This is absurd. No one who doesn't care about soccer now is going to pay attention and the people who do care about soccer know Beckham is a fraud. Hell, I don't care about soccer and I know Beckham is a fraud. I know for damn sure he's not worth $250M over 5 years in the US.

Duh! He's the fifth most capped England player of all time, has twice been the runner-up in the FIFA World Player of the Year Award in 1999 and 2001, and in addition to being the only Englishman to score in three different World Cups, is also only the fifth player in World Cup history to score twice from direct free kicks. Exactly... especially when ESPN radio also reported MLS team salary caps are $2 million. How can this be anything but a disaster when you got a guy making 50k a year in the same locker room with someone making 50m?

I know a large part of that contract is buying his marketing rights. He's getting paid 250 million not just to play soccer but to be a spokesman and symbol of the MLS. I see it as a good thing. He's going to put a few extra butts in the seats and will likely give the MLS some international attention. This move already has people talking and that is just what the MLS needs. Who knows maybe a few more aging stars will come over.

Beckham may not be the player he once was, but there was a time when he was one of the greats. He may be overrated now but i don't see how he's a fraud.

My impression is that his skills have declined greatly and are continuing to do so. If they were signing someone of Pele's skill and demeanor that would perhaps make sense in that it brings added legitimacy to MLS. As it is, the league is still second or third rate and has reinforced that impression by spending an amount more than the combined league salary caps on a single player who is not considered to be among the "best of the best". What does that sort of cash layout add to MLS that wouldn't have been better spent on a more even-keeled approach?

MLS has been the portrait of "even-keeled" for most of its existence. With all of the soccer specific stadiums being built/completed, and the new TV deal, it's been reported that ALL teams will be profitable by 2010. As bottom line oriented as MLS is, I'm guessing a lot of the salary is gonna be absorbed by someone other than the league.

FOX Soccer Channel's Nick Webster said on Sky Sports News that adidas would be picking up a share of the contract. Don't know if that's true or not.
Anyway the league will only pick up the salary maximum, with AEG and maybe adidas paying the rest.

I know nothing of Soccer, but I do know who this guy is. He is the ONLY soccer player who I know other than Pele (and that's because of the movie "Kicking and Screaming").

I think the signing did EXACTLY what it was supposed to do.

That $1 mil a week includes all the endorsements with Adidas and such which are the vast majority of his deal. From what I've heard his per year salary will be somewhere in the lines of 5-10 mil per year which translates to $100k-200k per week. At 200k per week he'd be making slightly less than he currently is at Real Madrid where I think his pay is somewhere around 220-240k per week.

It doesn't matter if Beckham is a decent player or not. The fact is, he's currently the most famous soccer player in the world and for him to be coming to play in the US is a big deal. I don't think it's going to help the MLS this year or even next year, but down the road this is going to be a monumental day in the development of the league.

I doubt Beckham is the most famous player in the world. Also, he is terribly overrated, his recent performance is just below average.

I'd say he is the most famous locally as he, along with Adeu, are the only two present soccer players the average American could name.
