Orel's already stated he's not leaving the Rangers to make a lateral move. It's either a move up to manager, GM, or he'll return as pitching coach of the Rangers.

I tend to be an optimistic Dodgers fan, but the situation right now with ownership and management is just awful. I see very little reason for hope right now.

First of all, this is the dumbest thread title imaginable. Un-Rack the thread starter.
What's with all the Kim Ng love? What has she done? Other than piss off Eric Gagne by smacking him down during his arbitration hearing and then dancing a celebratory jig on his beaten carcass? I'm not going to be excited about her getting the job. If she gets it, I'll give her a chance, the same as I would any other unproven entity. I'm just not going to hope she gets it.

Most teams and players would agree to contracts before reaching arbitration. And that's GM's job. If you want to complaint about the Gagne case, blame it on whoever let it through to the arbitration process. Blame it on whoever set the price for the team. Not the girl that won the case for the team. Lawyers representing criminals aren't criminals.

And if Ng is so great at convincing the arbitrator, don't you think there is a good chance she'd be great with other GMs?

I'm with Skip on this one. All the evidence we have indicates that she knows what she's doing. She also knows the people left in the front office, the players and the prospects which will minimize any adjustment period. Given the time of year and the state of disarray, I think she's by far the best option. That said, with the McCourts at the helm, the Dodgers are still screwed.

We don't have any OF prospects above A-ball. Jacksonville is nothing but infielders and pitchers (but damn it if they're not good) and some 27- and 28-year-old outfielders who hit the crap out of those 21-year-old pitchers. Hell, we don't have any quality prospects period above AA. |

It's an overpay, considering Cruz's career as a whole, but no big deal if it gives you another year to sort out a cheaper alternative.

That leaves Ricky Ledee as our outfield cornerstone. Ricky Ledee. Given that the Dodgers can certainly afford three mil for a guy who can play for them all year (since they gave that to Jose Valentin for 147 AB last year), I think it was an extremely smart move. If he's not an Opening Day starter, which I'm fairly certain he will be, he'll be in the starting lineup by July when someone goes down. |
