I know I don't post much, but at the risk of sound gay, I love you guys. Nothing like helping a guy wake up then reading some one liners that keep me laughing for minutes.

Good explaination Henry about the reasons for not spending a lot of resources on what appears like a fairly rare mix of video cards and monitors. I must say however that I am dissapointed you published the fact I sometimes wear a skirt when surfing the net - as I explained to Dokken, it's strictly a comfort thing .

Unfortunately, the explanation of the screen resolution problem I wrote last year got lost when the original board went down. Without trying to write all that again, for what it's worth, let me offer this.

1st: Not all 800x600 machines have a problem. It depends entirely of the way the drivers were written, when they were written, and how that compares to the environment Markus is developing in. To expect Markus to buy/lease all the combinations necessary to do effective testing is simply too much. Large corporations (3DO, etc) have the resources to do that.

2nd: Looking at resolutions, 800x600 is truly on it's way out - in favor of 1024x768 and above. To provide some justification of this, I looked at the counter details from those that visit my website (BigCityBaseball) and found the following;

Since December 1st 2001 :

1600x1200 55 visitors
1280x1024 932 visitors
1152x864 204 visitors
1024x768 3,586 visitors
800x600 1,265 visitors
640x480 32 visitors
"other" 229 visitors

As you can see, 800x600 represents about 20% of the total - and considering that most of my visitors are "probably" OOTP owners, I would think many of those 800x600 individuals can use OOTP just fine.

The major thing that can be summarized from the numbers, however, is that a full 75% of this group is already at 1024x768 or higher.

But how many of them are like me, who normally run in 800x600, but turn it to 1024x768 for OOTP and play the damn thing so much that it's a hassle to turn it back? Or who are visiting your site while currently PLAYING OOTP?

To say that because 75% of your visitors are in that resolution, they must favor it over 800x600 isn't really accurate, because you don't know the underlying circumstances. It's like the chicken and the egg...are they in 1024x768 because they prefer it, or because the game dictates that they be so?

I, too, have to do this. It's not a huge bother, and I wouldn't want the process of fixing it to take away development resources from improving other aspects of the game. Nevertheless, it should be recognized that 800x600 users are not as small in number as some may think.

Cool

Glen2006 & Josh,

Just to clarify, I know my stats aren't scientific since they only include the visitors to BCB, but was simply trying to point out a trend.

Actually though, there's a big difference between NOT being able to run the game in 800x600 and having to switch back and forth. My comments were really directed to those who felt Markus might be ignoring them that simply couldn't run the game since 800x600 was the highest resolution they had.

This does lead me to a question, however... why would you switch into 1024x768 only to play the game ? If you have the higher resolution - why wouldn't you stay there all the time ?

Henry -- because I'm nearsighted, primarily It's easier on my eyes to run it at 800x600, even with my glasses on.

And all *I'm* saying is that it hardly qualifies as a trend unless you can prove conclusively that people are in 1072x768 because they *want* to be, as opposed to there because they need to be for a certain game and are too damn lazy to switch back, hehe.

For me, at least, I don't care to reboot everytime I switch resolutions just to get everything properly resolved on the screen when going back and forth between the two, but I also don't like having things be out of whack in 800x600 when I manually force the transition. So what do I do? I stay in the higher resolution, more because I'm loath to do anything more than absolutely necessary to play the game than anything else.

If it would run properly in 800x600 on my computer, you'd not hear a peep out of me.

I don't mean to coat-tail on your post again, Josh -- but yes, I, too, find it a lot easier on my eyes to run my display at 800x600. Luckily, I don't need to restart my computer for the resolution switches to take effect, and everything on the screen stays orderly. Having said that, I would be appreciative if this issue could get addressed.

Why.....just why did you have to put that picture in our heads?

As for me......with STB, I'm able to run the game in both 800x600 (in full screen mode), but I have to switch over to 1024x768 to run it in window mode. It's not too much of a hassle for me though. No biggie.
