Anyone watch Shearn in the ESPN game last night? Gave up the leadoff HR to Soriano and a solo shot to Soto, but was great other than that.

Nah, I'd like to see him pitch before the return to oblivion.

I saw the first couple of innings. He has a wicked 12-6 curve which he likes to rely on, but I agree with the commentators that its regularity is probably something that major leaguers could pick up on after a couple of ABs. Given that and his age, he'll probably be back in the minors next season.

Can't feel too bad for him, though, if that happens. There must be quite a lot of career minor leaguers to never even get a cup of coffee in the bigs, so he's got health insurance (for life?) and some great stories. It's going to take a lot to wipe that smile off his face.

How about a guy making his major league debut at age 39? A shame that he was so terrible here in the States.

He was the oldest player to make his MLB debut since Diomedes Olivo did so in 1961, also for the Pirates, at age 41. IIRC, Satchel Paige holds the MLB record at 42.
