Monthly Update

APRIL 1951

Our stars finished their first month in the big leagues and although still much too early, some early talents are already obvious. Here is our update:

Joe DiMaggio
GABH2B3BHRRBIBBKAVGOBPSLGSB
135824502844.414.452.6030

Joe has lived up to the earliest hype and already has shown an ability with the bat that a veteran may have. He struck out only four times all month and even though the Yankees are struggling a bit, Joe remains the talk of the town. He is the early front runner for Rookie of the Year and maybe more.

Mickey Mantle
GABH2B3BHRRBIBBKAVGOBPSLGSB
1454161028913.296.391.4261

The Mick has been solid this month as well including hitting a mammoth home run of over 500 feet that the league is still talking about. Mantle has been overlooked a bit in New York so far, but he has locked down a regular place in right field.

Duke Snider
GABH2B3BHRRBIBBKAVGOBPSLGSB
1347123024411.255.314.4471

Duke hasnt done poorly himself for an opening month. He can be overwhelmed at times still by the best pitchers but he has poise at the plate and is benefiting well from his experianced and classy teamates.

Willie Mays
GABH2B3BHRRBIBBKAVGOBPSLGSB
145511311569.200.274.3450

Mays has struggled a bit in his opening month in the middle of te lineup. He hasnt gotten on base very much and hasnt made solid contact. He has shown flashes in a couple of games and is sure to get better. He defense has been very good in the Polo Grounds.

Ken Griffey Jr.
GABH2B3BHRRBIBBKAVGOBPSLGSB
13234001577.174.367.3040

The Kid is mainly a pinch hitter in his first month and hasnt done anything special, although he has gotten on base at a good clip. The Reds in general are off to a slow start and maybe the lack of pressure if the team falls out of the race may work in his favor. He has been overmatched up to now.

Great concept! If this follows R/L at all, DiMaggio and Griffey should be the top 2 in the first couple of seasons, with the other three becoming more of a factor in a year or two. My heart is definitely with The Mick, but my head tells me either Griffey or Mays is going to win this.

Yes thanks for following.

Your right about how things will go if we follow R/L but thats the fun with redoing history, you never know how things will go. Injuries and circumstance play a big role. For now Griffey is on the bench for the Reds while the other four stars are playing everyday.

Mantle has been impressive with 5 home runs in a little over a month. As for me I will always be a DiMaggio fan and hope he shows his class.

At Briggs Stadium
NY Yankees..............7
Detroit Tigers...........15

Joe DiMaggio 2-4 HR 2B R RBI (.352, 3, 11)

Mickey Mantle 1-5 2 K (.259, 5, 13)

DiMaggio had a good game at Briggs field including his third homer but the Yankee pitching and Vic Raschi get mugged with 14 runs in the last three innings. The Yankees also hit back to back to back home runs in this game (DiMaggio, Woodling, Collins)

At Ebbets Field
St. Louis Cardinals.......7
Brooklyn Dodgers........11

Duke Snider 1-4 RBI (.301, 2, 9)

Snider keeps his average over .300 as he continues to bat 8th and the Dodgers stay in first place.

At Briggs Stadium
NY Yankees...........3
Detroit Tigers.........5

Joe DiMaggio...........1-4 2B K (.348, 3, 11)

Mickey Mantle 0-4 3 K (.247, 5, 13)

The Mick is fooled big time striking out three times, Mantle leads the majors in strikeouts with 24 and lefty Ted Gray had his number. DiMaggio did hit a ringing double but the Yanks still lose.

At Ebbets Field
Chicago Cubs..............0
Brooklyn Dodgers.........6

Duke Snider 1-3 R (.303, 2, 9)

Dodgers shut out the Cubs behind Preacher Roe who is having a heck of a season (5-1, 1.58). Snider still is having a good start to his career.

At The Polo Grounds
St. Louis Cardinals...........1
NY Giants.......................4

Willie Mays 1-4 3B (.259, 3, 11)

Mays triples while batting fifth in the lineup. The kid is a stable presence in center field now.

At Braves Field
Cincinnati Reds..............4
Boston Braves...............5 (10 inn)

Ken Griffey Jr 0-1 K (.212, 1, 7)

The Reds blow a three run lead in the ninth inning and are having a tough season. Griffey whiffs in his only at bat and isnt getting many atbats.

At Ebbets Field
Chicago Cubs.........14
Brooklyn Dodgers......2

Duke Snider 1-4 R (.300, 2, 9)

The Cubs drub the Dodgers as Ralph Branca gets battered.

At Cleveland stadium
NY Yankees............6
Cleveland Indians.....14

Joe DiMaggio 1-4 R 2B 2 K (.344, 3, 11)

Mickey Mantle 1-5 R K E (.244, 5, 13)

The Yanks continue to slump in the loss. DiMaggio in a rarity strikes out twice against Bob Lemon while Mantle has his issues with a big error in the field.

At The Polo Grounds
St. Louis Cardinals.........6
NY Giants.....................9

Willie Mays 2-5 HR 2 RBI 2B R (.267, 4, 13)

Mays is getting hot as he hits a home run to be remembered that carried 509 measured feet to center field, few thought this kid had that type of power. Mays is coming into his own and sits well in the 5th spot in the Giants order.

At Braves Field
Cincinnati Reds...........3
Boston Braves............2 (10 inn)

Ken Griffey Jr 0-1 K BB (.206, 1, 7)

Junior doesnt put the ball in play with a walk and a strikeout in a rare Reds win. The kid is still primarily a pinch hitter for one of the worse teams in the league.

Yeah the Giants are playing well in general and have a hot lineup with Irvin and Thompson on either side of Mays in the lineup. I was impressed with the 509 foot home run at the Polo grounds.

Junior is in a tough spot. I hope this lack of atbats and time on the bench in his rookie year doesnt stunt his develpoment.

Thanks for following.

At Ebbets Field
Chicago Cubs...............5

Mickey Mantle 3-5 2 HR 4 RBI 2 R SB (.265, 7, 17)

A monster game and his best as a pro by Mickey Mantle. Two long home runs and Mantle is showing his power coupled with his great speed. DiMaggio has been quiet of late as the Mick begins to steal the show.

Another game that Junior isnt a part of. Junior's morale is very unhappy.

At The Polo Grounds

At Crosley Field (Game 1)
St. Louis Cardinals......4
Cincinnati Reds...........3

Ken Giriffey Jr 0-3 BB E (.189, 1, 7)

A nervous rookie gets a start and goes hitless while commiting an error in another Reds loss. Things arnt very good in Cincinnati right now.

At Crosley Field (Game 2)
St. Louis Cardinals.......12
Cincinnati Reds.............7

Ken Griffey Jr 0-0 BB R (.189, 1, 7)

Reds lose second game as well and have the worse record in baseball. Junior walks and scores and if anything seems to have a good eye at the plate.

At Shibe Park (Game 1)
NY Yankees..........3
Philadelphia A's......8

Joe DiMaggio 0-3 BB (.336, 3, 12)

Mickey Mantle 1-4 HR 2 RBI R BB 2 K (.265, 8, 19)

Mantle goes deep again, his third in two days and now LEADS the majors in home runs with 8. The Mick has taken over as the talk of the New York area as DiMaggio has had an off month (.250 in May).

At Shibe Park (Game 2)
NY Yankees...........3
Philadelphia A's.......13

Joe DiMaggio 1-4 (.333, 3, 12)

Mickey Mantle 1-4 HR RBI R K E (.264, 9, 20)

The Yankees get swept in a doubleheader and times are not all swell in the Bronx. Mantle does it again with his fourth home run in three games. The rookie is whallpoing the baseball and has reached 20 RBI.

At The Polo Grounds
Philadelphia Philles...........2
NY Giants......................4

Willie Mays 2-4 R RBI SB (.276, 4, 16)

Mays stays hot for the Giants who have won 12 of 13. Another multi hit game and his first career stolen base.

DiMaggio Homers In Yanks Win

At Yankee Stadium
Cleveland Indians..........3
NY Yankees.................4

Joe DiMaggio 1-4 HR 2 RBI R 2 K (.331, 4, 14)

Mickey Mantle did not play

DiMaggio gets a crucial home run in the Yankee win and keeps his average up. The hot Mantle is sat for this game, a curious move by Stengel to keep such a hot bat out of the lineup but the Yanks win anyway.
