1925 - Jones leads the league
Leroy 'Cowboy' Jones was a career minor leaguer who played in both the Piedmont League and Texas League during his minor league career, and hit 164 career home runs, including 37 in 1930. This year Jones not only led the league in home runs with 36, which is the second highest total ever, but rounded things out by hitting .399 and driving in 130 runs. Jones put up a 11.2 WAR and 209 OPS+ while steadily getting better each year in the league. At 25 years old, he'll definitely be one to watch. (While I'm 99.9% sure that isn't really Jones' picture, it is in my world.) Babe Ruth led the league most of the year, but hit just 4 home runs after July. Joe Hauser made his debut on the career home run list, with John Newell (88) and Dobie Moore (86) dropping off. 1926 - Simon/Suttles lead league in down year
Home runs were down slightly this year based on what they should have been, but things at the top were a lot lower than in real life, as Babe Ruth hit 47 in 1926, while we had Syl Simon and Mule Suttles leading with 22.
I've already talked about Suttles recently, but while Syl Simon has appeared on the leaderboards, I haven't talked about him much. Simon played in the majors for two seasons, and eleven years in the minors. Simon has an interesting story though, losing part of his palm and four of his fingers in an accident in a furniture factory, which earned his release from Milwaukee. But Simon came back to play in the minors, with a special bat and glove, both of which made it to Cooperstown. Here is some more information about Simon: TheDeadballEra.com :: Syl Simon's Obit Mel Ott also debuted this season, and we'll have four active players for the next 10 years until the next debut. That is if the Bambino can stay healthy, which I'm doubting as he missed time again with injury this season, and at 31 years old need to get busy if he is going to reach 500. 1927 - Jones back on top
Leroy Jones was back on top with 22 home runs, with only two players hitting 20 home runs. 1927 was when Ruth hit 60 and Gehrig hit 47, so the totals at the top are down, although totals overall are pretty good. If it keeps going like this nobody is going to hit 500 and this dynasty will be a bust. Dobie Moore is back on the career home run list, while Jack Clements and his 94 career home runs are off the list. 1928 - Jones blasts 42
Leroy Jones hit 42 home runs to lead the league for the second straight year, and the fourth time overall. Jones now has 184 career home runs, and is now the single season home run leader. I'm relieved someone put up a big number too. Gabby Hartnett made his debut on the career home run list, while Cristobal Torriente (101) and Jack Clements (94) both fell off the list. Louis Santop, the original 'Black Babe Ruth' retired in 19th place with 121 home runs. Santop played from 1909 to 1926 in the Negro Leagues for the Philadelphia Giants, New York Giants, Brooklyn Royal Giants, and Hilldale Daisies. Frank Brower retired with 117 home runs in 20th place. Brower hit 30 home runs in real life. 1929 - Jones' record setting year
Leroy Jones hit 48 home runs this season, setting a new single season record. Jones led the league for the third straight year, and passed the 200 home run mark. Babe Ruth continues to struggled with injuries, and was traded from the Yankees to the Senators, then following the season was traded to Brooklyn. At this point Ruth should get to 300, but I'd be surprised if he makes it to 400. Frank Brazill debuted on the career home run list, while Mike Tiernan and his 102 home runs dropped off. Brazill was a PCL star, who hit 254 career home runs. Yam Yaryan retired in second place on the career home runs list with 281 home runs, which of course was much better than his 2 career home runs, but did have success in the minors following his major league career. 1930 - Jones on top again
After just turning 30 years old, Leroy Jones finished the season with 46 home runs to again lead the league. Jones now has 278 career home runs, has 4 of the top 10 home run seasons, and has now moved up to 5th place on the all-time home run list. While Babe Ruth has disappointed, Leroy Jones has certainly stepped up. Ruth did have a nice comeback season in Brooklyn though, and his 31 home runs this year are a career high for Ruth, who will turn 36 before next season. Lou Gehrig was also traded this season, from the Phillies to St. Louis. His 26 home runs also reversed a downward trend. It's already feeling like Mel Ott has been in the league forever, but Ott is still just 21 years old and has shown steady improvement in each season. Two notable players made their debut this season, the Big Cat Johnny Mize, and Negro Leaguer Josh Gibson. We'll see how the two Hall of Famers do, and in the end see if Josh Gibson is the "Black Babe Ruth" or Babe Ruth turns out to be the "White Josh Gibson". Rogers Hornsby debuted on the career home run list, while Dobie Moore fell off the list again. With 112 home runs, Moore is still active, and could make a reappearance next year. 1931 - Injuries strike
1931 was an injury plagued year, with injuries striking Leroy Jones, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and others.
The season leader in home runs was down this year, with Mule Suttles leading the league with 32 homers. The 30 year old Suttles also moved up to second place on the all-time list and passed the 300 home run milestone. Suttles appears capable of overtaking the all-time home run lead. Babe Ruth also passed the 300 home run milestone this season, despite missing time with a serious of injuries. Both Al Simmons and Carr Smith debuted on the career home run lists, while Frank Brower (117) and Big Ed Delahanty (113) each fell off the leaders. Dan Boone retired with 153 career home runs. In real life Boone pitched in the majors and didn't hit a home run. 1932 - Greenberg/Suttles on top
21 year old Hank Greenberg tied Mule Suttles for the season lead with home runs with 26 apiece. The young Greenberg had his best season this year, while Suttles moved within 15 home runs of overtaking the all-time home run lead. Bud Davis retired with 195 career home runs this year, and I've talked about Davis before, but Davis finished with 253 minor league home runs. Mel Ott made his debut on the career home run leaders. One name missing this season is LeRoy Jones, who was injured in may and missed the rest of the season. Making his debut in the league is Joe DiMaggio, who hit 16 home runs as a 17 year old rookie. 1933 - Suttles ties career home run mark
With just 2 days left in the season Mule Suttles connected for career home run number 355 to tie Ed Breckenridge for first place on the all-time home run list. Suttles does need to continue to look over his shoulder, as Babe Ruth pulled within 8 with 20 home runs this season, and LeRoy Jones, who led the league with 24 homers this season is 28 behind. Frank Reiger retired with 244 career home runs, good for ninth on the all-time list upon his retirement. Frank Reiger was called the 'Babe Ruth of the Western Association' (seems like everyone was compared to Babe Ruth then…) Reiger hit 141 career home runs in the minor leagues, but was involved in a fatal car accident at the age of 27 years old. Hall of Famer Oscar Charleston also retired with 209 career home runs. Charleston was a Negro League star, and of course never got to play in the majors. Mickey Heath joined the career leaders, while both Gabby Hartnett and Louis Santop are off with 121 home runs. It definitely depends on the source. I've seen 129, and I've seen 237 as well -
Mule Suttles - BR Bullpen He definitely was one of the Negro League sluggers, and I've seen that either Suttles or Josh Gibson was the all-time home run leader for the Negro Leagues. |

April 20, 1934 - Suttles new home run king
Mule Suttles hit 129 home runs in the Negro Leagues, but got a chance to play in the majors and didn't disappoint. In today's game against the Brooklyn Dodgers went 3-5 and drove in 3 runs, connecting for career home run number 356 to overtake Ed Breckenridge for sole possession of first place on the all-time home run list. |

With 351 career home runs Babe Ruth retired from baseball today after suffering a torn labrum that effectively ended the 39 year old's career. Ruth hit 714 in his career, and while THIS injury can't be blamed for his poor results, the list of injuries in his career were both long and time consuming. Not only failing to live up to high expectations, but failing to hit 500 home runs, 400 home runs, or even finish atop the leader boards. There is no other way to put it other than Ruth's career is a big disappointment, and we now officially have our first failure. |

Oh no... well 351 home runs isn't bad, but for Ruth, it is.
Just wondering, do you use a minor league system for this? Last edited by mpejkrm; 08-18-2012 at 04:32 PM. |

I only use a reserve roster for this. I figure it's less games to sim to speed things up since I'll typically sim a year at a time. |

Do you have a minor league system now? You can switch to a reserve roster. I believe the best time to do it would be during the preseason. The one thing that will happen when you delete the minor league is all of the players will be dumped into free agency. I've gone ahead and temporarily increased the size of the active roster, moved all the players onto the active roster from the transaction screen, and then deleted the minor league when I've only had one level.

1934 - Suttles leads the league
Mule Suttles is now the all-time home run leader, and led the league once again with 39 home runs. Suttles is now just 6 home runs shy of becoming the first player with 400 career home runs. Suttles will turn 34 before next season begins, but should make a good run at 500 home runs. Jimmie Foxx made his debut on the career list with Mickey Heath falling off, but Heath is still an active player so he could reappear. Joe Hauser retires with 134 career home runs, and sits in 24th place currently. Hauser hit 80 home runs in real life.
