1888
Baltimore, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Providence all move into new parks.
The Cubs looked poised to claim their first title since 1882, before going 2- down the stretch. The New York Giants put up a 7-1 finishing kick to take their second straight CA title. Louisville takes their second title, first since 1884. The Colonels jump out to a 2-0 lead and take their first Chadwick Trophy 3-1. The New York Giants take their 4 pennant in 5 years with little resistance. The UL went into the last day of the season with Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo tied for first. Indianapolis had never won, Cleveland hadn't finished better than 5th since their last pennant, while Buffalo had recently been a contender.
The Bison and Indians both win as Cleveland loses. For all the near ties, this is the first deadlocked finished. Buffalo hosting the Indians. 1B William O'Brien's grand slam powers the Bison to a 3rd pennant overall, a second Empire State Series. The same results, Giants 3, Bisons 1. The Leagues expand to 154 games, the result is the first 100 game winner and first 100 game loser. The Cubs cruise to their first title since 1882, the last of 5 pennants in six years. The Cardinals, however, have an anti-dynasty going. How bad were the 1890 Cardinals? In 1889, the Cardinals won 53 games in a 128 game season. In 1890 the Cardinals won 52 in 154.
The Indianapolis Indians, after near misses in 89, 86, 76-78 finally get their first title. They were the last of the original 12 to win a title. The Cubs win the Chadwick Trophy 3-2, one of the few to go the distance. In the end, they just ran out of time. As the calendar turned to October, the New York Giants stood 4 games behind Philadelphia. The Giants put on an 8-1 finishing kick while the Phils squeaked to the end with a 5-4 record. Philadelphia holds on for their 4th pennant, first since 1880.
The Pirates become the first UL squad to win 100 games in a return to championship form. From 1872 to 1878 the Bucs won 3 pennants and had two season missing by a game. After a .500 finish in 1880, the Pirates had not reached higher than 4th. The Phillies sweep the first Keystone Series.
