I can't think of anyone who's done that. My knowledge only really stretches back to the Magic/Kareen/Worthy days, but since then, no one has ever won anything by himself. And I doubt anyone did before.

I seem to recall Russel having Cousy and Wilt having West.
What about Hakeem with the Rockets in '94? The rotation looked like this:

Hakeem, Otis Thorpe, Vernon Maxwell, Kenny Smith, Robert Horry, Mario Elie, Sam Cassell, Scott Brooks (who?), Carl Herrera, and Matt Bullard. That team won 58 games and a title, and there wasn't another All-Star caliber player on that team other than Dream.

C'mon, you'd really take Dan Marino over Trent Dilfer?

Pretty damn good supporting cast, but no stars, you're right. Hakeem doesn't ever seem to be talked about when it comes to all-time greats. Everyone always brings up Ewing, but they were contemperaries, and did anyone ever thing Ewing was better than the Dream?

Yeah, Olajuwon was decent. Actually, if I ranked centers all-time, he'd be in the top 5 with Chamberlain, Russell, Shaq, and David Robinson. Ewing was overrated, and the one real chance he had to win a title, Olajuwon outplayed him (then again, if John Starks hadn't forgotten how to shoot during Game 7...).

Probably the best post in the thread. To the point, succinct, and TT.

Agree with this response. Kobe definitely needs help, and probably will not win another title with the style of play that is allowed in Lakerland now.

For Laker fans, this has to be the toughest stretch of bad play and coaching they have seen in a long time.

Being a die-hard Laker fan, I can tell you last year was a whole lot worse.

My favorite football player since I was 8 years old... I even wrote an english paper when I was a freshman in college on why Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl.

Because of him, "can't win the big game" has been my least favorite sports cliche' since I can remember.

I actually did and ended up deleting it. Nice addition though

Kobe passes the ball all of the time, the problem is that you don't get an assist when your teamate throws up a brick.

Basketball needs sabermetrics. I'd love to see some stat that would consider "potential assists"....a player gets credit in this possible stat simply if the person they pass to puts up a shot, regardless of whether they make it or not. The Kobe assist.

And, again, if four players on the court are shooting for about 30% while the fifth player is shooting 50-60%, then give me a break on this ball hog argument. They only give W's to the teams that finish with the highest score.

I'm trying to imagine someone criticizing a baseball player for "selfishly" hitting a 2-run home run instead of trying for a suicide squeeze if they actually hit the homerun. That's a pretty accurate analogy.
