FIVE RACES STILL ALIVE IN IPA
Three divisions in the IPA have pretty much been decided, but there are still five of them battling down the stretch... going into the last week of the regular season Kenwood has already cinched the Tycobbian West with a 13-game lead... Kilkenny has a confortable six-game margin in the Ruthlandian North... and Southport is up by five in the Tycobbian South Division... there will be all new champs in the Ruthlandian Union as none of last year's division winners managed to repeat... South Fork and North Hills are still in the pennant chase in the TU East and TU North, while it's unlikely Cape Coral will make it this year... the Hurricanes are five games behind Southport in the TU South with only seven to play.

However, there are several divisions that may go down to the last day... in the RU South St. John and Claxton are tied for first place with Crystal Lake three games behind, defending division champ San Dimas is four back and Waleska five out... unheraled Wynnamac has a three-game edge over Beechwood in the RU East and Colfax is up by two over Volusia in the RU West.

Over in the Tycobbian Union last year's winner South Fork has now overtaken High Mesa by one game in the TU East... the Cowboys have led for most of the season... Tucknarra and Ozarka only have an outside chance to win the flag... they are tied for third and trail by five games... in the hotly-contested TU North, defending Pro Cup holder North Hills is fighting for its life... the Hawks are deadlocked with surprising Hartsdale for first place with Blue Lake nipping at their heels, just one game off the pace... and Fairfax is still in the hunt, trailing by just three games.

PRO CUP PLAYOFFS HAVE A NEW LOOK
The field is wide open this season in the postseason with many new faces. Several familiar names are missing from the IPA Pro Cup playoffs this year. Defending champion North Hills and Cold Creek, two postseason regulars, failed to make it this year. The Hawks have captured four of the last eight Pro Cups and had a string of eight consecutive pennants snapped this year. The Catamounts have appeared in the playoffs six of the last eight seasons. The only repeat performers from last year are the Kenwood Wildcats and the South Fork Stallions, one of which will be gone after first-round games. The Wildcats and Stallions face each other in the Division Championship Series.

This will be the first time in history that the Kilkenny Cats have qualified for the Pro Cup playoffs. That leaves the hapless Hillsboro Blazers as the only team in the IPA that has never made the playoffs. Southport's last appearance was in 2028, Hartsdale made it in 2029 and Wynnamac in 2030. The other two clubs are of more recent vintage: St. John in 2036 and Colfax in 2038.

In first-round Tycobbian action this Wednesday, Southport (100-54) will host Hartsdale (92-62) and Kenwood (94-60) will entertain South Fork (85-69). In the Ruthlandian Division Championship Series, it will be Wynnamac (89-65) at Colfax (93-61) and St. John (86-68) on the road at Kilkenny (92-62).

CATS END 40-YEAR DROUGHT
For the first time in its IPA history the Kilkenny Cats finally won the Ruthlandian North Division... the Cats took charge in June when LaGrange stumbled and fell quite a bit behind and couldn't regain the lost ground... Kilkenny won the division flag by five games over the Sports, by 10 games over the third-place Taranto Tars and whipped fourth place Valmara by 17... the Ranford Bulls, the winner for the past two years and Pro champ in 2040, plummeted down to sixth this season and finished 19 games behind.

1. Kilkenny: the Cats had solid starters and a super bullpen... poor on defense with a .969 FA... Ciaran Cullen (21-11/2.99), James Crockett (17-16/3.32), Fred Doyle (12-9/3.44) and Jon Kostro (17-8/4.04) sparked the starting rotation, while the bullpen was led by Joe Pierce (13-6/1.07/7 saves) and Andy Mayfield (2-1/1.26/13 saves)... team improved from 73-81 (3rd-11 GB) to 92-62 this year... the batting jumped from .239 to .260, too... 3B Jorge Collazo (.296/20/75/97), CF Kevin McLaglen (.267/18/98/87) and C Frank Jordan (.278/25/73/53) were the top run producers.

2. LaGrange: good all-around club... rose up from seventh (17 GB) to second (5 GB) with better pitching and hitting, plus excellent glove work (.978 FA)... last postseason was in 2037... never won Pro Cup... the Sports possessed four impressive starters in All-Star Hot Dog Huxtable (24-10/2.79), Johnny Stoneman (17-9/2.69), Arnie Ayers (18-14/2.77) and J. J. Sarac (12-9/3.52)... not much in the bullpen... top bats were All-Star LF Vasco Aguilar (.323/31/112/101), RF Charles Bacque (.335/16/92/84) and SS John Rodgers (.313/19/86/100).

3. Taranto: no playoffs since 2019... won Pro Cup once in 2015... moved up from fourth (15 GB) to third (10 GB) this season... Rex Perrilloux (17-14/3.58) led the starters... 3B Mark Delaney (.280/47/128/78) had his best season with 47 HRs and 128 RBIs at age 37... other contributors were LF Derrick Damon (.314/20/84/100) and RF Gary Tramonte (.286/26/85/67)... so-so bats and pitching, but good power with 186 homers (4th)... just average defensively with a .972 FA.

4. Valmara: dropped from second place (5 GB) to fourth place (17 GB)... finished under .500... less-than-average on the mound and at the plate... average defense with a .973 FA... last pennant was in 2031... only Pro Cup trophy was in 2026... top pitchers were starter Teddy Twardzik (18-13/3.24) and relievers Paul Holloway (5-5/1.67/15 saves) and Gordon White (2-2/1.03/11 saves)... 1B Cain Greene (.287/32/113/78) had a fine year... didn't get much help.

5. Far Mountain: sixth last year (16 GB), fifth (18 GB) this year... not a lot offensively, nor on the hill... poor fielding (.968 FA)... won pennants in 2037 and 2038... and three Pro Cups 2011-2013... quality starters in 37-year-old Dennis Sasek (17-12/3.47), Ryan Kolb (16-10/3.78) and Curt Steinhauer (15-15/3.51)... excellent closer in Amos Tandy (4-1/1.45/17 saves)... only bat threat was CF Bert Richter (.293/32/101/90).

6. Ranford: won division in 2041 and 2041... surprise Pro Cup winner in 2040... offense just wasn't there this year... fairly decent pitching... average defense (.971 FA)... top performers were starters Duffy Davidson (22-13/2.84) and Ralph Hawk (16-14/3.38)... star LF Dale Weston carried the offensive load with a .313 BA, 36 HRs, 97 RBIs and 88 runs.

7. Glasco: the A's are a perennial second-division club... last made the postseason way, way, way back in 2002... no Pro Cups ever... rotation led by All-Star Basil Newchurch (19-15/3.10) and Pat Meyers (17-21/3.35)... CF Travis Houston led the club in just about everything with 24 HRs, 86 RBIs and 97 runs... batted .275.

8. Ancona: fewest wins in the RU with a very poor 55-99 mark... only Bay St. Clair in the Tycobbian Union was worse with 54 wins... no playoffs since 2022... never won Pro Cup... lousy pitching, weak offense, but good defense with .976 FA... came in last for the second straight season... 18 GB in 2041... 37 GB this year... Clint Hays (20-12/3.33) was the beat pitcher by far... star 3B Tommy Richardson (.324/20/86/83) had another good season... Richardson is a career .326 hitter... LF Eldon Aldridge (.274/37/104/92) has his best year, his first season as a regular after six years on the squad.

STJ CRUSADERS FEND OFF FOUR TEAMS IN RU SOUTH
Five clubs went at it pretty hot-and-heavy in the Ruthlandian South Division for pretty much the whole season... in the end the St. John Crusaders managed to pull away from the pack and hoisted the division flag over Cathedral Stadium... the torrid race went down to the last day of the season between the Crusaders and Claxton Diamonds with St. John winning by one game... fast-closing San Dimas also made it quite a race... the defending division champ came up short by two games and finished third... Crystal Lake shattered in September with seven straight defeats and slipped to fourth place, only four games off the pace... Waleska came in fifth, just six games back.

1. St. John: last pennant came in 2036... the Crusaders improved from fourth place (9 GB) this season... the club features good offense (.278 BA-4th), pretty good pitching (3.50 ERA-8th) and solid defense (.975 FA)... All-Star Jeremy Kirk (22-14/2.59) won 20 games for the fifth time in his career... he got help from Frank Long (19-15/2.89)... the bullpen was weak... most of the offense came from star RF Nicky Farrugia (.338/35/102/104), 3B Marty Blankenship (.260/34/108/84) and SS Tab Allison (.304/17/81/112)... the Crusaders have good bats throughout the batting order, but come up a little short on power (130 HRs-21st tied)... had the worst record of all the RU Division winners... not expected to do much in the postseason playoffs.

2. Claxton: the Diamonds are a good, solid team... rose up from fifth (16 GB) to a very close second this year (1 GB)... won pennant in 2038... still no Pro Cups in their trophy case... two fine starters in All-Star Sam Nathan (24-12/2.89) and Abe Schiffman (19-11/3.24)... Nathan tied Hot Dog Huxtable of LaGrange for the RU lead with 24 wins... Bill Hoover of Southport was first in the IPA with 26... Schiffman finished fourth in the IPA with 277 Ks... San Alejo's Will McKinley topped the IPA with 290 strikeouts... All-Star 1B Jojo DeLucca (.331/29/102/96) and LF Foxy Fuchs (.285/34/103/90) sparkled for the Diamonds at the plate.

3. San Dimas: bats fell off this year, dropping from .277 to .259 BA (22nd)... the Rancheros were the division winner last year... top pitchers were Gil Arnaud (19-12/2.40) and Seth Dawson (18-10/3.22)... All-Star closer Cerek Talago (10-7/3.48/11 saves) was switched to starter in the second half of the season, but only went 7-6 with an ERA over 4.00 in 18 starts... All-Star 3B Leonard Purkey (.349/29/90/95) had another strong year... RF Denny Hendrix (.266/24/109/86) also had a good season.

4. Crystal Lake: won the RU South in 2040... came in third in '41 (8 GB) and dropped in the standings this year to fourth, but was only 4 GB in the race... except for a September slump (8-12), the Crushers would have won the division... Crystal Lake had standout sticks (.291 BA), first in the IPA... second in scoring in the IPA with 843 runs... but not much power (110 HRs-29th)... bad to mediocre pitching with a 4.36 ERA (26th)... but they are excellent defensively with a .978 FA... Ken Lawson (22-10/3.33) was the only effective starter... though Mitchell Clarkson (17-14/4.44) and Dave McCauley (17-14/4.58) posted a lot of wins despite high ERAs... had four All-Stars in the line-up: 1B Daryl Brady (.362/27/113/87), C Del Peevy (.292/14/101/66), RF Paul Dillon (.316/7/78/94) and CF Jesse Walker (.317/1/46/97).

5. Waleska: disappointing season for the Westerners... they won the RU South and the Pro Cup in '37 and '39... and have been very strong contenders each year since... they dipped to fifth this year, but were only 6 GB... going into September they were running neck-and-neck for the division lead... pitching hurt this year, rising up from 3.03 ERA to 3.65 ERA (11th)... bats were average (.268 BA-11th)... fielding was average (.971 FA)... Tony Haskell (16-11/3.45) was the most dependable starter... Terry Richards (16-17/3.41) and Niles Nielsen (15-16/3.67) have had better years... it's the first time in his 15-year career that Richards had a losing season... C Rodney Hanson (.337/7/58/87) and CF Jon Lassiter (.322/8/62/74) were the top hitters, along with 3B Pete Furness (.285/28/100/85).

6. Valka: the Blackhawks are perennial also-rans with 14 consecutive second-division finishes... they have never won a Pro Cup and haven't been to the playoffs since 2017... top pitcher was starter Ando Lintrop (15-14/2.77)... Dave Gronkowski (16-13/4.13) and Billy Joe Clinton (12-9/3.97) were fairly dependable... in the bullpen Julien Rouse (6-8/2.42/20 saves) did his job well... star CF Kenny Mitsuzaka (.316/32/116/102) and star 1B Bobby Scott (.317/34/93/107) were strong as usual, but had little help.

7. Grand City: the Cybercats extended it second-division run to nine seasons with a seventh-place finish, but they were better this year... they were last in '41 (32 GB) and climbed up one notch in the standings, but were only 15 GB... the Cybercats have never won a Pro Cup... Grand City has good pitching, but woeful bats... the team ERA is 3.33 (4th), while they are near the bottom with a .250 BA (32nd)... the best pitchers are starters Billy Walton (13-9/2.50) and Kenny Morrow (14-17/2.94)... Kent Douglas (13-7/1.75) excelled as a closer... 1B Benny Hull (.265/31/80/60) was the only dependable hitter.

8. Belair Beach: the Sunbirds wound in the RU South cellar for the fourth time in the last five years... they haven't made the playoffs since 2016 and have yet to win a Pro Cup... pretty much a bad club, but are good defenders (.975 FA)... and have a fine bullpen with a 3.16 ERA (7th)... Andy Durham (14-19/4.45) and Zeppy Norbury (15-19/4.70) are mediocre starters... in the bullpen it's Tom Cook (5-2/2.33/10 saves) and Bryan Johnstone (0-2/2.29/1 save)... superstar All-Star 3B Jason Butler (.317/44/124/100) had another outstanding season, but has little help offensively.

SUNDOWNERS FINALLY RISE UP IN RU EAST
The surprise team of the IPA, the Wynnamac Sundowners, finally rose up and snared the Ruthlandian East Division championship this year after going 12 years without a pennant... and they did it the hard way, going from worst to first... Wynnamac came in last a year ago, 22 games out of first... the Sundowners turned it on in the second half and beat four other contenders... Beechwood, the leader at mid-season, wound up second, five games out... last year's winner Cold Creek and Sugar Valley tied for third place, trailing by seven games... and Elnora was fifth, ten games behind.

1. Wynnamac: the Sundowners were much improved over 2041... the pitching ERA went from a terrible 4.66 to a fairly decent 4.02 (21st), considering the offense went from a .266 BA to a very impressive .281 (2nd)... however, they are poor defensively (.969 FA)... top bat was superstar All-Star RF Nioka Inkamara (.329/49/141/117), who had another super season leading the IPA with 141 RBIs, the RU with 49 homers... Inkamara also was tied for second in the RU with 117 runs scored... other quality hitters were CF Darrell Donnelly (.303/14/82/88), 3B Duane Hudson (.293/5/73/91), C Edward Williams (.308/16/91/85) and 2B Curtis Whetstone (.278/8/75/83)... top starters were Geoff Hobart (18-10/3.53) and Shirai Nakamura (21-10/4.10)... best in the bullpen was Johnny Mitchell (8-7/3.33/18 saves)... sometimes good offensive clubs do well in the Pro Cup playoffs, if they can get some decent pitching to go with it... be wary of Wynnamac.

2. Beechwood: the Bobcats went from fifth (11 GB) to second and only 4 GB... have an explosive offense and better pitching helped... team ERA went from 4.29 to 3.79... defense is solid with a .975 FA... Beechwood hasn't been to the postseason since 2027 and has never won a Pro Cup... long-time star and ace Ken Arby (21-10/3.33) and Jimmy Herman (22-15) led the mound corps... best reliever was Freddy Manale (3-3/2.12/10 saves)... at the plate the Bobcats boomed 215 homers (1st), the most in the IPA and were fourth in the RU in scoring with 773 runs... they had nine players hit 12 or more HRs... RF Eddie Wilson (.3-5/41/104/90) was the biggest threat with 41 homers... 1B Corky Callahan (.280/27/70/71) was second with 27 HRs... CF Howie Baldwin (.271) had 24... CF Carlos Manuel (.275) had 19, C Paul Jackson (.282/17/71/67) hit 17 roundtrippers, LF Rich Nellis (.262) clouted 16 and SS Leonard Mason (309) socked 15 out of the park.

3. Cold Creek: for the last ten years the Catamounts have been in the first division in the RU East with five pennant in the last seven seasons... won the pennant the last three years, but tied for third this season... they were holding their own until the final six weeks when the 'Cats slumped to 23-25... Cold Creek is still looking for its first Pro Cup trophy... superstud J. J. Gillespie (19-12/2.49) is still the ace... except for Rob Hutchins (16-11/3.51) he didn't get the help he usually does... the bats were down quite a bit, too. from .274 to .251... CF Ken Brennan (.292/8/61/80) led the club with a .292 BA... veteran 2B Akihiro Samurakami (.287/12/57/99) came over from Elnora in July in a trade for 37-year-old starter Tommy Wynn (15-13/3.59)... they were the only decent hitters on the team... the Catamounts have no power at all with just 99 HRs (31st).

3. Sugar Valley: the Rattlers came in third for the third year in a row... last appeared in the playoffs in 2038... never won a Pro Cup, but did make the Finals in 2004 and 2024... they are a good scoring team (6th-765 runs) with power (199 HR-2nd) and fairly good pitching (3.51-9th), but defense is bad with a .969 FA... 37-year-old slugger LF Tyler White (.224) led with 31 roundtrippers, CF Carl Ramsey (.262) was second with 29, superstar All-Star RF Bobby Gamble (.312) had 28, 1B James Milton (.277) also had 28, and C Delmer Campbell (.252) totaled 22 HRs... Gamble drove in 112 runs and scored 120 runs... Ramsey knocked in 112 runs and scored 83... SS Roger Hobbs had a sub-par year with a .268 BA, 16 HRs, 63 RBIs and 109 runs... the starters were very good, led by 37-year-old Jeremy Blanchard (21-11/3.29), Davey Brennan (16-12/2.97) and Christopher Dunsberry (16-14/3.35)... Harry Fuller (4-2/2.71/7 saves) was the top reliever.

5. Elnora: the All-Stars had a winning season, but still wound up in the fifth spot in the standings, 10 games off the pace... the were sixth (12 GB) last year... they won their only Pro Cup in 2033 and last appeared in the playoffs in 2035... an average all-around club in all respects... good, but aging rotation, headed up by 37-year-old Jeremy Sellers (17-10/3.74), Stan Kivas (15-17/4.09) and Dan Pitts (15-18/3.84)... they picked up 37-year-old Tommy Wynn from Cold Creek in July... he was 15-13 overall with a 3.59 ERA... Wynn was 6-5 with a 3.35 ERA for the All-Stars and 9-8 with a 3.76 for the Catamounts... youngster Jamie Pananga (3-2/1.98/7 saves) showed good potential in the bullpen... best stick was All-Star LF Enos Conrad (.369/22/77/102), who flirted with the .400 mark until August and won the RU batting title with a .369 mark... another fine bat was All-Star C Cannon Johnson, who collected 22 HRs, drove in 98 runs and scored 71 runs with a .279 BA... 1B Cooter Whitter also had a solid season with a .326 BA, 20 HRs, 77 RBIs and 70 runs.

6. Belle Plaine: out of the blue the Musketeers shot up to second in '41 (3 GB), but came back to earth this year with a sixth-place finish (16 GB)... the Muskies have never won a Pro Cup and have made the playoffs only one time, way back in 2009... Tyrone Marte (15-9/4.23/5 saves) was just fair as a spot starter/reliever... Kurt Tandberg (6-5/3.50/16 saves) did fairly well in the bullpen... three guys carried the offense: RF Boo Boudreaux (.304/42/97/117), CF Noel Martin (.299/31/92/104) and 1B Mitch Mason (.302/29/83/83).

7. Marston: the Nine came in near the bottom again for the third successive season... no Pro Cups in its history... last postseason appearance was far back in 2028... Val Farnsworth (17-21/4.05) won the most games, John Newton (13-10/4.32) had the best record... young Felix DeLatte (9-5/3.50) had the best ERA... best performers at the plate were LF Alan Bailey (.338/13/56/65) with the best BA at .338, 3B Philip DeWey (.273/25/88/83) with the most homers, 25, and RBIs, 88... CF Marco Ameche chipped in with 14 homers, 80 RBIs, 68 runs and a .284 BA.

8. Eastshore: fell from fourth place (9 GB) to last place this year, 32 GB... poor pitching was the main culprit (4.62 ERA-29th)... no postseason since 2034, but the Elegants have won two Pro Cups in back-to-back seasons, 2016 and 2017... they can score runs, ranking 9th with 743 runs and 5th in homers with 171... All-Star SS Johnny Petrak (.311/24/126/73) had a standout season driving in 126 runs, seventh best in the IPA... 2B Marty O'Reilly (.274/24/79/79), RF Troy McFarland (.269/22/80/80), CF Scotty Lagrange (.274/20/62/58) and 3B Abe Bronstein (.319/6/28/64) also provided some offense... relievers Kenny Chandler (4-4/2.80/6 saves) and Delaney Moss (3-5/3.19/2 saves) were the best of the lot on the staff... 38-year-old Koy Clampett (11-16/4.93) and 34-year-old Teddy Noble (11-25/4.13) won the most games.

COLFAX CLIPS VOLUSIA BY A GAME IN RU WEST
It was pretty much a season-long battle between Colfax and Volusia in the Ruthlandian West Division... the Vigilantes held a three-game edge at mid-year, but the Blasters had a better second half and came away with the pennant by one game... the V's lapsed a little in the Summertime and allowed Colfax to build up a good lead, which enabled them to hold off Volusia's final charge... the Blasters actually lost the lead with two games to go, but won both of them, while the Vigilantes blew the pennant with two losses... Rocky Rapids and Forest City stayed in the race until the All-Star break and then both of them faded... the Snappers did come in third, 11 games back, while the Lumberjacks wound up fifth, 19 games off the pace... the Sligo Rovers finished fourth, but were never really in contention... defending division champion Middlefield dropped out of sight early in the year and ended up a dismal sixth, 20 games behind in the race.

1. Colfax: the Blasters came close in '41, '40, '37 and '35, but managed to rev it up a bit this year to win their first division flag since 2038... they have one Pro Cup, captured in 2010... the Blasters' strong point is scoring runs... they do it with a .275 BA (5th)... they ranked third with 803 runs... Colfax is better-than-average on the hill with a 3.68 ERA (12th)... could be a tough team in the postseason... the Blasters have a solid core of five .300 hitters in their batting order... All-Star 3B Kristian McEly (.322/33/128/103) ranked fifth in the IPA with 128 RBIs... 2B Gerry Sives (.328/3/71/114) tied for the IPA lead with 222 hits... Cape Coral's Rikky Van Dalen (.371) and Fairfax's John Velasco (.349) were the other co-leaders... McEly also went over the 200-mark with 201... LF Chet Penn (.329/30/106/94), CF Geno Calabrese (.315/10/65/97) and RF Kevin Williams (.300/13/80/87) had good years... 1B Ernie Kidd didn't hit much for average with a .248 mark, but did go deep 22 times and drove in 91 runs... on the mound Colfax was led by three 20-game winners: Nilos Andris (20-13/3.45), Bobby Porter (20-9/3.53) and Ron Paige (22-16/3.79)... the bullpen is in good hands with Jack Scanlon (9-2/2.68/18 saves).

2. Volusia: the Vigilantes greatly improved from seventh place (18 GB) a year ago... the V's last pennants were in 2034 and 2035... their only Pro Cup came in the IPA inaugural season, back in 2001... they are a strong club that features good pitching with a 3.27 ERA (2nd) and average scoring (15th), in spite of a .274 BA (8th) and 162 homers (6th)... Volusia had four solid starters in All-Star Drew Selby (21-15/2.61), All-Star Skeeter Millham (21-9/3.13), Raul Navarro (16-10/3.24) and Andrew Arryn (12-8/3.64/3 saves)... Afonso Tavora (6-1/2.89/11 saves) and Vern Gray (2-2/2.98/4 saves) steadied the relief corps... top run producers were 1B Kris Wilson (.349/23/91/68), CF Cazzie Carvalho (.291/18/84/93), SS Duane Blayney (.283/28/84/73), RF Lonny Womack (.278/19/91/89) and C George Ruffino (.275/20/66/81).

3. Rocky Rapids: the Snappers got their only Pro Cup years ago in 2019 and haven't won a pennant since 2020... but in recent times they have been competitive with four straight first-division finishes... the Snappers are average on the hill with a 3.82 ERA (17th)... average hitting with a .261 BA (17th) and 144 HRs (15th), but well above average in scoring with 769 runs (5th)... bat leaders were All-Star Marty Featherstone (.294/27/102/115), C Carney Kirkpatrick (.330/20/93/85), CF Buddy Hamilton (.261/31/97/92), LF Jose Ramos (.290/11/65/88) and 3B Duncan Musselwhite (.288/7/63/93)... top arms were All-Star Randy Peters (21-12/3.31) and Jamie Taylor (20-14/3.38)... Buster Noland (18-13/3.99) was also a quality starter... bullpen was led by Robby Barnhill (5-3/2.31/3 saves) and Janek Zoldak (2-2/2.85/9 saves).

4. Sligo: after winning back-to-back flags in '39 and '40, the Rovers slipped to fifth (12 GB) and fourth (17 GB) since... they won their only Pro Cup trophy in 2021... the staff had the best ERA in the RU with a fine 3.25... the offense is poor with only 655 runs (30th) and a .259 BA (20th)... All-Star Scotty Price (21-13/2.07) had the best ERA in the RU and third-best in the IPA with a superb 2.07 ERA... Randall Steele (20-17/3.41) also won 20 games... the other two in the rotation Buzz Bumgartner (11-16/3.61) and Tom Pierson (9-14/3.58) also chipped in with some quality starts... run support was a problem for all of them... the bullpen leader was Davey Hunter, who chalked up a 10-4 record with 10 saves and a 3.30 ERA in 47 games... All-Star 1B Denny Simmons topped the club in almost everything with a .332 BA, 39 doubles, 24 HRs, 96 RBIs and 94 runs... he got some help from LF Rudy Putnam (.280/10/75/70) and SS Neil Mitchell (.280/15/70/77).

5. Forest City: for the fifth consecutive season the Lumberjacks were a second-division club... last year's sixth place (12 GB) was in fact better than this year's fifth (19 GB)... the 'Jacks have never won a Pro Cup and last copped a pennant in 2013... they haven't even come close to winning the division... they were within five games of first on just two occasions, '18 and '29... the Lumberjacks can hit with a .278 BA (3rd), can score with 755 runs (7th) and have fair power with 130 HRs (21st-tied)... but have lackluster pitching with a 4.11 ERA (24th) and a terrible bullpen (4.87 ERA-31st)... All-Star 2B Kelly Hardison (.337/19/67/95), All-Star CF Carlo Velucci (.312/23/82/117), C Bob Brisdon (.332/12/83/79) and 1B Pistol Pete Ricard (.301/21/84/69) all hit .300... 3B Jarrod O'Neal still contributes at age 36 with 17 HRs, 85 RBIs, 81 runs, but hit only .255... 22-year-old Rusty Howard (20-13/3.00) was the ace of the mound staff... he was aided by Walter Gibbons (19-16/3.81).

6. Middlefield: the Roosters collapsed on the mound this year with the team ERA rising up from 3.59 to 4.24... last year they won the pennant, this year they slumped to sixth place (20 GB)... in 2005 Middlefield won its only Pro Cup... ace Larry Wheelhouse declined from 22-8 and a 3.08 ERA to 14-17 with a 3.87 ERA... James Long (17-15/4.22) posted the most wins on the staff... relievers Ray Owens (6-5/2.14/12 saves) and Ricky Farris (4-1/2.25/8 saves) were very effective... 1B Cliff Patterson was the only genuine threat at the plate with a .334 BA, 24 HRs, 88 RBIs and 81 runs... CF Norman Antonioni walloped 36 HRs in the lead-off spot and scored 94 runs to lead the club, but batted only .243, while driving in 64 runs... because of its homer-haven ballpark, the Roosters were still among the leaders in HRs with 196 (3rd).

7. Stoner: last year the Stars were last in the RU West (19 GB), this year they were seventh (23 GB)... Stoner has never won a Pro Cup and hasn't made the postseason since 2029... they are fairly good at scoring with 737 runs (11th-tied), but have very little power... pitching is not so good with a 4.48 ERA (28th)... aging vets CF Jason Garrett (.293/8/65/62) and RF Felix Jobin (.300/16/68/67), both 36, had the best averages... however, 34-year-old All-Star C Barney Swindell (.287/25/88/72) did the most damage... Michael Keller (22-16/3.71) stood out on the hill... not much help after him.

8. Fort Benton: the Defenders came in third last year (10 GB), but bombed this year and ended up in the cellar (28 GB)... for about 10 years from 2030 to 2040, they were regularly in contention, winning their only pennant in 2037... Fort Benton is still looking for its first Pro Cup... they are not a very good team at the plate (.261 BA-18th), no power, only 95 HRs (32nd), nor on the mound with a 4.38 ERA (27th), but they play excellent defense with a .978 FA... vets Tommy Baylor (13-13/3.45) and Augie Marquis (14-19/3.75) were the only effective starters... at age 36, Marquis is 322-245 in 18 seasons... Jordy Raeburn (14-21/4.97), normally reliable, had a frustrating season this year... the most dependable bats were RF Cayden Crittenden (.300/22/78/90) and 3B Mitch Hamilton (.297/4/71/84)... not much in the batting order after them.

KILKENNY CATS

Owner: Smithwick's Brewing Company
GM: Kieran McKenna
Manager: Rusty Denicola

The town of Kilkenny has a population of 65,000 and is situated inland about 10 miles south of the Kelnyck Ocean in the northern part of Valdar Island. Irish immigrants settled here in the 1850s, the time of the Great Famine in Ireland. With an exquisite coastline that ranges from rolling green hills to low, craggy bluffs and hills, Kilkenny offers a relaxed pace of life and scenic beauty. It hasn't changed much in the last hundred years.

The people of Kilkenny love to laugh, sing and drink, so it seems logical that the brewing business would be primary here. It is the home of Smithwick's Brewery, which was established in Kilkenny's namesake in Ireland in 1710. Smithwick's (pronounced "Smithicks"...the "w" is silent) produces its famous ale along with Kilkenny Cream Ale.

Visitors can sample great ale, good food and experience Irish music in its traditional pubs. The pub lies at the heart of cultural, social and musical life in Kilkenny. Belly bustin' comedy can be enjoyed each weekend at Smithwick's The Cat Laughs Comedy Club, which features the best of Irish comedians, both native and imported. Smithwick's also owns the local IPA baseball franchise, the Kilkenny Cats. Prior to entry into professional baseball, the brewery had sponsored amateur and company leagues since the early 1900s.

Another important industry to the Kilkenny economy is marble. The "Black Quarry" is the source of fine black marble, which is one of Valdar Islands biggest exports. Many of the buildings in the town are constructed with the black marble. In fact, Smithwick's Stadium, the home of the Kilkenny Cats, is almost totally built with the marble. It is an old ballpark, built in 1968.

A trip to Smithwick's Stadium is a culinary delight. In addition to hot dogs, hamburgers, peanuts and crackerjacks, you can get Irish delicacies at Smithwick's...authentic Irish ales, Irish stew, Irish coffee, apple cakes and whiskey cakes...for the ladies they have tea and scones. To entertain the fans there is the team's mascot, the Kilkenny Cat and his Leprecaun friends. Standing on top of the dugouts or roaming throught the stands, they lead cheers and songs and dance Irish jigs throughout the ballgame.

Whenever the Cats win the ballgame, it is tradition at Smithwick's Stadium to stand and sing the Irish classic, "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling".

Chorus
When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.

The Valdar Island towns have never really cooperated with one another and don't really get along very well. Relations have always beened strained and competition is intense. The Kilkennyans are a boisterous bunch at the ballgame and can be quite rowdy and vocal.

To head up the Kilkenny foray into professional baseball, Smithwick's Brewery hired Kieran McKenna to head up the club. He has been active as a player, coach, manager in the Valdar Baseball League since the 1970's and is well-respected in Valdar Island baseball circles.

The current skipper of the Cats is a former third baseman Rusty Denicola, who played 16 years with the club from 2016 to 2031... Denicola was just a journeyman infielder with a .266 career batting average and 147 home runs and 753 RBIs in 1524 games.

ST. JOHN CRUSADERS

Owner: The Brothers of St. John the Baptist
GM: Dick Billings
Manager: Clayton Luck

St. John is an isolated college town of 79,000, located in the sparsely-settled southwestern part of Ruthlandia. It is in the Southern Lowlands about a 100 miles inland from Belair Bay and the Southern Sea. Originally established by the Brothers of St. John the Baptist as a monastery and religious retreat. It is now the home of St. John University, a center of learning and the country's elite academic institution and research center. The university is run by the St. John Brothers.

The school's academic specialties are educational, agricultural and medical research. The university is the site of the oldest and largest library in the country. It also houses the largest medical center and hospital in Ruthlandia.

The Sisters of the Holy Cross Convent is also in St. John. The nuns are active in nursing and education. Together the two orders supply many doctors, nurses and teachers for the Islands.

Another important industry run by the Brothers is the Crusader Wagon Company, the makers of top-of-the-line cars, trucks and tractors used throughout Tycobbia and Ruthlandia. The company was started in the 1860s and made wagons and buggies, expanding to automobiles in the early 1900s.

The picturesque and idyllic town is filled with parks and boulevards, all centered around the university and is a nice place to call home and raise a family.

St. John is also home of the St. John Crusaders of the IPA's Ruthlandian Union South Division, who play at lovely Cathedral Stadium on the university campus. The stadium has a great view of the revered gothic cathedrals that pervade the campus. The fans also get a great panoramic view of the downtown area in the distance. The outfield walls and buildings in left, center and right fields are made of white marble. The Crusaders are owned and operated by the Brothers of St. John. Spectators and fans at the stadium can feast on wonderful and delicious sandwiches made with bread from the monastery's famous ovens and sample exquisite wines from its classic cellars and delightful cheeses from its marvelous dairies. All available at nominal prices. Typical baseball fare is also offered at the concession stands.

Crusader fans are noted for being true sportsmen in the truest sense of the word. They never boo the umpires or utter a discouraging word toward their beloved team or the visiting clubs. They will even applaud a good play by opposing players. A visit to Cathedral Stadium is truly unique and enjoyable.

Longtime front office man, Dick Billings, the fabled catcher for the legendary Marston Nine, one of the greatest amateur teams ever. He was an outstanding hitter, catcher and manager. Clayton Luck is now the manager of the Crusaders. He was a solid outfielder for St. John for 18 years from 2005 to 2022, retiring with a .279 career average, 2200 hits, 182 homers, 1278 runs and 846 RBIs.

WYNNAMAC SUNDOWNERS

Owner: Granger Co-Operative Association
GM/Manager: Matt Donnelly

Wynnamac is a town of 86,000 residents and can be found about 50 miles inland from the Valerian Ocean, which is near the eastern coast of Ruthlandia. It is located in the northeastern part of the country in the Central Plains, which spans east to west across it and is a well-known farming region, filled with seemingly endless fields of ripe golden wheat and rustic farms. It is the "Breadbasket of Ruthlandia". Settled by a diverse band of hearty and hardworking Canadian and Australian immigrants, who worked "sunup to sundown". They became known as "Sundowners" because of their great work ethic and love for the land...and for their love of baseball and the homestanding Wynnamac Sundowners. The area is also a center for meat packing and dairy industries.

Life hasn't changed much here for a hundred years and probably won't change much in the next hundred years. Wynnamac is a member of the IPA's Ruthlandian East Division. The club plays at Granger Field, which is built right next to a grain processing plant with huge silos and a water tower with a gigantic ear of corn on it...all visible from the ballpark. The Sundowners are owned by the Granger Co-operative Association, farmers banded together for the common good.

At the concession stands you get nothing fancy...just soda pop, hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, peanuts, crackerjacks and ice cream. No beer or alcoholic beverages are permitted at the stadium. It is against the law in Wynnamac county and strictly enforced.

Wynnamac's General Manager and Field Manager is Matt Donnelly, who loves the game of baseball like no other. And he played the game very well, too. He was an outstanding hitter and first baseman for quite a few seasons in the local company leagues, playing until he was almost 50.

COLFAX BLASTERS

Owner: Enim Dlog (Precious Metals Corporation)
GM/Manager: Ilya Szabo

Colfax is found in west central Ruthlandia, population 89,000. It is a "City of Gold" situated on the scenic Silver River, which flows out of the Silver Mountains northwest of Volusia, past Colfax and then eastward to the nation's capital, Forest City. It then merges with the Green River, which winds its way through the southern half of the country and ends at Belair Beach.

The town was settled during the Gold Rush of the 1850's and is still quite profitable. It is also an important coal mining center.

It is also the home of the Colfax Blasters of the Islandian Pro Alliance, who play in the Ruthlandian Baseball Union in the West Division. The team is nicknamed for the dynamite blasters, so important in mining the gold, silver, copper and coal...and also the longball hitters, therefore giving Blasters a double meaning.

Due to its great financial wealth and success, Colfaxians have a town of stunning beauty and charm. Built by the coal barons and the gold mine owners, it is filled with grand buildings and mansions, intermingled with the smokestacks that loom over the landscape. To lessen the environmental impact, quiet canals and man-made waterways flow through the town. Visitors can glide by boat along the tranquil Silver River or walk the fabled cobblestoned streets and discover a town that time has almost forgotten. You can hear its famous landmark, "The Belfry", a carillon or bells that toll every hour and has continuously for over 150 years. Colfax also boasts an opera house, concert hall, theater and a ballet company.

Colfax's Mountain View Stadium is known for its gorgeous view of the town, the Silver Mountain backdrop beyond the outfield fence and for its "Pot of Gold". It is an actual pot, five feet in diameter, located in the center field section of the ballpark, 410 feet away. Whenever a Blaster player hits a ball that ends up in the "Pot of Gold", the player and a fan each receive $5,000 in gold. The fan is chosen in a "lucky scorecard number" drawing.

At the ballpark you have hardworking and hard-living miners and the white collar and managerial set...the beer set and the champagne set. Both are attended to at Mountain View Stadium. You can get anything from hot dogs to caviar at the concession stands.

The Blasters' owner is Enim Dlog, whose ancestors are from somewhere in the Baltics. It was one of his ancestors, who first discovered gold in the 1850's. In fact, the new ballpark was built on the same site as the first gold mine.

The GM and Manager of the Colfax Blasters is Hall-of-Fame hurler Ilya Szabo, who pitched 19 seasons for the Blasters from 2003 to 2021. Lifetime Szabo was 327-210 with a great 2.57 ERA. He sparked them to 8 pennants and a Pro Cup in his tenure as a player. Colfax beat Turon in the 2010 Pro Cup. Szabo was inducted into the first HOF class in 2027. He was a 9-time All-Star, captured 4 RU Golden Arm Awards and was twice the Ruthlandian Most Valuable Player. He retired as a player in 2021 at age 42. Szabo went 18-17 his final season with a 3.76 ERA.

HELLCATS SNAP HAWKS 8-FLAG STREAK
The defending Pro Cup champion North Hills Hawks almost captured the Tycobbian North Division for a unprecedented ninth straight time. Going into September they had a three-game margin over runners-up Hartsdale and Blue Lake, but they were dethroned in the final days of the season when the Hellcats blew past everybody with eight consecutive victories and won by four games over Fairfax. North Hills came in third, trailing by four games and Blue Lake fell to fourth in the standings, seven games back... one key factor in the Hawks failure to repeat this season was the loss of ace Jeff Owens (8-3/2.25), who went out with an elbow injury in May... Owens won the Tycobbian Golden Arm the last two years.

1. Hartsdale: for the past few years the Hellcats have been a bottom-rung team, but they snapped out of it this year and climbed up from sixth to first place... Hartsdale last won the TU North in 2029... they have never won a Cup, but should have a serious shot this year... the Hellcats are solid in most respects with a .264 BA (9th), 731 runs (9th) and 175 homers (10th)... they do well on the hill, too, with a 3.33 ERA (6th)... fielding is average with a .971 FA... have a good group of starters in Gil Younger (20-15/3.25), Freddie Whitaker (19-16/2.85), Perry Givens (17-11/3.00) and Bill Reeves (12-9/3.56)... in the bullpen Alfonso Cervera (8-4/2.18/27 saves) led the IPA with 27 saves... no great bats, but a bunch of good ones in LF Marv Shaw (.293/30/91/87), 1B John Ford (.283/28/86/75), 2B Greg Melson (.267/25/82/67), 3B Robinson Alomar (.276/24/91/69) and CF Darrell Nesbitt (.290/18/69/103).

2. Fairfax: a poor 13-15 run in August cost the Frogs the pennant... they closed with a rush, but had too many games to make up and came in second, four games out of first... last year they were also second (3 GB)... it's been nine seasons since the Frogs won the division... Fairfax has never won the IPA crown... the club hit very well this year with a .286 BA (1st), scored very well with 817 runs (2nd), despite not having many homers... they hit 124 (28th)... on the mound they were pretty fair with a 3.63 ERA (13th)... All-Star 2B John Velasco had a career year at age 36 with a .349 BA, 22 HR, 118 RBIs and 109 runs... Velasco is a five-time All-Star... All-Star Scott Courtney hit .337 with 21 HRs, 97 RBIs and 88 runs... CF Brad Johnston batted .312, with 22 HRS, 92 RBIs and 124 runs... Johnston was second in the IPA in runs scored, topped only by Cape Coral's Rikky Van Dalen with 125... and 3B Bobby Joe Daniel batted .324 with 5 HRs, 45 RBIs and 97 runs... in a platoon role OF Gary Rice swatted .349 in 96 games with 8 HRs, 50 RBIs and 43 runs... top starters were Shaun O'Riley (15-6/3.49) and Harold Dorman (19-11/3.61)... Lucien Vashon (15-17/3.31) was also quality starter, too... in the bullpen Terry Sawyer (5-3/0.88/19 saves) had an outstanding season.

3. North Hills: the dominating Hawks slipped just a tare this year in the pitching department, but are still a classy ballclub... the team ERA rose up from a brilliant 2.76 to an excellent 3.03, still first in the IPA... the loss of two-time Golden Arm winner Jeff Owens (8-3/2.25) was fatal... offensively they are more than adequate with a .271 BA (6th), 705 runs (15th) and 143 HRs (23rd)... hard-luck All-Star Nelson Hooper (15-14/2.52) only went 4-10 the second half, but pitched very well... Tony Mack (22-13/3.34) was a rock-solid starter... David Michael (12-11/2.92/2 saves) was effective, too... Joey Santini (16-14/3.64) also had a good year... superstar All-Star LF Adam Thurgood had another marvelous year and continued to carry the club... Thurgood batted .344 with 35 doubles, 40 HRs, 119 RBIs and 98 runs... All-Star 3B Jim McDermott also lent a hand with a .309 BA, 16 HRs, 75 RBIs and 69 runs... 2B Tommy Vavas was steady and consistent with a .281 BA, 13 HRs, 62 RBIs and 103 runs... another reliable bat was C Timmy Stevens with a .273 BA, 14 HRs, 61 RBIs and 84 runs... with the return of a healthy Owens, the Hawks should be right back at the top.

4. Blue Lake: the Blue Sox are a good team in a very tough division... they were fifth in 2041 (16 GB), but improved to fourth (7 GB) this season... the Blue Hose haven't been to the postseason since the 2030 Pro Cup year... they have fine starters (3.32 ERA-6th) and a super bullpen (2.29 ERA-1st) and can put some runs on the scoreboard with a .269 BA (7th), 728 runs (10th) and 136 HRs (25th)... the Blue Sox need more HR power to really contend with the big boys... they could use better defense, too (.969 FA)... Sal Mays (18-15/2.95) is the staff leader with lots of help from Van Johnson (16-11/3.11)... 37-year-old Andre Montrose (15-11/3.91) turned in some quality starts, too... in the bullpen Razzy Richmond (7-2/2.07/12 saves) was the main man with help from Greg Mortimer (1-1/1.54) and Steve Horton (3-4/2.29/2 saves)... the club had a good core of hitters, but nothing outstanding... CF Dennis Clemmons (.319/9 HR/31/62) added to the roster in May led the team with a .319 BA and showed good potential... veteran RF Raddy Pajak (.285/8/59/100) topped the team with 100 runs... vet 2B Egon Ojamaa (.271/23/84/72) had the most homers (23) and RBIs (84)... 22-year-old SS Gordon Smith (.293/16/80/70) did a solid job at bat and in the field... LF Jack Ryan was dependable with a .293 BA, 10 HRs, 61 RBIs and 56 runs... as was 1B Mel Morrison with a .272 BA, 18 HRs, 77 RBIs and 62 runs.

5. Mahaska: after four fine seasons from 2038 to 2041 with three seconds and one third-place finish, the Haymakers are now just a so-so ballclub (16 GB) with average pitching and batting, but very good defense... Mahaska has never won a Pro Cup... the last playoff appearance was 15 years ago... they possess three quality starters in Bobby Kelman (16-13/2.99), Jergen Fyelstad (16-9/3.51) and Greg Douglas (13-11/3.56)... in the bullpen Luke Cargill (5-6/3.28/23 saves) was tied for third in the IPA with 23 saves... Hartsdale's Alfonso Cervera was tops with 27 with Jim Greene of Ozarka number two with 24... young C James Boswell (.289/31/92/68) paced the club in homers (31) and BA (.289)... CF Bill Whittier (.257/20/71/91) led the team in runs with 91... star 2B Mikk Kukk (.274/16/71/77) may be slowing down at age 35.

6. White River: it's been years since they made the playoffs (2027)... White River has never won the Pro Cup, but they did get as far as the Finals in 2021, when they lost out to the Sligo Rovers... the Rascals slipped a bit this year from fourth place (14 GB) to sixth (19 GB), mainly because of pitching... the team ERA went up from 3.80 to 4.13 (23rd)... the Rascals had plenty of power with 207 HRs (3rd) and can score runs with 758 (6th)... top hitters were All-Star 1B Billy Joe Hickman (.295/39/96/101) and SS Warren McKenzie (.265/39/122/81)... McKenzie was sixth in the Tycobbian Union with 122 RBIs... Kunta Burton had solid year at second base with a team-high .304 BA, along with 98 runs, 54 RBIs and 6 HRs... Jade Garner (17-15/4.33) led the starters in wins with 17... Clem Warren (16-18/3.46) had the best ERA.

7. Luxora: the Zorros have slipped to seventh the last two years after three straight third-place finishes... their last pennant came in 2031... the Z's have never won the Pro Cup... never even making the Finals... they were 11 GB in '40, 20 GB in '41 and 29 GB this season... just a lackluster team with fairly good power (170 HR-14th)... Kent Halloran (16-19/3.03) is still a top-notch hurler age 36... Doug Hansack (10-10/3.53) is still a quality arm at 35... Jerry Jankins (4-5/3.31/15 saves) is a fairly good reliever... the club's best performer at the plate was 3B Todd Dubbins (.293/38/105/77), who topped the team in BA, HRs and RBIs... SS Joel Poche (.290/26/77/86) and CF Milt Powers (.256/23/81/74) were productive bats, too.

8. Oxford: it was another rotten year for the Red Caps, who finished in last place for the fourth time in a row... they were seventh five years ago... Oxford's last playoff appearance was the 2007 Pro Cup season, the only time they have hauled in the IPA crown... the Red Caps don't do anything very well except hit homers... they were fourth in the TU with 198... no one on the team hits for much average... 2B Alonzo Norris led the club with 35 homers, 98 RBIs, 98 runs and a .272 BA... C Jayson French (.270) hit 24 and 1B Andy Preston (.258) collected 21... Tekkan Nishikawa was the mound leader, but finished 13-14 with a 4.14 ERA... he was the only starter under 4.67 ERA.

Hartsdale Hellcats

Owner: Pioneer Brewing Company
GM: Zim Donner
Manager: Jud Turchin

Hartsdale, with population of about 74,OOO, is situated on the slopes of the Appian Mountains of Northern Tycobbia. It is a blue-collar, working class town, functional and old-fashioned in architecture. Primary industries are coal and iron ore mining, timber, glassware and beer. The vital Appian River begins in the Appian Mountains near North Hills, travels most of the country from north to south, past Hartsdale to the capital city, La Claire, then finally culminates at Bay St. Clair, a seaport town on the west central coast. The river provides an inexpensive source of transportation and is crucial to Hartsdale’s and Tycobbia’s economies.

Hartsdale is also the home of the Hellcats baseball team of the Islandian Pro Alliance. They are in the Tycobbian Union North Division and play at Pioneer Park. The Pioneer Brewing Company owns the club and is the maker of Tycobbia’s favorite brew, Pioneer Premium Beer. The brewery can be seen just beyond the center and right field fences of Pioneer Park. In fact, the brick walls of the factory form part of the right field bleachers. Company bigwigs can watch the ballgame from their offices.

Hellcats fans take their baseball very seriously and are serious students of the game. It’s baseball, beer and hot dogs in the hearts of the fans -- and the last two are a very distant second. When they go to a game, their eyes stay glued to the action on the field. They are hardcore Hellcats fans, too, and give no breaks or quarter to the opposing team or their fans. Very few visiting fans have the courage to display their loyalties very much in front of the rough and rowdy Hellcats. They get some very hard stares if they do. The Hartsdalians are tough and demanding on the Hellcats players, too. At the traditional seventh inning stretch each adult is gifted with a small sample of Pioneer Beer and it is used to toast their cherished baseball team as they sing a few bars of “99 bottles of beer on the wall”, followed by “Take me out to the ballgame”. And you can get the best burgers and dogs in Tycobbia, grilled to perfection on the concessions concourse.

The Hellcats are corporately owned. Zim Donner, a 50-year veteran in amateur and professional baseball, is the GM. He was a fine up-and-coming shortstop until he suffered a couple of beanballs that turned him into just a journeyman infielder. But he is one fine manager and baseball teacher. When he was the manager Donner was known to charge the mound occasionally. The fiery Hellcats fans love him. Donner moved upstairs a few years ago and made Hall of Fame shortstop Jud Turchin the skipper. He was a seven-time All-Star in addition to being a Gold Glove fielder, who swung a big bat. In his 21 seasons with Hartsdale (2002-2022) Turchin batted .304 with over 300 homers, 1600 RBIs and 1800 runs scored. He played in 2957 games, collected 3360 hits and was inducted into the IPA Hall of Fame in 2036.

SOUTHPORT BREEZES TO TU SOUTH TITLE
What a remarkable turnaround for the Southport Sun Sox! They went from seventh place and 30 games behind last season to the top spot in the Tycobbian South Division, which they won in a breeze. The Sun Sox ran up a huge lead by mid-season and then maintained it, winning the pennant by eight games over San Alejo, bested defending champ Cape Coral by 11 games and beat Summerland by 13. Southport posted the best record in the IPA with 100 victories, six better than runner-up Kenwood of the TU West. Colfax had the best record in the Ruthlandian Union with 93 wins. The TU West was one of the strongest divisions in the IPA with seven teams that were .500 or better. Cellar-dwelling Ginza was only ten games under the .500 mark.

1. Southport: the Sun Sox easily beat their all-time best record... the most they had ever won was 90 games in 2021, when they finished second... the Sun Sox have never won a Pro Cup... they were in the playoffs last in back-to-back years 2027 and 2028... Southport does everything well except play good defense (.969 FA)... they hit .275 (4th), scored 806 runs (4th), racked up 184 HRs (8th) and put up a fine 3.19 ERA (5th)... look out Pro Cup, the Sun Sox look like the top seed... the starting four did their job well sparked by Billy Hoover (26-11/2.16), a strong contender for the Golden Arm Award... others in the rotation were Brandon Delmore (16-10/3.13), Johnny Swanson (15-12/3.52) and Gordon Forbes (12-5/4.17)... Southport had a solid bullpen, too, with Hal Combs (7-4/1.73/10 saves) and Wayne Stewart (4-2/1.52/10 saves)... top guns were All-Star 3B Craig Glennon (.278/34/115/107), All-Star CF Barney Lewis (.277/34/98/85), 1B Eddy Douglas (.339/28/103/75), 2B James Long (.276/23/82/79), C Vasillis Vlachos (.285/17/69/57) and RF Pat Kinney (.301/5/40/78).

2. San Alejo: the Montaneros fought a good fight with 92 wins this year... they came up eight games short this year after coming in third last season (13 GB)... the Monties last made a postseason in 2037... they won their only Pro Cup in 2032... they have more impressive stats than Southport with a .275 BA (5th), 780 runs, 190 HRs (5th-tied) and an impressive 3.06 ERA (3rd)... San Alejo may have the best starting four in the IPA with Will McKinney (24-10/2.63), Matt Bell (22-11/2.18), Tommy Smith (10-5/2.53) and Benny Buckmaster (18-14/3.69)... the bullpen is good, too, with Lupe Olmedo (3-1/2.81/8 saves), Raydon Burks (4-1/2.42/5 saves) and Glen Porterfield (2-3/2.62/4 saves)... the bats are potent with plenty of them in All-Star C Filipe Zamora (.315/34/124/85), who ranked fourth in the TU with 124 RBIs... All-Star RF Paulo Teixeira (.319/34/101/98), old reliable Gold Glover CF Dusty Rogan (.307/27/91/86), who still wields a good bat and a good glove at age 35... vet LF Charlie Wilberforce (.335/23/78/91)... and 1B Bubby Blackwell (.295/6/53/96).

3. Cape Coral: the hard-hitting Hurricanes won the pennant last year with 97 victories, but slipped a little on the mound and fell to third place in the standings (11 GB)... nonetheless, still a good season with a .282 BA (2nd), 831 runs (1st) and 190 HRs (5th-tied)... weak on the hill though with a 4.27 ERA (26th), up from 4.06 last year... the explosive line-up was paced by All-Star LF Rikky Van Dalen (.371/31/123/125), who had the best average in the IPA with .371 and the most runs with 125... it was a career year for Van Dalen... All-Star RF William Snyder (.329/33/121/94) had another super season... along with All-Star 1B Stan Ferguson (.308/38/117/82) and CF Max Tselika (.321/20/73/103)... the starters were a solid bunch with Jake Cuyler (22-10/3.71), Tommy Van Noord (19-11/3.57) and Benton McCall (17-11/3.86/one save)... it was the bullpen that let the 'Canes down with a terrible 5.62 ERA (32nd).

4. Summerland: the Sunsets won the TU South in 2040, came in fourth in 2041 (17 GB) and fourth this year (13 G)... scoring runs is their problem with a .247 BA (26th) and little power with 120 HRs (30th)... on the mound they are quite good with a strong 3.03 ERA (2nd)... Summerland has never won a Pro Cup, but almost won it in 2040 when Ranford edged them in the Finals four games to three... Golden Arm contender Jayson Hallstrom (25-9/2.05) and Billy King (20-14/2.56) pretty much carried the club... the most reliable reliever was Pete Ashley (5-4/2.86/7 saves)... at the plate the Sunsets were led by 1B Stan Terry (.279/20/73/80), who topped the club with 20 homers, 73 RBIs and 80 runs scored... RF Antonio Vasquez (.264/9/65/78) was the only other decent bat.

5. Turon: the Typhoons had a winning record, six games over .500, but wound up in the fifth spot, at the top of the second division 20 GB... the were the division runner-up last year (8 GB)... the TU South is a strong division... Turon is tied with North Hills for the most Pro Cups with four, but they haven't won it since 2018, though they had shots at it in 2038 and 2039, but were beaten in the first round both years by North Hills... the Typhoons have fair pitching with a 3.84 ERA (19th) and solid hitting with a .266 BA (8th), 744 runs (7th) and 167 HRs (16th)... leading the offense were CF J. P. Trevenot (.301/18/70/78), 2B C. C. Kingsford (.272/16/77/73), RF Guido Gervasio (.272/19/61/84) and 3B Rafer Robertson (.269/30/97/70)... top hurlers were Clyde Engstrom (20-14/3.42) and Armin Boehm (15-11/3.06)... Ralph Fulton (6-8/2.58/17 saves) was the best reliever.

6. Arroyo Grande: the Suns came in sixth in the TU South, but chalked up a winning record, finishing 21 GB... for the previous seven seasons they were either seventh or last in the division... last year they were in the cellar and 30 GB... Arroyo Grande has never won a Pro Cup... their last appearance was in 2024... the Suns have decent pitching (3.92 ERA-21st) and can score runs (711-13th) with good power (182 HR-9th)... they are a pretty fair ballclub in a division packed with strong teams... top pitchers are Fernando Campos (17-12/3.79), Enrique Lopez (19-16/4.09), Dwayne McMahon (15-13/3.73) and Anthony Lombardi (17-18/4.05)... best bats are 2B Thomas Rutherford (.305/17/91/82), 1B Matt Moore (.283/20/65/70) and SS Don Colby (.268/15/67/77).

7. Colchester: even the seventh place Elites compiled a .500 mark (21 GB)... last year they were 18 games under .500 and 29 GB in sixth place... for six years in a row the Elites have been a second-division club... they have not won a Pro Cup in the team history... and last played in the postseason in 2036... Colchester is just an average team... Lacey Foxx (18-10/3.36), Dan Scott (17-15/3.66) and Dave Lacoste (13-16/3.69) are the most effective starters... superstar CF Blake Barrister was third in homers and RBIs in the IPA... he had 48 HRs and 134 RBIs, while batting .265... 3B Joey Rogers chipped in a team high .311 BA with 9 HRs, 62 RBIs and 91 runs... rookie 1B Ace Diamond added 34 HRs and 95 RBIs, but batted only .228.

8. Ginza: the Ninjas came in last in the division (28 GB), but were only 10 games under .500... they were fifth last season (22 GB)... the Ninjas haven't been in the playoffs for 11 years and have never won a Pro Cup... the have a fairly good offense with 709 runs (14th), .259 BA (15th) and 174 HRs (11th), but a poor pitching staff with a 4.37 ERA (27th)... superstar All-Star CF Sogo Takagi (.305/23/80/111) and All-Star SS Sam Essex (.305/26/107/74) were the only real threats in the line-up... and LF Ichiro Kazumi (.273/17/63/98) had a fair season... RF Scott Sparks hit 27 homers, but batted only .247... Charley Waskins led the club in victories with an 18-17 mark with a 4.24 ERA... Emil Kaltenborn was second with a 12-20 record and a 4.01 ERA... tops in the bullpen was Timmy Hickens with a 9-5 record, 17 saves and a standout 2.03 ERA.

Southport Sun Soxx

Owner: Stage Productions, CEO Amanda Thompson
GM/Manager: Charley Oscar

Southport is located on Arvonian Island on its southeast tip. Arvonian Island, a tourist's treat, sits in the Southern Sea south of the main island and is separated from the mainland by Belair Bay. Cape Coral is on the island's north coast, Summerland on the northeast shore, Arroyo Grande on the southwest coast and San Alejo is in the mountainous interior.

Southport has a good natural port with beautiful white beaches and was settled by the British in the 1860s. They had first settled in Summerland, but thought that greater opportunities lay in the sparsely-populated southern part of the island.

Southport's population numbers about 75,000 fulltime residents, but is visited by many times that number of tourists from all over Tycobbia, Ruthlandia and recently by visitors from all over the world. The town got it start in 1870s when the "Father of Southport" Henry Banks built several hotels near the hot springs along with holiday cottages. Banks promoted Southport as "Heaven on Earth" and got the plant and factory owners on the mainland to send their workers there on holiday as a reward for their work. Banks arranged for cheap passage on ships to Southport as well. The growth intensified when he got the factory owners to close down for a week each year to service and repair the equipment. Banks got them to do it on different dates throughtout the year to insure a steady flow of tourists. As more and more industry developed in Tycobbia and Ruthlandia, the more Banks' tourist enterprise prospered and grew.

Southport's early growth and character was predicated on its pioneering use of electric power. In 1879 Banks created Southport Illuminations, lighting up the Promenade, the main downtown area, with 12 arc lamps. Banks called it "Artificial Sunshine". This was a year before Edison got the patent on the electric light bulb. Also as an attraction, Banks built was one of the world's first electric tramways running from Cocker Street to Dean Street on the Promenade. The tram has remained in continuous service to this day. Southport Illuminations has now grown to a three-mile stretch on the Promenade and lit up by 100,000 light bulbs. Tourists from all over Islandia and the world come to see the light spectacle.

In 1912 Pleasure Beach, a world-class amusement park, was the brainchild of a town alderman, William George Bean. He wanted to create "a place where adults could feel like children again". It succeeded beyond his wildest dreams and is still a huge attraction today. The amusement park includes a baseball stadium, built in 1962 for the town's industrial leagues. It is named Pleasure Beach Ballpark and is run by Stageworks Productions, a company Bean's son-in-law, Leonard Thompson, established to run Pleasure Beach. Thompson's daughter, Amanda, is the current manager and CEO. The ballpark is situated right on the seashore. You can see the beautiful blue waters of the Southern Sea beyond the outfield fences.

It was through Amanda Thompson's urging that the corporation ventured into professional baseball and obtained a franchise in the Islandian Pro Alliance. She thought it would be a great addition to Southport's tourist attractions, considering how much the Islands love baseball. That's how the Southport Sun Sox came into being.

The skipper of the Southport Sun Sox is Charlie Oscar, one of the greatest all-around player ever, who starred as in the company leagues for over 25 years. Oscar was great with the glove and the bat. He could run, throw, field, hit for average and hit with power, a true 5-tool player.

STALLIONS STAMPEDE IN SECOND HALF IN TU EAST
Trailing High Mesa by 10 games at the All-Star break, the South Fork Stallions raced past everybody in a second-half stampede to capture their second successive Tycobbian East Division flag... the Stallions skimmed by the Cowboys by a scant one-game margin... Tuckanarra and Ozarka tied for third and were four games back in the race... High Mesa had a three-game edge over South Fork going into September, but could not hold back the Stallions, who were 12-8 in the last three weeks, while the Cowpokes faded to 8-12.

1. South Fork: this is only the fifth pennant for the Stallions in the club's history... they won their only Pro Cup in 2025... offensively South Fork is just average, but good on the mound... the top twirlers are Jay Murphy (25-7/1.90), Chris Sorenson (16-12/3.36) and Big Murph McAlister (18-17/3.46)... Murphy was tied for second in the IPA with 25 victories... Southport's Billy Hoover was number one at 26-11... Summerland's Jayson Hallstrom also chalked up 25 wins with only 9 defeats... the Stallion bullpen was strong with a 2.49 ERA (2nd), headed up by the threesome of Gary Golden (2-3/2.16/5 saves), Ryan Madison (2-0/2.67/3 saves) and George Richardson (1-0/0.73)... the club offensive leader was 3B Elton Jacoby, who top them with a .307 BA, 32 HRs, 95 RBIs and 102 runs... SS Jess Wilkerson also added a good bat with a .299 BA, 23 roundtrippers, 93 RBIs and 73 runs... other decent bats were 2B Pete Arnold (.290), 1B Paul Sexton (.278) and CF Scotty O'Sullivan (.293)... the oddsmakers don't give the Stallions much regard in the playoffs... ace Murphy can't pitch every game.

2. High Mesa: the poor Cowboys thought their 40-year postseason drought was coming to an end this year, but a September swoon did them in... they last appeared in the playoffs in 2003... High Mesa won its only Pro Cup in 2002... good pitching (3.58 ERA-10th) and good firepower with 209 HRs (1st-tied) kept them in the hunt this year... they were better-than-average scoring with 725 runs (12th)... Warren Sackett (24-12/2.97) was the ace with help from Emil Nowak (17-17/3.39) and Dean Harris (16-15/4.27)... leading the way offensively was super slugger All-Star RF Corbett Brooks, who at age 40 seems to be getting better... Brooks batted .281 with 42 HRs, 104 RBIs and 104 runs... Brooks is now fifth on the all-time HR list with 693 homers... only Jack Elliott (848), Phil Gravelli (726), Marty Blake (711) and Lorne Evans (697) are ahead him... 37-year-old Evans is still active in the league... other Cowboy run producers were LF Clay Johnston (.250) with 34 HRs and 95 RBIs, 3B Johnny Tallis (.280) with 28 HRs and 88 RBIs, 2B Clifford Coleman (.268) with 26 HRs and 91 RBIs and SS Wes McGovern (.272) with 22 HRs and 64 RBIs.

3. Tuckanarra: the Blue Jays have been a first-division club the last 20 years... during that span they won three Pro Cups (2023, 2024, 2035) and 11 pennants... 2038 was the last pennant... the Tucks were fourth last year (14 GB) and moved up a spot to third this year (4 GB)... they were often within striking distance of first place, but never really seriously challenged... just an average team in most respects this season... .253 team BA (22nd) and a 3.83 team ERA (18th)... Jeff Buttrum (19-14/3.46) led the mound corps with some help from Dickie Pittman (16-12/3.92) and Junior Bristow (17-18/3.73)... Jack Rogers (6-3/1.28/23 saves) was excellent in the bullpen, tied for third in the IPA with 23 saves... Alfornso Cervera of the Hartsdale Hellcats was the leader with 27... future HOF-er and All-Star RF Lorne Evans was the club leader with a .289 BA, 37 HRs and 102 RBIs... LF Spade Weldon was the only other productive hitter with a .289 BA, 18 HRs and 79 RBIs.

4. Ozarka: the Naturals were second last year (9 GB), but fell to fourth this year (4 GB), mainly because of a poor first half (34-43)... they played well in the second half... the Nats last won the division in 2040, but have yet to take a Pro Cup trophy though they have been a Finalist on five occasions ('11, '12, '16, '19 and '20)... Ozarka is just an average club... top hurlers were Glen Jenkins (20-14/3.22) and Frank Yosarian (14-7/3.19/2 saves)... they obtained 35-year-old Yosarian in a trade with Ranford of the Ruthlandian Union in June... top performers at the plate were 3B Jimmy Woods (.298/20 HR/85/74) and RF Lonnie Gillespie (.315/10/60/86)... 1B Artie Clayton led the team in homers with 38, RBIs with 103 and tied Gillespie with 86 runs, but batted only .234 for average... SS Duffy Morrison (.263/25/79/84) also had a fairly good year.

5. Red Bluff: the Red Sox came in third last year (10 GB), but dipped to fifth this year (12 GB) with a losing record... it's been 33 years since the Red Sox made the playoffs... but they did win the Pro Cup in 2004... Jud Cox (16-15/2.28) was a very effective pitcher, but won only one more than he lost... George Reynolds (16-20/3.67) had quite a few quality starts, but a losing record... Red Bluff could go deep... they blasted 209 homers and tied High Mesa for the most in the Tycobbian Union, but batted just .250... RF David Kelso (.278) led the IPA with 56 HRs... he also led the Red Sox with 111 RBIs and 94 runs... 3B Fran Blanchard added 37 HRs and 87 RBIs with a club-high .302 BA... star CF Ike Sweetwater (.298/30/77/90) chipped in with 30 HRs... 1B Leemon O'Donovan had 29 roundtrippers and 78 RBIs, but hit only .240... LF Jesse Shaw contributed 21 HRs, 51 RBIs and scored 83 runs, while batting .293.

6. Hillsboro: the Blazers are the only franchise in the IPA that has never appeared in the playoffs... for the ninth year in a row they have wound up in the second division... last year Hillsboro was fifth (16 GB) and this year they were sixth (16 GB)... poor hitting and fairly good pitching... Ralph Quick (16-15/3.21) won the most games, but Robby Lee Stillwell (12-11/3.22/12 saves) and Steve Cooper (13-17/3.55) were also dependable starters.... in the bullpen Scott Watkins (3-4/1.76/13 saves) had a fine season... LF Jurrien Bellini was the club leader with 36 HRs, 91 RBIs and 95 runs, while batting .254... 3B Paul Butler collected 27 HRs, 73 RBIs and scored 87 runs, but hit only .250... RF Joe Jones chipped in with 20 homers, 67 RBIs and a .264 BA.

7. Midway: for the third consecutive season the Wolves have been near the bottom of the division... they were seventh this season (19 GB)... the year before Midway was seventh and 24 games back... the last postseason appearance was in 2027... the Wolves have never won a Pro Cup, but were a Finalist in 2022 when they were beaten in six games by Crystal Lake... Bobby Boy Wolf (19-15/3.39) was the biggest winner... Charlie Chase (16-18/2.72) had the best ERA... and Sam Lewis (4-3/2.23/11 saves) was effective in the pen... not very much at the plate... RF Hector Pena (.294/11/78/64), 3B Hunk Allen (.260/21/90/67) and LF Bennett Caldwell (.307/9/39/59) were the best of the lot.

8. East Point: the Panthers have been last the last two seasons, but did win the pennant in 2039... they have never won a Pro Cup... however in 2033 came close, losing out in seven games to Elnora... both the offense and pitching are pathetic... Johnny Moore (14-18/3.29) had the best ERA, while Barney Benton (15-18/5.59) won the most games... 1B Bert Henrich (.231/24/75/55) and 2B Tetsu Tanaka (.226/24/54/82) were the most productive bats, but weren't much to boast about.

SOUTH FORK STALLIONS

Owner: Bobby Ewing
GM: Finley Charles
Manager: Blackie Terranova

South Fork is a rural and provincial town with a population of 58,000. The main industries are cattle and ranching mixed with agriculture. South Fork is situated in the fertile Caledonian River basin in southern Tycobbia. Rich and black alluvial soils produce a plethora of crops on the farms in the area.

This is cowboy country and home of the South Fork Stallions of the Islandian Pro Alliance, owned by Bobby Ewing of the wealthy, influential and powerful Ewing family headed by Jock Ewing. The Stallions play in the Tycobbian Union East Division.

Bobby and brother J. R. were squabbling vice-presidents of the Waleska Westerners of the Tycobbian Industrial League. To separate the two siblings, the family patriarch bought each one of them a baseball team. Bobby got South Fork and J. R. got the Ozarka Naturals. Bobby built a beautiful new stadium and named it after his daddy, Jock Ewing Stadium. It is located at the edge of town and has a wonderful panoramic view of the town rising up behind the gigantic electronic scoreboard. J. R. built a new state-of-the-art stadium with a monstrous scoreboard, too, and named it Ellie Ewing Stadium after his mom, Miss Ellis.

Stallions fans are a rowdy bunch who love their team. They never let up on the opposing teams, giving them a lot of discouraging words and a lot of harassing at every opportunity. They even throw home run balls hit by the opposition back onto the playing field. No self-respecting Stallions fan would want possession of a ball that harmed the best interests of their favorite team.

For entertainment the Stallions have a Texas swing band at every game. You ain’t never heard a better version of “Take me out to the ballgame”. There is a whole lot of two-steppin’ during the seventh inning stretch at Jock Ewing Stadium. And when the buckaroos and buckarettes mosey on over to the concessions stands hot and juicy charcoal-broiled steak sandwiches await them there along with imported Lone Star Beer (“Brewed deep in the heart of Texas”).

Life at Jock Ewing Stadium is like “Waltzing Across Heaven”, except for the fact that Finley Charles is the Stallions’ GM and promotions director. Charles is famous for his creative promotions and innovations in baseball. His teams were the first to wear loud-colored uniforms, like solid orange road uniforms. One of his amateur teams even dressed in a soft pink and wore Bermuda shorts. He also experimented with an orange baseball and having only 3 balls and 2 strikes in the game. He said it would speed up the game and create more action. None of his leagues instituted his ideas, but he keeps trying.

Blackie Terranova is the manager of the Stallions. He starred for them for 15 seasons (2010-2024), winding up with a fine 273-202 record and a 3.31 ERA... Terranova retired at age 42. His last season was 15-21 with a 3.56 ERA for a sixth-place club.

KENWOOD CRUISES TO TU WEST TITLE
Nobody challlenged the Kenwood Wildcats this season in the weak Tycobbian West Division, only two clubs had winning records. The Wildcats scampered out to a five-game lead at the halfway mark and then zoomed away in the second half to win by 15 games to win the pennant for the second year in a row. Denton City was the distant runner-up, followed by La Claire in third place, 21 games behind and Rolling Hills in the fourth spot, 22 games out. Last year the Wildcats had a much tougher task - they had to squeak by Rolling Hills in a single-game playoff. Kenwood is a very well-rounded ballclub and should be a serious Pro Cup contender. The Wildcats last won it years ago in 2014.

1. Kenwood: the Wildcats posted the second-best record in the IPA this year with 94 victories... Southport of the TU South was number one with 100 wins... the Wildcats have few weaknesses with a .282 BA (3rd), 809 runs (3rd), 3.37 ERA (7th) and .975 FA... they come up lacking in longballs with 135 (26th)... Kenwood had pitchers galore with Rusty Bradford (22-11/2.77), Clyde Myers (19-9/3.51), Freddy Gooch (18-17/3.42), Tommy Carter (11-3/2.29) and Glen Murray (17-12/4.12) in starting roles... Artemus Hale (4-5/2.98/14 saves) was solid in the bullpen... at the plate they were paced by star All-Star C Corky DiNozzo (.304/43/114/91), All-Star 2B Country Crowder (.349/2/65/91), 3B Rod Jenkins (.272/18/84/77) and rookie 1B Aldon Belew (.294/6/72/65)... Kenwood should be one of the favorites to win this year's Pro Cup trophy.

2. Denton City: the Redbirds were the only other team in the TU West with a wiinning record... they were four games above .500... last year the Redbirds came in fifth, 13 and a half-game behind Kenwood... they had won the division in 2040... Denton City has never won a Pro Cup, but did make the Finals twice in 2005 and 2008... the Redbirds have good balance with a .254 BA (10th), 726 runs (11th), 173 HRs (12th), 3.58 ERA (11th) and a .976 FA... on the hill Francisco Salcido (17-17/2.92) is the ace, but he had help from Freddy Hogue (14-8/3.61), Harry Elliott (17-14/3.48) and Kevin Blevins (15-18/3.85)... the offense is led by superstar All-Star 1B Wayman Stetson (.301/46/137/85)... he was second to IPA RBI leader Nioka Inkamara of Wynnamac, who batted in 141 runs... 2B Morten Jonassen (.331/5/64/99) led the club in BA... RF Pete Doyle (.265/26/67/105) scored the most runs... Stetson has the most homers with 46... All-Star SS Sammy Thornton (.312/10/76/89) had another good year... LF Sadaharu Utchiyama (.301/18/83/87) also had a productive season, his second full year with the club since coming over from Ginza in 2040.

3. La Claire: it was another lackluster year for the Lynx... 21 games behind in third place... last year they were fourth and 11 and a half games out... La Claire has never captured a Pro Cup, but they have won the division in recent years (2037 and 2038)... just an average club overall... top pitchers are Marcel LaPlante (20-13/4.01) and 300-game winner Pat Kovacs (15-21/4.28)... Kovacs may be nearing the end of a great career at 38... this was his worst season ever... he is 308-228 in 18 years with a sparkling 2.84 ERA and over 4000 strikeouts... the offense is weak... no real sticks on the team... the best of the lot was RF Hank Morton, who led the club with a .318 BA (10 HR/70 RBI/67 runs)... other fair bats were CF Billy Holland (.288/17/67/76), 2B Royce Hill (.291/17/67/76) and 3B Phil Lyons (.252/20/83/72).

4. Rolling Hills: the Reds lost a heartbreaker in a playoff in 2041 (1GB), but didn't come close this year (22 GB) in fourth place... Rolling Hills has two Pro Cups won in 2029 and 2031 with the last pennant coming in 2032... they had a super stretch from 2019 to 2032 when they won eight division crowns... Matthew Christianson (19-11/2.93) was the top starter with help from Calvin Lee (17-18/3.49)... RF Jimbo Foxx (.280/48/131/113) carried the club offensively... he was third in the IPA in homers with 46, beaten only by David Kelso (56) of Red Bluff and Nioka Inkamara (49) of Wynnamac... Colchester's Blake Barrister also hit 48 out of the park... Foxx also ranked fourth in the IPA with 131 RBIs... other runs producers were LF Trent Hutchins (.271) with 30 HRs and 77 RBIs, 1B Darwin Tard (.287) with 21 roundtrippers, 100 runs and 75 RBIs... SS Buffy Kowalczyk (.300/12/68/84) was the only .300 hitter... 2B Dana Hudson (.248) banged out 25 HRs and drove in 81 runs... vet star 3B Billy Christianson (.243) is still hanging in there at age 37 with 82 RBIs and 82 runs and playing great defense.

5. Bayview: the Vikings had two good seasons back-to-back in 2040 and 2041 with second-place (8.5 GB) and third-place (26 GB) finishes... but dipped to fifth this year (26 GB)... it's been years (2016) since the Viks grace the postseason... Bayview has never won the Pro Cup trophy... they have decent batting, lousy pitching and bad defense... super slugger 3B Jerry Culpepper made the All-Star team for the ninth time in his illustrious career... Culpepper batted .321 with 44 HRs, 121 RBIs and 90 runs... SS Andreas Stokke added 29 HRs and 82 RBIs, but hit only .241... Vance Codsworth (18-17/3.70) and Johnny Young (17-15/3.61) were the top starters.

6. Chicopee: after two years in the TU West cellar, 36 and 30 games back, they improved a tare to sixth place (30 GB)... the Braves' pitching got much better, but the hitting was just about the worst in the IPA... the club hasn't made the first division since winning three consecutive pennants from 2034 to 2036... that is Chicopee's only playoff experience... they have never come close to a Pro Cup trophy... long-time vet Heyoka Chaska (18-12/3.30) had a fine year... Paul Foster (12-21/3.58) was effective at times, too... a couple of relievers Josh Dougherty (0-3/2.97) and Wakan Ko (2-1/2.60) showed some progress and potential... 16-year vet 2B Kurt Gustavsen (.307/26/77/76) was the only reliable threat in the line-up... at 36 Gustavsen is a lifetime .308 batter.

7. Arlon: after a good run from 2037 to 2040, when the Champions won a pennant and finished in the top three each year, they have fallen on hard times and dropped to seventh place the last two seasons, 23.5 GB and 37 GB... Arlon has yet to win a Pro Cup in its history, though they came close in 2039, when they lost to Waleska in six games... the Champs are just plain bad... the only quality pitcher they have is Lanny Gray (13-21/3.11)... he ranked sixth in the IPA with 269 Ks and pitched 20 complete games... top bats were RF Mark Cameron (.252) with 38 HRs and 84 RBIs, C Nick Shafer (.277) with 25 HRs and 80 RBIs, 1B Robby Westin (.288) with 23 HRs and 93 RBIs and SS Gilberto Cabral (.226) with 20 HRs and 57 RBIs.

8. Bay St. Clair: the Buccaneers have walked the plank for about a decade now... the last pennant and playoff appearance was in 2030... the last winning season was in 2035... the Bucs have no Pro Cups in its 42-year history... for the seventh straight season they finished in the second division... they rank near the bottom in scoring and pitching... Freddi Hahn (11-21/4.86), John Karlsen (14-22/5.15) and Dale Greene (10-19/4.90) all had terrible seasons... only standout reliever Clark Van Vreeland (4-5/0.42/12 saves) is a quality pitcher... the only decent bats are 3B Zip Lowery (.323/11/53/71) and C Johnny Martin (.309/5/67/49).

KENWOOD WILDCATS

Owner: Kenwood Farmers Co-op
GM/Manager: Aaron Hankins

Kenwood, a rustic and rural town of 50,000 located 25 miles off the Kelnyck Ocean in west central Tycobbia, is an agrarian area with little industry. Farms as far as the eye can see dot the landscape. Founded by English and Welsh settlers, life is like merry olde England of a century or two ago. Country inns and pubs with fine ales, fresh trout out of the crystal clear streams or a piece of juicy wild boar or game bird are always on the menu, and you can sample all of the homemade cheeses and wonderfully fresh produce of the region. Corn, wheat, barley and other grains are the main crops; dairy, pork and chicken products are important to the economy, too.

Life is peaceful and sedate in Kenwood, where tradition is important. All new construction in the town has to be approved by the Planning Board. Modern architecture is not permitted in Olde Towne, as the central downtown area is known. All buildings must be designed circa 1850 and fit in with the historic décor of the existing buildings. Even the ballpark where the Kenwood Wildcats play is an old ballpark; the fans wouldn’t have it any other way. Olde Towne can be seen over the center field and right field fences and the new part of the town over the left field fence. Olde Towne has a wonderful old-fashioned soda shoppe where you can get homemade ice cream in flavors like orange-pineapple (with bits of pineapple and orange), grape (with real grapes), strawberry (with bits of strawberry), banana (with bits of banana) and vanilla, chocolate and fudge ripple, too. Cherry cokes, vanilla cokes, chocolate cokes and thick shakes, malts and hamburgers as well. It is a great place to meet after the ballgame.

Olde Towne Grounds is perfect for the Kenwoodians. They are old-fashioned at the ballpark, too, with only cold drinks, ale, hot dogs, hamburgers, peanuts and Crackerjacks and marvelous thick milk shakes made with delicious homemade ice cream at the concession stands. And in keeping with the oldtime flavor of Kenwood, there is live organ music to entertain the fans. Only three other parks boast an organ player; Ozarka, Hillsboro and Marston.

Olde Towne Grounds is is a quaint ballpark with an asymmetrical configuration. The left field line is 380', the same as it is to straightaway center. Right field is more realistic at 350'. It was built in 1911.

The Kenwood Wildcats are owned by the Kenwood Farmers Co-op and are managed and directed by one of the all-time great home run hitters and outfielders in Tycobbian industrial league history, Aaron Hankins.

SOUTHPORT-COLFAX PRO CUP PICKS, NOD TO SOX
It's that magical time of the year in the Islands. All roads lead to the IPA Pro Cup playoffs, which begins tomorrow afternoon at four venues around Islandia. In the Ruthlandian Division Series favored Colfax will host the Wynnamac Sundowners and St. John will travel to play the Kilkenny Cats. Over in the Tycobbian Division Series the Pro Cup favorite Southport Sun Sox will be at home against the Hartsdale Hellcats, while the Kenwood Wildcats will welcoming the South Fork Stallions. All postseason series in the IPA are best-of-seven affairs. The Ruthlandian champion will meet the Tycobbian winner for the Pro Cup, emblematic of baseball supremacy in the Islands.

Trying to pick the Pro Cup champion is a difficult proposition. Just ask the experts. The Pro Cup poll has been wrong for 17 years in a row. The last time the prognosticators got it right was in 2024. In spite of the odds, the oddsmakers still try to pick the champ every year at this time. This year the Pro Cup race is wide open with lots of new faces in it. None of the perennial powerhouses made the Big Show this year. Only two repeat performers from last year are back - Kenwood and South Fork. Kilkenny is making its first-ever appearance.

For what it's worth, The Islandian Times Pro Cup poll has predicted that the Southport Sun Sox of the Tycobbian Union will defeat the Colfax Blasters of the Ruthlandian Union for the IPA Pro Cup.

1. Southport Sun Sox (100-54): three playoff appearances with no Pro Cups... the Sun Sox easily beat their all-time best record... the most they had ever won was 90 games in 2021, when they finished second... the Sun Sox have never won a Pro Cup... they were in the playoffs last in back-to-back years 2027 and 2028...

2. Kenwood Wildcats (94-60): four playoffs with one Pro Cup in 2014... the Wildcats posted the second-best record in the IPA this year with 94 victories... Southport of the TU South was number one with 100 wins... the Wildcats have few weaknesses with a .282 BA (3rd), 809 runs (3rd), 3.37 ERA (7th) and .975 FA... but they do come up lacking in longballs with 135 (26th)...

3. Hartsdale Hellcats (92-62): six postseason appearances with no Pro Cup... for the past few years the Hellcats have been a bottom-rung team, but they snapped out of it this year and climbed up from sixth to first place... Hartsdale has a good group of starters in Gil Younger (20-15/3.25), Freddie Whitaker (19-16/2.85), Perry Givens (17-11/3.00) and Bill Reeves (12-9/3.56)... in the bullpen Alfonso Cervera (8-4/2.18/27 saves) led the IPA with 27 saves... no great bats, but a bunch of good ones in LF Marv Shaw (.293/30/91/87), 1B John Ford (.283/28/86/75), 2B Greg Melson (.267/25/82/67), 3B Robinson Alomar (.276/24/91/69) and CF Darrell Nesbitt (.290/18/69/103)... a good, all-around club that dethroned the mighty North Hills Hawks this year, who won the TU North for the last eight seasons and have won four Pro Cups in the last decade... this just might be the Hellcats' year.

4. Colfax Blasters (93-61): 12 playoff appearances with one Pro Cup (2010)... also made the Finals in 2032, but were beaten by San Alejo... the Blasters came close to winning the RU West in '41, '40, '37 and '35, but managed to rev it up a bit this year to win their first division flag since 2038... they have one Pro Cup, captured in 2010... the Blasters' strong point is scoring runs... they do it with a .275 BA (5th)... they ranked third with 803 runs...

5. Kilkenny Cats (92-62): for the first time in the club's history, they have finally made the Pro Cup playoffs... the Cats have solid starters and a super bullpen... poor on defense with a .969 FA... 3B Jorge Collazo (.296/20/75/97), CF Kevin McLaglen (.267/18/98/87) and C Frank Jordan (.278/25/73/53) are the top run producers... with its good pitching the Cats have a chance to knock off some of the higher-ranked teams.

6. St. John Crusaders (86-68): six postseason appearances, but has never won a Pro Cup... they were beaten in the 2036 Finals by North Hills... last pennant came in 2036... the Crusaders improved from fourth place (9 GB) this season... the club features good offense (.278 BA-4th), pretty good pitching (3.50 ERA-8th) and solid defense (.975 FA)...

7. South Fork Stallions (85-69): four playoff appearances with one Pro Cup trophy won in 2025... offensively South Fork is just average, but good on the mound... the top twirlers are Jay Murphy (25-7/1.90), Chris Sorenson (16-12/3.36) and Big Murph McAlister (18-17/3.46)...

8. Wynnamac Sundowners (89-65): five postseason appearances with one Pro Cup trophy won in 2008... the Sundowners were much improved over 2041... the pitching ERA went from a terrible 4.66 to a fairly decent 4.02 (21st), considering the offense went from a .266 BA to a very impressive .281 (2nd)... however, they are poor defensively (.969 FA)... top bat was superstar All-Star RF Nioka Inkamara (.329/49/141/117), who had another super season leading the IPA with 141 RBIs and the RU with 49 homers...
