Ooooooookay...according to Hawk & DJ, The Sox and Javier Vazquez are close to a deal which would get Javy $35 million over 3 years.

Sure, that sounds awful. But I'd rather have Vazques at $11.3 million a year than Gil Meche for $11 million...

edit: Confirmed at 3 years, $34.5 million.

Sounds pretty high for someone who can barely get a quality start, or heck, even out of the 5th inning.

What are the salaries for the rest of our rotation?

Yeah, we're pretty much talking Ted Lilly money!

Let's see:

Buehrle - $9.5 million, FA after this year (at this point, anyways)
Contreras - $9 million this year, $10 million in 2008 & 2009.
Garland - $10 million this year, $12 million in 2008.
Whoever the #5 guy is - league minimum, I'd assume.

The bullpen is the cheap part:

Aardsma - league minimum, arbitration eligible in 2009.
Jenks - league minimum, arbitration eligible in 2009.
MacDougal - $1.5 million, $1.95 mil in 2008, $2.65 mil in 2009 - I think there's an option/buyout in 2010.
Thornton - $500k, arbitration eligible next year.
Other bullpen guys would be league minimum, AFAIK.

Geez.. So he's the highest paid pitcher on our roster, Id assume second highest paid player to Paulie's $15k?

Makes no sense. We should be resigning #56 instead of throwing money at this guy.

Paulie is "only" getting $12 million. Thome's the highest paid Sox, getting $14 this year and next (although I think the Phils are picking up part of that).

As far as re-signing Buehrle...

Williams reiterated his preference for not offering contracts of more than three years. Buehrle, who can become a free agent after 2007, rejected a three-year extension for $30 million in July that essentially amounted to picking up his 2007 option, two more years and a $10.5 million club option with a buyout for 2010.

Well, after some (possibly) erroneous reports that the Sox and Buehrle were talking, there is now word that the Sox may be re-acquiring Aaron Rowand in a deal that would involve sending "middle-relief help, including Boone Logan" to Philadelphia.

If that happens, I'm just going to get dizzy thinking about the trading carousel. It would wind up being, essentially, trading some a SP prospect and a MR or two for Jim Thome.

Nice outing by the ex-Sox Parque yesterday.

J Parque (L, 0-1) 0.2 6 6 6 0 1 22.09

Wonder what his excuse is this time.

His margarine for error looks pretty slim.

It can't be any worse than his senior picture!

I love getting to finally use that.

dola,

A few ST notes:

Gavin Floyd continutes to send himself to Charlotte, while John Danks looked pretty darn good against the Rangers...

Scott "Ow, My Groin!" Podsednik is back ahead of schedule, and is scheduled to appear in Wednesdays B game against the Rockies.

Aaron Rowand is still a Phillie.

Driving around town today, I was behind a minivan that had a Sox license plate holder surrounding a license plate that read "CUBS LUZ". Thanks for making the rest of us look bad, pal.

Hmm. Looks like the Garcia trade may have been a blessing in disguise for the Sox:

http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/ne...7-1318358.html

Quote:
Freddy Garcia left his start Wednesday night against Toronto after one inning with tightness in right biceps.

...

With his fastball topping at just 85 mph, Garcia was pounded for three runs on five hits and a walk in his only inning. He threw 32 pitches, only 20 for strikes.

Garcia, who has a 11.42 spring ERA, remained in the dugout when the Phils hit in the second inning, then went to the clubhouse with a minor-league trainer and then back to nearby Clearwater to visit with team trainer Scott Sheridan.

Enjoy Gavin Floyd!

I'm not too happy about the Garcia news. Ugh.

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to enjoy Gavin Floyd much.

Don't worry about Freddy, he always has a hard time getting up for "meaningless" games anyways.

...at least I won't have to enjoy Gavin Floyd as the 5th starter, as that job has been given to John Danks:

Oh, and Uribe and Toby Hall both got hurt today, but neither are considered serious.
