You're not necessarily in the minority. Sure, I'd like to see customization available for the playoffs, and support that others do. It's not a deal breaker for me, plus there's no guarantee that I would actually incorporate it into my leagues. Just because I can do what ever I want with the playoffs, doesn't mean I will.

On the corpse. My question is...
No, my question. I get to go first. Why in pluperfect hell would you pee on corpse?

I would like to see playoff customisation built into the game. It's not too difficult to do outside of the game, but it takes a bit more time to get through the playoffs.

the concept of playoffs

I often think the concept of playoffs has been warped over time. The whole idea initially, as I see it, was that you have these independent leagues where all the teams play each other, and in the end you have the best team in each league. Then, when those leagues have finished their seasons, the team that has been declared the best in one league plays the best team in another.

Now, in baseball, playoffs are used to determine what the best team in each league is, and the leagues even play each other during the year. While it is more fun to watch, it really isn't as meaningful as when two unrelated leagues sent their best to play against one another. It certainly doesn't determine the best team.

I think the concept of playoffs now are about money and about generating more revenue by keeping fans interested in the game for longer. The NCAA tournament does what you basically articulate though, taking the best teams from leagues that don't necessarily play each other and allow them to test themselves against each other yearly.

In pro sports, things are so self-contained. But i don't know if it's realistic to expect people to be interested in baseball's playoffs when they haven't watched the whole season, but giving fans in cities that otherwise might not care a chance to watch grows the game and more importantly, increased the wads of cash the owner makes and gives them an incentive to try to make that happen regularly.

Without playoffs, baseball would turn into what it used to be. The big teams winning year in and year out. That would kill the sport off in these modern times.

As it relates to OOTP, the game is already so customizable, that this is too egregious an error not to factor in, since people are able to do so much more..why not let them create zany playoff arrangements or at least, ones that don't require funky divisional setups.

So, Redsoxford, would you care to elaborate on how this could be done. I am very interested in customizing the playoffs. My issue is that I would like to qualify teams for the playoffs which the current set up doesn't allow. So, are you talking about in schedule editor creating a playoff game or is there another way that I am missing?

Just to return for a moment to the discussion of different playoff formats, here are a couple more examples.

In the Mexican League, a split-season format is used. But rather than using the winning percentage, a point system is used. Teams are awarded points based on their position of finish in each half of the season. At the end of the regular season, the clubs with the highest overall point totals make the playoffs.

Six teams from each division made the post-season. Within each division, the 1st round had 1v6, 2v5, 3v4. In the 2nd round, the three 1st round winners plus the 1st round losing team with the best regular season record advanced to the second round. So, a team could lose its first playoff series and yet still advance.

The 2nd round was a standard 1v4, 2v3. The 3rd round matched up the two remaining teams. The champions from each division then played for the league title.

In the independent United League, the 2008 playoff is a "semi" split-season format. There are two halves to the season, and the first half division winner makes the playoffs. The second playoff qualifier is not the second half division winner, as would normally be the case in a split-season format, but instead is the non-division winning team with the best record in the overall season.

*** (Japanese major league) in 2007 used a similar format for each league, but with 3 teams instead of 5.

2nd place vs 3rd place (3 game series, higher ranked team hosts all games)
* 1st place vs. winner of 2 v 3 (5 game series, 1st hosts all games)

Japan Series (7 games, 2-3-2 format)

* In 2008, the format will be changed for the 1st place vs. 2nd/3rd series. Now, the league champion begins the series with an automatic win. So it is a six game series, with first team to four wins making it to the Japan Series.

It would be great to have this kind of format possible for the next version of OOTP.
