I play out every game, including preseason. The only things I don't control are Fielding and Baserunning (too many unknowns with baserunning -- exactly how deep is the ball? did he catch in on the run? was he moving forwards or backwards when he caught it? what kind of jump did the runner get?)

I wasn't until I played every single inning that I began noticing a lot of trends that don't immediately come up in the box score.

For example:

Runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 Out
Batter at the plate (call him Batter1) strikes out -- unforgivable
Next batter (Batter2) pops out/grounds out/otherwise gets out -- forgivable, as he couldn't trade a run for an out

If this is a recurring pattern, the overall effect isn't just a couple of runs here and there. It is killing potential rallies -- tons of runs over the long haul, enough to affect standings. Is Batter1 in the wrong spot in the lineup? Or are the baserunners getting on base more often than expected and really should be at the top of the lineup? Or should the runner on 3rd have already scored, but he's too slow on the bases?

Another scenario:

Is having three weak hitters in a row (because I can't afford better ones) preferable to interspersing them with some better hitters in between?

There's no simple answer to that. All I know is that I'll find the answers I'm looking for a lot quicker by playing out the games rather than simming past them.

You can try looking at your players and anticipating how a certain lineup will flow. But it doesn't always play out like that.

I sim most games. When it's late in the season and we're in a pennant race or it's a terrific pitching matchup I will play them out. Typically I have the real-time simulator running while I play some other game/console. The real-time simulator is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I also play out all playoff games.
