Just +1 more vote for Steve's brilliant outline for the Advance Scout function. I would love that!

Sorry, I just really want it in the game. Please forgive my enthusiasm.

I already bought the game, last year right before the 20% discount was up!

Hate?

It's not a big deal, just a trend I keep seeing around here where the tones of posts are starting to become somewhat "demanding". We are 2 weeks away from a release and I am running into "must have", "has to be in", etc. on an hourly basis and I guess it has made me a bit grumpy.

In my vision, it would be something like this:

1. It would be as if the scout "quick-scouted" each player on the team.
2. The message would include the following info:

- Overall info on the team - last 10 games, position in the standings, etc.
- significant injuries (they just lost Wilson for the season, that's a big drop at center field for them)
- streaks (Cruz is unstoppable right now, we should pitch around him as much as possible; let's take advantage of White, he couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag)
- key players (just a list of the star-caliber players on their team)
- extra cool option: pitch matchup analysis (something like "We have our number 4 pitcher going against their ace on Wednesday. You should have a quick hook - we can't let that game get away from us...")

Thoughts?

Steve
Excellent stuff, but no time left for this... so, either next year or maybe in an update...

Glad to hear it! Even if it's next year or beyond i think this idea would be an excellent feature.

I don't think any of us thought it could make it in the release, Markus...just glad to see you like the idea and will consider it for an update and/or OOTP 2007.

Does the new version track individual batter vs. pitcher matchup stats? I've been playing the free 5 version for the last month or so and only see generic lefty vs righty stats. If these more specific matchup numbers are included than you can do your own advance scouting.

It would be great though to have some specific advantage or disadvantage matchup stats to be pulled out for you before every series. But in the meantime, I'm excited if these individual match-up stats are kept at all. It definitely would add alot to playing the games out.

Yes, if you set it to high-detail. See Markus's stats engine blog.

Wow. Thanks I read that. Just the fact alone that you can now see how a guy hits a certain pitcher makes the game worth buying.

I am not a stat head at all and I don't know much at all about (or really enjoy) all these new fangled stats; but for someone who likes to play every game out, being able to have these kind of basic individual match-up stats is heavenly.

I agree. I play every game and used to keep a notebook of opposing batters who'd burned me, and who was pitching, but that only keeps track of the failures. If a guy was 1 for 7 against my lefty specialist but that one was a dramatic homerun, I wouldn't use him. Plus, since my girlfriend moved in, I've been trying to downplay the compulsive computer baseball game notes.

Is this the first game that has head-to-head stats?

re:advance scouting

Will there be a history for the scouts? Lets say, Jose Rodriguez is an average scout but he has signed a few good role players. You will get to see the history of who the scout signs.

Here is a scenario...
Scout X is an 'A' average across the board in terms of rating but his history says he signed 120 players around the world. 25% of the players made it to the big show (good percentage) but only 1 of his player is having a HOF career, 2 of them are regular all stars and 5% of the players stayed in the show.

Scout Y is a 'B-' average in terms of his rating but history has him signing 60 players around the world. His notable signings has 0 HOF-like career players, 4 all stars, 20 good role players.

Then I would rather sign scout Y because the way he scouts, it looks like he produces more role players that sticks with the major league. He may never find that HOF, superstar player but his signings and his accuracy is good.

With Scout X, I wouldn't sign him because he is looking for that perferct player and he may have a better chance of finding that player. Most GM would sign his player more than scout Y because of his rating. Usually his players ask for a larger signing bonus, and they are more of a hit or miss.

When I say "signing", I define it as the scout who pushed for that reccomendation in the draft, the scout who FOUND that player. Basically the scout who will give them the pen to sign their first contract.

So my questions would be....
One day, will you be able to put the history of the scouts?

Who have they signed?

I also would LOVE to see a player's profile, where it says "signed by: Jose Rodriguez". And there will be a link to what Jose Rodriguez thought of him when he first saw him. What was his notes, ratings on that player and where is that player now.

Or where we can read the scouts profile, and it says who he signed. Click on the players name and you will read his first impression of the player and his "rating potential" would be. The next line you will see his current rating if he is better / worst/ about right with that player.

I remember major league had archives of old scouting reports, and what they said about HOF players. It's a great treasure to read what scouts thought about Roberto Clemente, George Brett, Goose Gossage etc etc.

roving scouts

Another request, marcus. How bout having gm ability to hire an additional scout or two, say a roving scout, used to scout countries, long term.

Most of the stuff identified here are things that I can already see...wins in last ten games, who's on a hot streak. Fine for general immersive details, but not really valuable beyond cluttering up my in-box. Now, if the advance scout can give me some details that aren't quite so obvious or directly available to me in the game -- things like manager tendencies, or maybe fatigue levels or something in that range -- then I can see it having more value. Of course, the scout would also refresh his opinion of those player's ratings...

Markus, this is the one difference between Steve's concept and mine. Something to consider when you get around to this ...
