IIRC, at some point there was (or for all I know still exists) a bug where a crash at the end of a game would cause the player stats to be updated but the games to not count in the standings. For example, my computer will occasionally lock up when going into standby mode. If I've set a game to play out with me watching it, I'd walk away at some point, the computer would eventually try to go into standby, would lock up, and when I came back I'd have to do a hard reset with OOTP still active at the boxscore screen.
The end result was the game looked like it had been played, but standings weren't ever updated, so the teams were missing a game. Like I said, not sure if this still exists in OOTP9, or is ancient history.

Correction: it could happen prior to 1951 (and leaving out the exception of the 1972 strike season).
Originally, MLB rules stated that all games had to be played before the scheduled closing date of the season. That included all make up games of prior postponements. If a game couldn't be made up by the scheduled end of the season, it wasn't made up at all, regardless of its impact on the pennant race. Thus it was possible for a team to win or lose the pennant by a rain out. If team A and team B were tied going into the last day of the season, and A played and won while B had its game rained out, team A won the pennant by a half-game. Conversely, if A played and lost while B was rained out, then team B won the pennant by a half-game. It was precisely this prospect of a team winning or losing the pennant which finally prompted the leagues to change their rules. Now all games having a bearing on the pennant race are to be made up, even if they have to be played after the scheduled closing date of the season. |
