in the loss. 06/06/13 – BAL 2, MIA 3: Ricardo Martinez did enough to keep us in the game (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). After 3 perfect innings of middle relief, Gonzalez allowed yet another run in the 9th to take his 5th loss of the season and 2nd of the series. Hurricanes starter Rodrigo Jaramillo pitched a complete game for the win. 07/06/13 – BAL 3, BOS 7: The losing streak hits 5 as Bruce Davis threw up a clunker (6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 5 K, 2 HR). The lineup continue to struggle to put up runs to keep us in the game. 08/06/13 – BAL 3, BOS 2: I let Wiggins start this one as I wanted to keep the original rotation order. Wiggin wasn’t bothered starting on short rest, pitching a strong outing (7.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) for snap our losing streak. 09/06/13 – BAL 3, BOS 5: Powlett’s inability to get critical outs with runners on came back to haunt him again (6.0 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 7 K). The peripherals are there but he just hasn’t been able to strand runners consistently this season. On the bright side, both Rich Wilson and Carlos Maese come off the DL today and will begin their rehab assignments at AAA Marissa. The Ripken Diaries June 17th, 2013 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft Round 1, 13th Overall: C Bill Poole (S, 21, 1/5); Bonus Demand: $3,000,000 (Easy) I expect us to finish with a winning record this year so this may be our last (relatively) high draft pick in a while. Poole was widely seen as a top-10 prospect in the draft but slipped to us at 13th. Karl Wilson was ecstatic was he sees Poole as a future superstar offensive player with no holes in his offensive game. His only weaknesses are a lack of speed on the basepaths (inconsequential) and his defense. While he will never be an average catcher in the league, his tremendous offensive upside makes up for it. He performed well against great competition at Texas, putting up a 1.037 OPS. Catcher is one of our key positional weaknesses and I hope Poole will be ready to take over the job sometime during the 2015 season. Round 2, 49th Overall: LF Lowell Carter (R, 17, 0.5/5); Bonus Demand: Slot (Easy) Carter is another player with all the tools he needs offensively. His fielding ratings are poor due to a lack of experience, but he has the tools to become an above average corner outfielder. He crushed high school hitters with a .551 AVG but is very raw despite his big upside. Carter slipped in the draft due to character concerns but I hope he can mature with age. Round 3, 78th Overall: C Carl Douglas (R, 20, 1/1.5); Bonus Demand: Slot (Extremely Hard) It may appear weird to pick 2 college catchers in our first 3 picks but this was a very thin draft and there weren’t any enticing options available. Douglas is an average defensive and offensive catcher with big home run power in his swing. He will be my backup plan in case Poole doesn’t pan out. Round 4, 109th Overall: CL John von Schachtmeyer (R, 22, 1.5/4); Bonus Demand: Slot (Easy) von Schachtmeyer projects to be a solid set-up man or closer in the majors who doesn’t have a clear weakness. He put up good numbers in college against great competition at California and should be major league ready with 1 or 2 seasons if he develops as expected. Round 5, 139th Overall: SP Esteban Trejo (L, 17, 0.5/4.5); Bonus Demand: Slot (Extremely Hard) Trejo is a very raw pitching prospect with excellent stuff and plus movement. However, control is a huge problem for him at the moment, although he has the potential for improvement. Another concern is his 3rd pitch, a changeup, is very underdeveloped and may not improve much. Of course it’s not impossible for a pitcher to dominate with just 2 plus-plus pitches (Guy Peterson) so I will stash him in the low minors and watch his development. |

Baltimore Gazette June 20th, 2013 Baltimore Blackwings offload Ricardo Martinez and Bill Woods in separate deals! Blackwings GM Cal Ripken, Jr. surprised many when he acquired veteran catcher Dusty Brown late last month but that proved to be nothing compared to the couple of deals he finalized today. 2 established but underperforming veterans on the team were sent packing in separate deals that netted a few intriguing piece for the Blackwings. While both Ricardo Martinez and Bill Woods have disappointed this season, few expected the Blackwings to cut ties with them so swiftly and decisively given that they are among the already few holdovers from the previous regime and were veteran voices on a young roster. However the a recent losing streak pretty much ending the team’s division title chances, Ripken showed no mercy in axing both of them from the roster, perhaps to set an example for others on the roster. In a trade announced early yesterday morning, the Blackwings sent SP Ricardo Martinez (L, 28, 4.5/4.5) and CF Philip House (R, 26, 1.5/1.5) to the Montreal Maples for promising CF Silverio “Bad Moon” Santar (L, 24, 3.5/5) and minor league CL Mario Mateo (R, 21, 4/5). Later in the day, news of the other deal surfaced with the Blackwings sending 3B Bill Woods (R, 27, 4/4), MR Danny MacDougall (L, 33, 5/5), C Juan Durango (R, 26, 1.5/1.5) and prospect 1B Sebastien Lemonnier (S, 22, 1.5/4) to the PLB-leading Dallas Outlaws for their CL Stephane Thomas (R, 27, 5/5). It’s hard to tell if the trade improves the immediate prospects of the team. While Woods is expendable due to the great start by uber-prospect Manny Montoya, there is no major league caliber starting pitching in the Blackwings organization to replace Martinez and that is a significant that needs to be filled. Santar is one of the most promising players in the game and will definitely be a key fixture in the Blackwings outfield down the road but it’s unclear if he will represent an upgrade over the pretty effective combination of Carlos Martinez and Carlos Maese this season. Thomas is one of the best closers in the game and should be a small upgrade over the shaky-at-times Julio Gonzalez. --- The Ripken Diaries June 20th, 2013 Underachievers Must Go! It’s been less than half the season since I took over the team and already the roster bears almost no resemblance to the one that ended last season. Between our starting rotation and lineup, only Mark Powlett and the Petersons (Guy and Howard) are hold-overs from last season’s version. That’s not necessarily a bad thing since last year’s team was pretty dreadful and headed nowhere fast. While this year’s team may not necessarily be able to ride the hot start to end the season with a winning record, there is no doubt that we are stacked with talent up and down the roster and have as bright a future as any team in the league. The addition of Silverio “Bad Moon” Santar gives us yet another piece that can be a cornerstone of our franchise. The 15th pick of the 2012 draft and also the #15 prospect in the PLB before the season, Santar made the leap straight to the majors this season for the Montreal Maples in his 2nd professional season despite spending most of his rookie year in Single-A. He has more than held his own in the big leagues; in 67 games he hit .274/.318/.452 with 8 HRs and 40 RBIs, good offensive numbers from center field. Karl Wilson thinks Santar has superstar potential and will hit for both contact and power very well. Santar isn’t a speedster on the basepaths but has outstanding range in the outfield and is one of the best fielding center fielders in the game. Despite an average arm, he is rated as a top-grade right fielder as well. He is left-handed, which doesn’t play well in our lopsided home park. However, our lineup is already dominated by right-handers (youngsters O’Neal and Gallagher are the only southpaws) so I was looking to add another lefty into the mix. As a bonus, he comes with an awesome nickname too! I don’t know why he is called “Bad Moon”, but I know that is one bad-ass nickname. With Bad Moon in-tow, we have a foursome of top prospects (O’Neal, Montoya, Santar, Gallagher) that will hopefully anchor our lineup for years to come! All 4 currently have OPS+ of at least 96 and their average age is just a tender 22. I’m looking forward to big things from this group of young guns. The best part of this deal was that we didn’t need to give up a premium player in order to make the trade. The Maples were more than willing to trade Santar straight-up for Ricardo Martinez! That’s the Ricardo Martinez who is 2-6 in 15 starts with a 4.62 ERA and 1.41 WHIP this season! Yes Martinez is definitely capable of more than he has shown thus far and the Maples rotation is a disaster (4.94 starter’s ERA). Still, can’t see that justifying trading away a top prospect like Santar for a struggling pitcher who may not even represent an upgrade to the rotation given how he has pitched this year! In fact, the Maples were so eager to obtain Martinez that I milked another good prospect, closer Mario Mateo, out of the deal just by adding 4th string center fielder Philip House (obsolete behind Santar, Martinez and Maese). Mateo was the #83 prospect in the PLB before the season and has ridiculous stuff and movement, including a fastball that EXCEEDS 101 MPH! His only weakness is his extremely inconsistent control. His numbers in AAA this season: 26.1 IP, 11 SV, 2.39 ERA, 0 HR, 21 BB, 45 K, 1.29 WHIP, .151 OAVG. He has survived walking a ridiculous 7.18 hitters per 9 by striking out more than twice of that and being virtually unhittable! I don’t think that shaky command can cut it at the major league level, but Mateo clearly has talent and I will keep him in AAA to allow him to try to hone his control to an acceptable level. Another added bonus to the trade is that it allows me to get out from the $13,000,000 owed to Ricardo Martinez the next 2 seasons, giving me more financial flexibility to improve my team in the offseason. Later in the day, I managed to sign off on another trade, with Bill Woods being the veteran sent out of town this time. It’s no secret that I’ve been talking to some other teams about Woods for some time. It’s unfortunate that his Blackwings career ended with an injury but Manny Montoya had such an awesome month in his absence (.359/.394/.554, 5 HR, 12 RBI) that I cannot possibly justify sending him back to AAA or the bench. Montoya can play first base but Motsuzuki is more firmly entrenched there than Woods is at third base due to both financial and performance reasons. Woods was already earning $6,000,000 this season and would see another rise in the offseason during arbitration. Given his poor performance this year, I wasn’t looking forward to paying him around $8m next season for sure. The market for Woods wasn’t big as only contenders would be interesting in acquiring a veteran that doesn’t exactly come cheap. We found our taker in the Dallas Outlaws. The PLB-best Dallas Outlaws are the class of the league and are going all-out to win this season. Woods represents an upgrade at third base if he can return to his former self. Durango will also start immediately for them with their giant crater at catcher. The arrival of Dusty Brown (although he has been very mediocre so far) made Durango expendable and I didn’t mind letting him go. Lemonnier is a fringe prospect who got a cup of tea in the majors this season but failed to productive as a bench player and was sent back to AAA. With a few other fringe first base prospects in our system, the loss of Lemonnier won’t hurt us much. Initially I was hoping to get a starting pitcher to compensate for the loss of Martinez but that was impossible with Stein in charge. For the price of these 3 players, I was able to turn Danny MacDougall into former Outlaws closer Stephane Thomas. MacDougall has a 7:1 K/BB ratio this year and a 0.85 WHIP. Unfortunately, he has been frequented by the long-ball and has a mediocre 3.82 ERA as a result. We got to upgrade him to Thomas, who leads the PLB with 22 saves at the moment and has been one of the best closers in the league this season. In 35.1 IP, Thomas pitched a line of 2.29 ERA, 1 HR, 7 BB, 27 K, 1.02 WHIP. Those are just very good numbers across the board and a testament to how well-balanced Thomas is as a pitcher. Despite Gonzalez’s 21 saves, he has been very shaky in a number of outings and has already cost us a few games this season. Thomas will step in as the new closer and hopefully give us a more reliable option at the end of games. Thomas isn’t happy being traded from a World Series contender to a slumping team like ours but I believe his mood will turn if we win more games. Thomas is earning $4,000,000 this season and will probably see a rise as he enters free agency next season. I will try to lock him up long-term before that happens though. Losing Woods put a small damper on our slowly growing fan interest. However it was a necessary evil that was going to come sooner or later so I’m not too concerned about that. If we can snap out of our month-long funk, the fans would show their appreciation I’m sure. |

The Ripken Diaries June 24th, 2013 2013 Season Week #13 Report Team Statistics Team Record: 40-37, .519, 10 GB, 3rd Runs Scored: 300 (12th in NL) Runs Against: 301 (3rd in NL) Defensive Eff.: .693 (9th in NL) Power Ranking: 16th, 91 points Owner Mood: Ecstatic; Fan Interest: 56 (-1); Attendance per game: 34,061 Week Record: 2-5 17/06/13 – BAL 1, TOR 0 (10): Guy Peterson (7.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 9 K) and the bullpen held the fort long enough for the offense to finally muster a run in the 10th to win the game. 18/06/13 – BAL 6, TOR 7: Ricardo Martinez’s final start in an Orioles uniform went horribly (4.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) and we wasted a good performance from the offense. His fate was definitely sealed after this game and I couldn’t send him out of town fast enough before he damages his own stock even further. 19/06/13 – BAL 3, TOR 8: Another lackluster start by Bruce Davis (2.2 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 K). We never really had a chance in this one after Davis gave up a 7-run 3rd inning. 20/06/13 – BAL 1, TOR 4: Wiggins wasn’t good enough (6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 6 K, 1 HR) to stop the losing streak. Our season is in serious danger of going up in smoke with the recent struggles of our starting rotation. 21/05/13 – PHI 2, BAL 1: Yet another loss but you can’t blame Powlett for this one; he was dominating (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 12 K). The toothless lineup remains incapable of generating of any offense. 22/06/13 – PHI 4, BAL 1: The losing streak hits 5! Neither Peterson (6.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, 1 HR) was effective in this one. 23/06/13 – PHI 3, BAL 5: Mr. Hit-or-miss (Bruce Davis) was great on this day (7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) and our lineup gave us a significant lead that our bullpen couldn’t fumble away. Julio Gonzalez leaked another 2 runs before Stephane Thomas came in to strike out the final batter to record his first save in a Blackwings uniform. Hot – No one, although Santar had a good week (half was spent with the Maples so I’m not including him) Not – Michizane Motsuzuki, Waylon Gallagher, Jon O’Neal, Manny Montoya and Edgar Thomas.
