Hey, at least I've been working on these Royals.

Here are the standings nearly a year later:

As you can see, the team has improved a bit from the 2005 squad.

I spent a good deal of time (and money) improving my offense

My pitching has improved, but I'm going to need more out of Morris (signed for $8m) if I want to compete

This league has a $75M salary cap. After the first off-season, every team is below that number except the Yankees and the Red Sox. New York is weighted down by A-Rod and Jeter's $20M contracts, but once those are up they should have more financial flexibility.

So, what did I do?
  • Watch the waiver wire like a hawk. I spent most of 2005 in last place, which gave me a great opportunity to pick up any promising player that hit the waiver wire. In a few cases, I was able to pick up veterans that I could then deal for other, more desirable players. Some might consider that a cheat - I consider it taking advantage of being the worst team in the league.
  • Bundle aging, poorly rated 5-star prospects and trade for slightly older, proven players. KC had several "5 star prospects" that were in their mid twenties and had actual ratings no where near their talent ratings. It seemed clear that they would never come close to their potential, but trading a 5 blue star guy is a lot easier than trading a 2 gold star guy (even though the talent ratings may stay the same after the transition). I acquired Rolen (the 2005 NL MVP) by packaging Denny Bautista (5 blue stars, but down to A and struggling there!) and a few others.
Minnesota has two of the best starters in the game, so barring a timely injury I doubt I'll catch up to them. This team will probably fade as the offense cools, but it's a lot more fun to play than my 2005 team.

I'm using the Royals as well. First year, dead last.

Should be quite a challenge.

I say, add as much young pitching as you can!
