Here's another question for you all.
Which team(s) is going to be the shock departure of the first round? For example in 1998 it was Spain, and in 2002 it was Argentina and France. There's always one.

Further to the USA talk, mine is Italy - they have all this match fixing scandal swirling over them, and they also bombed out of Euro 2004 in the opening round and then blamed Denmark and Sweden for "fixing" their final game to eliminate them. Not the fact they weren't good enough to go through, by not beating one of them. They also have one of the two toughest groups.

It wouldn't be nearly as big as the USA's victory over England in 1950, which is widely considered the greatest upset in World Cup history.

If the USA beat Brazil, it would eclipse the 1950 game for sure, a game that the English newspapers believed the result was a typo on the telegraph and put it down as 10-1 instead of 0-1.

For one reason - billions of people would be able to see it happen live. So whilst it might not be the greatest upset in WC history, which I agree that result is, it would resonate much more around the world, and in the eyes of the American soccer fans as well as the wider population, than that 1950 game.

Funny news story of the day before we head out.

The media here is reporting that the Saudis are apparently paying muslim non arab men off the street to attend the Saudis matches.
Everything from cigarettes to up to 300 Euros are being offered along with tickets and Saudi colours and attire as well as banners, flags and streamers

Pretty good stuff and I would not put it past the Saudis to do such a thing even though I can't find much wrong with it besides feel pity for the team.
Perhaps there is one nations that cares less about football than America does.

Anyways, we are off.
Have fun watching this afternoon
