Having to beat five teams to win the division is unfair when everyone else only has to beat four (or three) teams.

But if we're taking a long term view, you have to admit that the Pirates have sucked for the last 20 years and basically haven't really been trying. So realistically, you've only been competing with 4 other teams just like (almost) everyone else. And plus, being in the NL Central means you get to play the Pirates a bunch of times a year, so when you look at that way, it may actual be an advantage (this year notwithstanding).

Having said that, kudos to the Pirates for turning things around this year. Hopefully they can keep it up and make a push for the playoffs.
