I may,I'll see how it goes.As for my 06 Athletics,I ended up making it to the World Series and losing to the Pirates in 5.After that,I began reading another Roger Angell book(Five Seasons) and it got my juices flowing for a 70's Dynasty, and I have to say,I like it much better.I was born in 71 so right around 77 is where my first baseball memories lie,I distinctly remember "Black Friday" against the Dodgers and the subsequent World Series where the Yankees won for the first time since 62

I can't wait to see what happens when the Red Sox start hitting.
And, you didn't even mention anything about the 38-year old Red Sox outfielder and his great start, a .361 batting average! He is only one HR away from tying Ralph Kiner on the all-time HR list. Plus, look at the gawdy numbers of the Redbirds' Ted Simmons. He has gotten off to a terrific start. |

Some fine races forming up. Only Cincy seems to have any real advantage so far.
Ted Simmons had a phenomenal month. It can't last, but that one week with a .765 average is simply amazing. As you say, if the Red Sox' bats start hitting (or perhaps more correctly they start hitting for power), the AL East race could open up...though I suspect that'll be close throughout. |

I thought that the .765 average for the week was a misprint at first, but it was one helluva week for Ted Simmons. Last edited by captaincarl; 01-14-2009 at 10:08 AM. |

Dude I gotta say, you're right in my wheelhouse with this. This is where I became a baseball fan,I was 7 years old and the Phillies had just lost to the Dodgers in the worst way possible.I remember going into 78' just baseball crazy! I still have my baseball cards from that era in my parents basement somewhere.Just awesome.

Then you know what I'm talking about,I bet Carl Yastrzemski was as much a hero to you growing up as Mike Schmidt was to me,I'll always look back fondly at that era and those teams.

It's amazing how, even 30 years later, hearing the name of a player you haven't seen in awhile can still cause a stir in the heart.
Jim Rice was my iconic figure of this era. Yes, there were certainly better players, but since I grew up listening to the BoSox, in an era where their pitching was...eh....his ability to lead the offense really left an impression in my mind. |
