16th of August with the MLB quick start
44-78 with the Pittsburgh Pirates Matt Diaz is going to retire after being hit by pitch at start of the season and having recurring problems from concussion. This game is awesome!!!!
I'm going to rip this team to shreds and will take this team all the way

Yeah, Pirates is always a fun game! It is a big challenge to rebuild the team but very fun. good luck!

61-101 season for the Pirates, totally expected not much you can achieve in the first season.

Baltimore win the ALCS 4-1 over Minnesota
Dodgers win the NLCS 4-1 over Padres

Dodgers win the world series 4-2 over Baltimore!!!!!

Vicente Padilla pitched game 1 of the world series after being traded earlier in the season from the Dodgers.

Jon Garland started for the Dodgers in game 1.

As a Dodger fan even I cant wrap my head around these results!!

In my MLB game (offseason following 2011 seasons), Pujols and Fielder both ended up in the NL West. Pujols signed a 80.8 mil/4 year deal with San Fran and Fielder signed a 107.3 mil/6 year deal with the Dodgers. If A-Gon signs with a NL West team, that would be nuts.

Led the Nationals to back-to-back World Series in 2015 and 2016 after a string of disappointing seasons. Finally got some cash for some big free agents, and Derek Norris and Bryce Harper finally started to show their abilities.

Unfortunately, right after the 2016 season, my owner gave me no money and I lost Stephen Strasburg. Was kind of pissed about that, so I resigned and joined Phoenix, who were just added to the game along with San Antonio. Had a huge budget for free agents and signed Strasburg to Phoenix. Went about .500 my first season but the second season has started well.

Expansion. Early in the game Arizona moved to Columbus, OH, but apparently Arizona decided they wanted a team back 5 years later.

Well, after several false-starts/mind-changes, I finally have a MLB fictional league. Started in 1980, and let the game do the historical updates through 2011. I turned off league evolution, and used the current league set-up and play-off rules through-out. I am so happy the game auto-adjust the modifiers since the patch (that is what screwed up my first tries). It saved me a lot of pain.

I also set up a 16 team AA independent league (which was a pain to get right, and still isn't exactly how I would like it). I set the financials on it not to change. I thought with a really low minimum salary and not much cash (ever shrinking away from the ML money every year), along with no arb., and one year for free agency, the league would be an alternative for players cut and released by the ML organizations. It would also give a shot for the minor league free agents to have an alternative to just giving up on baseball. I was hoping it would allow a few more players to develop and move into the majors (one of my favorite players, Kerry Ligtenberg had that career arch. He was picked by the Braves from an independent league for $720 worth of playing equipment). It hasn't exactly happened that way. It is mostly filled with ML bench players, with a couple of guys that would actually have a shot at being ML starters. Many teams spend half their player salaries or more on one player. So, there are shining stars, and a lot of scrubs. It is also a place for old guys that just refuse to stop playing, including some HOF'ers (which becomes important in a minute).

One other thing I did was in 1987 through 89, I put in 3 of my buddies and myself into the draft pool. A sharp fielding short-stop, with a little pop and an once in a century eye, a poor fielding RF with a huge power bat, a solid defensive/offensive catcher, and a speedy GG center fielder with a light bat. I also added a knuckle-baller named Phil Niekro because I like knuckleballers. My thought was that by the time I got to 2011 they'd all be retired and I'd make them my coaching staff.

Well, it was a pretty good plan going through. They all had stellar careers. The power hitter hit 72 hrs one season (still standing record), is second on the all-time list with 641 dingers, and won two MVP's . The catcher won 4 GG, and ended with 324 HR's. The CF holds the record for most steals, and had 2859 career hits. The knuckleballer won the most games at 320 games (but also the most losses at 269), has the CG, shutouts, innings, and K's, but also the most hits allowed and walks allowed. The SS holds the BB career record by a huge margin, won 9 GG, and one MVP. He holds the ML record in games played, ab's, hits, runs and total bases. Interestingly enough, they all played their whole major league career with the teams that drafted them, except for a four year stint toward the end of Phil's career (he went to Atlanta) and then returned to his original team for his final two years (SF).

By 2010, all but Phil and the SS had retired. Phil still had one more year on his final contract. And the SS, after all he had achieved in his 22 years with the Los Angeles Angels, just wouldn't hang them up. He had moved to third, then second as his defensive skills deteriorated. By the end of that season, had even lost the ability to rate a position! But instead of retiring, he signed a two year deal with the Staten Island Silverbacks, in the East Coast League (my AA independent league) for $400,000+ a year. I thought, "well, he has one more year and either he'll retire or I'll retire him and pick a team."

My original plan was to back-up the league, and then create a new save. I'd pick the worst major league team, play with them. Then maybe later restart and try one of the independent league teams. Well, the fact that 2011 rolled around, and Mr. SS refused to retire on his own changed my plans. The silly guy (playing only DH) played every game his first season. His stats where .253/.481/.355. He walked 232 times! His ratings were all brown, except his eye, which was still a freekin' 20. Instead, I took over the Staten Island team and let him play out his last year on the contract. I hit him first (with that crazy OBP), and every guy behind him ended up having a career year. He ended that season at .211/.462/.270, with another 236 walks. *snort* We won the championship without him missing a single start.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread or not. If not, I apologize. I want to buy the game, but the only thing holding me back is hearing from some people that players aren't asking for enough money as free agents (Pujols, Fielder, etc.). Is this true, and if so, is there a way around it? Thanks.

I'll answer your question anyways, the problem with FA not getting enough money was fixed in a patch so you should be ok.

I'm pumping a heap of money into player development and some of my young prospects are starting to come on. Also signed McCutchen early to a 6 year deal worth only 5 million a season. I think next season the team should be around .500

At the start of May I am 13-15 as the Pirates. Not a bad start to my Pirates game.

Started with the MLB quickstart with OOTP 11 and released all the players and did a redraft with me as the Cardinals.

Of course I picked first and picked Albert Pujols.

I'm entering my 6th season and have only been to the playoffs one time, in 2013 where we lost in the NLCS.

The thing that I find interesting is I have the highest payroll and really have struggled winning - although this year I stand to lost millions if I don't make the playoffs and go far.

I usually play with my favorite team first and then after winning a WS, I will take the worst team in the league's history - which btw right now is the Chicago Cubs.

We are off to a 4-0 start this season, so maybe this is our year!

Ah ha! Here you are mate. Good to see you. I hope you are enjoying this game as much as I am. I started MLB 2011 with the Astros. Yes, I am a masochist.


2011 Astros progress:

I sent Nelson Figueroa through waivers (he cleared) and signed Carlos Torres to be the fifth starter. Torres went to Japan this season in real life. Figueroa accepted the assignment to Oklahoma City (AAA).

I also signed 1B/OF Micah Hoffpauir to a minor league contract with a 30-day ML option. He will be called up as soon as a I can clear a spot. Hoffpauir is also in Japan this season in real life. He will be a good left-handed bat off the bench and could push Wallace a little.

I am trying to dump 2B Bill Hall's contract for a prospect. The Phillies should be interested with the injury to Utley. I am close to a deal that would send Hall and $500K to PHI for SP Perci Garner. The Phillies are asking for a prospect in the deal from my side, and I won't do that (yet).

Scout Bobby Heck has already uncovered two top international pitching prospects, so my decision to up that budget is paying off.

I signed several bargain free agents, including MR Brad Kilby (L) who has replaced Fernando Abad (sent to AAA) as the lefty specialist. I had to sneak a few players through waivers to clear room on the 40-man roster, and I lost MR Sammy Gervacio to Washington making room for Kilby.

The team on the field is true to form. We were just swept at home by the Marlins and are now 3-6 on the season. To add injury to insult, Michael Bourn came up lame while running the bases. The injury is not yet diagnosed. I am holding my breath.
