1885 British Open - Round 1

1st round
Bill Farnan defeats William Miller by 5th rd KO
Two Australians meet in our first bout and the master boxer Miller proves Farnan's equal, when he can stay on his feet. A hard right drops Miller in the 3rd, but Miller rallies to take the 4th with precision counter punching. Being outboxed in the 5th, Farnan lands a brutal combination that puts Miller to sleep for the 10 count.
John L Sullivan defeats Tom Hyer by 7th rd KO
The accepted game plan to beat Sullivan is start fast and get to the later rounds and Hyer did just that giving John L fits for the first two cantos. In the 3rd however Sullivan's power began to show and after 6 rounds Hyers left eye was swollen and cut. With 14 seconds left in round 7 a single brutal hook ended Hyers night.
George Godfrey defeats Yoshii Ogawa by 3rd rd KO
Ogawa was an unknown quanity, making the tournament on sheer power, but it was apparent early he posseses very little skill. Godfrey beat him to the punch consistently and dropped him with a hard right in the 3rd. Ogawa made it to his feet, but a single left hook put him down for good as Old Chocolate moves on.
Yankee Sullivan defeats Tom Allen by 15 rd decision 9 rds to 6
Given Sullivan's track record of less than exciting fights, not much was expected here, but to the crowds delight this one was action packed for most of the 15 rounds. Both men threw well over 1000 punches and while Allen was more consistent, Sullivan chose key spots to launch flurries, which won him the fight.
Mike Cleary defeats James Dalton by 10th rd TKO
James Dalton made a strong bid for the tournaments first big upset as he raced to an early 4 rounds to 1 lead, puffing up Cleary's face in the process. Cleary stayed the course however and as Dalton wore down, Cleary finally found his chin in the 10th putting him down. Once up Dalton was stopped, taking 19 unanswered blows.
Alf Greenfield defeats Joe Goss by 15 rd decision 7 rds to 6 (2 even)
Joe Goss is another whose energy usage during a fight can best be described as measured. Doing just enough to squeak out rounds proved costly against Greenfield, who stayed close and then exploded taking the final 3 rounds, including a knockdown in the 13th, to score the upset over Goss, who was roundly booed.
John J Dwyer defeats John Morrisey by 15 rd decision 8 rds to 5 (2 even)
Dwyer came out firing and paid for his wildness in the 2nd, tasting the canvas courtesy of a Morrisey right. Unfortunately this only seemed to spur Dwyer on as he boxed masterfully in the middle rounds building an insurmountable lead of 8 rounds to 3 heading into the 13th. From here he coasted home as Morrisey had no zip left.
Jake Kilrain defeats John Knifton by 13th rd disqualification
After easily taking the first 4 rounds against tournament first timer Knifton, Kilrain seemed to lose interest and the result was Knifton took 6 of the next 7 rounds and appeared headed for the upset before Kilrain woke up in the 12th. With the 13th going Jake's way, Knifton went low once too often and and was DQ'ed, still leading.

Some close calls for a couple of tournament regulars in the first round, especially Kilrain. As the championship rounds begin there are some great matchups in the upper half with Farnan/J.L Sullivan and Godfrey/Y Sullivan

1885 British Open - Championship rounds

Quarter-Finals
John L Sullivan defeats Bill Farnan by 1st rd KO
It was the second between these fighters with the first going to Sullivan via 1 round KO. Farnan vowed the results would be different this time and when he stunned Sullivan near the end of the 1st it appeared he may be right. But, in attempting to follow up, Farnan was caught with a single right cross and it was lights out.
George Godfrey defeats Yankee Sullivan by 5th rd TKO
After a dull first round, this contest soon turned into a boxing clinic by Godfrey, who looked sharp peppering Sullivan with jabs and combinations, opening up a horrific gash over his right eye in the 4th. Sullivan's corner worked feverishly to close the wound, but it was soon gushing blood early in the 5th prompting the stoppage.
Mike Cleary defeats Alf Greenfield by 15 rd decision 13 rds to 1 (1 even)
Greenfield was game and fought hard, but was no match for Cleary who picked him apart and staggered him throughout the fight, scoring a knockdown in the 8th. A warrior to the end, Greenfield survived and even managed to win the final round to achieve if nothing else a moral victory.
Jake Kilrain defeats Mike Cleary by 4th rd TKO
Things seemed to favor Cleary as he held a better record against common foes and a 10rd decision win in a previous meeting, but this was a different Jake Kilrain. Coming out fast Kilrain opend a huge gash in round 1 with a wicked left hook and continued to work on the cut. The bleeding became so bad there was no choice but to call it.
Semi-Finals
George Godfrey defeats John L Sullivan by 15 rd decision 8 rds to 7
A much anticpated first meeting between these two outstanding fighters and it was typical Sullivan, punishing Godfrey early and building a substantial lead though 10 rounds (7-3) before he once again ran out of gas. Sullivan's collapse allowed Godfrey to take the final 5 rounds and left him on the outside looking in once again.
Jake Kilrain defeats Mike Cleary by 13th rd TKO
A horrible break for Cleary who looked as good as ever in this bout, but whose forehead was split open in the 1st round. Though Cleary held the advantage (leading 8-3 at the time of the stoppage) his corner could not staunch the bleeding and Kilrain continued to work on the nasty cut eventually stealing the win.
Finals
Jake Kilrain defeats George Godfrey by 13th rd TKO
This bout plain and simple was a war, with both men covered in blood and their faces bruised and swollen, but once again Kilrain pulled victory from defeat. Trailing 8 rounds to 4, bloodied and needing a knockout to win, Kilrain once again unleashed his corkscrew hook, exploding Godfrey's left eye, with the fight stopped on the spot.

Jake KilrainGeorge Godfrey

Jake Kilrains metoric rise from journeyman to top tournament contender has captured to publics imagination and sparked rumors of doctoring his gloves, enabling him to slice his opponents faces to ribbons. The World Boxing Tour governing board has released a statement bebunking these rumors, insisting that all fighters gloves are inspected thoroughly before and after each match.

As for John L Sullivan, it appears that he may never reach his full potential as he continues to struggle with conditioning and is being questioned about his commitment to the sport.

Kilrain takes over the top spot off of his British open victory, while the rest of the top 5 are all solid contenders. There is a big dropoff developing after that as the world tour is small and the same mid level fighters continue to pick each off.

The future however looks bright as more and more fighters join the boxing game as youngsters across all major continents are taking up the sport.

OOC
One change I will be making is to allow fighters with losing records in the debut group to join the tour, as I do not want the top fighters knocking each over off during qualifying.
