Charley was either a 9/6/6 or 9/6/7 when drafted. The hit took him down to 5.

You'll not at the age of 18 how amazingly well developed he already was - 6 of his 9 stuff already in hand, and just 2 away from maxing out his Movement. Those were the Olden Days of TWB Development. You won't see anymore 18 year olds that well developed.
I can't imagine I EVER created an 18-yr-old w/ 6 stuff. Most likely 4 that developed quickly in his first season. A 5 is even a possibility. I just find it hard to believe I'd have started him w/ a 6. Anything's possible though.

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES

July 1952

Well, the Red Sox and A's had their shot at Detroit this month. 16 of the Tigers 26 games this month were against those two teams. Against the A's, Detroit went 3-3. Against the Red Sox, Detroit went 6-4. That's not what the A's and Sox need to creep closer to the mighty Tigers. As a matter of fact, Detroit increased its lead over 2nd place Boston to 8 games.

Tigers 3B Luther Ormiston is on a BOY pace. With Ray Kress not playing near the level he usually maintains, Luther has led the offense in what may turn into a career year. With homeruns and offense down this season, Ormiston is on pace to club 48 homeruns, easily a new personal record for him. It would also put him in the elite company of Kress, Ken Chaucer, Froggy Borgert, Oscar Vancini and Willard Schwarz as the only players to have hit 40 or more homeruns in a season.

At one point in the middle of the month, New York, Pittsburgh and St. Louis were in a 3-way tie for 1st in the NL. All three teams had sole possession of 1st place at some point during the month. As July closed, the Giants were on top, thanks primarily to their winning 6 of 7 games against the Phillies over the final 10 days. Pittsburgh had been in first earlier in the month, but they were swept in a 4-game series at St. Louis from July 18-21. Then young star pitcher Martin Gwaltney (12-6, 2.66) strained his elbow in a July 22nd loss to Brooklyn. He went on to pitch two more starts but allowed 12 runs, 18 hits and 11 walks over 14.1 innings. He may very well be sent to the disabled list for most of the month of August.

After 5 years without a no-hitter, we have witnessed two in just over a month. Young Cubs starter Edgar Weingarten allowed just 1 walk in a no-hit, 1-0 victory over the Cardinals. All-star Grady Ingram pitched valiantly for St. Louis, allowing just 1 run off 6 hits but took the loss. The game was scoreless until Cliff Wynne led off the top of the 7th with a solo homerun that just cleared the rightfield wall at Sportsman's Park.

American League-Pitcher of the Month:
Maury Baum (NYA)!
He had a record of 3-1 in 5 games started, with an ERA of 1.30.

American League-Batter of the Month:
Dale Thompson (SLA)!
He batted .459 in 98 AB, with 0 homers and 14 RBI.

National League-Pitcher of the Month:
Ace Shipley (STL)!
He had a record of 3-1 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 1.18.

National League-Batter of the Month:
Nick Pursell (NYG)!
He batted .380 in 100 AB, with 3 homers and 21 RBI.

Well, Lex's nickname does mean 'Puller of Teeth'. Maybe it should've read 'Puller of Talent'.

Bleah. This is the second time he's had nagging injuries this season. I dread to think of what might be next.

What's he doing straining his elbow against the Dodgers, anyway? He could've soft-tossed and beaten them.

OK, I think Morris finally got so good, not even the Gregorian calender could contain him:

Quite impressive if I may say so.

Just got around to reading the quotes after the all star game regarding Liebermann's plunking of Lutske. Great stuff.

In general Cubs news, man is Lustgarten having a career year or what? 2.65 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 15-7 record. Seems like I always have one surprise pitcher each season now. Evers was it last year. This year it's Lustgarten. Always liked the guy even though I've tried to trade him, moved him in and out of the pen, etc. I'd more or less decided not to pull him this year though after the way he ended last season. Too bad Evers couldn't keep up his level from last year.

I was going to go for either Janke or Lustgarden when I was deciding what pitcher to trade for Vaughn.

While i'm happy with my choice, looks lie I chose the wrong one :d

Just like this year. I'm sure my hitting will come alive next year and that will get me to at least 5th or 4th

Something good happened in the other side of St. Louis.
