Yanks Drop Another

04/08/2007

Carl Pavano’s return to the Yankees after more than a year was overshadowed by the opposing pitcher, Orioles youngster Daniel Cabrera. Pavano returned after missing 2006 with various injuries, and pitched exceptionally well. Carl went eight very strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He also struck out four without walking anyone. However, Cabrera was simply incredible. He pitched eight innings as well, shutting out the Bombers vaunted lineup while allowing just two measly singles. He struck out eight Yankees, while walking four. While Pavano left the pitcher’s duel down 1-0, the Yankee bullpen again allowed their opponent to push the game out of reach. Luis Vizcaino came in for the 9th inning, and allowed two more runs. His 2007 start with the Yankees is certainly not what he or the Yanks had imagined when he came over from the Diamondbacks this off-season. The Yankees dropped to .500, with a record of 2-2, with the loss. After the game, GM Brett Hayes had this to say on the bullpen. “Obviously it’s rough to see the performances so far, but it is still the first week in April guys, cut them some slack. Everyone is still getting back into the groove of things; I think we’ll be fine.” Hayes had better hope so, as the Yankee faithful grow restless with mediocrity very, very quickly.

Yankees – 0 - 3 - 0
Orioles – 3 - 8 - 0

WP: Daniel Cabrera (1-0)
LP: Carl Pavano (0-1)

Wright Shines in Return to the Bronx

04/09/2007

Jaret Wright returned to Yankee stadium yesterday. However, he was in the opposing dugout, as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. He was also on the mound as the O’s starting pitcher, and out-pitched Japanese import Kei Igawa by a landslide to earn the win in yesterday’s game. Wright went eight very strong innings, walking just one en route to allowing one earned. His counterpart, Kei Igawa, did not impress in his first start for the Yanks after signing a big deal in the off-season. Igawa went five and a third innings, allowing six earned runs while walking four. He did, however, settle down after a rough first inning in which he allowed five of the six runs. But, he’ll need to work on his control and location if he wants to be successful in this league. The Bronx bullpen bounced back from its recent troubles, holding Baltimore to just one earned over the final 3.2 innings, but it was far too late. Wright, who earned player of the game honors, never gave the Yanks a chance, holding the top third of the lineup in Damon, Jeter, and Abreu, hitless. Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff each drove in a pair of runs for the O’s, providing more than enough offense to put their team past the Yanks last night.

The Yankees finish off the three game series with Baltimore tomorrow night in the Bronx, as they’ll pitch Chien-Ming Wang against Erik Badard. Wang is 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA on the season, while Bedard did not receive a decision in his first start, with a 7.11 ERA.

Yankees – 1 - 8 - 1
Orioles – 8 - 11 - 1

WP: Jaret Wright (1-0)
LP: Kei Igawa (0-1)

Williams bails out Rivera in Exciting Fashion

04/10/2007

There was much speculation before the season, regarding the plans that new GM Brett Hayes had for Yankee legend Bernie Williams. Barely a week into the new season, those plans are already starting to come out. Williams laid down a perfect bunt on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the 9th inning in last night’s ballgame to give the Yankees a 7-6 victory over the visiting Orioles. Williams pinch-hit for slugger Jason Giambi with one down in the ninth, and placed the first pitch he saw down the third base line. Bobby Abreu hustled down the line and slid under the tag from O’s catcher Ramon Hernandez to score the game winning run.

Mariano Rivera allowed the drama of the bottom of the 9th to unfold by blowing the save in the top of the inning, allowing a couple of base hits along with a sacrifice to tie the game at six. Chien-Ming Wang pitched eight innings for the Bombers, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits. He was in position for the win before the blown save by Rivera, who earned the win thanks to Williams’ clutch bunt. Johnny Damon was 3-5 for New York, earning player of the game honors. He scored a run and stole a base, helping ignite the Yank’s offense yesterday. Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora had three hits a piece for the Orioles, who out-hit the Yankees but just couldn’t stop the Bombers from crossing the plate. With the win, New York avoids the sweep, and will be traveling to Toronto after an off-day tomorrow to begin a three game set.

Yankees – 7 - 9 - 0
Orioles – 6 - 13 - 1

Yankees Let Bats Do the Talking

04/12/2007

After failing to hit the ball well for the majority of the series with the Baltimore Orioles, then exploding for seven runs in the final game, fans were left to wonder which Yankee offense would show up when the team traveled to Toronto last night to face the Blue Jays. Well, fourteen hits and ten runs later, we have our definite answer. The Yankee offense came in bunches, as they scored in just three innings to get their ten runs. The main man for New York was Jason Giambi, who went 3-4 with three RBIs on a bases clearing double in the eighth inning. The double came after Toronto had closed the gap to 6-5 and appeared to have seized momentum. For his efforts, Giambi earned player of the game honors. Damon, Jeter, ARod and Cano all contributed two hits a piece and combined for five New York runs and four RBIs.

Mike Mussina pitched seven innings, and had decent stuff, if not overly impressive. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits, walking two. Luiz Vizcaino came in for the final two innings to finish off the game, holding Toronto scoreless. For the Blue Jays, starter Burnett allowed six runs in just 5.2 innings, getting him the early exit. Relievers Brian Sweeney and Jason Frasor allowed a pair of runs a piece, as they were unable to stop the bleeding. Rightfielder John-Ford Griffin had three hits, including a homerun, for the home team, providing most of their offense. On this night, however, it was not enough, as the Bombers won 10-5. New York improved to 4-3 on the season, and will face Roy Halladay tomorrow night in the second game of the three game set.

Yankees – 10 - 14 - 0
Blue Jays - 5 - 10 - 1

LP: AJ Burnett (0-1)
