Does anyone here think the US had even a slight chance of doing really, really well. Or am I just blinded by my partisan support for the US squad?

If they don't advance out of the group stage, it'll be a disaster. There's no earthly reason the US shouldn't do better than Algeria and Slovenia.

dola

Charlie Davies is officially not going, though. That hurts. I was holding out the faint hope that he'd be fit in time.

Anyone else near Princeton, NJ and want to stalk the USMNT during training? They start Monday!

I am rooting for the U.S. because I will L.M.A.O. if all these countries who live and die by soccer are beaten by us.
Global resentment will be at its all time high.
The idea of it makes me a little misty.

A friend of mine is a subcontractor for ESPN. He left today for South Africa and won't be back until it's all over.

I read that ESPN is sinking 22x the marketing and advertising into this vs the 2006 Cup. That is nice to hear.

If the US does not advance out of the group stage it will be seen as a disaster but will not really be one. Algeria and Slovenia are good teams and will be hard to break down defensively as they will be sitting with 9 men behind the ball and mostly counter attacking. The US is still a longshot to outright beat the English which means either they take 1 point from the game or none. That means they have to get points from the remaining two games and win at least one. If they lose to England then they need at least four points and goal difference to advance, which will not be easy. The best thing that could happen to the US is that Algeria and Slovenia tie one another and only take a single point from their game together. That would make things much easier.

I think they could steal a victory from England.

They did it to Spain, and had Brazil within 15 minutes of beating them before falling apart.

Well sure, but the group draw for the U.S. (and England!) was about as advantageous as they could reasonably hope for. The U.S. could fall in the group stages, but at the same time it's reasonable to hope for them to make the final 8 as they did in 2002.

It will be seen as a disaster for England if they don't win all of their group games.

With David Villa moving to Barcelona, Henry's definitely moving somewhere.

I do actually wonder about this. If we were ever actually good at the world's game, would other countries just hate us even more? Sometimes I'm glad we're not that good at soccer because it gives us something in which we're underdogs.

I want to see us win a World Cup, certainly, but I would always trade success in the World Cup for, say, success at the FIBA World Championship.

Yeah I really doubt any of us will ever see the USA win a World Cup. If we didnt play in the Concacaf we wouldnt even qualify for most World Cups.

Oh wow. I'm a big Barca mark and I didn't know we signed him. That just locked up another title, in my opinion.

I'm calling a 1-1 USA England match

I like the Villa news today as a report comes out that La Liga is in debt 3.5 billion Euros

Maybe they are looking to start their own nation.

Absolutely not true. The Euro qualifying groups usually arent tough at all. Slovenia has qualified for two of the last three WC's for example. After the top tier of clubs, there is a big drop off.
