Maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges here but I have no problem at all with the scrolling news ticker draining CPU usage in Football Manager 2006.

So the possible fix for OOTP might be to disable or pause it?? Is that really a fix?

I'm having the same problem. 1-2% CPU usage to start with, after I have my game loaded. After maybe half an hour, over 95%; sometimes when it's not simming games. Everything slows down and the game becomes unplayable, I have to click and hold to get any screen to appear; even then it takes a few seconds to navigate anywhere. I have to save and reboot to start playing again.

This happens to me as well. Over time, game slows to a crawl and I have to click and hold on a button to make sure it gets pushed. But damn, I am having fun with this game. Just my two cents...

Discovered yesterday that leaving the game idle overnight is a Really Bad Idea, but I didn't think to check what % of the CPU it was eating.

Installed the patch. Still having a major problem with this. Everything seems OK for about the first 30 minutes, then at least 98% CPU usage.

Still happening after exiting and continuing the saved game.

And turning the News Ticker off doesn't make any difference at all.

P4 2.26
1 GB Ram

I have been running into this issue since I bought the game. It is happening for me depending on what screen I am on. If I sit on one of the problem screens and do nothing the CPU will spike and stay at 100%. Installing the patch or turning the Ticker on or off doesn’t decrease the CPU load for the problem screens. It isn’t occurring for me when I have any pages that are in HTML(Team Homepage, Schedule, etc).

For me any screen that has a list of players is causing the CPU usage to spike and stay at 100%. An example of some screens that are causing the CPU usage to jump and stay at 100% are Roster, Pitching, Lineups, Depth Charts. Other game screens DO NOT cause the usage to stay at 100% are Transactions, Team Strategy, Front Office, Personnel, Reports, News & History. This is all while the game is windowed.

Here are my system specs
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2100+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.7GHz
Memory: 768MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce3

This bug has NOT been fixed with the patch. I'm still seeing %50 cpu usage doing nothing, ticker or no ticker.

This is a weird CPU usage issue.

I installed the patch and created a new league to check it out. I was looking at a team roster when I noticed that the CPU was at 100%. Turning off the ticker made no difference. After clicking around some more, I discovered that this behavior is unique to the roster tab.

Has anyone noticed this? Can anybody duplicate this?

Yeah, seems like it actually might be running worse for me post-patch.

This is pretty much my problem as well, though I don't get to 100% (levels off around 80&) The patch didn't amerliorate this nor did turning off the ticker.

One thing, the 50% usage and topping out in normally a sign of having hyperthreaded/dual processes. Effectly one of the CPU's is being run at 100% so it's the same bug just with a slightly different display.

It's been a problem in many version of OOTP before eventually being fixed. Originally it was down to a very poor routine to detect when the mouse or keyboard was going to be used to input data into the program.

Very interesting thread. I went through other sims last night which I thought might be memory(computer usage) hogs as well. Eastside Hockey Manager,Total Extreme Wrestling, and OOTP 6.5. Nothing in EHM ever got close to OOTP06 levels, the only time it would move above 50% is when I was creating the league. When sitting on a roster screen or a different screen it would sit at 1-2%, that makes what is happening in OOTP06 odd, just sitting on them screens with VERY high usage numbers. After playing OOTP06 for these few days I really miss the speed of the other games. I had initially thought EHM was slow, compared to OOTP06, huge difference.

IN testing 6.5, the numbers would only get high when it was saving or the initial loading process, no other data downloads or screens raised the levels to a noticable rate. 6.5 was also A lot faster the OOTP06 as far as clicking and basically scrolling around.

TEW really doesnt have much to do with this except it always struck me as a game that eats a lot of computer and I was right. Numbers for the game would get as high as OOTP06, athough this was only when it was uploading files.

I really hope this gets fixed or minimized... The Roster, Lineups, Depth Chart are the hogs for me. Pitching actually seemed fine.

Of course, we're continuing to monitor the situation of this and we'll keep searching for the problem

At first, I didn't pay attention to exactly when the spiking occurs but you're right. If I'm on my team home page there is hardly any CPU usage. But the news page will spike up to 99%.

And the news ticker is essentially useless anyway, at least for most of us. If you edit the team names, the default names will still show up in the news ticker.

As I mentioned earlier, no problem with Football Manager either. The only time there is a CPU drain in FM is during simming.

Hi,

Do you guys all have the patch from yesterday? Has anyone who had the problem before the patch, tried with the patch? Running tests here and it seems fine, even on the news screen.

Can some of you with this issue post your system specs too please?

CPU usage - Mine too!

After reading this thread I decided to open Task Manager and check my machine. 50%-55% solid while at the News option. My PC is:

Dell XPS-600
3.6 gig cpu
2 gig ram
2-NVIDIA 6800 video cards running in SLI mode
300 gig HD RAID-0 configuration
19" flat panel monitor

This is pretty bad, and this is also after yesterdays patch. I'm sure it will be fixed in the next patch though. I am impressed with the dedication of this crew.

I've been having the same 50% cpu usage thing since the first day. It is still the same after the patch. I've just tried a couple of different leagues with the task manager open to check the usage. Here's the results..... all once clicked to page and not doing anything else.

Team pages (any team)
Home tab cpu sometimes 0% sometimes 50%
Roster tab cpu 50%
Transactions tab cpu 0%
Pitching seems variable this one, sometimes 0% sometimes 50%
Lineups 50%
Depth Chart 50%
Team Strategy 0%
Finances 0%
Personnel 0%
Reports 0%
News and History 50%

All tabs within those tabs are same % as root tab.
All are the same regardless of ticker on or off.

Everything under the manager drop down seems to be 0%

Pre game: (interstingly mem usage was between 140,000k and 270,000k on previous tabs, now in pre game it is at 49,204k

Both teams lineup and start 50% cpu
Option and team stats page 0%

In Game: (not playing)
All screens at 0% cpu apart from the teams lineups and substitutions pages, both 50%

Game actually running (ie pbp displaying) cpu usage as expected and back to 0% once play ends.

On all of those pages that show 50% usage when idle as soon as you go to do something, ie selcet a drop down, the cpu usage goes down to what you might expect then as soon as you are done and idle it returns to 50% usage. Infact I don't know if this may help, but I just selected a drop down menu and left it open without selecting anything and the cpu usage is at 0%, soon as i click it off back to 50%

Hope all this may help.

I've had no other problems or crashes at all.

Comp:
Pentuim 4 3.0 ghz
ATI radeon 9200
1 gig ram
