J.W. Porter only appeared in four games for the Richmond Braves, but I found the following photo of him in their uniform in the June 7, 1966 Richmond Times-Dispatch.

I'm going to guess that it's Wenty Ford. John L. was a catcher, and this looks like a pitcher posed with him. Wenty was a right-hander, which fits how this fellow is holding the ball. I have a photo of Wenty that shows a bit of the left side of his face, but certainly not a full profile like this one. His smile in my photo seems to be a somewhat lateral one like the one in this shot. My major concern in identifying this guy as Wenty is that usually he wore his hair rather long, and it looks like that isn't the case in this photo with John L.

The Unknown Rainier

Who is this mystery Seattle Rainier?

This came up on an image-search, and said it was from a HistoryLink page. But when I clicked the link to HistoryLink, the only picture of a player was a glamor shot of Edo Vanni, whom this clearly isn't.

So who is this (shadow of the) Mountain man?

Gordy Coleman 1953

Gordy with the Mobile Bears in 1956, just as they're converting him from OF to 1B.

(You smile now, Gordy…but you're about to go into the army for two years. Don't worry, the Indians won't forget you, though.)

Photo courtesy of the Long Beach Press-Telegram, back in 2018, when Chuck was the Oldest Surviving MLB Player, and the local press was anticipating his turning 100 that July. (He didn't make it. Died on my birthday, but don't blame me!)

Atlanta Braves 1966 Draft picks. Charlie Brown (2), John Stewert & Roger Cain. John Stewart only one that signed.

Paul Muller 1951

Muller went 2-3, 3.53 in 10 games for Wisconsin Rapids, was drafted and never played professionally again.

None of which stopped somebody from claiming in an obituary that he "pitched for the Chicago White Sox", which is really pushing it, IMO.

Mostly notable for showing us that Wisconsin Rapids was using 1948-vintage Sox unis, but what the heck. I'll post almost any pic.

Bob Speake 1939

Goodness! What un-Speake-able thing is Bob wearing?

Well, apparently that's a 1956 Los Angeles Angels uniform, and the big bands around the arms are colored red and are another iteration of "Angels" franchises' use of a "halo" theme.

But honestly, it's just making me think Bob has the biggest pit-stains in the western US.

Apparently, Gene Mauch is so stunned by the uniforms that he needs oxygen. Casey might be wondering if he needs a few breaths, too.

My goodness…so the stripes have pointillist dots on them?? Holy Sunday in the Park with Gene!

Steve Bilko 1945

Gotta say, the uniforms certainly didn't slow the 1956 Angels down, as the team went 107-61, walking away with the pennant.

Nor did they slow down Steve Bilko, who had his PCL Triple Crown season. He led the league Hits, Walks, Runs, and Slugging, too. Bilko is seen here on August 27th, hitting his 50th HR of the season. (He struggled a bit down the stretch; he had 45 blasts by the end of July, but finished with only 55,)

Gene Mauch said that the Angels were better than some major league teams he managed. Given the epic losing streaks Mauch presided over with both the 1961 Phillies and the 1969 Expos, that's not too surprising an opinion for him to hold, I shouldn't think.

Okay, I still can't excuse those 1956 LA Angels uniforms, but I'm starting to understand them now. Since this is the dull pile of laundry that manager Bob Scheffing (pictured) and the team were wearing in 1955.

Talk about an overreaction!
