Agreed. I also would like to see the ability to split the "Signing and Releasing Players" function. I realize they are intertwined to some extent, but I like to spend my time looking for players (i.e signing) rather than evaluating the lower end of my organization (i.e. releasing). Just a thought.

This is a much needed addition. In my last MLB universe, Theo took over as a scout for another team after Boston let him go.

Somewhat related to this whole issue is the problem that if you decide that you want to be the on field manager of the team you still have an actual "manager" as part of your team personnel. I assume that the manager's traits still affect the team, which doesn't seem very fair. Besides, what manager would stick around while his GM is taking over in the dugout?

In order to manage the team on the field you should be required to name yourself manager of the team, on the team personnel screen. Right now (in 12) you can't do that at all, so it'd be a nice addition regardless.

I have always said the strength of OOTP is its customization - the way I like to play is different from the way you like to play, different from the other guy, etc

With that in mind - I believe as many have said here there are 4 roles

  1. Commissioner
  2. Owner
  3. GM
  4. Manager
to me the best way to handle this is not an either\or option but a check box option.

some may choose to check all 4 boxes in what I frequently refer to as "god mode" I have a league that I have been playing for over 100 game years, 10 real life years across every version of OOTP since v2 that I play in "god mode" I tinker and edit constantly to get things the way I think they should be - it is more of a sandbox game then a challenge game

some my choose to just be the owner - I personally would find that boring, but again the strength of the game is the burger king option - "have it your way"

I believe most would choose the GM+Manager - especially for those who play out every game (as I do in some of my leagues) I doubt there are many who want to play out every game, but don't also want to control who those players are. But for those that do - they should have that option

Bottom line - give us the option to mix and match what we want to control and you can never go wrong. I would also assume this might be easier to program since checking one of the 4 boxes would simply toggle on\off the options under that role's domain.

To be honest, I never really thought that this is a priority, but people seem to like it. So, remind me in 4 wekks again via PM, and I'll add it
Consider this as a reminder. This would be HUGE. I play two games. One as GM and I hire a manager and sim the games (but get the credit). The second, I play the games and am the GM/manager. I have to live with the 'you need a manager' on the home page. I've always wondered how the lack of a manager (and his traits) affected the player progression, but figured it made things harder.

I'm a systems integrator and know that some changes are easy and other changes require a base overhaul.

Like this game, always have. Good work!

Pretty much the way I play as well. I do all the GM stuff PLUS setting the lineups and rotation. I leave everything else in the dugout to the AI such as hit and run, steal, bunt, etc.

Since i apply for the GM job how can i be manager of the year, i hired a guy for manager he worked hard for that award.
I'd play as the owner only if i could, give me the same team control options and run real time mode all year long, but if possible let me set the AI to initate trades but i react and have final say

Yea, that's what I do, too. We're basically more even more controlling versions of Billy Beane. If Markus wanted to be more realistic he'd code things so the manager would quit on meddling GM/owners like us more frequently.

I really want this in the game. For a long time now, since the 2006 version, I have wanted this.

You and me both! The idea of making all the signings and all the trades and then having no control over who is in the starting lineup and the pitching rotation is such an awesome thought! One can dream that this will be in the final product. Gooooooooooooooooooooo Markus!!!

Why not player/managers?

In addition for us to be able to play multiple rows, I think the AI personnel should have the same ability. I think any type of personnel should have the ability to take on multiple rows. They can be anything from player to manager to GM to owner

Examples:
  1. Connie Mack as owner/GM/manager
  2. Frank Chance as player/manager
  3. Al Spaulding as owner/GM/manager/player
Heck even Kenny Williams was considering Paul Konerko as player/manager this year.

That would have been something. But then, Kenny's eventual choice for manager was still quite the shocker.

Markus,

This may be too late to consider but I have always felt like with OOTP11 that the career mode was never completely developed. Did not purchase OOTP12 so I can't comment on whether any improvements were made in that version regarding career mode. Working my way through the minors I have never been promoted to the Major League level although I have been promoted up minor league levels after sucessful seasons. Maybe in the career mode there should be some sucess as a field manager before being a full-fledged GM. I have always found frustration that as a minor league manager I can't make personel decisions regarding my staff nor make roster moves.

These are probably things that will have to wait for version 14 but I thought that I would mention them anyway. Looking forward to geting OOTP 13 on my computer.

I think this is how it should work, too. Bud Selig would have Commissioner and Owner checked. Guys like Bobby Cox, Gene Michael, Al Dark, and Jack McKeon spent time with the GM and Manager boxes both checked. I don't know if Charlie Finley was technically owner and GM, but I suppose there must have been guys who wore those two hats. Heck, John McGraw was even part owner and manager at the same time. Now, if those were added AND we could have the game recognize player/managers (without having to make separate entries), my head would spin with a dizzy joy!
