I persoanlyl was really rooting for the Pirates to take it once my team went to sleep and stayed there for the year. I think that with Cotton and Gwantely, Pittsburgh has a good chance next year. After that with Cotton probably dropping/retireing, and Gajan gone this year, their rotation starts to get thin, and that coudl be trouble

Darn it all, get gramps in the big show Jeff

Sure, no love for the Giants.

When's the last time we won the Series?

Lots of long time stars with no rings here too. And talk about windows closing in another year or so....

You would be correct sir. Although I was hesitant to trade for him, Stell has made a believer out of me and he has been our ace pretty much the entire year. His drop down to #3 had nothing to do with his pecking order on our team.

Like you mentioned, was looking to take advantage of matchups that would give us the best chance of finishing strong and a day off on the calendar afforded us that opportunity to tweak. Wolfe finished strong as well, but I had more confidence in Stell's consistency so getting him another start ahead of schedule plus taking advantage of matchups worked out fairly well.

I was simply trying to talk you off the ledge, Jeff. Since Frank has talked about his tough times finishing close over the years, he made for an easy contrast.

As a "fan", it was as tough for me to watch as it was exciting. While I'm a Tigers Fan in the AL, Eric and Pete are two of the more enjoyable GMs to watch build a team. They're a couple of good guys, even if I'll never figure out Eric's waiver moves or Pete's line ups... but that part of what I also enjoy about them. They good sports in my ribbing, and give even better than the get from me. The team in the AL that I like the most won, but it's not east to root against those Sox and A's sides.

In the NL, it was brutal down the stretch with three of my favorite teams. You've seen the nice things I've yammered about the Pirates in the past, and I've come to their defense when they were besmirched by our Beloved Commish. I have a vested rooting interest in the Giants adding to the legacy that I will someday inherit (and promptly take into the basement :P ). And the Cards are filled with so many of my favorite players and have such a great almost Boys of Summer storyline that I have a great fondness for the club.

Beyond that, it's three of my favorite GMs going toe-to-toe. I wrote what I thought of you in the old wavier debate when someone kept claiming your players. I think Frank has gotten past what he saw as my Philly Luv and I get along with him really well now. And from all my dealing with Tom, he's one of the "good people" I've run across in online gaming/fantasy things.

"Coming close" sucks. I know that, and will be feeling the exact some thing if I ever get the Giants above .500. I just wanted to get across that you had an amazing and wonderful season.

> Sure, no love for the Giants.

1921. The series went the full nine games.

In Game 9, the Senators scored 4 runs in the top of the first on triples by McCaffrey, Will Miller, a dinger by Nicholson, a Turley two bagger and a Queener single. 19 game winner Collin Carr was looking like dog meat.

The Giants came back in the bottom of the first, when Threlkeld doubles in Krik, and after outs by Ditty and Jarry, Whitey Kohse doubled in Threlkeld.

It remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th, with the top of the order Kirk (leadoff 3B) and Threlkeld (RBI single) did the damage once again. This time a different member of the Giants great Thread Headed Monster heart of the order plated Threlkeld - Campbell Ditty crushed a ball into the gap for a double to tie the game. Kohse double in the first to plate Threlkeld. Ditty double in the fifth to plate him again. What two Hall of Famer sit astride the All-Time Doubles list?

In all this, the once shakey Collin Carr was finding himself, shutting out the Senators again in the top of the 6th.

In the bottom of the 6th, Willie Heilman led off with a double. Matt Valcarcel wild pitched him over to 3rd, and Joe Kirk's ground out plated him to make it 5-4 Giants.

Carr was sailing now. Whenever the Senators would get runners on, he would bring his best stuff and get out of before anyone could think of "scoring threat".

In the bottom of the 8th, catcher Daniel Kenny lead off with a walk. Carr bunted him over to second. The Kirk-Threlkeld did it yet again in the game, with a Krik single sending Kenny to third, and a Threlkeld single plating him.

In the top of the 9th, Carr allowed a one out single to Corie Mueller. Like he had done from the second on, Carr was deadly in the "pinch" this afternoon. A wicked "sinkball" induced Ronald Ulzheimer to ground to Jarry. The first base was known for his range and not his arm, and the throw to second arrived just before the sliding Mueller. Kohse, a four time Gold Glove winner, held his ground, got the ball and with his legendary "quick release" flipped the ball down to first knowing he didn't need a lot all the ball to be the slow footed Ulzheimer. Kohse didn't see the ball land in Jarry's mitt in plenty of time to complete the 3-6-3 double play - Mueller had taken him out on a hard slide, just a second too late to impact the throw.

Kohse, Ditty, Jarry. Forgotten players playing huge like Krik and Threlkeld. The Goat-to-Hero performance of Carr. Manager Ervin Greiner winning the first of his six World Series with the two New York clubs.

Yeah, it's been a long time.

What did I do? :P

I thought I'd made it plainly obvious that the Pirates were my current fav NL team. Although, as I said before, I'm kinda glad they don't face the Tigers since they're my current fav AL team & I'd hate for one to lose. I'll be rooting even harder for Pittsburgh next season. And I must say that their trade for Cotton Simson was the most exciting trade for me in the "live" era.

Can't wait until next year. I'm rooting for the Browns. With Boris and the other top prospects they have, we should see some dominance by them in the mid-to-late 50's...though they'll probably be the Orioles before they have any chance at a crown.

Let's all take a moment to reflect on the history of the Boston Braves. They're done for. 2 World Championships in 1911 and 1931. Maybe Vris could do a little report before they move to Milwaukee.

WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES UPDATED

WORLD SERIES

The Giants scored 3 runs off Corky Stell in the first 2 innings then added 3 more runs in the 5th. Meanwhile, Garland Sisk allowed just 2 runs off 6 hits.

Tigers 2 - Giants 6

The Tigers scored 3 runs in the 1st inning off Walter Pond. The runs came via a leadoff double from David Castaneda, a 1-out RBI single by Ray Kress and a 2 out, 2-run homerun from Matt Perly. Down 5-2 in the bottom of the 9th, New York got runners on the corners with no out against closer Lloyd Wyman. Tom Howard hit into a crucial double play that scored a run. Then Nick Pursell flied out to end the game.

Tigers 5 - Giants 3

New York scored a run in the 1st, but then Bud Ulrich calmed down and the Tigers offense took over. Detroit scored 3 runs in the 1st on a 3-run shot by Luther Ormiston. Then they scored 4 runs in the 3rd off two 2-run homers, one by Ray Kress and one by John Degal. Ulrich went on to allow just the one run off 5 hits in 7.2 IP, while Jack Schoonover allowed 7 runs before being lifted after 4 IP.

Giants 1 - Tigers 8

The Tigers broke open a scoreless tie with a 2-out grand slam by Kress in the 4th. Garland Sisk coughed up a solo dinger to Roland Fish in the 5th, while Bud Ulrich cruised along. Stell allowed just 2 runs off 7 hits over 7 IP. New York once again got to closer Wyman in the 9th with back-to-back 2-out singles. An error by shortstop Castaneda allowed a run to score and the inning to continue. Matt Perly then made a great defensive effort on a slow roller between 1st and 2nd to throw out Nick Pursell and end the game, giving Detroit a big 3-1 series lead.

Giants 3 - Tigers 6

Matt Perly hit a 3-run homer to highlight a 5-run 1st inning for Detroit. They scored another run in the 2nd and after two singles led off the 3rd, Walter Pond was chased from the game, slamming his glove onto the dugout floor on his way out. Detroit went on to add 2 more runs that inning in what turned out to be a 10-0 rout. Hal Andrew tossed a 4-hit shutout for his 2nd win of the series.

Giants 0 - Tigers 10

Ray Kress and Hal Andrew were named co-MVP's. In a Series where Detroit's offense dominated, Kress put on one of the best hitting performances EVER. He hit .600 with 4 HR, 2 doubles, 10 RBI, 7 runs, 7 walks, a .727 OBP, a 1.533 SLG and an unimaginable 2.261 OPS.

Not to be outdone, Andrew dominated New York from the pitching mound. He went 2-0 with a 1.15 ERA, including a 4-hit shutout in the clinching Game 5.

Kress was ending the regular season way too quiet like, I had hoped he was just saving up for this series. It's nice to finish on top after so many years of being runner up in the AL.

Congrats.

Yeah I'm thinking about writing something up. But I'm not in the right mind to do anything this week. I want to roll over and just go to sleep. Worst.Week.Ever.

Congrats to everyone.

Congrats to you too, that was one heck of a NL battle you fought your way out of.

Hopefully, we can hook up again in the not so distant future.

Alright, here's my annual report on the win shares. Here are our 1952 win share totals for hitters and pitchers. I'll give the top 5 defensive win shares at each position in the next post. As usual, if you want to know someone specific, just ask.
Code:
Position Players

              TEAM Win Shares
1) Kress DET 37.5
2) Helbig STL 35.7
3) Ormiston DET 32.7
4) Howard NYG 32.6
5) Rauch CHN 30.3
6) Habermehl PHA 30.2
7) Wing STL 29.9
8) H. Lee PHA 29.1
9) M. Lutske BOS 28.8
10) I. Walker PIT 28.6
Code:
Pitchers

               TEAM Win Shares
1) Allen Jr. CHA 31.6
2) Liebermann CHN 31.0
3) Simson PIT 30.7
4) Stell DET 26.4
5) Ulrich DET 25.4
6) Sisk NYG 23.9
7) Andrew DET 21.4
8) J. Lutske BOS 21.1
9) Gardner NYG 21.0
10) Lustgarten CHN 21.0
It is clear that Roadhouse was maybe the least deserving MVP winner of all time. With 20.8 WS for the year, he ranks 15th in the National League in win shares. I'm unable to check all the years, but this is easily the lowest ranking player I've seen win the MVP award. Apparently that .310 OBP doesn't matter to the voters.

I'm curious what SS Victor Estevez had in the way of Win Shares. He won the AL Gold Glove but wasn't on your list.
