At one time, I believed Pete was getting screwed my the Hall, but now, I'm just sick of hearing about it. So he admits he gambled on baseball...big freaking surprise. Had he not gambled on baseball, he would have never agreed to be banned.

This is all about Pete being able to sign baseball cards/hats/etc. as "Pete Rose - Hall of Famer" and nothing else. If he is inducted to the Hall, you can bet that by 7:30 that night, he will be on QVC selling his Hall of Fame soul all over again.

Looks like he may be ready to admit he gambled.
If Pete Rose admits to gambling on his own team, screw letting him back in. The ban should be upheld, and no commissioner should even think of ever letting him back in.

Am I the only one who actually sees this?

If Pete Rose makes this admission of guilt, then he bet on his own team. If you bet on your own team, you are permanently banned from baseball. Therefore, if Pete Rose makes this admission of guilt, he should be permanently banned from baseball. QED.

This is tenth-grade stuff, kids. Simple logic. The fact that you admit to something doesn't erase the fact that you did it, and that you must take responsibility for the act, including serving the penalty assigned.

Suppose I go out and murder ten people. I am arrested and plead not guilty. Overwhelming evidence goes against me, and I am sentenced to life in prison without parole. After ten years or so, I decide to admit to what I did.

Now, do you think admitting to the murders will get a judge to overturn my conviction? Of course not.

So why the hell does everyone and their brother think "Oh, if he admits to gambling, he can come back?"

I would like to see the whole story what really happened. Does anybody have any proof that he did not bet against his own team?

So why does he get a lifetime ban but yet Denny McLain
was involved in gambling and was admitted back into
the league.
He got a lifetime ban for no other reason than he agreed to accept a lifetime ban.

I dont think he would have agreed to accept a lifetime ban, since he wants in the Hall so badly. I think there is something else that we the public do not know. Like him gambling against his own team, and the commisioner covering it up and he agreeing not to particiapate in MLB, as long as the truth never comes out about him betting against his own team!! Just my conspiracy

He did, though. However, at the time that he agreed to it, there was absolutely no formal declaration prohibiting lifetime-banned players from being voted into the HOF.

The HOF, as an independent entity, made that decision on its own and after Rose signed the lifetime ban agreement.

No kidding! You'd think a life-time ban for a dead man would have run it's course. Granted he took money, but Jackson was found innocent in court, and eventually by popular opinion...Let the man in.

Yes, he took gamblers money to throw the World Series. The frickin World Series! Whether or not he played to the best of his abilities during that series is questionable. Yes, his batting average was sterling, but that does not mean that he did not lay down. Hal Chase always had nice stats but was the biggest crook in baseball. It is impossible to prove or disprove that he took a dive and, frankly, it doesn't matter. He knowingly took money for the purpose of throwing a game. Period. That is more than enough for a ban for life. If you don't like that rule, change the rule.

Which is why it is a "permanent ban," not just "lifetime."

While that seems a tad simplistic of a response, I guess it will give me something to do this weekend.

I think the implication was clear. The rulebook clearly states that he should be permanently banned from the game. If you are unhappy with that, you are unhappy with the rule, not the fact that he was banned.

The court of popular opinion holds that not hustling is a more serious offense than gambling on baseball. Shudders!

but didnt ya just say betting on a baseball game is a one year suspension.
And betting on a game in which your team plays is permanent?

Im not gonna defend Rose but until it is proven or he signs a statement saying he betted on Reds games i have to go with the suspension.
I say, you say, they say doesnt work. There has to be a verdict.
The agreement he made in 1989 even states in it that he neither denies nor admitted betting on games.

It seemed to me that Rose's strategy was to avoid a decision, hence signing the agreement, while admitting no guilt, and being on the HOF sidelines the past 14 years. I hope there is a hearing, evidence brought forth, and the matter resolved once and for all.

No, I didn't say that, in reference to anything, ever. I was talking about Joe Jackson in that instance. What Joe Jackson did was far more serious than what Rose did.
