Team: Brooklyn Brawlers League: American 1900 Record: 97-65 All-time Record: 2534-2326 All-time Winning Percentage: .521 All-time Rank:2 Playoff Appearances:7 World Series Championships: 4 The Brooklyn Brawlers have been one of the best team's in history, winning three World Series between 1877-1880, and have the second highest winning percentage of all-time. The Brawlers are the defending American League Champions, having lost in the World Series to the Detroit Wolverines. Starting pitcher Colin 'Sinner' Cobb has been in Brooklyn for two years after joining as a free agent, and has gone 22-7 with a 2.28 ERA and 268 strikeouts which was good enough to win the Pitcher of the Year Award, and 18-12 with a 2.92 ERA last year. Team: Cincinnati Cavalry League: American 1900 Record: 67-95 All-time Record: 2454-2406 All-time Winning Percentage: .505 All-time Rank:6 Playoff Appearances:4 World Series Championships: 2 The Cavalry lost 95 games last season, which was the second highest total in the majors. Their offense was ranked 6th in the AL, while their pitching was 7th, and defense was ranked 8th. With holes all over, Cleveland fans have one thing to be proud of, a top ranked minor league system. David Davis, a 19 year old left fielder, was rated the fifth best prospect in baseball. Davis has five tool potential, and will be key to the Cavalier's success. Pitching prospects Hiang-Ta Duan and Pedro Aguilar join Davis on the prospect list, with shortstop Jeremy Jamison and first baseman Pete Meeks. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-04-2013 at 11:12 PM. |

Team: Cleveland Blues League: American 1900 Record: 62-100 All-time Record: 2292-2568 All-time Winning Percentage: .472 All-time Rank:16 Playoff Appearances:0 World Series Championships: 0 The Cleveland Blues have the worst all-time record in the league, and have never went to the playoffs and are only one of two teams that haven't won a World Series. The Blues are coming off two consecutive 100 loss seasons in a row. The Blues went out and brought in free agent starting pitcher Terry 'Destiny' Robbins on a seven year contract. While Robbins has been very effective when on the mound, winning a Pitcher of the Year Award in 1896 when he went 23-6 with a 1.84 ERA, and winning 22 games the past two years, there are legitimate injury concerns with Robbins, who missed significant time with injury in 4 of his 8 seasons. It will be interesting to see if the Blues' gamble pays off and Robbins can help Cleveland to their first postseason appearance. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-04-2013 at 11:13 PM. |

Team: New York Knights League: American 1900 Record: 78-84 All-time Record: 2374-2486 All-time Winning Percentage: .488 All-time Rank:13 Playoff Appearances:2 World Series Championships: 1 The Knights had the second best offense in the American League last season, and led the league in both home runs and stolen bases. New York let starting centerfielder Jorge Salazar leave via free agency, after he hit .249 with 32 home runs and 25 stolen bases. The Knights will be relying on 23 year old Gil Smith to replace him in centerfield this year, after Smith backed up all three outfield positions last year while hitting .260 with 18 home runs and stealing 85 bases. Team: Orlando Wizards League: American 1900 Record: 82-80 All-time Record: 2564-2296 All-time Winning Percentage: .528 All-time Rank:1 Playoff Appearances:8 World Series Championships: 4 The Orlando Wizards appeared in five straight World Series from 1882-1886, and won three in a row from 1883-1885, and last won a World Series two years ago, before faltering last year as one of the unluckiest teams in the league with a pythagorean record that showed Orlando should have won 8 more games than they did. 27 year old pitcher Pacio Merelo was selected for his first All-Star game last season, and won 18 games with a 3.30 ERA. Merelo has spent his entire career with Orlando, and signed an extension that will keep him in Orlando through 1906. Team: Providence Whalers League: American 1900 Record: 91-71 All-time Record: 2432-2428 All-time Winning Percentage: .500 All-time Rank:9 Playoff Appearances:5 World Series Championships: 1 Last, but not least, the Providence Whalers are coming off a third place finish, and are just two years away from their last World Series appearance. The big bat in the middle of the line-up is first baseman Ivan Cabrera, who hit .306 with 30 home runs last year for the Whalers. Cabrera was a former second round pick of the Brooklyn Brawlers, drafted out of high school in Belmont, California. A trade to Boston gave Cabrera the opportunity to start for the first time in his career, and his power numbers and average have steadily risen. At 28 years old Cabrera has 180 home runs for his career, and has raised his batting average to .272 for his career. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-04-2013 at 11:14 PM. |

4/1/1901 - The road to 3000
Never in the history of the league has a player reached 3000 hits for his career, but 38 year old Jorge Cruz hopes to be the first, finishing last season with 2751. Cruz finished last season with the Orlando Wizards, and became a free agent following the year. After a lengthy holdout, Cruz signed a one year deal with the New York Empires, hoping to rebound from a poor year last season, in which he hit .236, a career low for the .287 career hitter. Cruz has never gotten more than 193 hits in a season with a career .399 on-base percentage, so he'll need to play well enough to earn a contract for next season needing 246 hits to reach the magic number. Cruz has the career lead in hits by 40 over second place Dennis Long, who retired back in 1898. The next closest active player is Paul Charles who has 2519 hits, and is 37 years old. Charles hit .268 for the Washington Capitals last season, and collected 161 hits. Whether Charles can catch Cruz, or either can reach 3000 remains to be seen. Career Hit Leaders 1. Jorge Cruz #-2754 2. Dennis Long -2711 3. Howard Smith - 2569 4. Salvador Gonzalez - 2549 5. Paul Charles #-2547 6. Wilson Guzman - 2532 7. Timoteo Fuentes - 2507 8. Willis Potts #-2447 9. 4/1/1901 - A look at the win leaders
One more look at the league leaders before things get going, as I noticed that the top five players on the career wins list are all active.
Fernando Perez is the career leader with 360 wins coming in to the season. Perez just turned 44, and his best days are behind him, but the five time Pitcher of the Year still has a little gas left in his tank. In his prime with the Chicago Pirates Perez was absolutely dominate, going 26-3 with a 2.15 ERA while striking out 329 batters in 284 innings in 1881. Perez won over 20 games seven times in his career, including 26 twice. Perez also leads the league with 5261 strikeouts in his career, and has a career WAR of 186.64. He should be a first ballot Hall of Famer when he is eligible. Number two on the list isn't too far behind, as Jared 'Bear' Mixon trails in the win column by 2 with 358 career wins. At 40 years old Mixon has also won 5 Pitcher of the Year awards and with a career ERA of 2.66 and 4228 strikeouts, and a career WAR of 169.2 should also be a lock for first ballot Hall of Famers. From 1889-1894 Mixon won 138 games, including a 28-7 season. When all is said and done he may just come out on top. Dillon 'Bull' Beeler is just 6 wins behind with 352 career wins, and two Pitcher of the Year Awards under his belt. The 44 year old has never been as dominate as the other two, and isn't the pitcher he once was, going 9-13 with a 5.28 ERA last season. David 'Skeet' Ward has 297 career wins and has done everything in his power to get to 300, but it hasn't been easy. Needing just 5 wins he signed a two year contract with the Cleveland Blues where he went 2-12 with a 5.84 ERA the first year, and didn't pitch the second year. Ward called in some favors though, and convinced the Chicago Pirates to give him another chance this year, trying to win his 300th in a city where he pitched his first 18 years in the league. The last on the list that I'll talk about is Jesus Rodriguez, who needs 6 wins to get to 300. At 39 years old Rodriguez is hanging on by a thread though, and made just 9 starts last year with Cleveland before shifting to the bullpen. He signed a one year deal with Providence, where he'll be pitching out of the bullpen. Career Win Leaders 1. Fernando Perez #-360 2. Jared Mixon #-358 3. Dillon Beeler #-352 4. David Ward #-297 5. Jesus Rodriguez #-294 6. Scott Hooper - 281 7. Enrique Carrillo #-278 8. Alberto Sandoval - 276 9. Ralph Dunn - 275 10. Roberto Deason #-269 11. Ed Dundee - 269 12. Jeremiah Cox - 267 13. Pat Jones - 266 14. Mario Carbajal - 250 15. Jim Jones #-249 16. Jose Cabrera - 245 17. Tracy Marshall #-234 18. Jose Torres - 234 19. Antonio Vazquez - 231 20. Jorge Ramos - 219 21. Jayson Bennett - 216 22. Victor Pollock - 216 23. Miguel Martinez - 215 24. Joe Wilson - 214 25. Vicente Campos - 213 Last edited by NYY #23; 02-04-2013 at 11:15 PM. |

With his early season success, Allgood has moved up to 7th place on the all-time home run list. He is signed through 1902 with the New York Knights and should move up one or more slots before the end of the year. Becoming the third player with 500 home runs is a long shot though. 1. 5/15/1901- The Curious Career of Pat Parker
In the history of the league there have been two triple crown winners, both by Pat 'Moo' Parker of the Cleveland Blues, in back to back seasons in 1878 and 1879. In 1878 Parker hit 59 home runs, with a .342 batting average and drove in 152 RBI. The next year he hit 47 home runs, drove in 144 runs, and had a .337 batting average. The 26 year old was entering free agency for the first time in his career with a career batting average of .337, 209 home runs, 729 RBI, 691 runs scored, 315 stolen bases, and one of the best young players in the league coming off two straight Batter of the Year Awards. After four disappointing second place seasons in a row, including a 107 and 102 win season, the Cleveland Blues decided to it was time to rebuild and wouldn't offer Parker a contract extension, and gave his starting job to 24 year old Bob Mills, who hit just 1 home run while hitting .241. Attendance dropped, and Cleveland hasn't finished higher than third place and never gotten within 5 wins of 93 wins, their lowest total during their second place run giving their fans the blues. It's been 21 years in Cleveland, and fans still believe in the 'Moo Curse'. As far as Parker goes, he chose to retire rather than play for another team, despite some lucrative contract offers on the table. Parker is now 47 years old, and returned to Illinois following his playing days where he began coaching at Willowbrook High School, and raising his son. Parker still takes batting practice with the team, and the kids on the team still say the lefty with the perfect swing could play in the majors today. Pat Parker has no desire to suit up again though, and after staying away from the majors for 20 years, he attended his first game last year as a spectator, watching his son Robby play on Opening Day for the Philadelphia Freedom. Before the game last year Robby was hitting .251 in three years with Philadelphia. Last year he broke out hitting .320 with 30 home runs and 134 RBI, and again is off to a hot start this year, hitting .386 with 5 home runs. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-04-2013 at 11:16 PM. |

Things remain close in both the American League and National League, with two teams within 2 games in the American League, and three teams within 2 games in the National League. The New York Empires have won five straight to jump to the top of the National League. League Leaders AVG: Robbie Parker, PHI - .381 OBP: Ken Marshall, ORL - .460 HRs: Joe Beatty, BAL - 19 RBI: Robbie Parker, PHI - 52 WAR: Robbie Parker, PHI - 3.8 SB: Walt Hunt, IND - 40 ERA: Terry Robbins, CLE - 1.36 W: Lorenzo Cabrera, IND - 8 SV: Steve Carter, CHI - 14 K's: Don Calhoun, BAL - 109 WAR: Tracy Marshall, PRV - 3.6 Player Watch Yesterday Jose Gonzalez of the Philadelphia Freedom went 3-4 to raise his batting average to .292 for the season and pick up career hit number 2500. At 35 years old Gonzalez is in the second of a three year contract with Philadelphia and the first baseman is a career .304 hitter. Gonzalez won the Outstanding Hitter of the Year Award in 1894 playing for the Boston Americans, and has 12 straight years of collecting 174 or more hits and he's on pace for year 13. Based on his history Gonzalez should have an excellent shot of reaching 3000 hits in his career. News and Notes • Jose Valdez of the New York Empires picked up career hit number 2000 in a 10-5 win loss to the Indianapolis Indians. • Brooklyn's Jim 'Lawdog' Jones picked up career win number 250 against the Baltimore Black Sox. • Robbie Parker of the Freedom won the National League Batter of the Month after hitting .376 with 4 home runs, 27 RBI, and 16 runs scored. During the month Parker hit safely in 21 straight games before his streak ended. • Don Calhoun of the Baltimore Black Sox pitched a 3 hitter while striking out 11 in an 8-0 shutout of the New York Knights • Terry 'Destiny' Robbins of the Cleveland Blues won the Pitcher of the Month Award in May after going 4-0 with a 0.89 ERA in 50 2/3 innings. The tight battles remain in both the AL and NL, with Baltimore leading Providence by a half game, and New York leading Detroit by half a game in the NL. Rogers has spent his entire career with the New York Empires and signed an extension through 1904 during the offseason. Rogers has all the tools necessary to succeed, but has struggled to put it all together in the same season. Rogers hit 26 home runs last year, stole 29 bases the year before that, and hit .290 in 1897. This season has been Roger's best all-around season so far, and his 3.5 WAR is second only to Robby Parker in the NL. He's one of the main reasons for New York's improvements this season, and Empires' fans hope his success will continue. News and Notes • Juvenal Assuno of the Philadelphia Freedom picked up career win number 250 when he won his first game of the year during a 6-0 shutout against the Detroit Wolverines • Terry 'Destiny' Robbins picked up another Pitcher of the Month Award after going 4-2 with a 1.89 ERA to improve his record for the season to 12-2 • 23 year old Terry 'Butterball' Moore went 4-1 with a 2.01 ERA to win the NL Pitcher of the Month Award. Providence and Baltimore are still battling it out in the American League, while Detroit has opened up a 3 1/2 game lead in the National League. The 27 year old hit three home runs in a 9-1 win over Orlando earlier this month, and won the AL Batter of the Month after hitting .304 with 11 home runs, 28 RBI, and 19 runs scored. Herring is one of the better fielding third baseman in the league, already winning one Gold Glove. Herring is hitting a career high .292 this season, with an OPS+ of 147 so far, also a career high. News and Notes • Kenny 'Basket Case' Wurtemburg of the New York Knights won the 200th game of his career at the age of 41 • Alfonso Galindo of the Indians hit .364 with 8 home runs, 19 RBI, and scored 22 runs this month, and the 22 year old won the NL Batter of the Month Award. • Chalk up another Pitcher of the Month Award for 29 year old Don Calhoun of the Baltimore Black Sox, who went 4-0 this month to improve his record to 15-4 for the year. Marshall held opponents to a .207 batting average and improved his record for the season to 19-7. Marshall is signed through the 1903 season with the Whalers and looks like a safe bet for winning 20 games for the fifth time in his career. News and Notes • 32 year old Bobby Juarez of the New York Empires hit career home run number 300 this month • Pedro Ornelas of the Boston Americans picked up career hit number 2000 • 24 year old Terry 'Butterball' Moore went 4-0 with a 1.52 ERA to win the NL Pitcher of the Month, the fourth time he has won the award in his career. 9/30/1901 - National League One Game Playoff
After 162 games the Chicago Pirates and Detroit Wolverines finished the season tied up, to force a one game playoff. Of course it wouldn't be complete without an extra inning ending, as the Wolverines needed 12 innings to put away the Pirates.

With the first draft pool published it's time to give our first two players their second chance. Since this idea really started reading about Thurman Munson on the anniversary of his death I thought that it would only be appropriate to start with him in the first draft class.
Munson was the fourth pick in the 1968 draft and played his entire 11 year career with the Yankees, and is the only Yankee to win both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player award. Munson was the first Yankee captain since Lou Gehrig, and hit .292 with 1558 hits, 113 home runs, and 701 RBI during his 11 year career. Munson died on August 2, 1979 practicing takeoffs and landings at an Ohio airport at the age of 32. I was five when he died, so I don't remember him playing, but #15 was always one of my favorites. Josh Gibson is the second catcher to get his second chance. While Gibson was elected to the Hall of Fame, he never got a chance to play in the majors. Gibson was selected as the 18th best player of all-time by Sporting News in 1998, and while his actual totals are hard to quantify, he is listed by some sources as hitting a home run every 10.6 AB. Gibson died of a stroke in 1947 at the age of 35, three months before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. Last edited by NYY #23; 02-05-2013 at 08:14 PM. |

I'm sure you already have them on your personal list, but I'd love to see second chances go to Mark Fidrych and especially Shoeless Joe. It'd be cool to see all of the Black Sox banned players be given a second chance, actually.
