Cardinal Rule: A Fictional Historical 1901 Replay

The Cardinals upped their winning streak to 7 by pounding out 19 hits in a 13-6 win over the Reds today at Robison Field. Seven starters had at least two hits and five had at least two RBI.

John Burt got it going with an RBI single after Thomas singled and Downing doubled. Duarte added a sac fly, and Keith drove home Burt with a single. 3-0 Cards after 1.....but the Reds would get them all back on a Turner Hunter double into the left field corner off Steve O'Herlihy.

The Cards re-loaded the bases again for John Burt in the 2nd and he delivered an RBI single, which would have been two, but Preston Thomas got gunned down at the plate. No matter, Orlando Ortiz drove in Downing and Thomas. All in all, six runs crossed the plate in the inning.

After that though, it was a pretty uneventful game.

Off day tomorrow, then two more against the Reds.

Thursday, May 2nd, 1901 Brooklyn Superbas: B. Leeder was injured on a defensive play. The Diagnosis: strained rib cage muscle. This is a day-to-day injury expected to last 1-2 weeks.

By the way - if anyone reading this can help with a technical issue...

As you've noticed, the Reds logo shows up and the Cardinals' doesn't. I installed the logo pack available through add-ons, and the St. Louis logo isn't "taking".

The White Sox, Reds and Orioles* are all taking, but not the Cardinals, Brewers*, Tigers, Giants, Phillies, and Pirates.

*I realize these teams are not the present-day incarnation of the team names, but I would still think they'd show up.

The win streak is over. The Reds took the Cardinals behind the proverbial shed in a 9-6 victory, ending the St. Louis win streak at seven.

The game didn't get off to a good start, when in the top of the 1st and a man on, Hector Pena drove a ball over the short right-center porch off of Jorge Montalvo for a 2-0 Reds lead.

Duarte led off the bottom of the second with a triple into right, and Willie Keith drove him in with a base hit, but the Cards would get no more. After that, it was downhill again for Montalvo, whose lack of control today was a killer. Harvey Thompson then added a 2-run double in the 5th for the final blow. Montalvo just didn't seem to have it today.

Unfortunately, Pablo Gutierrez didn't have it either. Pena hit another homer in the 7th. My whole team has hit two HR all year and I just saw someone hit two out in one game!

Just not my day today. After seven wins in a row, it's to be expected!

Back on the winning track today as the Cards dispatched the Reds by a score of 9-2

First inning woes struck again, as the Reds scored two in the top against Pacheco.

No more scoring until the 7th, where singles by Alvarado and Downing tied the game. Then with 2 men on.....John Burt 3-run bomb to right!!

Burt added a triple in a 4-run 8th that featured three Reds errors, and Pacheco shut em down in the 9th.

Due to the wacky scheduling of the day, right after a four-game series at home against the Reds, where do we go next? Cincinnati for four more!!

Tired of playing the Pirates and Reds!!

Anyways, after Cincy got one in the first (again....have to find some way to stop this!) Cesar Duarte tied the game in the bottom of the 1st with a long sacrifice fly, but Robert Wilson put the Reds up again in the 3rd. Wilson struck again for a 2-run single in the 5th and it was 5-1 after 5.

Duarte tried his best to make up some of the deficit again, as he drove in Lopez with an RBI double. The Cards had another shot in the 7th, but John Burt flew out to the track with two men on. Trying again in the 8th, Willie Keith tripled to right-center to cut the deficit to two, but that was all.

With one on, one out in the 9th, Downing doubled into the corner, putting the tying run on second for Burt. Amazingly, he wasn't intentionally walked, and Burt hit a sac fly to center, trimming the deficit to one. However, Orlando Ortiz flied out to end the game.

5-4 Reds, final. Cards drop 2nd in a row.

Pittsburgh Pirates: S. Hernández was injured while running the bases. The Diagnosis: quadriceps strain. He's expected to miss about 4 weeks. Chicago Orphans: S. Sullivan was injured while throwing the ball. The Diagnosis: tired arm. He's expected to miss about 5 days.

The Cardinals got back on the winning track today with a strong outing from Jorge Montalvo and shoddy Reds defense in a 9-1 win at League Park II.

Montalvo got out of a bases loaded, one out jam only surrendering one run in the top of the 4th. Willie Keith tied the score in the bottom half after a Duarte double.

St. Louis picked up one in the 6th, two in the 7th, and two more in the eighth as the Reds made eight errors in the game. Why the AI could care less about defense, I'll never know.

Another win today, as the Cardinals move to 13-5 after a 12-4 win in Cincy.

Started Jorge Velasco today, and it was probably a mistake, which was validated right away when Brent Curtis hit a 2-run homer in the 1st. Fortunately, he got those runs right back with an RBI double. Preston Thomas followed with a 2-run double of his own, and then another RBI single in the 4th to make it 5-2.

I had an odd play in the 6th though. Runners 1st and 2nd, bouncer in front of the plate, catcher goes to 2nd.......but the ball is thrown OUT OF PLAY?? What did he do? Throw it over the fence? *makes note to put this into complaint thread*

Anyways, that error led to three runs in the 6th and a 8-2 lead. Bottom half, Velasco held just barely, walking in a run and then yielding to the bullpen in the 7th.

Pablo Gutierrez put in three strong innings of relief, and Willie Keith added a three run triple in the ninth.

Wednesday, May 8th, 1901

Chicago White Sox: N. Harris pitches a 5-hit shutout against the Cleveland Blues with 0 strikeouts and 1 BB allowed!

Chicago Orphans: C. Martínez pitches a 5-hit shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates with 5 strikeouts and 2 BB allowed!

Detroit Tigers: R. Salazar was injured while throwing the ball. The Diagnosis: arthritic elbow. He's expected to miss about 7-8 months.

A masterpiece performance by Angelo Pacheco was the story of the game today, as the Cardinals finish their 8-game marathon series with the Reds win a 6-1 victory at League Park II.

Orlando Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the 1st for a 3-0 lead after John Burt reached on an error that also scored Preston Thomas. In his next at-bat, Ortiz drove in Burt again with a single to give him his 20th RBI.

Pacheco got himeself into trouble in the 3rd, loading the bases with no one out, but got out of it only allowing one run.

The score remained 4-1 until the 8th, when Willie Keith added a two run double for the final margin.

The other big news was Cincy starter Michael King leaving the game in the 8th. He'll need Tommy John surgery and will miss a year.

Finally out of Cincinnati, the Cardinals seemed a little road weary. So an extra-inning game wasn't exactly in their plans - and neither was a loss. But after a four-run 8th inning rally highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of John Burt, the home Chicago Orphans scored a run in the 10th of Steve O'Herlihy for a 6-5 victory.

The winning run scored when David Castillo got on with a single, stole 2nd, stole 3rd, and scored on a Sylvester Sullivan single. Chicago starter John Reynolds and O'Herlihy went the distance in this one.

Washington Senators: T. Valentín goes 5-5 against the Baltimore Orioles, with 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI and 4 R.

Well, you can't win them all.

A sloppy defensive and offensive performance was the name of the game today in Chicago, as St. Louis was dominated by Orphans starter John Jacobson in an 8-1 Chicago win.

St. Louis contributed to the Chicago attack by committing four errors, leading to three unearned runs in the 7th inning.

We finish the series tomorrow.

And I just noticed this.....I'm in the middle (or really, the beginning) of a 25 GAME ROAD TRIP!!!

Safe to say they don't have many of those anymore

Saturday, May 11th, 1901

Pittsburgh Pirates: D. Lowe was injured while throwing the ball. The Diagnosis: shoulder soreness. He's expected to miss about 4 weeks.

Big loss for Pittsburgh.

The St. Louis Cardinals are back on the winning track after a 11-5 win in Chiacgo today.

After spotting Chicago an early 3-0 lead, the Orphans decided to give it back, and the Cardinals tied the game with back-to-back errors, a Steve Downing triple, and a John Burt groundout.

Burt struck again in the 7th with an RBI triple, extending his hitting streak to 17, and Orlando Ortiz drove him home for a 7-3 score.

In the 8th, the Cardinals unleashed on Eric Tucker, with both Downing and Burt picking up 2-RBI hits, but shoddy Cardinals defense gave two runs right back in the bottom half.

Jorge Velasco didn't suck and went the distance, allowing 7 hits and only 2 walks.

Off day tomorrow, then it's off to Boston.

CF S. Kelly of the Philadelphia Athletics honored: Wins the MLB AL Player of the Week Award.

SS B. Mooney of the Boston Beaneaters honored: Wins the MLB NL Player of the Week Award.

The big news today is the benching of SS Gerardo Alvarado in favor of UI Quinn Allison.

When reached for comment, Manager Jaime Garcia said, "Well, Alvarado just hasn't been producing. He has more strikeouts than anyone else and is only hitting .177 so far. I think it's time to at least give Allison a shot and see where he takes us."

St. Louis continued their road trip today, heading to Boston for a 4-game set against the Beaneaters. Today, they came away with a 10-5 win, but it was costly, as starter Angelo Pacheco was injured sliding into second base trying to beat out a throw.

The Quinn Allison experiment came with mixed results, as he drove in 3, but made a crucial error that allowed Boston to get back into it.

However, when sliding into second base on a fielders choice, Pacheco jammed his finger and had to leave the ballgame.

Pablo Gutierrez had to come in and pitch, and a Quinn Allison error led to three unearned Beaneaters runs and a 6-5 game. Boston would get no closer however, as John Burt added a two-run double, and Gutierrez closed out the game for a 10-5 final.

It was determined that Pacheco may miss his next start, as the injury was on his pitching hand. Manager Jaime Garcia said "We'll take it day by day".

St. Louis Cardinals: Á. Pacheco was injured in a collision at a base. The Diagnosis: bruised finger. This is a day-to-day injury expected to last 5 days.

A lackluster performance today as the Cardinals were dominated by Beaneaters lefty Ron Lamb in a 4-1 loss in Boston today.

St. Louis only managed five hits, and the only run came in the 9th when right fielder Bruce Massey dropped an easy flyball that would have preserved the shutout.

The offensive and defensive "effort" (Steve Downing made back to back errors in the 8th that led to three unearned Boston runs) overshadowed an otherwise solid Steve O'Herlihy start.

Wednesday, May 15th, 1901

Boston Americans: T. Huff pitches a 5-hit shutout against the Washington Senators with 1 strikeouts and 2 BB allowed!

Back on the winning track today as the Cardinals took it to Boston for a 7-3 win over the Beaneaters.

John Burt extended his hitting streak to 19 with a triple in the 4th inning.

A late 9th inning rally fell short today in Boston as the Beaneaters managed a split of the 4-game series, beating the Cardinals by a score of 3-2.

Cesar Duarte doubled with 1 out in the 9th, Willie Keith followed that up with a double of his own. After Alvarado came in to pinch run, he scored on a Quinn Allison single. Allison went to third on a passed ball and groundout, but Preston Thomas failed in the attempt to tie the game.

Jorge Velasco didn't have that bad of a game though, allowing only 6 hits over his 8 innings of work.

And John Burt extended his hitting streak to 20!

Now it's off to Brooklyn for 4.
