MWL - 1900 Season Preview
1900 MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 9/1/00) 1900 AMATEUR ROOKIE DRAFT Round 1: Round 1, Pick 1 - Mazatlan Black Hawks: SP Neto Denogean (22yo/Mexico) Round 1, Pick 2 - Navojoa Chameleons: CF Estefan Romero (19yo/Mexico) Round 1, Pick 3 - Hermosillo Victorians: MR Lazaro Apadoca (18yo/Mexico) Round 1, Pick 4 - Obregon Orangemen: 3B Alejandro Reyrs (19yo/Nicaragua) Round 1, Pick 5 - Guasave Hippies: MR Montay Sanfiel (23yo/Mexico) Round 1, Pick 6 - Culiacan Moths: SP Tony Granio (18yo/Mexico) Round 1, Pick 7 - Mexicali Leopards: 2B Cisco Gualderamo (20yo/Mexico) Round 1, Pick 8 - Mochis Wranglers: SS Jose Alvero (19yo/Mexico) Other Notable Picks: none 1900 Supplemental Disbursement Draft (The following historical players, who do not import in the 1901 draft were randomly placed on the following teams, all signed to 3 year contracts) Mochis Wranglers: C Ed McFarland (27yo/USA) Mexicali Leopards: 1B John Anderson (27yo/Norway) Culiacan Moths: 2B Claude Ritchey (27yo/USA) Guasave Hippies: 3B Harry Wolverton (27yo/USA) Obregon Orangemen: SS George Davis (31yo/USA) Hermosillo Victorians: LF Jimmy Sheckard (22yo/Parts Unknown) Navojoa Chameleons: CF Chick Stahl (28yo/USA) Mazatlan Black Hawks: RF Danny Green (24yo/USA) Mochis Wranglers: SP Bill Dineen (25yo/USA) Mexicali Leopards: SP Al Orth (29yo/USA) Culiacan Moths: SP Vic Willis (25yo/USA) LEAGUE PREVIEW Code:
1899 STANDINGS Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Culiacan Moths 0 0 .000 - 0-0 Guasave Hippies 0 0 .000 - 0-0 Hermosillo Victorians 0 0 .000 - 0-0 Mazatlan Black Hawks 0 0 .000 - 0-0 Mexicali Leopards 0 0 .000 - 0-0 Mochis Wranglers 0 0 .000 - 0-0 Navojoa Chameleons 0 0 .000 - 0-0 Obregon Orangemen 0 0 .000 - 0-0 - The Moths benefited from 2 historical supplemental players, and thus have to be considered one of the favorites in the MWL. With SS Claude Ritchey batting 3rd, behind 2 of the more powerful hitters in Mexico (LF Mike Conder/RF Jaime Gomez) the middle of their lineup should provide plenty of offense. On the hill, joining SP Vic Willis (the only pitcher in Mexico with a 20 movement/20 control) is 26yo Danny Gillum, the best non-historical SP in the league. Closer Norberto Zula is one of the best in the league as well and should be money in closing out his teams wins. Pitcher To Watch: SP Al Orth (MEX) - Orth gets the nod over Dineen & Willis as the pitcher to watch simply due to his experience. At 29, he has experience in other major leagues around baseball, and has a career 92-69 record in those leagues. With great enduarance, expect Orth to pitch deep everytime he takes the hill. Then there's his hitting. With no DH in the Mexico league, pitchers will tend to slow down innings when it gets to the bottom of the order. Except in Orth's case. With a 12/20 in contact, he could be a .300 hitting pitcher, which will only help him on the mound with run support. He should contend for the MWL Cy Young award. Hitter To Watch: SS Jimmy Sheckard (HERM) - An outfielder by trade, Sheckard will be moved to SS with Hermosillo to allow them to get the better bats, in the OF, in the lineup. With a league best 20/20 in contact, and playing against the opposition he will face, Sheckard has a chance at hitting .500, let alone .400. But the 22 year old's skills don't end there. With a 7/20 in HR power, he should hit for a decent amount of power and with a devasting 20/20 speed, anytime he's on base, he's a threat to run. Expect him to be on many of the league's leaderboards at the end of the year. Newcomer To Watch: CF Estefan Romero (NAV) - The 2nd overall pick in the draft has the makings to be the best of the draft. A 5 tool player, the 19 yo High Schooler is a long shot to see any time on the active roster this year. However Romero looks to be a #3 hitter down the road with avg contact and very good power and speed. His eye is a bit suspect, but that is sure to develop as he gets older, and with a vet star like Chick Stahl in CF to tudor him, Romero will have every opportunity to become a star in Mexico.

In both the East & the West we had multiple teams vieing for playoff spots. The East was especially close and came down to the last games of the season. Idaho Falls and Missoula played each other in the afternoon and with Idaho winning 6-1, they needed help from Orem, the worst team in the league, to defeat Ogden. Nothing happening there, with Ogden jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd and winning the game, and division, 4-2. The West also had 4 teams alive heading into the final weekend, but series losses by Aberdeen and Brooklyn to Jupiter and Yakima elimated them. With Vancouver winning the 1st 2 in a set vs. Eugene, and Everett also taking the 1st 2 vs Tri City, the division race was over before the final games, but Everett got the nice reward of clinching the Wild Card spot. Only the Central was decided early as Hickory clinched with a few games left, but it looks closer as they dropped their last 4 of the season. However Delmarva and Hagerstown both were still alive for the Wildcard so they still had something to play for. In the West, Lakewood, Asheville and Lake County were battling all year long, often trading the division lead for games at a time. However, in the end, the Blueclaws were able to clinch with a season ending series sweep of West Virginia. Auburn and Batavia were battling for the East pennant and also for the wildcard spots. At the end, they both were happy. Auburn beat Batavia 2 out of 3 to close out the year giving them the division, and Batavia sent Thank You baskets of fruits and chocolate to division mates Husdon Valley and Williamsport, both took 2 out of 3 from the other teams in the wildcard hunt. 1900 PLAYOFFS WILDCARD: In the Washington League, both series went the distance as Vancouver beat division mate Everett 2-1 and Ogden upset Boise 2-1 to move on to the League Championship to face the Canadians. The Lincoln league was a little less dramatic as the East reigned supreme with both Auburn and Batavia sweeping their series vs. Lakewood & Hickory respectively. LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: The upsets continued for both Ogden and Batavia as both teams won their best of 5 series 3-0 despite being the underdog and road teams. However the games themselves were quite different. Ogden beat Vancouver in 1 run games all 3 times, including a 11 inning 2-1 classic in game 2 inwhich team offensive leader LF Fernando Perez hit a GW homer, and susequently was named series MVP. Batavia did it with all blowouts over the Doubledays, outscoring them 17-4 in the series. CF Luis Herradon was named series MVP as he drove in 8 of the team's 17 runs in the series, including 2 homeruns, 1 being a grand salami. ROOKIE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: Simply a classic. The teams traded games for the entire series, winning, losing, winning, losing, etc. In the end, the team with the worst record of all 8 playoff teams was crowned the champs and the Ogden Raptors won the first Rookie League Championship trophy on the road. Even game 7 was a thriller with the score tied 2-2 after 7 innings. Ogden would go on to score 2 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to take the clincher 5-2. In the feel good story of the playoffs, SP Alanzo Belloso won the Championship MVP. You might remember him as being the WL East's Spotlight pitcher at the midway point. Injuries really curtailed his 2nd half, but he got healthy a week before the playoffs started and in the Championship he went 2-0 in 2 GS, pitching 15 innings and only giving up 3 runs. He also threw a CG shutout in game 1 and won game 5 despite giving up 3 runs in 6 innings of work. Code:

While he was in the rookie league, he led his Boise team to the 2nd best record in the Washington League and they were able to clinch the division title soon after he was called up. He had an amazing 2nd half of the year, as he wasn't leading any category at the midway point. At only 18 yo, he is yet to reach his full potential, but still figures to be the everyday LF for the Boston Red Sox next season. CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Jeronimo Precichi (Billings Mustangs) - 17yo / USA - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 23 g - 23 gs - 14-6 rec - 0 sv - 2.28 era - 193.0 ip - 80 bb - 118 k - 1.13 whip - Career Stats: 23 g - 23 gs - 14-6 rec - 0 sv - 2.28 era - 193.0 ip - 80 bb - 118 k - 1.13 whip (minors) - Overview: Despite playing for a team that finished 10 games below .500, Precichi tied for the WL lead in wins, and contributed to winning 1/3 of all his team's games on the season. Thought around the IRL is the reason why Jerenimo won the award was because the more deserving nominees all were promoted to the majors, where as he spent the entire season in the rookie league. Nevertheless, he was the best pitcher in the league after the All-Star break, making 10 of his starts in July/August and going 8-1 with a 0.86 era over those 10 games. This 17 yo isn't a sure bet to make the Baltimore Orioles roster next year, so he might have a chance to defend his title. Even so, he still led all of the IRL in Slugging, OPS and Runs Created and led the Lincoln League in Batting Avg & VORP. He got little help from his teammated though, as his WV Power finished in dead last in their division. Even though Reid is only 20 yo, he actually put up better numbers in his promotion to the Cardinals and will surely be their starting 2b next year, as well as an All-Star candidate in his 1st full year. With ratins of 16/20 in contact, 11/20 in power and 10/20, 8/20 in eye/discipline, and not even reaching his full potential, Reid looks like he is a star in the making. CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Bill Lane (Hickory Crawdads) - 26yo / USA - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 20-8 rec - 0 sv - 2.15 era - 272.0 ip - 54 bb - 236 k - 0.96 whip - Career Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 20-8 rec - 0 sv - 2.15 era - 272.0 ip - 54 bb - 236 k - 0.96 whip (minors) - Overview: At 26yo, Lane is far from a hotshot prospect, and never got the call up to Toronto this season, which allowed him to put up the best stats, by far, of any pitcher in the IRL. Leading the entire league in Wins, GS, IP, VORP & Strikeouts, Lane was the easy choice as the LL Cy Young winner. His ratings are not quite that of a MLB pitcher, and with him being a free agent this off-season, there is a chance he might sign on with the Japan or Mexico league. If not, he should be back dominating in the IRL. Ironically enough, at the midway point Fukuoka was up by 2 games, and both teams went identical 33-34 the 2nd half, both under .500, but still enough to finish as the top 2 teams in the league. The Hawks clinched the division with 3 games left after a series sweep of the Lions. They went up 2-0 with the first games on their home field and never looked back despite the Dragon winning games 5 & 6 to push it to the decisive game 7. While not ranking as the league's most winningest pitcher or best ERA, he had the best combo of winning % and era of all the Cy Young candidates. He combined with teammate Yano to form the best 1-2 SP punch in the Pacific League despite finishing 7 games out of the playoffs. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - CF Morihiro Katagiri (Chiba Lotte Marines) - 21yo / Japan - *** ROY Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 132 g - 513 ab - .343 avg - 13 hr - 79 rbi - 102 r - 37 sb - .917 ops - Career Stats: 132 g - 513 ab - .343 avg - 13 hr - 79 rbi - 102 r - 37 sb - .917 ops (int) - Overview: Japan's best leadoff hitter and Gold Glove Centerfielder walked away with the PL Rookie of the Year. He led the Pacific League in both batting avg and stolen bases and the young age of 21 and only expects to get better as his ratings reach their full potential. "Fly by Night" is of the fastest players in the ***, which helps him in the field in getting to many balls out in center. As an All-Star, ROY and Gold Glover all before turning 22 years old, expect a great career out of Katagiri. GOLD GLOVE AWARDS: P - Muneyaki Ueda (Nippon Fighters) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 C - Pedro Cambero (Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 1b - Shunso Sotokoba (Seibu Lions) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 2B - Matabei Takaki (Fukuoka Daiei Hawks) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 3B - Russ Hamilton (Orix Buffaloes) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 SS - Yasunobo Uenohara (Seibu Lions) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 LF - Yoshikazu Nagano (Orix Buffaloes) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 CF - Morihiro Katagiri (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 RF - Tsumemasa Tamura (Chiba Lotte Marines) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 CENTRAL LEAGUE MVP AWARD - LF Shohei Heida (Yomiuri Giants) - 32yo / Japan - *** MVP Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 146 g - 542 ab - .308 avg - 32 hr - 97 rbi - 107 r - 15 sb - .967 ops - Career Stats: 146 g - 542 ab - .308 avg - 32 hr - 97 rbi - 107 r - 15 sb - .967 ops (int) - Overview: Heida was touted in the pre-season as being the best hitter in the Central League, and at season end that was proven true as he walked away with the MVP Crown. Despite his team finishing a distant 5th in the CL, Shohei did everything he could to help his team win games. Leading his team in every major offensive category, and leading the CL in OPS, Walks and VORP, Heida showed he was the league's most dangerous hitter and probably would have produced even more if he had better hitters around him in the lineup. CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Toshiki Iida (Chunichi Dragon) - 25yo / Japan - *** CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 31 g - 31 gs - 17-5 rec - 0 sv - 3.31 era - 247.2 ip - 93 bb - 242 k - 1.22 whip - Career Stats: 31 g - 31 gs - 17-5 rec - 0 sv - 3.31 era - 247.2 ip - 93 bb - 242 k - 1.22 whip (int) - Overview: One of the driving forces of the Central League Champions, Iida was a major reason why Chunichi was the best team the 2nd half of the season. Going 9-1, including winning his last 5 decisions, to close out the regular season, Iida was the best money pitcher in baseball. Admittedly though, he had a tough post-season as he went 0-2 with over a 4.50 era in the *** Championship. Still though, the 25 yo led Central in strikeouts and his great finish to the season gave him the edge over a deep class of Cy Young caliber pitchers in the CL. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - 3b Yoshihide Watanabe (Chunichi Dragon) - 21yo / Japan - *** ROY Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 146 g - 581 ab - .296 avg - 35 hr - 113 rbi - 111 r - 1 sb - .907 ops - Career Stats: 146 g - 581 ab - .296 avg - 35 hr - 113 rbi - 111 r - 1 sb - .907 ops (int) - Overview: One of Japan's premier power hitters, the 24 yo Watanabe led the Central in HR & runs and finished in the top 5 in RBI & OPS. The long swinging lefty 3b was by far the best in Japan and still has not reached his full power potential, so he should only get better as he defends his CL league HR title next season. GOLD GLOVE AWARDS: P - Teinosuke Goto (Chunichi Dragon) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 C - Saionji Inagaki (Yakult Swallows) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 1b - Kyuwa Yasui (Yokohama Bay Stars) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 2B - Matsusuke Makiguchi (Hiroshima Toyo Carp) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 3B - Takashi Ogawa (Yakult Swallows) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 SS - Saionji Nakamura (Hanshin Tiger) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 LF - Kisho Matsushina (Hanshin Tiger) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 CF - Sen Tenno (Yakult Swallows) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1 RF - Koichi Daisen (Hiroshima Toyo Carp) - *** GOLD GLOVES: 1

Dynasty Note
Unfortunately due to a mistake on my part, the Mexican Winter League 1900 season will not be counted. The historical players I placed into the league came with their 1900 stats. Unfortunately, without thinking, I imported them into the 1900 MWL season. Therefore, before even 1 game has been played, Bill Dinneen has like 25 wins. John Anderson has like 90 RBI, etc. So pretty much all of the statistical data will be off. Therefore, rather than go back to my last backup point, since I have simmed so much in the other leagues, I am just going to "not count" the 1900 MWL season. Will it happen, yes. Will stats be accumulated, yes. But with it only being a 68 game season, I am confident it will not effect the career stats of players that much. And when doing all the updates, I will eliminate anything from the 1900 season. Sorry for the confusion and mistake to any who were interested in seeing how the winter league did in it's initial season

The only semi-race in the AL this year was for the Wildcard. The Angels finished with MLB's best record, and they, along with the other division winners (Boston & Detroit) all won their division by double digits and clinched early in September. Texas & Seattle had the only race for the Wildcard, but even that ended anti-climatically. Facing each other 6 times in the final 12 games of the season, Texas won 5 of the 6 matchups, and clinched the Wildcard rather easily, rendering the final series for each team meaningless. Code:

Atlanta ran away an hid in the East. Arizona and LA battled somewhat for the West pennant, but they finished with the 2 best records in the NL and both knew they were making the playoffs in some way or another. The Central was close most of the season, but Cincy closed out the season winning 8 of their last 10 and 4 in a row as the comfortably clinched with a 6 game lead. 1900 PLAYOFFS WILDCARD: Only the Atlanta-Cincinnati series turned out to be a dud in the 1st rd, as the Braves easily swept away the Reds to advance to the League Championship. The would wind up facing Arizona who beat division rivla LA 3 games to 2 in a 1st rd matchup featuring the 2 best teams in the NL during the regular season. In the AL, both series went the 5 game full distance and in each case, having game 5 at home proved to be the difference maker. Boston came back from down 2-1 to Detroit and the Angels outlasted the Rangers, both teams winning impressively in the deciding game (6-1 & 8-3 respectively). LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: Both LCS series only lasted 5 games as Boston & Atlanta beat the heavily favorited Angels & DBacks 4 games to 1. Rookie 1b Tony Hopper won the ALCS MVP, hitting a very impressive .445 in the 5 game series while driving in 4 runs. LF Dave DeWarrenne finished 2nd in the NL with 52 HRs during the regular season and showed his power in the NLCS, hitting 3 jacks in 5 games enroute to winning the series MVP for Atlanta. WORLD SERIES: The Atlanta Braves were crowned the 1st ever MLB World Series Champs after knocking off Boston 4-2 in a very so-so series. All 4 of the Braves wins were blowouts, as the outscored the Sox 17-6 in the 4 wins. Boston's 2 wins were closer, but you never really got the feeling they were in the series after Atlanta won the 1st 2 6-0 & 5-2. 21 game winner Vittorio Patino was named MVP of the World Series going 2-0 in 2 gs with a dominating 2 er in 16.1 ip including a complete game 3 hit shutout to open the series. Hitting 3rd for the AL's best team, Jorge led the team in Avg, HR, Runs & SB. He was the American League's best hitter in the 1st half, and while his batting avg tailed off a bit, his power numbers went up, and he was the right choice for AL MVP. Leading all of the majors in OB % and the AL in OPS, Vorp & BB, he was a patient hitter at the plate and when he did make contact he was hard to get out. CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Karl Holland (Boston Red Sox) - 24yo / USA - MLB CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 21-10 rec - 0 sv - 2.65 era - 248.0 ip - 58 bb - 234 k - 1.04 whip - Career Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 21-10 rec - 0 sv - 2.65 era - 248.0 ip - 58 bb - 234 k - 1.04 whip (majors) - Overview: Karl was the best pitcher on the best pitching team in baseball, the Red Sox, who represented the AL in the World Series. Leading the AL in Whip, and ranking 2nd in ERA, Wins & Vorp, it still boggles the mind how he was left off the All-Star team. Holland was also very consistent going 10-5 in the 1st half and 11-5 in the 2nd half. Karl will be one of the front runners for AL Cy Young next year, and at only 24 yo, should win a few more before his playing days are done. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD - 1b Tony Hopper (Boston Red Sox) - 21yo / USA - MLB ROY Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 162 g - 643 ab - .303 avg - 39 hr - 124 rbi - 107 r - 2 sb - .904 ops - Career Stats: 162 g - 643 ab - .303 avg - 39 hr - 124 rbi - 107 r - 2 sb - .904 ops (majors) - Overview: The ALCS MVP was honored with another award after the season, as the AL's top rookie. Tony led all MLB rookies in HR and led all AL rookies in most of the other major offensive categories including Batting Avg, Vorp, Hits, RBI and Runs Scored. The rookie 1b had a big 2nd half for the AL Champion Red Sox, hitting .334 with 19 hr & 68 rbi. He has peaked in term of ratings, topping out all his potential numbers, but if he can keep producing like this, he doesn't need to improve. GOLD GLOVE AWARDS: P - Mark Meiers (Baltimore Orioles) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 C - Jerry Blakeslee (Chicago White Sox) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 1b - Ricardo Olveada (Kansas City Royals) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 2B - Glenn Bryant (Texas Rangers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 3B - John Shaftoe (Los Angeles Angels) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 SS - Tadamichi Sugitani (Minnesota Twins) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 LF - Clay Wilson (Minnesota Twins) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 CF - Mike Rosbotham (Detroit Tigers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 RF - Frank Nichols (Toronto Blue Jays) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 NATIONAL LEAGUE MVP AWARD - 3b Incendio Ondarza (Arizona Diamondbacks) - 27yo / USA - MLB MVP Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 162 g - 600 ab - .360 avg - 48 hr - 148 rbi - 141 r - 33 sb - 1.151 ops - Career Stats: 162 g - 600 ab - .360 avg - 48 hr - 148 rbi - 141 r - 33 sb - 1.151 ops (majors) - Overview: With all due respect to Ondarza, who did have a fantastic season, his teammate Sexto Lopez was ROBBED. Lopez did fall off on his triple crown bid the 2nd half, but he still led all of the majors in Avg, Hits & RBI where as Ondarza only led in Vorp. Even in a head to head comparison, besides Vorp, the only other stat that he beat Lopez in was in Runs scored. But controversy is part of the game, and Incendio is this season's NL MVP. Will this lead to some tension between the best 1-2 hitting combo in baseball down the road? Who knows CY YOUNG AWARD - SP CJ Earp (Cincinnati Reds) - 22yo / USA - MLB CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 20-8 rec - 0 sv - 2.56 era - 274.2 ip - 22 bb - 277 k - 1.00 whip - Career Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 20-8 rec - 0 sv - 2.56 era - 274.2 ip - 22 bb - 277 k - 1.00 whip (majors) - Overview: Unlike the MVP, there was little doubt as to who was the NL's best pitcher this year. With the NL's best ERA, Vorp, K's and Whip, and a 20 game winner, Earp was the easy selection. Hist 12.5 to 1 K/BB ratio is something that is unheard of in baseball. And going 10-0 in 11 starts in August & September clinched the award for CJ. At 22 yo, the Hilo, Hawaii native should have a very bright and productive career and he will need alot of space on the mantle if he keeps putting up these kind of numbers. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD - LF Chris Muirhead (San Francisco Giants) - 22yo / USA - MLB ROY Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 162 g - 609 ab - .338 avg - 31 hr - 110 rbi - 137 r - 6 sb - 1.037 ops - Career Stats: 162 g - 609 ab - .338 avg - 31 hr - 110 rbi - 137 r - 6 sb - 1.037 ops (majors) - Overview: Where Holland of Boston led all rookies in the "power" stats, Muirhead led all in the "contact" stats. Leading all MLB rookies in Avg, OPS, Vorp, BB and Runs, Chris was an easy selection for this award. At 22 yo, he has one of the best eyes in all of baseball with a 18/20 in eye and 19/20 in discipline. Combine that with solid ratings in the tradition Contact/Power areas, and Muirhead might be a future Batting Crown winner down the road. GOLD GLOVE AWARDS: P - Frank Bradley (San Diego Padres) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 C - Yosh1toshi Higuchi (Cincinnati Reds) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 1b - Tracy Vanderveer (Colorado Rockies) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 2B - Doug Burbank (Chicago Cubs) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 3B - Len Hewlett (Washington Nationals) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 SS - Carlos Ronero (Colorado Rockies) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 LF - Steve Chetwode (Florida Marlins) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 CF - Rafael Chafuen (San Diego Padres) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 RF - Jerrold Olveda (Milwaukee Brewers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 *Note* The Gold Glove catcher for the NL/Reds 1st name is Yoshi toshi...all 1 word...however the board sees the sh it in the middle so I used the 1 instead of the i

*** - 1901 Season Preview
1901 [league redacted] LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 2/22/01) LEAGUE PREVIEW Code:
1900 STANDINGS Pacific League Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Fukuoka Daiei Hawks 84 62 .575 - 85-61 - Champs Chiba Lotte Marines 82 64 .562 2.0 77-69 Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas 77 69 .527 7.0 77-69 Nippon Fighters 69 77 .473 15.0 77-69 Seibu Lions 65 81 .445 19.0 61-85 Orix Buffaloes 61 85 .418 23.0 60-86 - Coming off a season inwhich they were the *** Champs and best team during the regular season, Fukuoka certainly didn't rest on their laurels in the off-season. Major improvements were made to the team including improving the rotation with the signing of FA SP Pascual Maynez, a 12 game winner with Yakult last season and the Supplement draft selection of Brickyard Kennedy. That improved pitching will certainly benefit from an even better offense, which returns MVP 1b Gary Wilson. Joining Wilson this year will be the sweet swinging SS Bill Keister, another supplemental draft selection, and his .314 career batting avg in prior baseball experience. Pitcher To Watch: SP Cy Young (CHI) - The Supplemental draft selection of Chiba Lotte comes in with great career stats and high expectations. With a career 334-201 record in 11 yrs of prior experience, Young is a vet who has dominated and will be trying to do the same in Japan. While his Stuff isn't great (5/20), and his arm is tired after all the innings he's pitched (11/20), the movement and control of his 4 pitches is devasting. Both at 19/20 ratings, expect Young to give up few hits and fewer walks while on the mound. Even with Takano of the Ninjas as the reigning Cy Young winner, you have to list Cy Young as the favorite to win the award named after himself. Hitter To Watch: 1b Gary Wilson (FUK) - It's tough to select anyone but the reigning MVP for the Hitter to Watch in the Pacific League. Coming off a season inwhich he led the league in RBI, Runs, Walks, OPS & Vorp and was in the top 5 in Avg & HR, why would anyone but Wilson be selected. The 25yo NJ native has exceeded his potential ratings in every category, possibly a sign he might suffer some dropoff this year, but it wasn't shown last year in his stats. With a 15/20 power rating, he is still one of the best HR hitters in Japan and when combined with his contact 11/20 and eye 15/20, expect huge numbers across the board from him again as he hels Fukuoka defend their championship. Rookie To Watch: 3B Ezequiel Burciaga (NIP) - The 23yo out of Cuba is the best hitting prospect from last year's draft. With potential ratings of 10/20 in contact and 12/20 in power, he projects as a very solid middle of the order hitter in Japan. He also has avg speed and glove and is a born team leader with a 20/20 in leadership before ever stepping foot on the field for Nippon. He is also a perfect fit for the Fighters, who are really lacking at 3b. While Burciaga is a few years away from cracking the starting lineup, he has an outside shot of making the opening day roster as a reserve, and if not, should definitely get some time on the active roster this season. Code:
1900 STANDINGS Central League Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Chunichi Dragon 82 64 .562 - 81-65 Yakult Swallows 78 68 .534 4.0 79-67 Hiroshima Toyo Carp 76 70 .521 6.0 71-75 Yokohama Bay Stars 72 74 .493 10.0 69-77 Yomiuri Giants 70 76 .479 12.0 75-71 Hanshin Tiger 60 86 .411 22.0 63-83 - Even though Yomiuri finished 12 games out in 5th place last year, the were one of the busiest teams in the off-season and look to make a splash in 1901. Returning players include CL MVP, LF Shohei Heida & 18 game winner Masamune Mifune. The major new additions to the Giants were all on the offensive side of the ball, which is where they struggled mightily last year. This year, MVP Heida will have plenty of help including Supplemental draft picks 1b Frank Chance & RF Willie Keeler and FA signings LF Kei Nishida, who will move to CF & SS Yasunobu Uenohara. These 4 new additions, plus Heida and solid hitting C Jun Kahae give the Giants the best lineup, top to bottom, in Japan. Pitcher To Watch: SP Franklin Pittman (YOK) - Pittman is the 1st MLB star to decide to come over to Japan, as the 20 game winner last year for the Seattle Mariners signed a huge 5yr/49m deal with Yokohama to be their ace. It will be interesting to see how much more dominant a pitcher will be in the *** after having a great season in the "higher" MLB. With solid ratings of 11/10/15, he is good across the board, and Pittman has a rubber arm, throwing 13 CG and 285.2 ip in his 35 starts last season. Combining with 18 game winner Momoru Yoshikawa & supplement draft pick Rube Waddell, the Bay Stars might have the best top of the rotation in the CL. Hitter To Watch: SS Nap "Larry" Lajoie (HIR) - The 27yo Rhode Island native was arguablely the best player available in the Supplemental Draft and Hiroshima was lucky enough to nab Lajoie. Pefection in a hitter is a hard thing to say, but ratings wise, Nap might just be there. 20/20 in contact, 9/20 in power, 19/20 in eye, 18/20 in speed and 20/20 at 2b, there isn't much that Nap doesn't due well. In 4 previous seasons playing baseball, all Nap has done is hit .347 while averaging 185 hits, 8 hr, 110 runs & 120 rbi. If he can duplicate those numbers in the ***...start shining up the MVP trophy and engraphing the name Nap Lajoie on the nameplate. Rookie To Watch: MR Sosh1tsu Kokawa (HAN) - While you wouldn't thing of a MR as a rookie to watch, Kokawa gets the nod in the Central League. With the best potential ratings of all the drafted pitchers, the 24yo lefty out of Japan has the talent to be an All-Star set up man or even a closer. With talents of 12/14/13 and a great pickoff move 19/20, he should be solid across the board. He doesn't throw all that hard at 88 mph, but he has 3 very solid pitches at his disposable. Hanshin has a pretty resepectable pen, so Kokawa probably won't see any time on the active roster this season, but he is nearly ready for a role in the pen, and should be a fixture by next year opening day.

MLB - 1901 Season Preview
1901 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 3/2/01) LEAGUE PREVIEW Code:
1900 STANDINGS American League Eastern Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Boston Red Sox 97 65 .599 - 101-61 New York (A) Yankees 80 82 .494 17.0 78-84 Toronto Blue Jays 77 85 .475 20.0 78-84 Baltimore Orioles 70 92 .432 27.0 79-83 Tampa Bay Devil Rays 70 92 .432 27.0 70-92 - Tough to pick against the team that won the ALCS last year, the Red Sox. While they were quiet on the FA market this off-season, they didn't lose any major players either, and really solidified the AL's already best pitching staff, adding 2 studs in the draft in Dummy Taylor & Jack Bracken, who join the already impressive staff featuring reigning AL CY Young winner Karl Holland & 18 game winner Alvar Marhez. Their lineup is anchored by AL ROY, 1b Tony Hopper who should improve on last year's .303, 39, 124 in his 2nd season. Pitcher To Watch: CL Chris "Grasshopper" Denby (TOR) - Denby had a big off-season this year and really improved alot in his ratings. He was decent last year for Toronto, going 2-4 with 35 saves in 53 g and a 3.26 era. But with a huge off-season program, his ratings are downright scary good now. At only 23 yo, The Grasshopper might be the best closer in baseball with 20/17/19 ratings and a 95 mph fastball. Look for him toe vastly improve on last season's stats and be an All-Star in the AL this season. Hitter To Watch: RF Ron Cronshaw (TB) - Coming off a season inwhich he hit .276 with 33 hr and 91 rbi, Cronshaw is looking to improve those numbers dramatically this season for Tampa Bay. At 26 yo, his ratings finally have reacher their full potential and the 16/20 contact & 19/20 power bode for much better stats this season. His biggest downfall last season might have been the strikeout with 105 in 594 ab, but with a big improvement this off-season, his eye has greatly improved which should really improve both his avg & ops. Rookie To Watch: SP Dummy Taylor (BOS) - Taylor was the 7th overall pick in the draft and looks like a sure bet star in the MLB. At 26 yo, he's older than your average rookie, and will be making the jump directly to the majors, starting the season penciled in as Boston's #4 SP. With the talented rotation he's on, he won't feel the pressure of some of his fellow rookies and that should help him succeed early on. With solid ratings now (4/20/12) and great potential (6/20/14), Dummy should be a force in the majors for a long time. Code:
1900 STANDINGS American League Central Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Detroit Tigers 94 68 .580 - 95-67 Minnesota Twins 79 83 .488 15.0 80-82 Cleveland Indians 74 88 .457 20.0 68-94 Kansas City Royals 71 91 .438 23.0 67-95 Chicago (A) White Sox 68 94 .420 26.0 68-94 - The Indians knew that had to improve their team this off-season to make up the 20 game difference between them and the Tigers and they did their best with some very keen moves. In November, they signed All-Star SS Jack "Zoom Zoom" McGowan away from Philly with a big 2 yr deal, adding his .305, 25, 109 to a lineup already featuring 2 40-hr players. Then in December, they had a great draft, giving McGowan an All-Star caliber partner at 2b in Erve Beck and adding 2 quality SPs in Snake Wiltse & Archie Stimmel, both of which will immediately crack the starting rotation. It might not be enough to make up 20 games, but it should definitely shorten the gap between them and Detroit. Pitcher To Watch: SP Mamo "The Rat" Kirop (CHA) - Kirop is the game's best "power" pitcher and reigning strikeout king with an impressive 294 to only 43 walks last year. He also went 18-10 despite a high 4.09 era, all while playing on one of the AL's worst teams. The White Sox added 2 pitchers in the draft, but The Rat is still their ace. The 36yo Lesothoan still has gaudy ratings of 16/13/17 with a 93mph fastball and 15/20 endurance depite getting up their in years. Expect another big season from Mamo, and look for him to improve in the win and era columns. Hitter To Watch: RF Joe McMurrich (DET) - McMurrich was the AL Central's player to watch last pre-season, and after a year of .312, 38 hr, 120 rbi, 110 runs, 33 sb, he is still the division's hitter to watch. At 27 yo, he has exceeded his potential ratings, especially in HR power, where his current rating of 19/20 is much higher than his potential 15/20. The AL All-Star RF will be looking to duplicate his impressive all around season and lead Detroit to the Central pennant for the 2nd straight season. Newcomer To Watch: SP Rube Foster (CHA) - The 3rd overall pick in the draft is wasting no time getting his feet wet, as he is jumping right into the fire as the White Sox #2 starting pitcher. Rube has already reached his full potential ratings at the tender age of 21, with numbers of 5/20/14. Expect him to give the pen a rest everytime he takes the hill as well with a perfect 20/20 in endurance. Foster mixes in 3 pitches with a solid 92 mph fastball and has all the makings of a 20 game winner in the bigs. Code:
1900 STANDINGS American League Western Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Los Angeles (A) Angels 105 57 .648 - 103-59 Texas Rangers 93 69 .574 12.0 86-76 Seattle Mariners 89 73 .549 16.0 95-67 Oakland Athletics 67 95 .414 38.0 70-92 - Despite a disappointing showing in the playoffs, the Angels were the best team in baseball last tear and this year's choice for the Team to Watch in the AL West. The made no moves other than the selection of HS speedy CF Chet Fibbin with the last pick in the draft, but they return their team intact from last season. That team includes reigning AL MVP, 2b Jorge Balcorta, a pair of OFs who topped 130 RBI in Trewin & Alviar, the AL leader in ERA & 18 game winner John Clinkscales & 20 game winner Jesus Garcia anchoring the staff and solid closer Maldonado ending games. All that being said, the Angels are the favorites to repeat as division champs. Pitcher To Watch: SP Ed "Meter Man" Hughes (TEX) - Hughes had a disappointing 1900 season, going 17-11 but with a high 4.32 era and 1.33 whip. Expect him to crush those numbers this season, as The Meter Man worked hard this off-season and really improved his game. With ratings of 14/18/17, he has topped out his talents and with a 94 mph fastball, he should easily get to the 20 win plateau this year and can lower his era by as much as 1.00. He struggled the first half last season, and missed making the All-Star team, so he is focused on starting strong to get that honor this year. Hitter To Watch: 2b Jorge Balcorta (ANA) - All Balcorta did last year was lead the AL with a .335 avg while becoming a 40/40 man with 42 hr & 41 sb enroute to the AL MVP. At 30 yo, his ratings might not be as high as some of the other division top hitters, but why pick against the reigning MVP when selecting a hitter to watch. With alot of protection in the lineup of the Angels, Balcorta does not have to worry about being pitched around in the 3 hole, and should be able to come close to duplicating last season's 40/40 season. Rookie To Watch: RF Socks Seybold (SEA) - Seattle might have gotten the steal of the draft as Seybold fell into their laps at #23. The Mariners have so much confidence in this 30 yo rookie that the day after selecting him they traded away AL RBI leader Victoriano Marrou because they both play RF and Seattle wanted Socks to be the man out there for them. Already slated as their cleanup hitter, Socks should hit for both a high avg and drive in plenty of runs while hitting a fair share of HR. With a 16/20 contact, 8/20 power and 15/20 speed, Socks' project numbers this season are .315 with 18 hr. And stepping in for Marrou in the cleanup spot, he already is being counted on to drive in 120+. Code:
1900 STANDINGS National League Eastern Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Atlanta Braves 96 66 .593 - 94-68 - Champs New York (N) Mets 79 83 .488 17.0 83-79 Washington Nationals 78 84 .481 18.0 79-83 Florida Marlins 77 85 .475 19.0 73-89 Philadelphia Phillies 60 102 .370 36.0 68-94 - It's tough for the World Series champs to improve their team in the off-season...they already are the League Champs. But the Braves certainly did that when they gave All-Star 2b George Boutte the richest contract in baseball, signing him to a 5 yr/80.5 mil contract away from the Pirates. Boutte was the Braves only major addition in the off-season, but adding his .325, 44 hr, 118 rbi to a lineup featuring .318, 52 hr, 133 rbi Dave DeWarrenne & .315, 35 hr, 149 rbi Jesus Manririques give Atlanta the best 3-4-5 in baseball and a good chance to repeat as WS Champs. Pitcher To Watch: SP Mike Ohler (NYM) - Ohler finished last year with a 21-8 record, 2.62 era, 1.09 whip & 230 k in 234.0 ip. And he's going to get MUCH better. At 24 yo, he has finally reached his full potential ratings of 15/15/15, making Ohler one of the most evenly dominating pitchers in the majors. Only topping out at 88 mph doesn't hurt the tall righty because he throws all 3 of his pitches in any count. Last year he won over 25% of the Mets total games, so NY needs to get him some more help, but everytime Ohler takes the mound, they expect to win. Hitter To Watch: 3b George Boutte (ATL) - As stated above, Boutte signed the biggest contract in MLB this off-season and moved to 3b in the process (hmmm...AROD?). On the Pirates last year, he produced very big stats...but was the biggest threat in their lineup. This year, batting inbetween 2 superstars who had monster years of their own last year, Boutte will be more comfortable and should produce even bigger numbers himself. Improving on .325, 44 hr, 118 rbi, 129 runs will be difficult...but with Atlanta dishing out over $16 million a year for George, they are expecting them to improve. Rookie To Watch: SP Christy "Big Six" Mathewson (PHIL) - Christy was the easy 1st choice in the draft by baseball's worst team last year. He immediately became the face of the Philly franchise. The 20yo youngster is a homegrown boy out of Factoryville, PA. His ratings are stellar even at his young age (9/20/14). Scouts say "he could be one of the greatest pitchers of all-time" about him. Nothing like pressure. But Big Six is ready for the challenge and will take the ball on opening day, trying to turn around the Phillies. Code:

But then the Pirates front office got on the phone and got busy. Yes, they lost Boutte. But they added alot. Starting with the FA signings of CF Greg Tripp (.276, 16 hr, 39 sb, 125 runs) & 3B Feliciano Delosangeles (.310, 22 hr, 102 rbi). Then the draft, picking up 3B Sammy Strang (who will move Delosangeles to 2b) & 1B Kitty Bransfield, they added 4 everyday starters for 1. Pitching will be the big question as they lack any real stars on the hill, but they might have added just enough to overcome last year's 6 game gap. Pitcher To Watch: SP CJ "Madman" Earp (CIN) - The NL Cy Young winner last year finished 20-8 with an NL best 2.56 era. His most impressive stat line though was a 277 k/22 bb ratio. And he got better. At 23 yo, his control has improved from a 19 to 20 rating, making it very concievable that he could improve on his K to BB ratio...watch out NL Central! He was rewarded for his great season last year with a 2 yr/15 m extension and he plans on giving the Reds every penny worth on their investment. Hitter To Watch: LF Xavier Delaluz (CIN) - The 24yo native of El Salvador is one of the games premier contact hitters. Last year was a bit disappointing, hitting .304 with 28 hr & 98 rbi, but Xavier is sure to improve on those numbers if his ratings are any indication. 18/20 in contact, 14/20 in power and 15/20 in eye, plus 12/20 in speed, he is an ideal #3 linedrive hitter who will hit his 20-30 hr. The Reds are built around pitching, that's how they won the Central last year, but with Delaluz only 24yo, their offense might soon be as potent making them an even more dangerous club. Rookie To Watch: C Roger "The Duke of Tralee" Bresnahan (CHN) - Roger was the 8th overall pick in the draft, possibly a stretch, but finding a catcher with his potential is difficult in baseball. Currently projected to start the season in the minors at Orem, it won't be long til he's starting behind the plate at Wrigley for the Cubs. With a 20,20 defensive rating and arm, he is a gold glove catcher in the making. He also has the potential to be an above avg hitter with a 14/20 contact and 17/20 eye, although he lacks any real HR power. At only 21 yo, a start in the minors might be for the best, but expect to see "The Duke" at the NL All-Star game in the near future. Code:
1900 STANDINGS National League Western Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Arizona Diamondbacks 104 58 .642 - 100-62 Los Angeles (N) Dodgers 98 64 .605 6.0 91-71 San Francisco Giants 84 78 .519 20.0 82-80 Colorado Rockies 83 79 .512 21.0 82-80 San Diego Padres 70 92 .432 34.0 74-88 - Arizona finished with the best record in the NL and return the team intact with a few additions. The 1-2 MVP dualing 3b Incendio Ondarza/1b Sexto Lopez return to the heart of the lineup. Joining them will be SS/3b leadoff man, Martin Hobden, who was obtained in a trade w/ Seattle in a basica sign and deal of 1b Jeremias Arrisola. Their only other major off-season moves came via the draft, where they used their 1st 3 picks on slugging HS outfielders, showing their big preference for hitting over pitching, which is still the major concern in the desert. But their lack of quality pitchers didn't stop them from winning 104 last year, and shouldn't this year either. Pitcher To Watch: SP John Danford (LA) - Teammate Bembe Garcia won 23, Cincy CJ Earp won the CY Young...Danford might be best of the bunch. The 21 yo hard thrower has reached his peak and is sure to improve on last year's 19-9, 2.80 era, 266 k in 263.1 ip season. 14/14/17 ratings, he is a control pitcher at heart, but a 95 mph heater makes hitters think otherwise. The Dodgers are high enough on him that they are giving him the ball on opening day over the 23 game winner Garcia...that should tell you all you need to know about Danford. Hitter To Watch: 1b Sexto Lopez (ARIZ) - The NL West is not happy. At 21 yo, Lopez led the league in avg (.378) & rbi (171) and added in 48 hr & 132 runs and was in the hunt for the NL triple crown thru August. And then the MLB handed his teammate Ondarza the MVP award, essentially giving Lopez a chip on his shoulder and wanting to improve on last year's stats so there's no doubt on who's the MVP in 1901. 17/20 in contact, 18/20 in power, 15/20 in eye, Lopez is the complete package at the plate, and now 22 yo, he is still getting better. Rookie To Watch: SP Sugimoto "Blitz" Hino (SD) - A shock at #6, the Padres took the unknown 22yo Japanese import over such known pitchers as Dummy Taylor, Case Patten, Roy Patterson & Mal Eason, as well as many others. Were they foolish, or geniuses? Moto will get the ball on opening day for the Padres and is maxed out already at 22yo in his ratings (11/16/12). He doesn't have the control or movement of the more-known draft picks, but his has far better stuff...so it will be interesting to see how the different type of pitchers produce. Blitz could either turn out to be the first major bust in the 1st amateur draft, or SD could turn out smelling like roses if he is as good as they think.

IRL - 1901 Season Preview
1901 INTERNATIONAL ROOKIE LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
(Report Date - 4/20/01) LEAGUE PREVIEW Code:
1900 STANDINGS Washington League East Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Ogden Raptors 52 48 .520 - 58-42 - Champs Idaho Falls Chukers 51 49 .510 1.0 43-57 Missoula Osprey 50 50 .500 2.0 52-48 Billings Mustangs 45 55 .450 7.0 42-58 Orem Owlz 40 60 .400 12.0 42-58 - Missoula is the minor league team of the Chicago White Sox, who had a very good and deep rookie draft, thus giving the Osprey the nod as the team to watch in the WL East. Their top players are all on the offensive side of the ball, including a pair of corner OFs with MLB talent. RF Louis Gagnon had a so-so year last year, hitting .250 with 10 hr in 76 games and LF Fred Crolius was selected by Baltimore in the 9th rd of the draft but waived and claimed by Chicago. After a good improvement in the off-season, he is the team's leadoff hitter with 15/20 speed and a potential of 12/20 contact. Missoula only finished 2 games off the pace of Champions Ogden and have made enough improvement to overtake them in 1901. Pitcher To Watch: SP Barney McFadden (BIL) - McFadden was a 6th rd pick of Baltimore in the 1900 draft and he will start the season as the opening day starter for Billings. The 24yo projects to a solid MLB pitcher, who has potential ratings of 4/20/12, a very dominant movement & control pitcher. His endurance is only 11/20, something that will need to improve to be a ML starter, but a season in the IRL should help improve that, as well as his stuff. Hitter To Watch: C Ed Hallworth (OREM) - The 27yo Hallworth is a 4th rd draft pick of the Cubs and will be batting cleanup for the Owlz in his first season. At 27, he is not your ordinary rookie, and his ratings portray that as he has already reached his full potential. He should dominate in the IRL however with a 12/20 in contact and 8/20 in power, one of the best combos of all the hitters in the league. He is also a very good defensive catcher. The Cubs are deep at the C position, so he might be good trade bait for them later in the year. Code:
1900 STANDINGS Washington League Central Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Boise Hawks 59 41 .590 - 58-42 Jupiter Hammerheads 48 52 .480 11.0 46-54 Tri City Valley Cats 45 55 .450 14.0 44-56 Eugene Emeralds 40 60 .400 19.0 41-59 Yakima Bears 40 60 .400 19.0 46-54 - Tough to pick against a team that won it's division by 11 games last year. Parent organization Boston Red Sox had a solid draft, however most of their selections are in the majors. Even so, the Hawks are a talented team even after losing reigning WL MVP Armando Capois, who is up with the MLB team. Their biggest strength is a strong starting rotation led by 12 game winner from last year Jesus Iqute & 8-2 with a 1.97 era Harry Harpham. Pitcher To Watch: SP Harry Harpham (BOI) - Last year with Boise, then 19yo Harpham went 8-2 with a 1.97 era in 12 gs for Boise. Now at 20yo, and after a solid off-season, Harry is one of Boston's better pitching prospects. With potential ratings of 7/8/8, he never figures to be a star, but he could be a very solid back of the rotation SP. He still has alot of room to improve, but if you project his 12 game injury short season to 30 starts, he would have been a candidate for the WL Cy Young last year. Hitter To Watch: 2b Erve "Dutch" Beck (TRI) - Beck was a 5th rd selection in the 1900 draft of the Cleveland Indians, and many thought he would be their opening day starting 2b. But Beck struggled in the spring and was sent down to the minors, for what should only be a short stay. He is your prototypical #2 hitter/defensive 2b. His potential ratings show the story, 14/20 contact, 18/20 avoid K, 20/20 sac bunt, 11/20 speed and 14/20 defense. He should be up with the Indians soon and will be a nice role player type starting 2b that every winning team needs. Code:

Colorado's minor league affiliate has one of the most powerful teams in all of the IRL. LF Derek McNally, 3b Jens Nussbaum, C Nobuharu Kurihara all have above avg power and top prospect RF Leonardo Gargiola projects to a 30 hr guy in the MLB with a 14/20 potential HR power. On the mound, while their starters are nothing to write home about, they sport a very deep and talented bullpen with quite a few MLB quality RPs. Pitcher To Watch: SP Vito Ceara (EVE) - The reigning IRL ERA leader was released by the Yankees in the off-season and signed on with the Reds who assigned him to their minor league team, Everett. He made 19 starts for Aberdeen last year, and while only going 11-5, he was dominant with a 1.52 era and 0.92 whip. Pitching in the same division should only help Vito as he is familar with the hitters, and at 25yo, he has maxed his potential with ratings of 7/8/10. Hitter To Watch: CF Almandeto Garcia (ABE) - The top prospect on the Yankees rookie team struggled a bit last year going .259 with 10 hr, 48 rbi, 57 runs and 19 sb. But the 22 yo prospect projects to a solid starting MLB outfielder with projected ratings of 14/20 contact, 12/20 power, 13/20 eye, 15/20 speed and 12/20 defense. A 5 tool caliber prospect, Garcia should produce better numbers this year for Aberdeen unless the Yankees decide to call him up sometime this season. Code:

Parent team Tampa Bay had a great rookie draft, and thus Batavia has 3 MLB All-Star caliber players on it's roster this year. SP's George Winter (#4 overall pick) and Tommy Henshall both have 15-20 game MLB winner talents and both are sure-fire bets to be in the D-Rays rotation next year. C Fred Jacklitsh (4th rd pick) projects to a solid everyday MLB catcher and is the best hitter on Batavia. All in all, if these 3 remain in the minors all year, their star power should propel the Muck Dogs to a division title. Pitcher To Watch: SP Happy Townsend (WIL) - The round 5 selection of Townsend by Houston turned out to be a steal as SISA lists him as the #1 pitching prospect in the IRL. Some might argue that, but his potential ratings (7/20/12) are very solid and considering he has maxed out his potential, it is a shocker that Houston couldn't find a spot for him in their MLB rotation. The 22yo should dominate the IRL, but his stay here might be very short lived. Hitter To Watch: 1b Shunso Sotokoba (SC) - Sotokoba is not your typical rookie ball player. He played in 131 games last year for Seibu in the Japan Int League hitting .251 with 19 hr & 62 rbi. He was traded to the Mets in the off-season for high touted prospect Noe Hoyas. He made the Mets out of spring training, but struggled early hitting only .122 in 41 ab and was sent down to State College. He is now penciled in as their cleanup hitter and has very respectable ratings of 8/20 contact and 13/20 power. He can't be happy playing in the minors though and rumor is he might head back to Japan in the off-season. Code:

With a very deep and talented bullpen led by closer Rodrigro Rivera anchoring the pitching and a lineup featuring some solid hitters and 6 20+ sb threats, they are a defense/small ball type team that should win alot of close low scoring games. Pitcher To Watch: SP Jack Harper (HIC) - With reigning LL Cy Young Bill Lane in the majors, Harper takes over as Hickory's ace and the favorite to win the Cy Young this year. The 23yo prospect was the 12th pick in the draft by Toronto and has stellar potential ratings of 6/20/12. He projects to a solid middle of the rotation SP and if Toronto doesn't call him up, he has a chance to follow Lane as the only 20-game winners in the IRL. Hitter To Watch: CF Jose Sandoval (HAG) - The 5th rd draft pick by the Dodgers was released after spring training and signed on with SD. As Hagerstown's leadoff hitter, Sandoval is simply a burner with 19/20 speed and 18/20 steal skills. His contact 10/20 and eye 10/20 both need alot of work, but if the 26yo Venezuelan can improve those skills just a little bit, with his speed, he projects to a decent MLB CF with his speed. Code:

Their lineup doesn't feature any stars, but all 8 everyday players have contact ratings between 7-10, something that no other team can say. Pitcher To Watch: SP Jack Cronin (KAN) - While Gene McCann was the 1st rd pick, 5th rd pick Cronin is the better prospect. Although he is 26 yo, he still hasn't reached his full potential ratings of 4/19/17. He is also more ML ready than McCann and should be promoted sometime this season as he was thought to be the #5 starter for the Twins out of spring. Hitter To Watch: CF Dave Robinson (LAK) - The last pick in the 2nd rd of the draft, Robinson was dealt by the Angels to Pittsburgh for 1b Kitty Bransfeld. The 25 yo prospect will start off in the Pirates minor leagues with Lakewood. With potential ratings of 11/20 contact and 8/20 power, he doesn't look like a hot shot prospect, but when you add in his 19/20 defense at both LF & CF and 17/20 speed, he has the talent to be a platoon or part-time player in the majors.

Breaking News Report
BREAKING NEWS
(Report Date - 5/16/01) In simply a shocking turn of events, the #1 pick in the 1900 MLB Rookie Draft is now a member of the Nippon League's defending champs, the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks. On 5/15/01, for some unknown reason, the Philadelphia Phillies released Christy "Bix Six" Mathewson. When I say unknown, I really mean UNKNOWN as Mathewson was dominating thru the 1st month and half of his MLB career. Thru 7 gs, he was 3-2 with an insane 1.86 era and 0.99 whip. He was the team's #1 pitcher and star. And he was released? This is my first taste of wacky computer AI, as this move makes virtually no sense what so ever. But Philadelphia's mistake is Fukouka's good fortune. The next day, Christy signed a 1 yr/3.5m deal with the defending champs and immediatly makes the Hawks a favorite to repeat as *** champs.

Led by their 5 everyday player All-Stars, Nippon leads the PL in runs scored, avg & hr. And with 2 of the ***'s leading run producers in Furukawa & Ageda in the heart of their lineup, they will continue to score runs all year. On the mound, they have a bonafide ace in Tomashino, but the rest of their staff needs the run production as their team era is an unimpressive 4.60 Pitcher Spotlight: SP Pascual Maynez (FUK) - Maynez has been Japan's best pitcher the first half. Leading all of the *** in ERA & Whip, and the league's only 11 game winner, it's easy to understand why he will get the ball to start the All-star game. He also leads the PL in Vorp (42.8) and opp avg (.208) and at the midway point, looks like the runaway Cy Young winner in the Pacific. Hitter Spotlight: CF Naoki Ageda (NIP) - Ageda has been the best hitter in the 1st half for the PL as he flirts with .400. With close to a 0.30 lead in Batting Avg, he might have already clinched the batting title barring a prolonged slump. He also ranks in the top 5 in OPS, HR, RBI, Runs, Vorp & walks in the Pacific, showing that he is much more than a linedrive/singles type of hitter. Rookie Spotlight: LF Hirokazu Tarumi (TOH) - Not many rookies have seen the field in the PL thru the 1st half, however Tarumi has been splitting time in LF for the Ninjas and thru 77 ab is hitting .260 with 1 hr & 13 rbi. Not great numbers, but good enough to lead all PL rookies in every single offensive category. Code:

Leading the CL in runs scored, their offense has been strong, but their pitching is dominant as they are a full 0.40 era lower than any other team in Japan. With the 1-2 punch of Mifune & Kubo, the Giants have 2 Cy Young caliber SPs at the top of their staff, which will make catching them difficult for any team in the Central. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Masamune Mifune (YOM) - While only 8-3, Mifune has dominated the CL in most other pitching statisticsas he leads the Central in ERA, IP & Vorp and ranks in the top 3 in Wins, K's and Whip. Coming off an 18 win, 2.98 era season, Mifune has proved that he is a bonafide Ace pitcher and will be a pitcher to watch for some time in Japan at only 24 yo. Hitter Spotlight: RF Toyonobu Nagata (YOK) - Even though Nap Lajoie is hitting well over .400, Nagata has been the best hitter in the CL so far this season. He ranks in the top 5 or better in Avg, OPS, Vorp, HR, RBI, & runs, the only player in all of the CL who can make such a statement. He is on pace to shatter last year's .334, 16 hr, 74 rbi stats and is the front runner for the CL MVP at the midway point. Rookie Spotlight: SP Tatsuzo Iwahashi (YOM) - The Giants' 24 yo rookie was a suprise All-Star selection despite not having the greatest of overall stats thru the 1st half. Despite missing 2 weeks with an injury, he still leads all *** rookie pitchers in wins, IP, games, strikeouts and is 2nd in ERA. Nicely slotted in as the #5 starter for the best team in Japan, with 4 quality SPs ahead of him, he has no pressure and can continue to develop as a SP. LEAGUE LEADERS Code:

With 40 more runs scored and 17 more Hr hit than any other team in the IRL, they are simply out mashing their opponents. Even with a middle of the pack team avg of .237, with 2 of the top sluggers in the WL in Eastman & Garcia, they overcome the low batting avg. Pitcher Spotlight: RP Mirca Cozma (BIL) - Cozma is Billings' Mr. Do-it-all. The 20yo Bulgarian started 25 games for the Mustangs last year, but this year he has split time between starter and relief. Pitching in 20 games, 8 being starts, he leads the team in IP, leads the WL in strikeouts and is tied for league lead in wins. He pitches where ever the team needs him as does a good job in whatever role he's put in. Hitter Spotlight: RF John Eastman (IF) - Eastman has been the league's top slugger in the 1st half, leading all of the IRL in both HR & RBI despite barely hitting over the Mendoza line. Batting cleanup in the league's best offense, the 20yo has been a run producing machine, already topping last year's stats thru 47 games of 9 hr & 24 rbi in 73 games. Code:
1901 STANDINGS Washington League Central Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Eugene Emeralds 33 14 .702 - 30-17 Jupiter Hammerheads 25 22 .532 8.0 27-20 Tri City Valley Cats 25 22 .532 8.0 22-25 Boise Hawks 24 23 .511 9.0 22-25 Yakima Bears 16 31 .340 17.0 16-31 - Eugene was the IRL's best team thru the All-Star break, as they are the only team playing .700+ ball and thus have the biggest lead of all the division winners. With only 2 All-stars from the best team in the league, it shows they are very team orientated. With a WL league best team era of 2.49 & opp avg of .197 it is surprising that none of their pitchers made the team. Offensively, they are a middle of the pack team in just about every offensive category. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Jesus Iqute (BOI) - Iqute is the only 2 time All-Star in the WL, thanks in large part to his struggles every time he has been promoted to MLB Boston. In 20.1 career ML ip he has over an 8.00 era, but in 238.2 career IRL ip he is 18-4 with a 2.00 era, including ranking 3rd in the WL in both wins and ERA thru the 1st half of the season. At only 25yo, the PR native still has time to develop, but Boston might be better served letting him spend the rest of the season dominating for Billings. Hitter Spotlight: 1B Bob Stevenson (JUP) - Stevenson is the only hitter in the WL who ranks in the top 3 in Avg, HR & RBI at the midway point. He doesn't lead the league in any 1 category though, thanks mostly in part to Randy Dashwood of Brooklyn who is ahead of him on most lists. But the 20yo Stevenson has really improved on last year's .195, 5 hr, 21 rbi season and now finds himself as a legitimate 1b MLB prospect for Arizona. Code:
1901 STANDINGS Washington League Western Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Aberdeen Ironbirds 27 20 .574 - 27-20 Vancouver Canadians 25 22 .532 2.0 24-23 Brooklyn Cyclones 22 25 .468 5.0 23-24 Everett Aquasox 18 29 .383 9.0 22-25 - Despite being 2 games out in the West, Vancouver would be in the playoff hunt as the wildcard if the season ended today, but they are still looking for the division pennant. Led by a balanced attack of solid pitching and HR power offense, the Canadians feel they have enough to catch and surpass Aberdeen as the West leader, especially if they can keep playing as they have of late, going 8-2 over the last 10, they have gotten 2 games closer in the race as the league went to break. Pitcher Spotlight: CL Charlie Wood (VAN) - Wood isn't overpowering, and at 28, he might never be a MLB player, but he is a ver effective closer. As an 8th rd draft pick of Colorado, not much was expected out of Wood, but the 28 yo has pitched very well the 1st half of the season, converting 11 of 12 save attempts with one of the best ERAs for any closer in the league. Rumor has it that Colorado is ready to promote Vancouver ace Jack Katoll, so Wood will be counted on even more coming out of the pen to support the lesser SPs. Hitter Spotlight: 1B Randy Dashwood (BRO) - Except for the fact that he no longer plays in the IRL, Dashwood would be the league's 1st half MVP. He leads all of the IRL in avg, ops & vorp and ranks in the top 5 in the WL in both RBI & Runs. He has recently suffered the highest of highs and lowest of lows in the span of 2 days though. He was called up to Detroit on 6/15/01 and on 6/16/01 suffered a Strained PCL which has him on the DL for 5 weeks. He will miss the All-Star game being on the shelf, and when he comes back, it's unsure where the 23yo 1b will be, Detroit or Brooklyn. Code:

They have combined to go 11-4 on the season with an amazing 1.18 era and 0.92 whip. Both are definitely srrong possibilites to be called up to the majors with Tampa Bay, but if they spend the 2nd half in the IRL, the Muck Dogs have to be considered a strong bet to win it all. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Benicio Bursos (AUB) - The 7th rd pick of the LA Dodgers has come out of no where to have an amazing 1st half for Auburn. Tied for the lead league in wins, 4th in ERA, and 3rd in Vorp, the 22yo Cuban rookie is having a great season so far, despite really horrible ratings of 4/1/1. Hitter Spotlight: CF Martin Newbry (SC) - Newbry is a leadoff with great speed and a CF with a great glove. While not hitting for a spectacular avg or obp, he is tied for the league lead in SBs and has a perfect 1.000 fielding % with 3 assists. Out of HS, and still only 19, he has time to develop with the bat before seeing time in the majors with the Mets. Code:

Led by the best pitcher in the LL the 1st half, Rich Utermarck, the Spinner sport the best team era in the Lincoln. They also lead the LL in opp avg, strikeouts and shutouts, again, thanks in large part to Utermarck. If he remains on the roster all year, and with their other talented pitchers, they have enough to overcome a mere 5 game deficit. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Rich Utermarck (LOW) - Last year, at the midway point, Lowell SP Fernando Urrotia was the most dominant pitcher in the IRL. This year it's another U, Utermarck. The Rangers have yet another impressive arm in the minors in Rich, who is blowing away hitters. He is the only pitcher in the IRL with over 100 k's at the break, and is also tied for the league lead with 8 wins. He is averaging close to 8 ip in his starts with close to 10 k's and has 3 cg & 2 shutouts in his 11 starts. Hitter Spotlight: 1B Johnston Cheyney (LOW) - At 33yo, Cheyney is not a MLB caliber player, but he is showcasing his skills in hopes that he might get signed to a team in Japan or Mexico in the off-season. He is a capable linedrive hitter who works the count, ranking in the top 5 in the LL in avg, obp, ops and walks. He also has been displaying decent power with 7 homers despite only having a 5/20 rating in power. Making the All-Star game was a great honor for Johnston and should help him earn his professional contract in another league. Code:

Leading the league in HRs and team Avg, both by a large margin, the Power are built solely around their lineup, which features 4 All-Stars and the league leader in HR, RBI and Vorp. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Joel McKeaver (LAK) - The 30yo Edmonton Canada native has been the best pitcher in the division thru the 1st half. Last year he pitched out of the pen for the Padres, but this year he is back in the more familiar role of starter, albeit with the Pirates' minor league team. He ranks 3rd in the LL in ERA, and 2nd in Whip and is hoping a strong season might earn him another trip to the majors, and more hopefully, as a starter. Hitter Spotlight: RF Romano Charana (WV) - Charana has been the premier power hitter in the Lincoln League thus far this year. As the only slugger in the league with double digits in HRs and a 10 rbi lead over the player in 2nd place, he has really been head and shoulders above all other power hitters, despite hitting only .230 and striking out 31 times in 139 ab. But the 19yo our of Puerto Rico has a 14/20 potential HR power, and thus has 25 hr potential in the majors for the Cards. LEAGUE LEADERS Code:

Led by the leagues best contact hitter Bill Kile, the Yanks are hitting a division best .292 team avg. They also lead the division in HR and runs scored, led by Jack Flynt, the AL's leading run producer. Their lineup should be enough to get them into the playoffs, either winning the East pennant or as the wildcard. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Ben Vineyard (TOR) - Vineyard's arm is the main reason for the Blue Jays lead at the break. The 24yo ace ties for the league lead in wins and has dominated opposing hitters, leading the AL in Whip & Opp Avg. He also ranks 2nd in ERA & K's, and is one of the front runners for the AL Cy Young. Hitter Spotlight: C Bill Kile (NYY) - Kile hit an impressive .349 last year, this year he is shattering that as he flirts with the magical .400 number. with over 0.25 lead over the player with the 2nd best avg, Bill has clearly been the best contact hitter in the league. Mixing in some nice power (15 hr) and run production (51 rbi), Kile is the game's offensive best catcher this year by far. Rookie Spotlight: SP Jack Bracken (BOS) - Thought to be their #3 or 4 pitcher in the pre-season, Bracken has emerged as Boston's ace so far this year. He leads his team in both wins and era, which is saying alot when you factor in they have last year's Cy Young winner in Karl Holland. He also leads all MLB rookies in era and whip and all AL rookie pitchers in Vorp & IP while tied for the most wins. Code:

Led by a dominant 1-2 punch at the top of rotation in Clement and Alleman, Detroit has the best staff in the Central. Add in the AL's highest scoring offense, and you have the type of team capable of winning it all. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Erubiel Clemente (DET) - Clement was one of the best pitcher's in the AL last year, leading the league in wins, and he's well on his way to doing that again. With the majors best ERA & Vorp, Erubiel is tied for the AL lead in winsand 2nd in strikeouts to teammate Alleman. If the season ended now, he would be probably edge out his 2 other leading Cy Young candidates and was awarded the starting nod for the AL All-Star team. Hitter Spotlight: SS Jack "Zoom Zoom" McCowan (CLE) - Despite being 38yo, Cleveland signed McCowan away from Philly in the off-season, giving him a 2 yr deal. He has rewarded them as being the AL's best SS thru the 1st half of the season. He ranks on the AL's leaderboard in most offensive categories including Avg, OPS & Vorp, and as a SS, a position not usually known for it's offensive production. Rookie Spotlight: SP Bob Lawson (CLE) - Despite being a 6th rd pick, Lawson has been one of the Indians' top pitchers all year as their #4 starter. Tied for rookie lead in wins and GS he has been very effective in his 1st season for Cleveland, even though he sports rather high 4.22 era & 1.61 whip. Code:
1901 STANDINGS American League Western Division Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Texas Rangers 44 31 .587 - 40-35 Los Angeles (A) Angels 42 33 .560 2.0 41-34 Oakland Athletics 37 38 .493 7.0 35-40 Seattle Mariners 27 48 .360 17.0 29-46 - Texas might be the AL's most balanced team. 4 of their 5 starting pitchers have 8 wins or more, they have the AL's best closer, and their lineup features 5 players hitting over .275 and 6 players with double digits in HRs. These stats give them the nod to hold on in the tight AL West, because with some many players contributing, slumps won't effect them as much as the other teams in the West. Pitcher Spotlight: CL Jeremy "Ignitor" Millsap (TEX) - Millsap was the AL's best closer at the midway point last year with Minnesota, and signing with a new team hasn't changed much as he is still the best closer in the AL, this time for Texas. He leads all AL closers in saves, era, opp avg & whip and is looking for an extension with Texas as he only is signed to a 1 yr deal. Hitter Spotlight: 2b John Balcorta (ANA) - The reigning AL MVP isn't producing the same numbers as last year, but still remains one of the best hitters in the AL thru the 1st half. His avg is up from last year at .344, but his power and RBIs are down at the midway point. He is still on pace for a 30/30 season, but will need to pick up the power in order to dublicate last year's 40/40 campaign. Rookie Spotlight: RF Socks Seybold (SEA) - Simply put, Seybold is the best rookie in the majors. He's not hitting for much power with only 2 HR, but he leads all MLB rookies in just about every other category and is 2nd in the all of the AL in Avg at .366. Code:

Led by the sick 1-2 of George Boutte & Dave DeWarrenne, Atlanta has a large lead over any other NL team in runs scored and also is the NL leader in team Avg, OPS & HR. Even though they might be 1-2 in MVP voting, they have a great supporting case as 6 of their 8 regulars are hitting over .300 & 5 of the 8 have over 40 RBI. Pitcher Spotlight: CL Jose "Dawg" Arellanos (FLO) - The 2 time All-Star signed with the Marlins from the Dodgers in the off-season, but still remains one of the NL's best closers. Anchoring the NL East's best pitching staff, Dawg has coverted 23 of 24 saves this year with a NL closer's best 1.09 era while averaging over 1 k per inning. Hitter Spotlight: 2b George Boutte (ATL) - Atlanta signed Boutte to the richest deal in MLB history this off-season, and at the midway point, it looks like a bargain. For the 2nd straight year, the NL has a triple crown contender at the break, with Boutte leading the league in HR, RBI, Runs and Vorp and is only .004 behind the league leader in Batting Avg. His signing, and subsequent season, makes the Braves the favorite to win it all for the 2nd straight year. Rookie Spotlight: SP Fred Mitchell (NYM) - Leading all NL pitchers and all MLB rookies in wins, the 22nd pick in the draft has made an immediate impact for the Mets. Despite an unimpressive 37 k/36 bb ratio, Mitchell is 11-4 with a very respectable 3.41 era in his 1st MLB season. Code:

CF Rafael Chafuen is the NL leader in hits & Avg and 39 yo LF Eric Eckerman was an NL MVP nominee last year, and looks to be the same again this year, ranking in the top 5 in the NL in Avg, OPS, SB & Vorp. With those 2 leading the way, the Brewers should have enough to win in the below avg Central. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Hidemichi Mori (HOU) - Mori went 14-17 last year despite a solid 3.28 era...this year he has lowered that to 2.53 and is one of the best pitcher in the NL. Ranking among the league leaders in wins, ERA, IP, strikeouts, whip and Vorp, the 27 yo out of Japan has really found his A game and is one of the best in baseball. Hitter Spotlight: RF Eric Eckerman (MIL) - For the 2nd year in a row, Eckerman is the best hitter in the NL Central, despite being ancient in baseball terms as he nears 40. While the power seems to be going, he is on pace to match the rest of last year's near MVP season (.361, 51 hr, 127 rbi, 144 runs, 41 sb) Rookie Spotlight: SP Whitey Guese (MIL) - Despite a sub-.500 record at 5-7, Whitey leads all NL rookies with a solid 3.26 era while leading all of the NL with 18 gs & 138.0 ip. The 15th overall pick in last year's draft has jumped to the top of Milwaukee's rotation as their #1 starter, and at 29 yo is entering his prime. The wins will come if he keeps pitching as solid as he's been. Code:

Hitting is again the strength of the D-Backs as they are led by reigning NL MVP Incendio Ondarza, 2b All-Star Love and surprise All-star snub 1b Sexto Lopez. Pitcher Spotlight: SP Porfiro "Spitfire" Moncivaiz (SF) - At only 24 yo, the Dominican Spitfire is already a 2 time All-star and argueably the best pitcher in baseball since it's inception. Coming off a 19-5, 2.77 era season , Moncivaiz is back at it, ranking 2nd in the NL in ERA and Wins, leading in Vorp and among the leaders in IP, Whip & K's. The future is bright for Porfiro and the Giants. Hitter Spotlight: 3B Incendio "Spiderman" Ondarza (ARI) - As the controversial NL MVP last year, Ondarza knew he was going to be watched closely this year, and he hasn't disappointed. Although he is not matching last years numbers, he remains one of the most feared power hitters in baseball and if not for the insane season George Boutte is having, he would lead the NL in both HR & RBI. He wanted to prove last year he was the deserving MVP winner, and thru the 1st half, he certainly has. Rookie Spotlight: SP Tom "Long Tom" Hughes (COL) - Slim picking for a rookie spotlight player in the NL West, so Hughes gets the nod despite a very ordinary 5-4 record with a 3.48 era. As a 4th rd pick of the Rockies, he wasn't expected to make the big league team this year, so he has far exceeded expectations early on. The one thing he is doing well is putting away hitters and he leads all MLB rookies in strikeouts, but still only has 68 thru 101.0 ip. LEAGUE LEADERS Code:

Breaking News - Major International Trade
BREAKING NEWS - MAJOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE
(Report Date - 7/30/01) The biggest international trade in the baseball universe's history occured today between the MLB's NY Mets & the ***'s Hiroshima Toyo Carp NY Mets get: 27-year old second baseman Nap Lajoie Hiroshima Toyo Carp get: 25-year old starting pitcher Mike Ohler 24-year old minor league left fielder Francisco Mulert 17-year old minor league first baseman Joe Subea $3,000,000 in cash This is an interesting trade on both fronts. From Hiroshima's point of view, they are out of the race in the Central League, and despite one of the MVP contenders, they receive 3 young studs and some cash for a franchise losing tons of money. Ohler was a Cy Young caliber MLB pitcher at only 25 yo, and he should dominate in Japan. Mulert is a young OF with tons of power who while might not be able to excel at the MLB level, should be able to be a force in Japan. And Subea was an 11th rd draft pick in last year's rookie draft, but hoesntly doesn't amount to much more than a solid bench player. The Mets on the other hand give up their Ace starting pitcher in Ohler, however with Doc White, Ed Murphy and Fred Mitchell, they have 3 pitchers taken in the last draft, that have combined to go 40-23 this year with a 3.67 era, so they had pitching to spare. In dealing away Ohler, they got back Nap Lajoie, who might be one of the best linedrive hitters in the world, in any league, And as the current wild card team in the NL, Nap immediately slides in at SS and #3 in their lineup, giving them a big kick in the butt in the offense dept, something they desperately needed to go with their pitching. This is simply a huge and interesting trade, and exactly what I was hoping for when setting this up. I love it!
