1906 Review
In the American League, the Boston Americans bolted to a 4 1/2-game lead by the beginning of August then the defending champion Athletics made their move. Philadelphia overtook Boston by the beginning of September then bolted and galloped home, clinching their second straight AL pennant with 5 games to go. Harry Davis (.289-9-80) and Socks Seybold (.287-2-71) were the hitting stars while the pitching staff led the way with three 20-game winners Chief Bender (24-11, 1.97 ERA), Rube Waddell (20-17, 2.40 ERA) and the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, Eddie Plank (25-6, 1.69 ERA). Boston finished in second place, 7 games behind, led by an offensive attack which was led by George Stone (.323-2-65) and Myron Grimshaw (.261-4-52). On the other side of the diamond, the pitching staff featured three 20-game winners George Winter (20-16, 2.40 ERA), Joe Harris (20-17, 1.92 ERA) and Cy Young (23-15, 2.29 ERA). The St.Louis Browns finished in third place, 9 games behind the front running Philadelphia, behind the bats of Jiggs Donahue (.292-1-52) and Bobby Wallace (.266-3-73) and the arms of Barney Pelty (23-16, 2.32 ERA) and Jack Powell (21-14, 2.05 ERA)
In the National League, it seemed like business as usual as the Pittsburgh Pirates went wire-to-wire to win their third NL title in six years. Leading the way for the Bucs was an line up which featured Ginger Beaumont (.282-6-90), Fred Clarke (.298-1-85) and the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.369-3-84). Their mound staff was led by a pair of 20-game winners, Deacon Phillippe (26-9, 1.97 ERA), and the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher, Jack Pfiester (26-8, 1.56 ERA), who won the pitcher's triple crown. The New York Giants, the only other team to win the NL title in the last 5 years more than once, finished in second place, 5 games behind, were led by the bats of Roger Bresnahan (.321-4-79) and George Davis (.299-3-61) and the arms of four 20-game winners Harry Howell (23-14, 1.71 ERA), Joe McGinnity (21-12, 2.16 ERA), Hooks Wiltse (20-14, 2.51 ERA) and Christy Mathewson (23-11, 1.98 ERA). Finishing a distant third place, 18 games behind the front running Pirates, were the St.Louis Cardinals. Leading the way on offense were Jake Beckley (.295-2-63) and Johnny Kling (.289-2-64). The pitching staff was led by Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown (23-11, 2.06 ERA). During the World Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their record setting year and totally dominated the Athletics, winning the series, 4-games-to-1, for their first world's championship. The star was pitcher Cy Falkenberg, who won three of the Pirates' games. Code:

1907 Review
In the AL, the Detroit Tigers, contenders since last season after acquiring Nap Lajoie, claimed the top rung of the ladder for the first time in their history, clinching the title with about 3 games to go. One of the key figures was Nap Lajoie (.319-0-76), the AL's Outstanding Hitter. Helping him on the attack was Sam Crawford (.320-1-76) and Ty Cobb (.302-2-52). Wild Bill Donovan (22-14, 1.94 ERA), Eddie Cicotte (19-14, 2.07 ERA) and Bugs Raymond (19-8, 1.52 ERA) provided the arms to lead the Tigers. The Chicago White Sox finished in second place, 4 games behind Detroit, thanks to the bat of Tim Jordan (.268-7-79). Leading the mound staff was Frank Smith (22-13, 1.53 ERA). Ending up in third place was the Cleveland Naps, led by the bats of Nig Clarke (.300-1-71) and Charlie Hickman (.241-4-76) and the arms of Charlie Smith (21-16, 2.11 ERA) and the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, Addie Joss (27-8, 1.40 ERA).
The National League continued to witness the dominance of the Pittsburgh Pirates, as they ran away to win their second straight title by a record 15 games. With Fred Clarke (.284-1-84), Tommy Leach (.289-5-100), and the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.343-5-87) leading the attack, the Pirates dominated the league. Leading the Bucs' mound staff was their three 20-game winners: Jack Pfiester (22-12, 1.82 ERA), Deacon Phillippe (25-5, 1.56 ERA), and the league's Outstanding Pitcher, Cy Falkenberg (24-12, 1.72 ERA). The Reds finished in second place, 15 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Harry Steinfeldt (.288-1-66) and the arms of 20-game winner Orval Overall (22-13, 2.15 ERA). The Giants stayed with the Reds all season long and ended the season in a tie for second place, 15 games behind, riding the arms of Harry Howell (21-14, 2.36) and Christy Mathewson (21-14, 1.63 ERA) along with the bats of Art Devlin (.286-6-36) and Cy Seymour (.278-6-93). During the World Series, the Pirates pitching took center stage as they took command and allowed the Tigers only 10 runs in their 5 games, which included a 4-3, 14 inning affair in the second game of the series. Ed Karger was the pitching star as he won all three starts, as he led the Bucs to their second straight world's championship. Code:

I couldn't believe it either. Maybe Nap was whining about wanting to be on a contender or a team that was winning. Now he is with Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford. Any guess as to where Detroit was heading? (no need to answer).

1908 Review
In the National League, the New York Giants started off slow, trailing the front running Phillies by 3 games at the beginning of May, then played winning ball the rest of the way. The Giants took the lead for good by the end of May and clinched their second NL title with 10 games to go. The Giants' attack was led by Larry Doyle (.323-4-78) and Roger Bresnahan (.294-3-71). The mound staff was led by 20-game winners Christy Mathewson (23-12, 1.74 ERA) and the NL's Outstanding Pitcher, Hooks Wiltse (23-10, 1.68 ERA). The defending Pittsburgh Pirates finished in second place, 6 games behind the Bucs, thanks to the hitting of the senior circuit's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.320-5-72) and the arms of 20-game winners Jack Pfiester (23-13, 1.76 ERA), Kaiser Wilhelm (21-18, 2.48 ERA) and Howie Camnitz (20-13, 2.11 ERA). The Chicago Cubs finished the season a distant third, 11 games behind New York, led by the bat of the NL's Newcomer of the Year, Vin Campbell (.337-5-80) and the arm of Fred Beebe (24-14, 2.18 ERA), who led the majors with 24 wins.
The American League pennant chase boiled down to three teams, the Philadelphia Athletics, Detroit Tigers and St.Louis Browns. Their race was so close that the AL pennant wasn't decided until there were two games remaining in the schedule. Thanks to the pitching of Eddie Plank (22-12, 1.77 ERA), Chief Bender (19-8, 1.62) and Rube Waddell (19-13, 2.12 ERA), the Athletics to win their third title in four years. Frank Baker (.280-0-74) and Eddie Collins (.275-0-66) led the Mackmen's attack with Danny Murphy chipping in with 88 RBIs to help the cause. The leaders of the pitching staff once again were Long Tom Hughes (22-12, 2.41 ERA) and Cy Young (20-16, 2.17 ERA). The Detroit Tigers had a 0.5 game lead over the Browns and a 1-game lead over the Athletics but finished in a tie for second place, 1 game behind the Mackmen. The team was led at the plate by Nap Lajoie (.296-1-81), Sam Crawford (.302-15-99) and the AL's Outstanding Hitter, Ty Cobb (.357-4-78). The mound staff was led by the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, Bugs Raymond (23-11, 1.36 ERA) and 22-game winner Ed Summers (22-16, 2.86 ERA). The St.Louis Browns ended the season in the tie for second place, thanks to the hitting of Mike Mitchell (.270-3-70). The pitching staff was led by 20-game winners Barney Pelty (23-13, 1.93 ERA),Bill Bailey (21-13, 3.44 ERA) and Jack Powell (20-16, 2.31 ERA. In the World Series, the Athletics and Giants split the two games in New York then headed to Philadelphia. The teams then split the first two game before Rube Waddell out dueled Christy Mathewson to give Philadelphia a 3-2 lead in games as they headed back to the Big Apple. In game six, Harry Davis broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 10th with a 2-run homer then Biff Schlitzer held on to allow the Giants to score one run as the Athletics won, 4-3, to win their first world's championship.
