If you're being taught that, your prof is a goof. Publicity is the catch-all word that encompasses the whole ball of wax. It literally means "public information." A press conference and advertising are just two different means to the same end, which is publicity, or getting the word out to the public.

Yeah, I think marketing basically seperates it due to whether it costs money or not. Promotion also doesn't have the same definition of advertising or publicity. Of course, I'm not a marketing major either, finance & accounting instead, but just remember it from my intro to marketing class.

Many big companies have different departments dealing with PR and Marketing

Then there are even subdivisions between each of those departments as well.
