CLEVELAND INDIANS

Overall (8721-8384 W-L, 1901 - 2011) - 2 World Championships, 5 Pennants, and 10 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park - Cleveland Stadium

Manager: Al Lopez

CSandy AlomarRay Fosse
1BJim ThomeHal Trosky
2BNap LajoieBobby Avila
3BJoe SewellAl Rosen
SSLou BoudreauOmar Vizquel
OFAlbert BelleDale Mitchell
OFEarl AverillKenny Lofton
OFLarry DobyRocky Colavito
DHManny Ramirez
SPBob Feller
SPBob Lemon

SPCC Sabathia
CLBob WickmanDoug Jones

Catchers - When Ray Fosse was injured in the 1970 All star game the potential of a great career was passed. Fosse was quite a catcher before then however and now has his chance to play again. Fosse will battle with Sandy Alomar for the everyday job, Fosse has the potential and Alomar has the consistency.

First Base - There is nothing but power from this spot. Jim Thome has about 600 home runs and the perfect power uppercut swing that makes him a great midlineup slugger. Hal Trosky isnt much of a drop off as the back up and will surely be needed as Thome likely cant play everyday. The glove at this spot is good but range not great.

Second Base - When you have an entire team named after you then you must be pretty good. Nap Lajoie is a legend of the game and a superstar with the bat in his hands. Lajoie managed for a while and is the first true star of Cleveland baseball; look for a .330 average from him. Bobby Avila backs up the star and is a hardnosed perfect backup at that. Avila can hit for average and can stretch a double into a triple.

Short Stop - Maybe the best and most horored player the franchise has seen, Lou Boudreau will at the center of it all at the short stop position. Lou is a manger on the field and can handle the bat with the best of them. Boudreau is a great man to have on the roster during those especially tough games in the AL. The backup is none other then Omar Vizquel. Vizquel may be the best fielding shortstop the game has seen, and if not spactacular at the plate he does have good speed and can swipe a base.

Third Base - For a short period Al Rosen was tearing up the American League and almost had a triple crown in 1952. Rosen had prodidious power and drives the ball to all parts of the field. Rosen could be a secret key to this team. Joe Sewell is a Hall of Famer and likely will be converted to third base to compete for this job. Sewell is a doubles machine with good speed. Stil Sewell is known best for being the best contact hitter to ever play the game. Sewell averaged around eight strikeout a season!

Outfield - Larry Doby is another high charcater guy who has a history beyond his performance on the field. Still Doby was a great Hall of Fame hitter for a long time who could do it all including 215 home runs and a dependable glove and arm. Albert Belle will play in left field and when Belle is hot little can stop him. Belle mashes the ball and kills mistakes, some however question his glove and his impact as a team player. Finally Earl Averill is the most unsung star in this lineup but in many ways may be the most impressive. Averill hit over 200 homers, 400 doubles, and 100 triples with a .318 career average. Kenny Lofton will surely see some time and is a great runing backup. Rocky Colavito has great power and will be a dangerous pinch hitter on this team. Dale Mitchell will also fight to make this final 25 man roster.

Designated Hitter - Manny Ramirez is the DH who has over 500 home runs and a great history of winning. Ramirez has a good plate eye and hits line drives like rain drops. Ramirez wont field much but can play left, Lofton and Colavito will see time in this roles as well.

Starting Pitching - A deep solid rotation will have the Indians contending all year long. Bob Feller is not only a great man in all walks of life but is among the best pitchers to ever throw. Feller won 20 or more games almost everyseason and is the leader and ace here. Bob Lemon is another star arm from the era and his ability with Feller to throw hard will keep hitters on their heels. Early Wynn approaches the hitter a little diffrently but is just as hard to hit, Wynn won 300 games in his career and lead the Indians to their last title. CC Sabathia rounds off the roatation and the big left hander throws hard as well and takes the ball with fire and enthusiasm. These four arms have the fans in Cleveland thinking they are good enough for anything. Rumor also has it that Satchail Paige will make the roster and could be an open outside option for some pitching time.

Closer - A battle here between two good but not great closers, actually maybe three. Bob Wickman has the most saves of the bunch but Doug Jones likely was more dependable. Jose Mesa also will have his chance as this role is wide open heading into the spring.

Spring Training battles

Bob Wickman vs Jose Mesa vs Doug Jones (closer)
Al Rosen vs Je Sewell (Third base)

Quick word with Al Lopez
"Me and Lou (Boudreau) will work together in managing this team. Lou is too smart a baseball man not to be part of decisions."

CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Chicago White Sox (8652-8441 W-L, 1901 - 2011) - 3 World Championships, 6 Pennants, and 9 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park - Comiskey Park

Manager: Tony Larussa

CRay SchalkSherm Lollar
1BPaul KonerkoBil Skoworn
2BEddie CollinsNellie Fox
3BLuke ApplingRobin Ventura
SSLuis AparicioOzzie Guillen
OFHarold BainesJermaine Dye
OFJoe JacksonHappy Felsh
OFMinnie MinosoMagglio Ordonez
DHFrank Thomas
SPEd Walsh
SPMark Buerhle
SPTed Lyons
SPJack McDowellTommy John
CLBobby Jenks

Catchers - One of the best defensive catchers ever to play is Sherm Lollar. Lollar doesnt hit that much but will be used often in a platoon role to help the staff. The other man will be Ray Schalk who is a competent hitter and also experianced. The Sox may not have the best offense from this position, but thats not what they need here. Look for Lollar to get more of the innings.

First Base - Paulie Konerko will start in this spot. Konerko is one of the most dependable and consistent Sox players in history. Konerko is also loved by the fans and will surely drive in runs and use the short dimensions of Comiskey Park to his favor. Paulie can also pick it at first. Bill Skoworn couldnt quite make the Yankee roster so he will get his chance with the Sox where he did make an all star team. Skoworn can also play third and has home run power. Frank Thomas can obviously be used here too.

Second Base - Two greats at this position but only room for one to play. Eddie Collins is the first choice and a true talent and example of consistency. Collins is likely to bat somewhere around .320 and score a ton of runs. Nellie Fox is the backup and Fox has a great glove as well as a consistent bat. Fox surely will play more then the usual backup and truly deserves a prominant role on this team even if he doesnt start.

Third Base - The hot corner will be manned by two very good talents. Luke Appling has the upper hand going in as his bat and average are too good to keep out. Appling will be tested by Robin Ventura who is an excellent fielder and if he plays will make the Sox one of the best defensive infields. Either way Chicago can feel good about their depth in alot of these positions as a long seaason is sure to need multiple contributors.

Short Stop - Luis Aparicio is a slick fielding sensation that cant be forgotten after you see him play. Aparicio is a star turning the double play and has range that is hard to match. Luis is a smart hitter who wont hurt you but can get on base with consistency. It looks like Ozzie Guillen will be another backup, Guillen of course is a great clubhouse player and carries a decent glove. Ozzie will keep things loose on this team that does have a Latin feel to it.

Outfield - The legend of Shoeless Joe Jackson is as anticipated as anyone in the Cooperstown League. Jackson by so many has been described as a rare geniius at the plate who can flirt with .350. Harold Baines will man right field and lead the Sox for a long time in the 80's and 90's. Baines consistenly can hit over 30 homers in a year and drive in over 100 runs. Minnie Minoso is slated to take the left field job for the time being but will be tested by Magglio Ordonez who will want some starts. Both men are similar hitters and need to prove they deserve to play in this lineup. Happy Felsh is another star from the Black Sox team that is looking for a second chance. Jermaine Dye is also on this roster and was part of the rescent Sox championship run.

Designated Hitter - Frank Thomas is the heart of the White Sox lineup and one of the best overall hitters the game has ever seen. Thomas has over 500 home runs and an onbase percentage and batters eye that are second to none. Thomas is so good he alone could change the White Sox fortunes.

Starting Pitching - Many choices here but the Sox are going with their best. Ed Walsh will be the ace and has a season where he won over 40 games on his resume. Walsh will need to show he can dominate beyond his era. Mark Buerhle has to be on any Sox team. Buerhle is a winner and if not oevrpowering still gets it done and fields his position well. Ted Lyons is often overlooked in Sox history but had quite a career. Lyons eats up innings and can challange all batters peppering the strike zone and finding ways to win. The final spot will be contested by three men; Black Jack McDowell gets his shot after a good run in the 90's while Tommy John looks to make a rotation after his long and impressive career. Finally Eddie Cicotte may get his chance as well although he is an outsider here.

Closer - Bobby Jenks will bring the hard stuff and get the shot at closing out games. The Sox will battle with Cleveland for the division and the bullpen's of both teams will be key. Bobby Thigpen has also been talked about in this role.

DETROIT TIGERS

Detroit Tigers (8670-8461 W-L, 1901 - 2011) - 4 World Championships, 10 Pennants, and 12 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park - Tiger Stadium

Manager: Jim Leyland

CLance ParrishBill Freehan
1BHank GreenbergNorm Cash
2BCharlie GehringerLou Whitaker
3BMiguel CabreraGeorge Kell
SSAllan TrammelHarvey Kuenn
OFTy CobbSam Crawford
OFAl Kaline
OFKirk GibsonDarrell Evans
DHHarry HeilmanCecil Fielder
SPDenny McLain
SPHal Newhouser
SPMickey Lolich
SPJack MorrisJim Bunning
CLWillie Hernandez

Catchers - Both these guys know how to win and put the team first. Lance Parrish has the inside track on the starting job due to his power and offensive advatage. The other star is Bill Freehan who has 200 home runs of his own and has caught the most games in team history. The job will be determined this spring but both men will play a part this year and the position shouldnt be a problem for Jim Leyland and his staff.

First Base - Hank Greenberg is a class act all around but his play on the field will always be remembered by Tiger fans. Greenberg will be the power source in this lineup and will likely have a ton of hitters on ahead of him. Norm Cash will look for atbats where he can get them since his bat is too good to keep out. Cash has power as well and brings a competent glove to the position.

Second Base - Hall of Famer Charlie Gehringer is an outstanding all around player who will likely bat at the top of the lineup and set the table for this team. Gehringer is a patient hitter who can lay down the bunt and keep his average up or near .320. Sweet Lou Whitaker will be the backup and will be a nice option as a pinch hitter to go to late when those tight games need a spark.

Short Stop - The Tigers are happy to have the talents of Alan Trammel at the position of short. Trammel is the stamp of consistency and makes the most of his smarts and heart to help his team; Trammel is just the kind of player you are happy to have on your team. Harvey Kuenn will be a utility man on this roster and is another smart por man's Trammel.

Third Base - Two stars lie in wait at third base. The Tigers will move Miguel Cabrera to the position and will sacrafice some defense to keep the impressive bat in the lineup. Cabrera can hit with anyone and will be placed in the middle of the lineup. George Kell may be seen as a defensive replacement but Kell is a solid hitter in his own right and some say he should be the outright starter. In any event the Tigers will get production out of this position.

Outfield - Even though he was despised by many, few can argue that Ty Cobb was likely the best player to have played the game. Cobb brings it all to this team and can take a game over with his style and baseball IQ. Cobb is the favorite to win the batting title and has the highest lifetime average in history. Al Kaline is likely more beloved then almost any Tiger and his consistent play will maybe be overlooked on this team, but not by his coaches ir teamates. The final outfield spot is expected to be filled by Kirk Gibson. Gibby doesnt have the stats that others do but maybe no player plays bigger at the right time. Gibson is said to be a great fit with Cobb and will help the Tigers play a certain hard nosed type of game. Sam Crawford will test Gibson for the position as Crawford is from another era but has Hall of Fame credentials. Darrell Evans can play third or the outfield and had some great years in Detroit.

Designated Hitter - Anyway you look at it Harry Heilman will be in this lineup. Heilman has outstanding numbers including over 540 doubles and truly may be one of the most underated stars in the history of the game. He can also fill in the outfield spots and Kell or Cash can also play here. Cecil Fielder was also in consideration for this spot but likely wont make the roster.

Starting Pitching - Denny McLain is the ace and pitched in an era when pitching dominated baseball. McLain was a 30 game winner and lead the Tigers to a title. Hal Newhouser knows something about winning as well and will take the ball and go deep into games everytime. Mickey Lolich was a part of the Tiger rotation for more then a decade and allows this rotation to boast an impressive top three. The final spot in the rotation should belong to the true grit of Jack Morris. Morris may not have the best numbers in the world, but anyone who knows him loves him as a teamate and competitor. If Morris struggles Jim Bunning is ready to step right in.

Closer - The search for a closer is not an easy one for the Tigers as the bullpen as a whole isnt great. Willie Hernandez has a Cy Young to his name and will get the look as the man. Hernandez can go more then one inning if needed.

Spring Training Battles
Miguel Cabrera vs George Kell (Third base)
Kirk Gibson vs Sam Crawford (Outfield)

Cooperstown Rating
Offense - A-
Defense - C
Starting pitching - B+
Bullpen - D
Prediction - 81-81

Quick word with Jim Leyland
"You dont have to worry about Cobb. He wants to win more then anyone."

MINNESOTA TWINS

Minnesota Twins (4025-3985 W-L, 1961 - 2011) - 2 World Championships, 3 Pennants, and 11 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Target Field

Manager: Tom Kelly

CJoe MauerEarl Battery
1BJustin MorneauKent Hrbeck
2BRod CarewChuck Knoblauch
3BHarmen KillebrewGary Gaetti
SSZoillo VersallesRoy Smalley
OFTony OlivaChilli Davis
OFKirby PuckettTom Brunansky
OFTori HunterMatt Lawton
DHBob Allison
SPBert Blyleven
SPJim Kaat
SPJohan Santana
SPFrank Viola
CLRick Aguilera

Catchers - The overall talents of Joe Mauer are welcomed as the young star is expected to be a big part of this team. Mauer when healthy is as good a hitter as the position has seen in decades and will give the Twins an edge. Earl Battery is the backup and a solid one at that, Battery is a winner who handles this position well, still the Twins hope they dont see too much of him especially if it means a Mauer injury.

First Base - An open battle here between two popular Twins. Jason Morneau of course has an MVP to his name and an outstanding all around game. Kent Hrbeck is the other slugger in the equation and although Hrbeck may not have the same amount of talent that Morneau has, he was able to win the big one and that says alot. Both will battle for the position this spring but either way both will get time on the field.

Second Base - Few batters were as sharp and as polished as Rod Carew and the Twins are happy he is part of their side. Carew is an excellent hitter and will have more responsibility to drive in runs on a team that may not be as deep as others. Carew is just an awesome baseball player. Chuck Knoblauch is an enigma as the backup who had an up and down career but with less pressure off the bench, he should be able to relax and play well in a limited role.

Short Stop - Finding a star at this spot just isnt in the history for this team. The Twins look for an adequete man and it will be Cuban Zoilo Versalles. Zoro as they call him actually won an MVP in 1965 and is a confident player although staying consistent is a challange. Versalles is an exciting player who will impress or frustrate. Roy Smalley is much more reserved but still has alot of experiance at the position and was one of the bright spots during the Twins lean years in the early 80's.

Third Base - The big bat and focus will all be at 3rd base. The killer Harmen Killerbrew is the slugger who will be the main focus of the offense and is to many the best hitter in Twins history. Killebrew feasts on fastballs and his power is a thing of legend. Gary Gaetti will back up the killer and Gaetti can hit the ball a long way in his own right. The gloves however may not be the best at the hot corner.

Outfield - Kirby Puckett is the other big star of this team and his all around game will be sorely needed. At his best Puckett hits for power and average and plays a flawless centerfield, one would have a heck of a time finding a flaw in his game. Tony Oliva is another excellent bat in the lineup and a tough out. Oliva has played in big games before and isnt listening to the critics who feel the Twins are not talented enough. Bobby Allison is the final piece to the outfield puzzle and was a star in the early Twins days. Allison is a class act and a player that also can be depended on in almost all aspects. Torii Hunter is an excellent fielder and teamate that will help matters. Tom Brunansky is a feast or famine hitter with a bunch of power from the right side and finally Matt Lawton is a fringe roseter player.

Desgnated Hitter - Chilli Davis is suppose to fit in here and provide some pucnh from this spot. Davis can hit the ball a long way but keeping his average at a respectable level will be key. Allison could also play here with Torri Hunter getting time in the field.

Starting Pitching - A great deal of this team's success will depend on its starting pitching. Bert Blyleven gets to prove to the world that he deserves to be an ace and can win the big one. One thing Bert can do is strike out a bunch of men. Johan Santana is a flash of talent that will be fun to watch. Santana needs to stay healthy and have his brilliant curve at its best. Jim Kaat has the guile and know how of a winner and he will get his chance to make a diffrence although some worry about his chances. Finally, Frank Viola will likely round off the staff and for a while was dominant on the mound and led the Twins to a championship. Brad Radke was a borderline addition here.

Closer - Rick Aguilera may have not been the most dominant of closers but he will get the chance to do it. He needs to keep the ball down and use his pinpoint control to get the job done. If Aguilera struggles, Joe Nathan is on the roster as well to get his chance.

Spring Training Battles
Kent Hrbeck vs Jason Morneau (1st base)
Chili Davis vs Torri Hunter (DH)

OAKLAND ATHLETICS

Overall (8296-8779 W-L, 1901 - 2011) - 9 World Championships, 15 Pennants, and 23 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park - Oakland Atletics Stadium

Manager: Connie Mack

CMickey CochraneTerry Steinbach
1BJimmie FoxxJason Giambi
2BDavey LopesJimmy Dykes
3BHome Run BakerEric Chavez
SSBurt CampeneriaMiguel Tejada
OFRickey HendersonJose Cansesco
OFAl SimmonsBob Johnson
OFReggie JacksonJoe Rudi
DHMark McGwire
SPLefty Grove
SPCatfish Hunter
SPVida Blue
SPDave StewartChief Bender
CLDennis Eckersley

Catchers - A great personality and a great ballplayer Mickey Cochrane is the perfect man for the catching job on this team. Cochrane can also hit with the best of them and the Hall of Famer will remind this team how to win. Terry Steinbach is a great backup who can swing the bat in a pinch as well. Steinbach's best attribute though is his work behind the plate and calling a game.

First Base - The great Jimmy Foxx may have been the most intimidating force the game has ever seen. Foxx was full of muscles and had to bat speed to match as well. His power makes this team more dangerous then most and Foxx will drive in a ton of runs. Jason Giambi is also part of the mix had an MVP career in Oakland. Giambi is a strong pull hitter and takes a number of pitches. Mark McGwire is also in the mix here but the position belongs to Foxx.

Second Base - Not the strongest spot for the franchise and Davey Lopes will likley be the everyday man. Lopes is a great baserunner and finds a way to get on base, look for Lopes to bat 9th and along with Rickey Henderson, add another great running threat. Jimmy Dykes is the utility backup for this team and is needed more for his good glove then anything else.

Short Stop - Bert Campenaris is a winner and a fighter that anyteam is happy to have. He will be the anchor of the infield and is sure to get on his mates if they dont give their all. Campy isnt the best hitter in the world but is smart and will anticipate mistakes well. Miguel Tejada is also a major factor here as Tejada has a great arm and glove at the position and a huge bat when needed. Tejada when he was at his best was something special and this position could get interesting as Mack will have to decide what style of the two to play more.

Third Base - Although his name says otherwise, Home Run Baker is far from a true long ball threat in this league but the Hall of Famer is still the man for the job at the hot corner. Baker is a hard nosed player who plays oldstyle baseball, something the A's are going to neeed. Eric Chavez is the backup and has a gold glove as well as some decent power from the left side; Chavez needs to stay healthy however.

Outfield - Things are as good as it gets for this outfield. Rickey Henderson is the best leadoff man and baserunner in league history and will make his claim for the stolen base crown. Henderson can also do so much more and will surely score a ton of runs. Al Simmons has an incredible bat and will likely bat over .320 while driving in a ton of runs. Simmons is one of those players that can take the league over from nowhere when few expect him to. Finally Reggie Jackson is not only a legendary home run power hitter but also a clutch hitter and the A's will be counting on that. Jackson is also larger then life star and will have a lot to say about his team's chances and performance. Jose Cansesco will look for atbats as well and is the first option off the bench. Bob Johnson is a nice Connie Mack type of player and Joe Rudi rounds off the roster as a winner and another fiesty player.

Designated Hitter - The lineup will have Foxx, McGwire, and Jackson which provides power like no other. McGwire will get his shot as the DH and should see some great pitches to hit with the help around him.

Starting Pitching - There could be made an argument that Lefy Grove was one of the greatest pitchers to take the mound. Grove was a single force in baseball during his era and just couldnt be hit by some of the best to play th game, he is the true ace of this team. Catfish Hunter is a Hall of Fame second man and has all the grit to win and compete. Hunter has an array of pitches and is fun to watch pitch. Vida Blue has also been part of great A's teams and Blue throws hard and takes the ball without hesitation. Dave Stewart rounds off a great staff as Stewart challanges all hitters and feels like he and his team should and will win everytime he takes the mound. Chief Bender, the old time Connie Mack man, is also there to fill in as a spot starter.

Closer - With pinpoint control and a cool demenour Dennis Eckersley will be the closer that the A's go to and that everyother team would love to have. The Hall of Famer uses his spitfinger pitch with ease and makes his skill look so easy. The bullpen like everything else on this team is filled with stars and characters.

Spring Training Battles
Mark McGwire vs Jose Cansesco (DH)
Bert Campenaris vs Miguel Tejada (Third Base)

Cooperstown Rating
Offense - A
Defense - C+
Starting Pitching - A-
Closer - A+
Prediction: 100-62

SEATTLE MARINERS

Seattle Mariners (2548-2886 W-L, 1977 - 2011) - 4 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park - Safeco Field

Manager: Lou Piniella

CKenji JohjimaDan Wilson
1BTino MartinezAlvin Davis
2BHarold ReynoldsBrett Boone
3BAdrien BeltreJim Presley
SSAlex RodriguezCarlos Guillen
OFJay BuhnerRaul Ibanez
OFKen Griffey JrPhil Bradley
OFIchiro SuzukiDave Henderson
DHEdgar Martinez
SPRandy Johnson
SPGaylord Perry
SPFelix Hernandez
SPJamie MoyerMark Langston
CLKazuhiro Sasaki

Catchers - The Mariners will do the best that they can with the short history and the catcher position is a challange. Kenji Johjima will hold the position down with some compitence and is agile and good behind the plate. His bat isnt great ar this level but much wont be expected from him. Dan Wilson will back things up and will be even more overmatched at the plate but surely wont try and do too much.

First Base - An open battle at first base between two good but not great players. Tino Martinez knows how to win and can at times provide strength and power one would want from the position. Tino is a beloved teamate and a good fit on any team. Alvin Davis is a similar type of hitter but without the winning resume. Davis can be overmatched but will batter a bad pitch.

Second Base - Much like catcher not a world of talent here at second base. It comes down to what the team needs and Harold Reynolds is the closest thing to a speed player the Mariners have other then Ichiro. Brett Boone had a year like no other for the team in 2001 but did little else after that. Boone is more a power man and will compete for playing time, still most expect Reynolds to play more as he is a better all around option.

Short Stop - Alex Rodriguez and the short stop position is where this team begins to show its muscle. ARod is as good or better then the position has ever seen and his bat and numbers can stack up with anyone in the history of the game. Rodriguez really has no weaknesses and is primed to lead this team to more wins then many think. Carlos Guillen is simply a competent backup and his slick glove will be a nice tool to have.

Third Base - A few options here for Piniella but the bat of Adrien Beltre should win out. Beltre also has a gold glove for the position but his bat and its power will help balance this offense. Beltre seems to play well when he isnt the main cog on a team, so this spot fits him well. Jim Presley wore the Mariners shirt for a while and gives 110% everytime out. He may see more time then expected if Beltre slumps.

Outfeild - Two megastars in the outfield make the Mariners one of the most exciting teams around. Ken Griffey Jr of course is the smoothest ccenterfielder anyone has seen and has to be among the top five to ever play. Junior will have every chance to prove his excellence. Ichiro is the leadoff man and will be on base more then anyone. Ichiro is a hit machine who can run and his arm and range in right make he and Griffey a tandem to fear in the gaps. Jay Buhner is the left fielder, and is an obvious dropoff. Still Buhner has good power with a number of years over 40 home runs, he is also a team first guy who wont whine or quit. Dave Henderson is a clutch bat that seems to come up big at the right time. Raul Ibanez has a sweet stroke and can get hot in a hurry. Finally Phil Bradley will fight for a roster spot on this team over Mike Cameron and his fine glove.

Designated Hitter - Edgar Martinez bears down on pitchers in an intense way and will add strength to this Mariners team. Edgar is a class act who carries a big bat and is a Mariner through and through. With Martinez and his bat, the Mariners actually have a very deceptive and strong lineup.

Starting Pitching - There is reason to be optimistic here as well. Randy Johnson is the ace of the staff and has the kind of stuff hitters hate to face. Johnson is a strikeout specialist and Felix Hernandez fits in well under the same theme. King Felix may be young but his stuff is as good as it gets and hitters who face these two back to back will see nothing but heat and fire. Gaylord Perry takes a diffrent approach but is a true pitcher who uses everything he can to win. Perry isnt the fancy type with his stocky figuire and array of pitches, but results are all that matter. The final spot for the time being belongs to Mark Langston. Langston is a left hander with a number of good pitches that keeps his team in games. Jamie Moyer is another option here and will push Langston for a spot or chance to start.

Closer - Kuzuhiro Sasaki has been a dominant closer not only here but over in Japan. Sasaki has a split finger pitch that gets him out of trouble and a stone faced confidence that every closer needs. The Mariners are resting alot on the Japanese closer as he is the best they have here; Norm Charlton is a possible emergency closer.

Spring Training battles
Tino Martinez vs Alvin Davis (1st base)
Mark Langston vs Jaimie Moyer (Rotation)

Cooperstown Rating

Prediction: 84-78

Quick word with Lou Piniella
"This team and lineup are going to scare alot of people. We have a chance to make a run in this division and that we will do. Baseball is a game no one can predict."

Catchers - A good fit here for the Angels who need as much talent at each position as they can get. Bob Boone handles a staff better then most and seems to drive in big runs when needed; Boone is another coach on the field. Brian Downing can fill in at a number of positions and has a big bat, still he is officially listed as the backup catcher.

First Base - Wonder kid Wally Joyner will try and bring some of the magic back that he showed in his first few seasons. Joyner is a good fielder and does better when not under pressure. JT Snow is a similar player who fields just about as well as anyone can saving numerous errors and runs. The Angels in any event really lack the muscle that they need from this position in comparison with other teams.

Second Base - Bobby Grich just loves to play baseball and is a hard nosed devil that will help this team fight even when they are overmatched. Grich is a fine fielder with good range while his bat has double written all over it. Jerry Remy hasnt been forgotten by the fans he played for and found a place on this team. Remy is an outstanding fielder who will help a very good defensive baseball team.

Short Stop - Jim Fergosi is one of the few men to have his jersey retired by the Angels and is the main man at short stop for the team. Fergosi has some power in his swing and is one of the smartest players one team can hope for, he should have a good combination with Grich. David Eckstein has to be on any Angels roster as his hustle and energy on the field and the bases have become a thing of legend in these parts.

Third Base - Troy Glaus swings hard and can get hot in a hurry. Glaus could also see some time as DH but in this lineup his power is deeply important. Glaus also needs to stay healthy and support the other big bats around him. Doug DeCinces is a good utility man to have in the backround and may be stretched to play more then one infield position.

Outfield - The srtength of the team is here. Vladimir Guerrero will be in right field and his free swinging style brings in a ton of runs and good results. Vlad is also a great fielder with a rocket arm that runners should fear. Jim Edmonds in center is fun to watch and has crazy range to cut down the long flies. Edmonds can also provide some kick at the plate from the left side. Bobby Bonds is one of the best all around players the game has seen, and much like his son, could take a game over and help his team win the close ones. Bonds could run well and field his position expertly. Mr. Angel Tim Salmon is part of the mix and will get some time at DH or first off the bench in a pinch. Don Baylor is also another great option to send into the fray while Gary Pettis is the main option for speed on this roster. A great outfield group through and through.

Designated Hitter - The position could be filled by many but Garret Anderson is the first option. Anderson just does his job as well as anyone and is a profrsional hitter that doesnt miss many RBI chances. A host of others can play in this roles and Mike Scioscia will need to work that out.

Starting Pitching - A group that has to work as a unit to be successful. Chuck Finley will take the ball in the big games and has pitched more years in an Angel uniform then anyone, the respect is there and Finley will ake life hard on hitters. Frank Tanana will bring his "junk" to the mound and stay on hitters. Tanana studies hitters well and is the kind of fighter that Mike Scioscia likes. John Lackey is a winner and will try and remain so on a team that cant afford to allow a bunch of runs. Lackey needs to stay focused and keep his ERA and walks under control. Dean Chance should be the final piece here and in truth was the first good Angels ace. Chance won 20 games on a couple of occasions and has three good pitches to get hitters out. If anyone falters Andy Messsersmith is ready to make a few starts, he had a good career and isnt a bad 5th option.

Closer - Troy Percival is the best the Angels have seen here, even with KRod and his record season. Percival saved the biggest games in Angels history and is a player that never seems to rattle under the toughest of moments, he will have a boat load of them in this league.

Spring Training Battles
Garrett Anderson vs Don Baylor vs Tim Salmon (DH)
Wally Joyner vs JT Snow (First base)

Cooperstown rating
Offense - C
Defense - A
Starting pitching - C+
Bullpen - B+
Prediction - 65-97

Quick word with Mike Scioscia
"We obviously lack the big names or fan favorites in many areas. Still if you ask me if we are going to win with the players we have, I would tell you in a second we can and we will."

Catchers - No one has caught more games then Ivan Rodriguez and his defensive skills in his prime are a thing of legend. Rodriguez has all the intangibles as a great backstop and a rocket arm but his bat was not something to laugh at, especially in the clutch. The backup is Jim Sundberg who is another class act and fine defensive catcher. Pudge is the main man here and Sundberg a decent backup.

First Base - A loaded position in Texas history and an open battle heading into spring training. Jeff Bagwell is siad to be the favorite and the hard hitting slugger had a career of slamming fastballs and effort that was off the charts. Mark Teixeira is the backup and many are clamoring for him to play not only becuase of his smooth bat but also because he is one of the best gloves you will see at the position. It will be fun to watch how this position is filled, even more so with Rafael Palmeiro on the roster.

Second Base - Craig Biggio has his claim on this position as a future Hall of Famer. Biggio is a player who teamates and fans love becuase he finds a way to help his team win. Biggio is what this Texas team hopes to be all about. The ageless Julio Franco had some very productive seasons as a second baseman for the Rangers. Franco turned into a nice power threat at the position and routinely worked to improve his game.

Short Stop - Maybe not the most appreciated player Michael Young wll be given a stage to perform at short stop. Young isnt the most natural short stop but its his bat that opens many eyes. Young is an outstanding hitter who has batting titles on his resume and should love this league. Dickie Thon is the utility man on this roster and has a good glove; Thon is also a good baserunner.

Third Base - Another position where the debates are sure to go on. Two very diffrent players will battle it out here as Buddy Bell and Ken Caminiti look to win the job. Bell has the edge most say due to his gold glove and competence to make contact when he needs to. Caminiti has an MVP to his name and is a sourse of power that would look great in the lineup. Look for a platoon here but many teams would love to have either one of these guys.

Outfield - Runs batted in should reach astronomical numbers with this crew. Juan Gonzalez is an RBI machine who could maybe drive in 100 with 50 games to spare, his big bat will be fun to watch. Josh Hamilton is all about Texas power and when in a groove can do everything at the plate. The last starting spot is an open question but Luis Gonzalez is said to be the leader to get the starting spot. Gonzo is a winner and had some ridiculus season's including his 57 home run effort. Gonzalez will be tested by Rueben Sierra who is a plus power hitter who can run and hit for average. Lance Berkman can fill in at a few spots and is a very good bat to turn to on the bench. Julio Cruz in the final man on the roster and he will bring fire to the dugout as he is a vocal leader.

Designated Hitter - Rafael Palmeiro will find a place to play as few players ever have had a more sweet swing to work with. Raffy is a Texas favorite and will help the Texas lineup round itself off to one of the best in the game. Numerous options could fill into this position and Bobby Valentine is sure to get creative with his rotations.

Starting Pitching - No Texas team is complete without strike out king Nolan Ryan. Ryan is the headliner and attacks hitters in the fiercest of ways. Ryan needs to have a big season. JR Richard was on pace to break a world of records before his career derailed. Still anyone who saw Richard throw during his time with the Astros wont forget just how dominant he was. Mike Scott had an unhittable pitch and had a season in 1986 that is one of the best ever. Scott is a nice option from the fire ballers, but strikes out a ton in his own way. Roy Oswalt will fight for the final rotation spot and the right hander has excellent control and movement. Oswalt will be tested by Kevin Brown who wants a spot in the rotation, Brown also had some unbelievanble years but consistency is also important.

Closer - The hard throwing continues as Billy Wagner will be closing the door on games. Wagner throws fireballs as well as a hard slider that hitters just hate. Wagner in his prime has many saying he was one of the best closers ever.

Spring Training Battles
Roy Oswalt vs Kevin Brown (Rotation)
Jeff Bagwell vs Mark Teixeira (1st base)
Ken Caminitti vs Buddy Bell (3rd base)

Cooperstown Rating
Offense - A
Defense - B-
Starting pitching - B+
Closer - A-
Predicton - 90-72

Quick word with Bobby Valentine
"Its an honor to manage this team. I'm just going to let the boys play and try not to get in their way."

Coopers Town Baseball League

SPRING TRAINING REPORT

The feeling of spring was throughout the air like never before as the biggest stars to ever play the game reported to camp and teams tried to mesh chemistry among superstars. This spring in the Cooperstown Baseball League had the usual position battles and small to major injuries, but all of it like a freight train heads towards opening day and the classic struggle towards a pennant.

Here is an update of Spring Training battles as the spring came to a close:
  • Andrew Jones beat out Dale Murphy for the Braves starting center field job.
  • John Wetteland beat Jeff Reardon for the Nationals closer job and Ed Yost beat out Tim Wallach at third.
  • Cap Anson outplayed Mark Grace this spring and will platoon with him. Carlos Zambrano also beat out Kerry Wood for a rotation spot.
  • John Candelaria beat out Bob Friend for the Pirates rotation spot.
  • Don Newcombe won the rotation battle over Fernando Valenzuela and Pedro Guerrero outplayed Ron Cay at third.
  • Will Clark won a platoon role for the Giants first base job with Willie McCovey. Benito Santiago won the catchers job.
  • Muse Haas beat Ben Sheets for the Brewers rotation spot.
  • Don Mattingly outplayed Dave Winfield for the DH spot.
  • David Ortiz will be the Boston DH over Mike Greenwell.
  • John Olerud is the man out in Toronto to Carlos Delgado and Fred McGriff.
  • Bob Wickman is the Indians opening day closer. Larry Doby will start over Kenny Lofton.
  • Jack McDowell is the fourth White Sox starter over Tommy John. Magglio Ordonez won the outfield job over Minni Minoso.
  • Miguel Cabrera beat out George Kell for the third base job in Detroit while Kirk Gibson outplayed Sam Crawford.
  • Justin Mornueu is the starter at first base for the Twins over Kent Hrbeck,
  • Bert Campeneris defeated Miguel Tejada as the A's short stop.
  • Mark Langston will be in the Mariners rotation over Jamie Moyer.
  • And in Texas Roy Oswalt beat out Kevin Brown for the rotation spot on the team while Mark Teixeira outplayed Jeff Bagwell.
Other interesting notes
  • The Yankees had the best record this spring at 15-9. The Chicago White Sox had the worst at 8-16.
  • Shoeless Joe Jackson led the spring in hitting at .444 pace.
  • Lou Gehrig and Eddie Murray both hit league leading seven home runs.
  • Willie Stargell struck out 31 times.
  • Andy Messersmith of the Angels struck out 66 men.
  • Babe Ruth batted .333 with 3 home runs.
Injuries
  • Luke Appling of the Chicago White Sox sprained his ankle badly and will miss the first two weeks of the season. Robin Ventura will be the opening day starter.
  • Lou Whitaker will miss the first week of the season with an oblique strain suffered in early spring.
BROOKS ROBINSON SUSPENDED

To show the intensity of the upcoming season. The biggest news this spring was the outburst of Orioles third base man Brooks Robinson. For whatever reason Robinson was infuriated by a call at third base in which he was covering and the runner was called safe.

Robinson went off on a tirade and had to be restrained before he was ejected. Robinson didnt offer an apology afterward which hurt his cause to calm the situation.

The league came down hard on Robinson with a five game suspension to start the season. The penalty was harsh but is a first view of the stance the league will take on such matters. The league is cracking down in rough house play many are saying due to the old time players like Ty Cobb who think it is second nature.

Robinson still hasnt apologized.

ON TO OPENING DAY.....

A few comments on the rosters - as I said before, there definitely will be different opinions:

I'm not sure I would have included Vandemeer, even with his two no-hitters he was an average pitcher, maybe Gullett ?? Or give Soto AND Rijo spots in the rotation ??

With the Dodgers, what about Pete Reiser in the outfield-mix ??

Giants: Why not Brenly as catcher ??

Brewers - I absolutely agree, but I don't think Prince Fielder (not Cecil) would need to battle Sexson for the regular spot, that should be no contest.

Yankees/Red Sox: Wow, what a team they have !!

Toronto: Where is Jesse Barfield ??

As I said, you can argue on several spots, but you did an excellent job of research and putting the best guys out there ... let the games begin !!

Germaniac thanks for the feedback. Yes there will definately be untold debate about the all time rosters. Also keep in mind that I will be monitering performance as the season goes and any underperformers will be benched. I have also added a Triple A league where many of the fringe players will be playing. So for example if Chet Lemon is tering things up in Triple A for the Tigers he may get a call up ect.

Some comments on the roster suggestions:
  • As for the Reds rotation I never thought of Gullett so thanks for the suggestion. Rijo is already in the rotation and Mario Soto had a rough spring, otherwise he is next in line to take a spot. Also keep in mind I have gone with four man rotation's throughout the league.
  • I will look at Pete Reiser for the Dodgers, must have missed him. Maybe for Zach Wheat?
  • I did look at Brenly at catcher and he is on the Giants triple A roster. To be honest I wasnt impressed with Brenly and gave the chance to others, also keep in mind Benito Santiago was an outstanding defensive catcher in his prime.
  • Prince Fielder did win the job right out and will play everyday.
  • The Blue Jays outfield is loaded. It really came down to Barfield and Danny Tartabull, so I had a tough choice to make. Somehow though I get a feelinng Barfield will see some time in the big show.
Thanks again!

Nick, I won't even try to imagine how much work you put into this thing, not only choosing players from sometimes more than 100 years of team history, putting all these players on certain rosters (and yes, you can't include everybody, just as in RL you have to make decisions not everyone agrees with), and even extending that into Triple-A rosters.

As I said, this is an incredible experiment, and I can't wait to see how it will play out.

Thanks for this incredible effort

Oakland………………..2
Seattle………………….1
WP: Randy Johnson (1-0)
LP: Lefty Grove (0-1)
HR: Jimmie Foxx (1), Alex Rodriguez (1)

A perfect opening day in Seattle as Lefty Grove and Randy Johnson battled until the last inning. In the bottom of the 9th Alex Rodriguez hit a Grove fast ball 451 feet to left for a walk off winner.

Player of the game: Randy Johnson (9 IP, 6 K, 2 BB)

At PNC Park
Washington…………1
Pittsburgh…………...5
WP: Babe Adams (1-0)
LP: Walter Johnson (0-1)
HR: Joe Cronin (1)

Dave Parker doubles in two in a four run fourth inning and ends with three RBI as the Pirates hit Walter Johnson pretty good to take the opener. Babe lace>Adamslace> allowed only a Joe Cronin home run and was in control all evening.

Player of the game: Babe Adams (9 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 5 H, 1 BB)

At Yankee Stadium
Minnesota………….3
NY Yankees……….4
WP: Whitey Ford (1-0)
LP: Johan Santana (0-1)
HR: Chilli Davis (1), Dave Winfield (1)

An amazing game at Yankee Stadium to open the season. Johan Santana had the Yankees inept all evening long with great stuff on the mound. Down two runs in the 9th Tom Kelly stayed with Santana and with two out and two on up came Dave Winfield. Winfield who has been critized by some for being on this roster hit long fly ball that just cleared the wall in left for a dramatic walk off dinger. A perfect start to the Yankee season.>>

Player of the game: Whitey Ford (9 IP, 3 ER, 10 K, 1 BB)

At Busch Stadium
NY Mets……………2
St. Louis……………10
WP: Bob Gibson (1-0)
LP: Tom Seaver (0-1)

Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, and Joe Medwick each drove in two runs as the Cardinals won behind Bob Gibson who went all 9 innings and was in control. Tom Seaver had the toughest start of all allowing 10 earned runs in his first start and never looking right on the mound. A six run 8th inning put the game away.

Player of the game: Bob Gibson (9 IP, 2 ER, 12 K, 1 BB)

At FenwayPark
LA Angels…………..5
Boston………………6 (11 inn)
WP: Jonathan Paplebon (1-0)
LP: Frank Tanana (0-1)
HR: Tris Speaker (1), Bob Boone (1)

Another great opening day game and the hero was Nomar Garciaparra. Twice Nomar came through in a big way, first in the 9th with two out he singled to tie the game and send it into extra innings where in the 11th again with two outs the short stop singled to right to drive in the walk off winner. Frank Tanana pitched very well but the Red Sox kept fighting and took a dramatic one.

At AT&T Park
Philadephia…………2
San Francisco……….1
WP: Pete Alexander (1-0)
LP: Christy Matthewson (0-1)
HR: Greg Luzinksi (1)

As expected a great pitcher’s duel at the Bay but Grover Aleander kept his poise and spoiled opening day. Greg Luzinski hit the go ahead home run in the 5th inning of of Chrsty Matthewson and that is all the support the Phillie ace needed as he went the distance and struck out 8 including Willie Mays twice.

Player of the game: Pete Alexander (9 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 3 BB)

At Camden Yards
Texas……………..6
Baltimore…………8
WP: Jim Palmer (1-0)
LP: Nolan Ryan (0-1)
HR: Mark Teixeira (1)

Davey Johnson broke a tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two run single that would hold up for the Baltimore Orioles and their opening day win. Both Nolan Ryan and Jim Palmer were not at their best but the Orioles kept answering the call never having trailed in this game.

Player of the game: Craig Biggio (3-5 2 RBI 2B)

At Dodger Stadium
Milwaukee…………2
LA Dodgers………..4
WP: Sandy Koufax (1-0)
LP: Don Sutton (0-1)

A typical win for the Dodgers doing it just the way they expect to. Sandy Koufax the winner as he kept the Brewers hitless until the 5th inning and never looked out of control. No big innings in this game, the Dodgers did crack out 11 hits.

Player of the game: Sandy Koufax (9IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6K)

At Rogers Center
Detroit…………….6
Toronto……………7 (10 inn)
WP: Tom Henke (1-0)
LP: Willie Hernandez (0-1)
HR: Kirk Gibson (1), Carlos Delgado (1), John Olerud (1)

Yet another walk off win on opening day as the Blue Jays turned to their bench and John Olerud who hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 10th as a pinch hitter off Willie Hernandez to win this game. Ty Cobb had tied the game with 2 out in the 9th with an RBI single as the runs were flowing at Rogers Center. Kirk Gibson was all over the field in this game.

Player of the game: Kirk Gibson (2-4, 3 R, RBI, HR, SB)

At Turner Field
Cincinnati………….7
Atlanta……………..5
WP: Eppa Rixey (1-0)
LP: Greg Maddux (0-1)
S: Rob Dibble (1)
HR: Eddie Matthews (1)

Johnny Bench went 4-5 and the Cincinnati Reds were less then dominated by Braves starter Greg Maddux. The Reds gave up a five run lead but scored two in the late innings to never trail. Eddie Matthews sent 3-3 and drove in four for the Braves in the losing effort.

Player of the game: Eddie Matthews (3-3, HR, 4 RBI, R)

At Comiskey Park
Cleveland…………….3
Chicago White Sox…..2
WP: Bob Feller (1-0)
LP: Ed Walsh (0-1)
HR: Manny Ramirez (1)

A good pitchers duel for openers in Chicago. Bob Feller allowed two runs but went the distance and pitched out of some tight spots to close out the Sox. Lou Boudreau went 3-3 and Manny Ramirez went deep to account for the Indians runs.

Player of the game: Bob Feller (9 IP, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K)

At Wrigley Field
Kanasas City………….1
Chicago Cubs………..5
WP: Fergie Jenkins
LP: Brett Saberhagen
HR: Hack Wilson (1)

Sammy Sosa doubled in a run in the first inning while Hack Wilson hit a two run home run as the Cubs got off on the right foot. Fergie Jenkins kept the Royals under wraps including holding George Brett hitless. Sosa ended with two doubles and three hits.

Player of the game: Fergie Jenkins (9 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 2BB, 5 H)

Cansesco Responds

Jose Cansesco anwered his critics in a big way tonight by homering with two men on in a pinch hit role as the Athletics won their first game of the season against the Mariners in Seattle.

Down two runs in the 9th Cansesco delivered the big blow and seems determined to get into Connie Mack's starting lineup on merit. The A's of course have a very talented roster and playing time wont be easy to come by.

At Wrigley Field
Kansas City.........4
Chicago Cubs.......8
WP: Mordecai Brown (1-0)
LP: Kevin Appier (0-1)
HR: Ron Santo (1), Billy Williams (1), Mike Sweeney (1)

A six run third inning including two home runs gave to Cubs enough to take their second in a row against KC. Billy Williams hit a three run job as the Cubs roughed up Kevin Appier. Three Finger Brown went the distance on a day the wind was blowing out at Wrigley.

Player of the game: Billy Williams (2-3, 3 RBI, HR, R)

At Safeco Field

WILLIE MAYS BREAKS OUT

The Say Hey kid finally broke out in a big way as he homered twice and drove in five runs in a 9-1 win over the Reds. Mays and the Giants gifted Christy Mathewson his first win in the blow out.

John McGraw and the Giants have been under some early pressure to win as their early record is 2-3 putting them two games behind the rival LA Dodgers already.

The likes of Barry Bonds (.200) and Will Clark (.154) are struggling to start the year. Clark has already seen much of the bench in favor of Willie McCovey.

"It was a Willie Mays kind of day." said Mays about his own perfromance tonight.

Van DerMeer More Brilliant Then Hubbell

In what was a game that had everything and more, twom pitchers towed the mound and gave it everything. The likes of Willie Mays and Pete Rose were helpless between the combined efforts of these two men.

In fact both men had one hitters heading into the last three innings and it was clear that the first man to blink would be hung with the loss. It cam all the way down to the bottom of the ninth where pinch runner Eric Davis stole a base and moved all the way to third base with one out. Ed Roush did the job with a clinching walk off sac fly, and the script was written.

Everyone knows on any given day Johnny Van Dermeer can be brilliant and this was one of those days.

An eight run sixth inning spurred by an Albert Pujols grand slam and the Cardinals turn around a seven run hole to win. Everyone in the St. Louis lineup had a hit and in the end the total was 19. The Brewers are struggling.

Great Chemisty Helping Cubs Right Along

The Chicago Cubs are the early stars of the National League with a 6-1 record and yet to suffer a loss in their first four games at Wrigley Field. The Cubs shut down the Phillies 4-1 behind Rick Sutcliffe on Thursday.

"We may be known as the lovable losers but when you look at our history and our lineup, we are going to win alot of games." said Mark Grace who is batting .278 to start the year.

The Cubs as a team are hitting .301 as a team, best in the National League with Ryne Sandberg loving the lead off spot and batting .393.

This is only the first week of the season however and as of today the entire NL Central has a winning record.

Still optimism at Wrigley Field isnt ever hard to come by.
