xTIBBETTS WINS U.S. AMATEUR GOLF TITLE
Former Pepperdine golfer Scott xTibbetts won the US Amateur golf title by defeating E Harvie Ward Jr in the 36 hole finals on Sunday. xTibbetts clinched his victory with a birdie on the 34th hole to go up by 3 holes with just 2 to play. Prior to the final 9 it was an extremely close match. In the morning round neither golfer ever led by more than one hole and it was all even after the first 18. The afternoon round started much like the morning and 9 holes in the two golfers were still deadlocked.

However, things fell apart for Ward on the 10th hole when he bogeyed it while xTibbetts managed a par. xTibbetts took the first 2 hole lead of the finals when he parred the 11th while Ward had his second straight bogey.

The victory earns xTibbetts an invitation to all 4 major professional tournaments next year and, should he choose to turn pro, an automatic PGA tour card. xTibbetts has enjoyed some real success in the PGA events he has competed in as an amateur this season. His best showing was a second place tie at the Phoenix Open. He also finished 4th in Memphis.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
ZOLDAK SHUTOUT PROPELS BROWNS INTO SECOND PLACE
Sam Zoldak pitched a 5-hit shutout to lead the St Louis Browns past Boston 2-0 and move the Browns ahead of the Red Sox and into second place in the American League. Zoldak also drove in one of the 2 St Louis runs off of Boston starter Earl Johnson. Johnson (13-8) also surrendered just 5 hits.

The Browns remain 4.5 games behind first place Cleveland after the Indians dropped the Senators in Washington by a 6-1 count. Jeff Heath doubled, tripled and drove in 3 runs to pace the Cleveland attack. Trade deadline pickup Warren Spahn tossed a 5-hit complete game to run his record to 12-9 but he is 2-0 with the Indians.

Shortstop Skeeter Newsome and catcher Tommy Heath each drove in 3 runs as Philadelphia beat up on the Yankees 12-3. Fred Caligiuri went 7 innings for the win to improve his record to 14-9.

In Chicago 29 year old career minor leaguer Tex Shirley won his first major league start as the White Sox topped Detroit 5-3. Shirley, who has been with 3 different organizations in his 5 year career, made his major league debut in relief earlier in the season. He allowed 7 hits and 1 earned run in 7 innings work.

PHILLIES PULL EVEN WITH PIRATES ATOP NATIONAL LEAGUE
A 3-run rally in the top of the 7th inning keyed by a 2-out 2-run Joe Gordon single led the Philadelphia Phillies past St Louis 4-2 and back into a tie with Pittsburgh atop the National League. Max Macon, who got the win to improve to 11-5, combined with 3 relievers to hold the Cardinals to just 6 hits.

Meanwhile in Brooklyn the Pittsburgh Pirates suffered a rare loss with Cliff Melton on the hill. Melton allowed just 1 earned run but 3 Pirates error helped Brooklyn to a 3-2 victory and a second straight victory over Pittsburgh. Bob Elliott had a pair of hits for the Bucs to take over top spot in the National League batting race. Elliott was the only Buc to have much success against former teammate Alex Carrasquel. Carrasquel spent 3 and a half season in the Pirates bullpen before being dealt to the Dodgers last week. He pitched 8 innings to earn his first victory as a starter. Mickey Harris tossed a scoreless 9th inning for his 7th save of the year.

Johnny Mize's 11th homer of the season helped Cincinnati past Boston 6-5 and earned Reds starter Harry Feldman his 13th win of the year. In the other game Harlond Clift belted his 20th homer of the season while Paul Erickson pitched a 5-hit shutout as the Cubs blanked the Giants 6-0.

ZOLDAK AND HEAD NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
St Louis Browns pitcher Sam Zoldak was named the American League's top performer for the past seven days. Zoldak was 2-0 with a 2.20 era and threw a complete-game shutout. For the season his record sits at 10-9 with a 3.87 era. It was the second time in his three year career he has been named player of the week.

National League player of the week honours go to Cubs pitcher Ed Head. He was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with a 2.50 era and he tossed his first shutout of the season. On the year Head is 12-10 with a 4.05 era. This is his first player of the week award although he was named NL Pitcher of the month in June of 1944.

Head has had an interesting career. He homered in his major league debut, made the allstar team and was named National League rookie of the year while with the Dodgers in 1942. Midway through the 1943 campaign he was dealt to the Braves for pitcher Stan Ferens and two weeks later the Braves dealt him to the Cubs for pitcher Al Javery. An injury cost Head a good part of the 1945 season and when he struggled upon his return he was moved to the bullpen. He spent all of last season in the pen before this year, at age 29, he is getting another shot in the rotation.

Head is 3-1 in 4 postseason starts with a 2.50 era. He completed all 4 of his World Series starts. Ironically the only season he was on a World Series winner was 1945 when he did not appear in the series. Two of his starts came for Brooklyn 1942 and 2 for the Cubs in 1944. In both of those season the National League entrant lost to the Yankees.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON
RAMS DROP CHARGERS 28-16
Rod Dugans led the St Louis Rams to an early 21-0 lead and the reserves hung on to beat San Diego 28-16 in week 1 preseason action. Dugans engineered two first quarter scoring drives while completing 7 out of 8 passes. Reserve RB Jimmy Tucker saw plenty of time with the first team and he rushed for 63 yards on 10 carries including a 16 yard touchdown scamper. The Chargers first team was unable to accomplish anything against the Rams defense but when Dameane Taylor took over at QB in the second half San Diego began to move the ball. Taylor, who started 8 games for the Chargers a year ago, is battling with Leon Jones and former Jacksonville signal caller Justin Jackson for the starting job.

BALTIMORE 20 WASHINGTON 17
In Washington, veteran backup JC Wulfeck passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns but Wulfeck's fumble with 41 seconds remaining cost the Redskins in a 20-17 loss to Baltimore. Wolfeck and fullback Dick Riffle botched a handoff and Ravens CB Joey German scooped up the loose ball and ran 62 yards for the winning score. It was German's second fumble recovery of the game.

SEATTLE 40 KANSAS CITY 17
Reserve running back Fred Nutter scored two touchdowns and picked up 102 combined rushing and receiving yards as Seattle dropped Kansas City 40-17. Nutter's performance overshadowed the debut of Heisman Trophy winner Glenn *Davis. The Seahawks first round pick ran 11 times for 64 yards and also had 3 receptions. The play of Davis and Nutter may mean last year's first round pick Marion *Motley will be the odd man out in the Seattle backfield. Motley had a dissappointing rookie season and gained just 6 yards on 4 carries yesterday.

Speaking of odd man out Chiefs QB Ulish Groce is in a battle to retain his starting job a year after leading Kansas City to it's first-ever playoff berth. Groce completed 7 of 12 passes for 65 yards but was intercepted once. His competion is Tommy *Thompson, the Chiefs first round pick a year ago who was hurt in the preseason and spent the entire year on the injured reserve list. Thompson completed 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

SAN FRANCISCO 17 NY JETS 6
Two second half touchdowns gave the San Francisco 49ers a 17-6 victory over the Jets in New York. RB Russ Davis led the 49ers attack with 66 yards rushing including a touchdown carry.

ATLANTA 36 OAKLAND 25
Antwain Anderson carried the ball just 7 times but two of his carries were for first quarter touchdowns. The Atlanta Falcons never looked back from that point and went on to beat Oakland 36-25. That spoiled the debut of rookie QB Tommy Maddox for the Raiders. The former Navy star was selected in the second round and is expected to give incumbant Antwan Baker a run for the starting job. In limited action Maddox completed 3 of 6 passes for 29 yards.

ARIZONA 27 TENNESSEE 23
A 46 yard touchdown pass from Dick Cappleman to Bob Zatkoff with just over a minute remaining gave Arizona a 27-23 victory over Tennessee.

He is certainly a very good player and it took all I had to come out on top. It was a field full of terrific golfers and also really swell guys and I'm very pleased to be able to hold this prestigious trophy. Thank you all very much."

The big question is "Will Mr. Tibbetts turn pro or will he choose to remain an amateur in hopes of defending his title next year?"

Do I really need to decide that? And if so, when?

You can decide if you like or I will flip a coin. No rush. You will compete as an amateur in remaining tournaments unless you elect to turn pro. I am hoping to have enough fictional golfers added so I can have a Q-school tournament over the offseason to help fill out the tournament entries.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
REDS RALLY PAST PHILS 5-4
Andy Kampouris had 4 hits including a game-winning rbi single in the top of the 9th to lead the Cincinnati Reds past the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4. The loss drops the Phils a half game behind the idle Pittsburgh Pirates atop the National League standings. Joe Medwick also chipped in with 3 hits for the Reds who climb back to .500 on the season.

In other National League action the Chicago Cubs crept to within 3 games of Pittsburgh with a 7-2 win in Boston. Vern Olsen went the distance for the Cubs to earn his major league leading 18th victory of the season. Phil Rizzuto hit a leadoff homer, his 11th of the season, to spark a 4 run first inning and the Cubs never looked back.

In a battle between the basement dwellers Bill Rigney homered and drove in 4 runs as the New York Giants dumped Brooklyn 5-2.

In the American League the St Louis Browns took 3 of 4 games from the Boston Red Sox including a 9-2 thumping yesterday. St Louis pitcher Archie McKain allowed just 8 hits and had a pair himself, including a 2-run double.

The Cleveland Indians remain 4.5 games ahead of St Louis after beating Washington 5-1. Ray Poat and Johnny Babich combined on a 6-hitter for the winners. 5 different Indians had RBI's and only lead-off man Lou Boudreau had more than one hit.

In Detroit Virgil Trucks blanked the Chicago White Sox 4-0 on a 6-hitter. Tommy Henrich had 3 hits including a homerun for the winners. The only other game was a 13 inning marathon won 3-2 by the Yankees on a Bud Metheny rbi single.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON
LAFLEEUR LEADS PANTHERS PAST BRONCOS 27-16
Carolina Panthers QB Jesse LaFleur showed signs of regaining the form that made him an NFC second team allstar in both 1943 and 1944. LaFleur, who has been bothered by injuries the past 3 seasons and attempted just 18 passes during that time, threw a pair of touchdown strikes to lead the Carolina Panthers past the Broncos in Denver 27-16. LaFleur completed 13 of 16 passes for 250 yards. The starting job likely will still belong to Javon Jamieson, who took over when LaFleur was injured in the preseason of 1945 and has been the starter ever since. Jamieson completed 3 of 6 passes in limited action. Panthers rookie RB Herm *Wedermeyer gained 24 yards on 7 carries.

The bright spot for Denver was the play of first round pick Elbie *Nichol. The former Cincinnati Bearcat receiver had 5 catches for 58 yards including his first touchdown. Starting QB Jay Cason is facing some competition from backup Gary Chase but neither looked impressive in a limited role yesterday.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PIRATES WIN A WILD ONE IN CINCINNATI
The Pittsburgh Pirates scored three times in the top of the 8th inning to beat the Cincinnati Reds 11-10 in National League play. The Pirates had led 8-4 in the 7th before the Reds erupted for 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th chasing Pirates starter Preacher Roe. Joe Medwick's bases-loaded double and a 2-run pinch-hit homer off the bat of Jimmy Ripple were the big blows for the Reds. The Reds lead was shortlived as Cincinnati reliever Ewell Blackwell quickly gave up a lead-off double to Billy Myers, walked Ralph Kiner and then served up a 3-run homer to Bob Elliott to make it 11-10 Bucs. Elliott had a huge game for the Pirates, getting 4 hits and scoring 4 runs to go with his 3 rbi's. The victory moves the Pirates a full game ahead of idle Philadelphia atop the National League standings.

In Boston, Hank Wyse tossed a 3-hitter as the Chicago Cubs dumped the Braves 9-1. Andy Pafko had 4 hits and catcher Ken O'Dea drove in 4 runs for the winners. In the only other National League game rookie Jackie Robinson had 3 hits and drove in 2 runs to lead Brooklyn past the New York Giants 3-1.

SENS STOP FELLER AND INDIANS 4-1
Fred Hutchinson outduelled Bob Feller to lead the Washington Senators past the Cleveland Indians 4-1 in American League action. The win moves the Sens back over the .500 mark and gets them with 7.5 games of the front-running Indians. Hutchinson pitched 8 innings of 5-hit ball and contributed at the plate: his 2-run double with 2 out in the 6th inning snapped what was a 1-1 tie.

In other American League games George Staller's second career homer, a 3-run pinch-hit shot in the bottom of the 8th inning gave the Philadelphia Athletics a 6-3 win over New York. In Detroit Al Jurisch improved his record to 16-9 as he pitched the Tigers past Chicago 2-1. Outfielder Dick Wakefield had an rbi double for the Tigers but was injured sliding into second base and will be lost for the season with a torn stomach muscle. Wakefield was hitting .323 at the time of his injury, good for 5th in the league.

BOXING
GAGNON HAS EASY TIME WITH OLIVERA
Former World Bantamweight Champion Fernando Gagnon had little trouble outpointing San Francisco native Tony Olivera in a 10 round bout in Vancouver. All 3 judges scored it 99-92 for the Quebec fighter who improves to 33-4-1. The loss, Olivera's second straight, drops his record to 25-4-2.

Gagnon is hoping to get another shot at the world title which he lost to Luis Romero in May. Romero lost the title in his first defense to Cuba's Luis Galvani.

Upcoming bouts this week include Cuban flyweight Black Pico taking on Little Dado, who hails from the Phillipines. Pico is 16-2 and well on his way to a title shot. Dado had a title shot but after fighting to a draw with Teddy Gardner in the finals of the postwar tournament he lost by unanimous decision in the rematch. Since then Dado lost to Jackie Paterson, who would later beat Gardner for the flyweight title. Dado is 19-4-2. The fight will take place in Havana on Friday.

Saturday night in St Louis World Featherweight champion Willie Pep puts his 18-0 record on the line against Missouri native Charlie Riley. Riley, 23-4, is coming off a knockout victory over then number one contender Harold Hoshino. Pep's last fight was a unanimous decision over European champ Ray Famechon.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
PRESGRAVES RESIGNS WITH COLONELS
Trevor Presgraves, who averaged 18.8 ppg for the Kentucky Colonels last season, has agreed to a 6 year deal with the Colonels. The former standout PG at Notre Dame was named All-League first team a year ago. He started 72 games for the Colonels last season.

In other signing news the Boston Celtics inked center Hagen Ochoa. The 6'11 Ochoa was a member of Dallas' world championship team last year after spending the first four years of his career with Cleveland. He averaged 7.6 ppg and 6.7 rpg coming off the bench last year. The former Mississippi State star had expected to start for Dallas but lost his job due to the outstanding play from undrafted rookie John Layton.

JOHN LAYTON
Layton is also a free agent and probably the most interesting story in the league. A 3-time SWC player of the year and National Player of the Year his senior season, the University of Texas product was bypassed in the NBA draft as scouts felt his lack of athleticism would not allow him to compete at the pro level. Dallas gave him a chance in training camp and he showed enough to make the Chaps roster to start the season. By midseason he was seeing a fair amount of playoff time and he made the starting 5 in January. The rest is history. He averaged 15.7 ppg and 7.2 rpg in the playoffs leading the Chaps to their first league title. Despite starting just 29 games he was named 2nd team all-rookie. Since he just signed the one year deal with Dallas as a non-drafted free agent he is free to negotiate with any team and at age 24 he is the mostly highly sought free agent available.

FOOTBALL
CANADIAN FOOTBALL SEASON DEBUTS SEPTEMBER 1

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
LAYTON SIGNS WITH PHILADELPHIA WARRIORS
What a difference a year makes. After not being selected in last year's BAA draft former University of Texas standout John Layton had to settle for an invite to the training camp of the Dallas Chapparels as a non-roster player. He spent most of the first half of the season on the bench but when he finally did get a chance to start Layton made the most of it. He blossomed in the playoffs, averaging over 15 points and 7 rebounds a game, and led the Chaps to their first ever league title.

Because he was only signed to a 1 year deal by Dallas he was free to negotiate with any BAA team this offseason. Virtually every team in the league was interested in the 24 year old center but when the dust settled it was the Philadelphia Warriors who had him signed to a 5 year contract.

The Warriors hope the Clinton, Mississippi native will be the final piece to get the franchise it's third world championship, somthing that has eluded the Warriors for a decade. Last season they finished second to Baltimore in the Atlantic Division but lost to Pittsburgh in the opening round of the playoffs.

For Layton, leaving the state of Texas where he has become something of a basketball god, will certainly be a new experience. Layton led Texas to three staight NCAA appearances including their first ever elite 8 appearance. He graduated as the NCAA all-time career scoring leader with 2262 points. Three time SWC player of the year Layton is the conference career leader in points, rebounds and free throw attempts. Layton capped his college career by winning National Player of the Year Honours in 1945-46.

CELTICS PICK PAIR OF PIPERS
The Boston Celtics continue to make waves in the free agent pool agreeing to contracts with a pair of former Pittsburgh Pipers just a day after they signed ex-Dallas center Hagen Ochoa. SG Rob Rodriguez and PF Mash Prior are the two newest Celtics after both rejected offers to remain with the Pipers.

Rodriguez, a 9 year veteran, spent his entire career with the Pipers after being selected 5th overall in the 1938 draft from USC. He averaged a career best 14.6 ppg last season and was named to the All-Defensive second team. Prior also spent his entire career with the Pipers after being selected 15th overall from Oregon in 1940. He averaged 9.8 ppg and 5.5 rpg last season.

The Celtics also announced that veteran SF Leverne Jones has been resigned. Jones had 11.3 ppg for the Celtics a year ago, starting 65 games. The ex-UCLA Bruin has spent the past 3 seasons in Boston after 9 years with Providence.

The Pipers did not lose all of their free agents to Boston. 11 year veteran Byron Swygart, who has played 763 games in a Pipers uniform, has agreed to a 2 year deal to remain in Pittsburgh. The SF from Indiana will be entering his 12th BAA campaign. He started 74 games and averaged 14.9 ppg last year.

In other signing news Chicago has resigned 2 key pieces of it's division champion from a year ago. First team allstar PF Vin Concepcion has agreed to a 4 year deal with the Stags while SF Ray *Sundquist signed a 6 year deal.

Vernon Stout, who has spent his entire 10 year pro career in Indianapolis, agreed to another 3 years with the Olympics. The former University of Kentucky star averaged 12.1 ppg a year ago and teamed with center George *Mikan to form an imposing presence down low.

Kaanan Gochneaur plans to finish his career in Providence. Taken first overall 10 years ago by the Steamrollers, the PG agreed to a 5 year deal yesterday. The former Illinois star averaged 14.1 ppg and 7.1 rpg a year ago.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
LOHRMAN IMPROVES TO 12-1 AS TRIBE STRETCH LEAD
Bill Lohrman ran his record to 12-1 and lowered his major league leading era to 1.18 as the Cleveland Indians beat Chicago 3-1 in American League action. Lohrman, who missed a month and a half with a shoulder injury, scattered 6 hits over 8 innings of work. Ed Klieman took over in relief for the Indians and pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Rightfielder Jim Gleeson led the Cleveland offense with 3 hits including an rbi triple, and scored a pair of runs. The victory allowed the Indians to stretch their lead on second place St Louis to 5 games after the Browns lost 5-2 to New York despite outhitting the Yankees 12-7.

Third place Boston also lost yesterday. Homeruns from Eddie Morgan and Buddy Blattner led the Philadelphia Athletics past the Red Sox 5-2 dropping Andy Karl's record to 16-6. After starting the season 13-3 the Boston ace has lost 3 of his last 6 starts.

The only other American League contest was a slugfest as Detroit beat Washington 15-11 in a game that saw 32 base hits. Bobby Thomson with 4 rbi's and Buddy Rosar with 3 led the Tigers offense. Les Fleming had 4 hits and scored 4 runs for the Senators. 11 pitchers made an appearance in the game.

In the lone National League game Joe Medwick delivered a rbi double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Cincinnati a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Bucs had tied the game in the top of the ninth on a run scoring single off the bat of Arky Vaughan. The win moves the Reds back to .500 while the Pirates lead on Philadelphia shrinks to half a game.

BROWNS, RED SOX FADING FROM PENNANT RACE
The St Louis Browns and Boston Red Sox are watching their chances of overtaking the Cleveland Indians begin to fade away. The Indians won again yesterday while both the Browns and Red Sox lost leaving St Louis 6 games back and Boston 7.5 behind the front-runners.

St Louis, with just 4 wins in the their last 14 games, fell 4-1 at home to the New York Yankees. Eddie Lopat tossed a 5-hitter for the Browns but St Louis could give him little offensive support. The Red Sox have lost 5 straight after Philadelphia scored 3 times in the top of the 10th to beat Boston 5-2 yesterday. Meanwhile the Indians have won 5 of their last 6 games after beating Chicago 9-2 yesterday. Reserve 2B Lou Klein hit a bases-loaded triple and veteran outfielder Jeff Heath drove in a pair of runs to lead the Cleveland offense. Warren Spahn went the distance to run his record to 13-9.

In the other American League game Tommy Henrich had 3 hits to help Detroit double Washington 6-3.

MELTON AND MULCAHY SHINE FOR NL LEADERS
Cliff Melton tossed a 2-hit shutout to improve his record to 13-7 and lower his NL leading era to 1.89 as Pittsburgh blanked the New York Giants 7-0. Bob Elliott hit his 16th homer of the season to lead the Pirates who remain a half game ahead of Philadelphia atop the National League standings.

The Phillies got a tremendous pitching performance of their own as Hugh Mulcahy won his 13th game by tossing a complete game 3-hitter in a 4-0 win over Boston. Buster Adams bases loaded double in the first inning provided all the offense Mulcahy would require.

Pitching was also the word of the day in Brooklyn where the Cardinals and Dodgers hooked up in a 14 inning marathon. Starters Ernie White and Alex Carrasquel left in the 9th and 10th respectively with the game still scoreless. Both bullpens kept it 0-0 until the Cardinals ended the scoring drought with a Cully Rikard single followed by a Glenn Crawford RBI double to start the 14th inning. The Dodgers could not score in the home half and it ended 1-0 St Louis.

There was no shortage of offense in Cincinnati where the visiting Chicago Cubs outscored the Reds 12-7. Harlond Clift paced the Chicago attack with 3 hits and a pair of RBI's. Eddie Lukon drove in 5 runs in a losing cause for Cincinnati. Neither starting pitcher made it past the 4th inning, at which time the score was 8-7 Cubs.

CUSHING LEADS RAIDERS PAST PATS 13-3
Johnny Cushing ran for 67 yards and the games only touchdown to lead the Oakland Raiders past the New England Patriots 13-3 in week two preseason action. The victory came at a heavy price for the Raiders who lost backup QB Tony Hall indefinately with a neck injury. One QB who looked very good for Oakland was rookie Tom Maddox. The second round pick from Navy threw for 97 yards and engineered the Oakland touchdown drive. Maddox is battling with Antwan Baker for the starting job. Baker completed just 3 of 7 pass attempts for 26 yards. The Pats defense, which was awful in a loss to Tampa last week, looked much better this time out but the offense failed to come up with any sort of consistancy all game. The victory evens the Raiders preseason record at 1-1 while the Pats fall to 0-2.

MILNER RESIGNS WITH JAZZ
The BAA's career scoring leader has decided he will finish his career with the New Orleans Jazz. Ethan Milner, who with 23,913 career points has scored over 5000 more than any other player in league history, agreed to a 1 year deal with the Jazz. The 36 year old hinted it would be his final season in the league. He has spent the past 4 seasons in New Orleans after 10 years with Dallas. While he was never named league MVP the former SMU star did make 7 postseason allstar teams and won a pair of World Championships in his career.

New Orleans also signed reserve PF Carlos Ouk to a 4 year deal. He had spent the past 3 seasons in Buffalo after the Braves drafted him 15th overall in 1944.

In other signing news
The Minneapolis Lakers agreed to a 4 year deal with former Indianapolis PG Ahmed Williams. Williams, who has spent his entire 8 year career with the Olympians, averaged 9.3 ppg and 6.3 apg in starting 73 games last year. The 29 year old played his college ball at Mississippi State.

Small forward Jonathan Hackett has decided to remain in Indianapolis. Hackett, who has played the past 3 seasons with the Olympians after stints in Minneapolis and St Louis, agreed to a 3 year deal. He started 70 games for Indianapolis last season and averaged 11.7 ppg. Dallas resigned SF Jelani Sides. The Harvard grad started 68 games last season for the World Champion Chaparrals, averaging 10.6 ppg. He has spent two seasons in Dallas after 7 years with Indianapolis. PF Frank Soto will remain in Baltimore after agreeing to a 5 year extension with the Bullets. Soto scored 11.7 ppg and helped Baltimore reach the league championship series.

Former Oregon Duck John *Abramovic had his option picked up by the New York Knickerbockers. The third year SF averaged just 23.5 minutes a game last year but still scored 11.1 ppg. Finally Syracuse extended the contract of center Damond Bothman. Taken 3rd overall by Kansas City in 1944 Bothman was dealt to the Nationals his rookie season and has improved each of his 3 years in the league. Last season he started 69 games for Syracuse and averaged 8.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg.

FORMER BASEBALL STAR BYRD SHARES LEAD AT COLONIAL
Art Wall and Sam Byrd share the lead after the first round of the Colonial Invitational Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. The pair each shot 6 under par 64 on the opening day of the 4 round event and enjoy a 1 stroke lead on Johnny Bulla and Charles Ward.

Byrd is better known as the centerfielder for the New York Yankees. The Yankees released him recently and he decided to concentrate full time on his golf career. Tour money winner Ben Hogan is in a group of 5 golfers two strokes off the pace.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
NL LEADERS KEEP WINNING
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies remain seperated by the narrowest margins atop the National League standings after both posted victories yesterday. In Pittsburgh Ralph Kiner homered and Dick Siebert drove in 3 runs to pace the Pirates past New York 8-2. Vic Raschi, now firmly entrenched in the Pirates rotation after a stint in the pen, pitched 8 innings of 6 hit ball to improve his record to 5-11. Meanwhile in Boston, Del Ennis hit a 3-run homer and Max Macon won his 12th game as the visiting Phillies downed the Braves 4-1.

In other National League action Jimmy Outlaw singled in Joe Dimaggio with the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th to give Cincinnati a 3-2 win over Chicago. Rex Barney pitched 8 solid innings to lead Brooklyn past St Louis 4-2.

In the American League the Cleveland Indians won again, scoring all their runs in the second inning and hanging on to beat Chicago 3-2. Danny Litwhiler had 3 hits including a homer and drove in both Chicago runs. Litwhiler leads the American League in rbi's.

The second place Browns lost 3-2 to New York. Dixie Walker's 7th inning homer accounted for all of the Yankee offense. Third place Boston managed to keep pace with the Indians by beating Philadelphia 9-2 at Fenway. Bobby Doerr had 3 hits including a homer and drove in 4 runs for the Red Sox. Earl Johnson got the win to improve his record to 14-8.

In the other game Washington outslugged Detroit 7-5 as Jimmy Haynes won his 13th game of the season for the Sens.

GAYLE BREAKS FOOT IN TITANS LOSS
Tennessee Titans starting QB Manfred Gayle, a first team AFC allstar a year ago, suffered a broken foot in the Titans 42-20 loss to Buffalo yesterday. The injury could cause the 6th year pro to miss up to the first 4 weeks of the regular season. With Gayle's injury the starting assignment likely falls to backup Terry Kocher, who started 3 games a year ago when Gayle was sidelined. Kocher threw for 109 yards and one touchdown yesterday. The big story aside from the Gayle injury was the running of Buffalo rookie Buddy *Young. The second round pick from Illinois gained 105 yards on 10 carries. He also scored 3 touchdowns. The Bills even their preseason record at 1-1 while the Titans fall to 0-2.

In Houston, the Texans intercepted 4 Denver passes enroute to a 30-17 victory over the Broncos. Brad Johnson ran for 87 yards and a touchdown while E.G. Atoe threw for 94 yards and a score to lead the Houston offense. Four different Houston defenders picked off a pass including DE William Lester who rambled 15 yards into the endzone after his pick. The Texans improve to 2-0 while Denver falls to 0-2. One of the few bright spots for Denver was rookie Elbie *Nichol who had 3 catches including a touchdown reception.

PEP DEFENDS FEATHERWEIGHT CROWN TONIGHT
Willie Pep puts his 18-0 record and his World Featherweight title on the line tonight in St Louis against challenger Charlie Riley. Pep, from Hartford, is coming off of an easy decision win over European champion Ray Famechon last April. Riley, with a 23-4 postwar record, is rated the 6th best featherweight in the world. The St Louis native most recently defeated fellow top 10 contender Harold Hoshino by unanimous decision in May.

Last night in Havana flyweight contender Black Pico won a unanimous decision over Little Dado. With the win Pico improves to 17-2 and is certainly deserving of a shot at World Flyweight champion Jackie Paterson. For Dado the loss is his third straight and drops his record to 19-5-2. The 27 year old appears to be nearing the end of his career as he looks to have lost much of his quickness and has had trouble making weight for his recent bouts.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
PIPERS INK FRY
The Pittsburgh Pipers have resigned an old friend in Ryan Fry. The small forward, who spent 5 years in Pittsburgh beginning in 1939, has passed up an offer to remain with Philadelphia in order to return to the Pipers. The 12th year pro started 70 games for the Warriors last season and averaged 16.2 ppg. In addition to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Fry has also played for Baltimore and Chicago. He was selected first overall by the Stags out of North Carolina in the 1935 draft. While never an allstar, Fry has always been a solid player with a decent scoring touch. The big question is where will he play for the Pipers. With Byron Swygart already entrenched at SF there is a good chance Fry may be moved to SG.

The Pipers also inked former Minneapolis PF Kevin Stewart. The 8th year pro, who has also played for the Knickerbockers and Warriors since leaving the University of Kentucky, averaged 5.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg last year.

Indianapolis has signed 7-time MVP Draper Lytell to a 1 year contract. While the 37 year old, who spent most of his career with Philadelphia, is well past his prime, Lytell can still contribute off the bench. The point guard had 7.3 ppg coming off the bench for Chicago last season. Indianapolis also resigned SF Javier Meade to a 4 year deal. Meade average 6.3 ppg last season, his third year since being drafted 7th overall from Princeton.

The Kansas City Kings added former Providence SG Sol Cooper. The ex-Ohio State Buckeye began his career in Cleveland before joining the Steamrollers 2 years ago. Cooper started 20 games last season and averaged 10.2 ppg. He will backup Kings star SG Gabriel Brown.

In other signing news Minneapolis resigned backup center Logan Conyers to a 3 year deal. He averaged 4.7 ppg and 4.9 rpg for the Lakers a year ago.

Thanks. The best part for me is just how engrossed I have become in this universe. There is so much more going on I would like to document but I fear it is already too detailed so I constantly pull back on the amount of coverage.

BOXING
PEP RETAINS FEATHERWEIGHT CROWN WITH TKO WIN
Willie Pep improved his perfect record to 19-0 as he had little trouble beating Charlie Riley in the challenger's hometown of St Louis. Pep clearly won every round before the referee stopped the fight in the 13th when Riley was sent to the canvas for the third time in the bout. Riley did beat the count and get back on his feet but both of his eyes were such a mess the referee had no choice but to stop the bout.

Riley, who looked so good in his last fight against contender Harold Hoshino, was no match for the champion. The loss drops Riley's record to 23-5 and further illustrates just how dominant Pep is in the division. Each of Pep's three postwar title defenses have been extremely lobsided affairs. Next up for Pep is likely Henry Armstrong, who is 30-2. However, Armstrong is coming off of a loss to Sandy Saddler who was easily beaten by Pep last year. Before Pep fights a serious contender he has scheduled a pair of fights in Los Angeles over the next couple of months. He is slated to face Chico Rosa on August 30th and Georgie Hansford on September 22nd. Rosa is 25-10-2 while Hansford is 21-13.

The next big fight is Friday night when another undefeated champion puts his title on the line. Heavyweight champ Joe Louis (9-0) meets Ezzard Charles (20-1) at Madison Square Garden. Charles suffered his only postwar defeat at the hands of Louis last September in the post war tournament title matchup. Since then Charles has beaten top 10 fighters Tommy Gomez and Clarence Henry both via knockout. Louis, who beat Charles with an 8th round TKO, has won by 4th round knockout over both Tami Mauriello and Nathan Mann in his recent bouts.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PHILLIES MOVE AHEAD OF BUCS IN NATIONAL LEAGUE RACE
Charley Schanz and two relievers combined on a 7 hit shutout as the Philadelphia Phillies blanked Boston 2-0. Schanz also drove in a run as he improved his record to 17-9. The other Philadelphia run came on Ray Sanders 11th homer of the season. That win, coupled with Pittsburgh's 5-4 loss at home to New York, moved the Phillies a half game ahead of the Pirates atop the National League standings.

The Giants beat Pittsburgh with 2 runs in the top of the 9th after Tom Ferrick had taken over for Preacher Roe on the hill for the Bucs. Sid Gordon and Vince Dimaggio each had 3 hits, including rbi's singles in the 9th to pace the New York attack.

Elsewhere Gene Scharein homered and Walker Cooper had 3 hits as St Louis blasted Brooklyn 7-1 while Stan Ferens pitched a 4-hit shutout to improve his record to 10-6 in Cincinnati's 5-0 win over Chicago.

The top 3 teams in the American League all suffered losses yesterday so the Cleveland Indians lead remains at 7 games over St Louis and 7.5 on Boston. Danny Litwhiler drove in 3 runs as the Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland 9-3. The Yankees completed a 4-game sweep of St Louis with a 3-2 win. In Boston, Rudy York homered twice to lead the Philadelphia A's past the Red Sox 10-5.

The other game saw Detroit score 3 unearned runs enroute to a 4-1 win over Washington. Al Jurisch allowed just 4 hits in 8 innings for the Tigers to get his 17th win of the season. Former Tiger Fred Hutchinson took the loss and falls to 14-13 despite allowing just 5 Detroit hits in the game. 3 Washington errors including two from 3B Buddy Lewis proved the difference in the game.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON WEEK TWO
GROCE MAKES BID TO KEEP STARTING JOB IN KC
Ulish Groce took a step forward in his battle with Tommy *Thompson for the starting quarterback job in Kansas City. Groce passed for 107 yards and engineered two scoring drives in the Chiefs 16-7 victory over Pittsburgh. *Thompson, who missed all of last season with an injury, did not fare too badly either. He completed 5 of 8 pass attempts for 60 yards but failed to put any points on the board. Bruce Jones 4 yard run in the first quarter finished off a 75 yard drive and accounted for the only touchdown of the game. Kansas City rookie DT Weldon *Humble notched his first sack. The win evens the Chiefs record at 1-1 while the Steelers drop to 0-2.

COLTS 30 REDSKINS 13
Free agent pickup Eric Poppinga had another big game for Indianapolis. The ex-Giants signal caller passed for 142 yards and 1 touchdown to help the Colts past a disinterested Washington squad 30-13. Sammy *Baugh was awful for the Redskins, overthrowing receivers consistantly and getting picked off twice. The Colts are 2-0 while the Redskins drop to 0-2.

PANTHERS 20 EAGLES 17
Running back Dee Irvin turned a little swing pass into a 54 yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to give the Carolina Panthers a 20-17 victory over Philadelphia. The Panthers pass rush had a dominant game, registering 5 sacks including two from DE Renaldo Lewis. On the down side for the Panthers, QB Jesse LaFleur, who looked so good a week ago against Denver, completed just 1 of 6 pass attempts and was picked off twice. LaFleur is trying to regain the starting job he lost to Javon Jamieson two years ago.

JETS 20 BENGALS 9
Despite passing for well over 300 yards the Cincinnati Bengals were held to just 3 field goals in a 20-9 loss to the New York Jets. The Jets got a 35 yard touchdown catch from superstar RB Steve *Van Buren and a 75 yard fumble return for a touchdown from all-pro defensive lineman Paul Jones. Jets QB Keith Reeves threw for 167 yards but he was overshadowed by Cincinnati's Bud Rutledge who threw for 177. Backup Bengals QB Sam Scarpitto had 147 yards in the air as well. Both clubs are now 1-1.

VIKINGS 22 SEAHAWKS 10
Wes Moore returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown and George Musgrave kicked three first half field goals, including a 51 yarder as the half came to an end, to lead Minnesota past Seattle 22-10. Both clubs are 1-1 after 2 preseason games. Neither team managed to generate much offense in the game.

RAMS 24 LIONS 20
Two fourth quarter touchdowns gave the St Louis Rams a 24-20 win over the Detroit Lions in preseason action. Rams QB Ron Dugans had an outstanding game, completing 11 of 15 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown. His Detroit counterpart, Bob *Waterfield, also looked good completing 8 of 14 for 86 yards. Lions running back Fred Johnson led all rushers with 74 yards on the ground. Rams FS Nathan Sehorn, in a battle to keep his starting job, provided the winning touchdown with a 45 yard interception return with 5 minutes remaining in the game.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
DALLAS LOSES ANOTHER MEMBER OF TITLE SQUAD
Point guard Freddie *Scolari is the lastest member of the World Champion Dallas Chaparrels to join another team. The former University of San Francisco star has signed a 3 year deal with the Pittsburgh Pipers. In 4 seasons with the Chaps, *Scolari averaged 8.7 pph and 5.3 apg. He started 63 regular season games last year and played in all 16 of Dallas' playoff contests. With Taro Devane already manning the point guard spot for the Pipers, *Scolari will likely split shooting guard duties with another newcomer, Ryan Fry.

Dallas did make a move to shore up the middle after centers John Layton and Hagen Ochoa chose to sign elsewhere. Dez Guglielmina returns to his home state after spending 13 seasons with the Knicks, Bombers and Cavs. A standout at the University of Texas, Guglielmina started just 7 games a year ago but should add leadership and will tutor first round pick Arnie *Risen, who as it stands now will be the starting center for the Chaps.

Minneapolis signed SF Taylor Bitzenhofer. The 10 year veteran has spent most of his career as a backup and that won't change this year as he will sit behind Joe *Fulks on the depth chart. The former first round pick from Boston College appeared in 47 games for New Orleans last season. He has also had stops in Buffalo and Cleveland during his career.

GOLF
FORMER BASEBALL STAR BYRD STILL HAS SHARE OF LEAD
Former New York Yankees outfielder Sammy Byrd continues to have a share of the lead at the Colonial Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. Byrd, who has played some winter events the past half dozen years, turned to golf full-time just a few weeks ago when the New York Yankees released him. In his 18 years with the Yankees the 39 year old batted .287 with 68 career homeruns. In 3 events on the tour this season Byrd has won $613. In real life Byrd won 23 professional tournaments after his baseball career.

Byrd is tied with George Fazio at 12 under par, 2 strokes ahead of Ben Hogan. Veteran Gene Sarazen is enjoying his best event of the year. He is tied with Sam Snead, 4 strokes off the pace heading into today's final round.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PHILLIES AND PIRATES BEGIN 4 GAME SET TODAY
The Philadelphia Phillies have never won the National League Pennant. In fact, they have not even been in a pennant race since they finished 1 game back of the Cubs in 1907. The Phillies did finish second in 1911 and 1917 but in both cases they were way behind the league winner. Since 1918 they have only finished as high as third once and have finished below .500 each of the last 8 seasons. Yet somehow the upstart Phillies find themselves in the thick of a National League Pennant race against the winningest team in baseball history - the defending champion Pittsburgh Pirates who boast 15 pennants and 6 World Series titles in their franchise history.

The next 4 days will go a long ways towards determining if this truly will be a miracle season for Philadelphia as the Phillies start a 4 game series with the Pirates at Forbes Field. After that the two clubs will have just 3 head to head contests left - in Philadelphia during the final week of the season.

The key to the Phillies success has been something that rarely is seen in this city - a dominant pitching staff. Charley Schanz (17-9, 3.52) has come out of nowhere to be a dominant starter. The 28 year old was 4-6 in his career heading into this season. The same can be said for 31 year old Max Macon (12-5, 2.85). Macon never started a major league game prior to this season and was 1-6 as a reliever. 24 year old Vic Lombardi (12-10, 3.33) is doing what was expected of his after a strong sophomore season a year ago and 33 year old veteran Hugh Mulcahy (13-11, 3.25) seems finally able to shake his nickname 'Losing Pitcher'. 39 year old Bill Swift, with a 268-215 career record, graciously moved to the bullpen early in the season and has added veteran leadership to the staff.

The Philadelphia offense is not overpowering but it is steady. Catcher Bennie Warren (.264,6,30), 1B Ray Sanders (.291,11,51), veteran 2B Joe Gordon (.218,18,52), 3B Jim Tabor (.251,4,19) and SS Mickey Witek (.286,3,27) man the infield while 22 year old Del Ennis (.272,8,53) and veterans Bobby Estalella (.289,5,52) and Buster Adams (.262,14,54) patrol the outfield.

In yesterday's action the Phillies dropped a half game back of Pittsburgh. Steve Gromek and the Boston Braves 6-hit the Phillies in a 6-2 Boston win while Pittsburgh scored 5 times in the bottom of the 8th to top New York 7-3. Arky Vaughan's bases loaded triple was the big blow of the inning. Ralph Kiner also hit a solo homer, his 12th.

The Cubs are just 3.5 games off the pace after Chicago scored 4 times in the top of the 13th to beat Cincinnati 9-5. Bill Nicholson and Eddie Waitkus each hit 2-run singles during the big inning. In the other National League game Walker Cooper's 3-run homer in the top of the 9th gave St Louis a 6-4 win over Brooklyn.

The St Louis Browns dropped their 5th straight game and are now 8 games behind Cleveland in the American League. Norm Schlueter's pinch-hit rbi single in the top of the 12th gave Chicago a 12-11 win over the Browns. Meanwhile the Indians scored 5 times in the bottom of the 9th and once in the 10th to beat New York 7-6. Lou Boudreau's 7th homer of the season ended the game.

In other American League action Detroit beat Boston 6-4 thanks to an 8th inning homerun from Tommy Henrich. Ken Heintzelman got the win to improve to 12-9 while Andy Karl fell to 16-7. There were late inning heroics in Washington as Cecil Travis delivered an rbi single with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth giving the Senators a 5-4 win over Philadelphia.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS
Detroit outfielder Tommy Henrich and Pittsburgh 3B Bob Elliott have been named the major league players of the week. Henrich had 12 hits in 24 at bats and drove in 7 runs while Elliott also hit .500 with 7 rbi's.

BOXING
MARCIANO WINS PRO DEBUT
Promising young heavyweight boxer Rocky Marciano won his professional debut, scoring a first round TKO over Sonny Nichols in New Haven. The Brockton, Mass. native was all over his opponent and Nichols barely landed a punch. By the time the first round was 2 minutes old Nichols was 'out on his feet' and the referee wisely stopped the fight. Nichols, from Portland, Maine, sees his record drop to 0-4.

GOLF
HOGAN RALLIES TO WIN COLONIAL
When Ben Hogan is in contention on the final day of a tournament it is almost a given that the engraver can begin to work on the trophy. Yesterday was no different as Hogan overcame a 2 stroke deficeit entering the round and easily won his 6th tournament of the year. Hogan carded a 5 under par 65 to overtake Saturday's co-leaders: Sammy Byrd and George Fazio. Byrd, the former professional ballplayer, wilted under the pressure and finished with a 1 over 71 while Fazio shot a 69 to claim second place, two strokes back of Hogan.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON WEEK TWO
DOLPHINS OFFENSE EXPLODES AGAINST SAN DIEGO
QB Woody Brooks threw for 187 yards and one touchdown to lead the Miami Dolphins to their second straight preseason victory, 38-14 over San Diego. In all the three Miami QB's in the game passed for 3 touchdowns and 309 yards. Starting WR Keyou Kinard was the biggest beneficiary of the qb success, catching 5 balls for 105 yards. The Dolphins also beat up San Diego on the ground as they ran for 184 yards including 82 from backup RB Mel Rogers. One of the few bright spots for the Chargers was the play of rookie QB Les *Horvath, who completed 8 of 13 passes for 82 yards.

BUCS 13 CARDINALS 6
Paul *Christman and John Zeno connected on the games only touchdown, a 20 yard pass just before half-time, as Tampa improved to 2-0 with a 13-6 win over Arizona. Cardinals allstar DB Booker Hasselbeck looked in midseason form, leading the team with 7 tackles and adding a sack and a forced fumble. Otto *Graham completed 5 of 10 pass attempts for 62 yards for the Bucs.

FALCONS 31 PACKERS 21
Atlanta tight end Aaron Carmichael had 2 touchdown catches including an 85 yarder to lead the Falcons to their second preseason win, topping Green Bay 31-21. Antowain Anderson had 92 yards rushing for the Falcons. Both QB's battling for the starting job in Green Bay looked sharp. Jordan Montana completed 13 of 15 passes for 122 yards while Stanford rookie Frank *Albert completed 8 of 10 for 100 yards. Each QB threw a touchdown pass to star receiver Don *Hutson.

49ERS 22 GIANTS 18
Third string QB Ike Meier's second touchdown pass of the game, a 31 yard strike to Art Adamson with less than 2 minutes to play, gave the San Francisco 49ers their second preseason win. Despite suffering their second straight loss the Giants can be happy with the play of Harry *Gilmer. The second round pick from Alabama appears to have the inside track on the starting QB job after passing for 152 yards and one touchdown. Veteran starting linebacker Mel Heim also had a big day for the Giants, notching 2 sacks and 6 tackles.

RAVENS 35 BEARS 28
Despite the positive final score the Baltimore Ravens had little to be happy about in their win over Chicago. With the first team in the game the Bears built a 21-0 lead before the scrubs took over and the Ravens pulled out a second half comeback. Frankie Morrall led the Bears defense with a pair of interceptions as Baltimore QB John Foster had a rough day. For the Bears George *McAfee ran for a pair of touchdowns and Sid *Luckman threw for 137 yards. In the second half it was backup Baltimore QB Shelton Wiley who got the Ravens moving, leading them to 4 touchdowns.

BROWNS 36 COWBOYS 28
The Browns offense had a far better showing than last week when Detroit held them to just 3 first downs. WR Zach Kruczek had 4 catches for 111 yards and 1 touchdown to lead Cleveland past Dallas 36-28. However, it was the defense that pulled out the win for Cleveland. Tommy Risien and LeRoy Strom each returned a 4th quarter interception for Cleveland touchdowns. In all Dallas backup QB Bart Thompson was picked off 4 times, spoiling a strong effort from starting signal-caller Doug Schroeder, who completed 15 out of 20 passes for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns. First overall draft pick George *Savitsky had another tough game. The DE from Pennsylvania managed just 1 tackle and constantly being double-teamed put little pressure on the Browns QB's.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
NEW ORLEANS SIGNS BRUISING CENTER SANDERS
7'0" center Bam Sanders has agreed to a 1 year deal with the New Orleans Jazz. Sanders, who had 10.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg will be a tremendous tutor for rookie Jack *Rocker and may go a long way towards helping the Jazz back to respectability. After winning back to back league titles in 1945 and 1946 the Jazz dropped to the bottom of the Midwest Division a year ago and missed the playoffs entirely. However, Sanders joins a solid core of veterans including guards Ethan Miller and Daniel Gray along with PF Taliek Barraza. If the Jazz can find themselves a decent small forward they could be the most improved team in the league this season.

Sanders has played for Boston, Cleveland, Kentucky and Philadelphia in his 11 year pro career. He played his college ball at Oklahoma A&M and was the Big 8 player of the year as a junior. He made the all-conference team his senior season despite missing nearly two months with an injury. He played sparingly but was a member of the Cowboys only NCAA title team during his sophomore season.

The Indianapolis Olympians signed PG Kenneth Yumas to a 3 year deal. The 8th year pro from Seton Hall split last season between Pittsburgh and Kentucky. He spent his first six season in Minneapolis. Last year he averaged 2.3 ppg as he was used quite sparringly. However, with the Olympians he will have a chance to start, something he has not done since 1944, his final season in Minneapolis. With Ahmed Williams gone to Minneapolis the Olympians look to have just Yumas or veteran Draper Lytell to play point guard. Lytell is a 7 time MVP but his best days are well behind him so barring a late move Yumas will be the man in Indy.

Syracuse signed ex-Minneapolis backup SF Robert Stennis. The 12th year pro returns to the city where he played his college ball to wind up his BAA career. The ex-Orangeman spent 8 seasons with the Lakers after 4 seasons with the Kentucky Colonels. He averaged 7.2 ppg a year ago.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PIRATES TOP PHILLIES 6-1
Cliff Melton tossed a complete game 7-hitter while Phillies starter Hugh Mulcahy struggled with his control all game. The result was a 6-1 Pittsburgh victory allowing the Pirates to draw first blood in their 4 game homestand against the second place Phillies. Pittsburgh took a quick lead in the second inning when Bob Elliott led off with a triple and scored on a Tony Cuccinello ground out. The Phillies evened things in the fourth on an rbi single from catcher Bennie Warren but walks cost Philadelphia a run in each of the next 3 innings. In all, Phillies starter Hugh Mulcahy walked 11 Pittsburgh batters, a career worst for him. The win moves the Pirates a game and a half ahead of Philadelphia. The pitching matchup today definately favours the Phils as 12 game winner Max Macon takes the hill against Pittsburgh rookie Vic Raschi (5-11).

The Chicago Cubs are staying in the National League race thanks to their second straight 13 inning victory. This time Brooklyn was the victim as Eddie Waitkus hit a 2-run triple in the top of the 13th to give the Cubs a 6-4 win.

In other action Frankie Hayes hit a pair of homers and Johnny Mize delivered a game winning rbi single in the bottom of the 10th as Cincinnati beat St Louis 6-5 while Boston topped New York by the same 6-5 score.

St Louis and Boston both won in American League play but neither managed to gain any ground on front-running Cleveland as the Indians also emerged victorious. Oscar Grimes hit a 3-run homer and Warren Spahn won his 14th game of the season as the Tribe beat New York 9-7. Mel Almada had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs as Boston crushed Detroit 10-3 while in St Louis Vern Stephens homered and drove in 5 runs as the Browns outslugged Chicago 12-8. The other game had Philadelphia beat Washington 3-2 in 10 innings.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON WEEK TWO
JAGS TRIM SAINTS IN PRESEASON PLAY
Keith Musso and Reggie Chancey each ran for a touchdown to lead the Jacksonville Jaguars past the New Orleans 24-23 in week two preseason action. New Orleans led 13-10 at the half as Saints allstar RB Todd Berger gained 141 yards on 11 carries. QB Ryan Boyette also had a good half for New Orleans, completing 11 of 19 for 94 yards including a 40 yard touchdown pass to Bob Sommer. New Orleans increased it's lead to 23-10 in the third quarter before the Jags got a 3 yard run for a score from Musso and a 15 yard Bennie Burrow to Bobby Wright TD pass late in the fourth quarter.
The win improves the Jags to 2-0 while New Orleans is 1-1.

BOXING
PLENTY OF FUTURE STARS ENTERING RANKS
With Rocky Marciano having just made his pro debut I thought it would be interesting to profile a few of the up and coming boxers that should make some noise in the next few years. Here are the top 10 fighters with less than 5 professional bouts:

1- Rocky Marciano - The 24 year old from Brockton, Mass. appears to be well on his way to a shot at the heavyweight title. That title shot might be a couple of years down the road but Marciano plans on being very busy over the coming months. Presently he is 1-0 after a first round TKO over Sonny Nichols.

2- Duilio Loi - Just 18, the Italian lightweight is set to turn pro late this year. In real life he was often overlooked because he fought exclusively in Europe but his career record was 115-3-8. A tremendous defensive fighter, Loi did not possess knockout ability but was an Italian, European and World Champion.

3- Carmen Basilio - The 20 year old former Marine is an onion farmer from Canastota, New York. However, if all goes according to form the welterweight will contend for a World Championship. In real life he was one of the most popular fighters of his era due to a tough, gritty style. Basilio was 56-16-7 in his career. He will make his pro debut in my universe later this year.

4- Holly Mims - 19 year old is set to make his pro debut next year. The Washington DC native has a chance to be a factor in the middleweight division. In real life he was 62-27-6.

5- Joey Giradello - 19 year old from Philadelphia was a world middleweight champion in his real life career. He was 101-25-7. Described as a very clever boxer with not much of a knockout punch.

6- Lester Felton - The Detroit native is another 19 year old ready to turn pro in the middleweight division. Began his real life career 28-0 but never had a title shot. Finished with a 59-17-3 career record.

7- Gustav Scholz - 18 year old German light-heavyweight will turn pro later this year. In real life he was 86-2-6 with one of his losses coming in a World title shot against Harold Johnson.

8- Roland LaStarza - 20 year old from New York City may one day challenge Rocky Marciano for the heavyweight title of the world. In real life LaStarza won his first 37 fights before losing to Marciano. A second loss to Marciano, for the World title in 1953 was called the fight of the year. Was 57-9 for his career. LaStarza will make his TSN debut this week.

9- Phil Kim - 20 year old lightweight from Honolulu will also make his pro debut this week. He was 43-15-3 for his career in real life.

10- Jeffrey xSmith - 20 year old boardmember created fighter from LeClaire, Iowa is off to a 2-0 start in the heavyweight division. His next fight will be a big challenge when he takes on Turkey Thompson tonight.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
STEAMROLLERS ADD 3 PLAYERS
With just a few days remaining in the free agent signing period the Providence Steamrollers decided to make some noise. With all 5 of their starters from last season still under contract Providence added some depth by signing 3 key reserves. Veteran PG Ben Gosford had 7.8 ppg and 5.5 apg as the 6th man in Minneapolis a year ago. The 13th year pro from Indiana should see plenty of action spelling guards Kaanan Gochneaur and Jim *Pollard. Add in to the mix first round draft pick George *Feigenbaum and the Steamrollers are stacked in the backcourt.

Forwards Chuck *Halbert and Lourdes Aguero also were signed by Providence yesterday. *Halbert, a former second round pick from San Francisco, has developed nicely in his 3 seasons in the league. He had 8.2 ppg and 4.6 rpg for Pittsburgh last year. Aguero is entering his 9th season but has been bothered by injuries much of his career. With Indianapolis a year ago he played just 53 games and averaged 8.3 ppg. If he could ever stay healthy he could compete for a starting job at the small forward position.

In other signing news one of the league's most popular players, Cameron Belli, has signed with Milwaukee after 14 seasons in New Orleans. The former first overall pick from the University of Florida averaged a career worst 8.9 ppg a year ago. Belli is 6th in career points in league history and third all-time in steals. Eight times he was named the league's defensive player of the year and he was a member of 4 league championship teams with New Orleans. Belli was the first pick in the first college draft in league history.

Kentucky added PG Matt Butts, who played just 30 games for Syracuse last season. The 9th year pro from the University of Texas won't see a lot of action as he will be backing up one of the league's best young players in Colonels star Trevor Presgraves, who was a first team allstar last year, his third season in the league.

The St Louis Bombers now have 6 centers under contract after inking former Fort Wayne starter Bryan Courson. Courson averaged 8.8 ppg and 6.6 rpg last year, his first as a starter with the Pistons after 4 seasons as a backup in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia inked ex Boston guard Demarrio Johnson to a 2 year deal. Johnson averaged 7.8 ppg last season as he split the year between Dallas and Boston. Finally, the New York Knickerbockers have signed Caston Cook, who was a backup in Cleveland last year.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CUBS EXTRA-EFFORT IS MAKING NL A 3 TEAM RACE
With their third straight extra-inning victory the Chicago Cubs have moved to within 2.5 games of the National League lead. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth Phil Rizzuto delivered a one-out rbi triple to tie the game and then Rizzuto clobbered a solo homerun in the 15th to give the Cubs a 5-4 win in Brooklyn. Eddie Waitkus also homered for the Cubs who won each of their previous two games in the 13th inning. Cubs ace Vern Olsen was not around for the decision so he did not get his 19th win of the season but Olsen did pitch 9 strong innings. Jackie Robinson led the Dodgers with 3 hits and a pair of rbi's.

The Philadelphia Phillies evened their 4-game series in Pittsburgh at 1 win apiece after a 4-2 victory yesterday. Buster Adams hit a 2-run homer to key a 3 run opening inning outburst and Phillies starter Max Macon (13-5, 2.66) made the lead stand up. Pirates starter Vic Raschi settled down after the first inning but still saw his record drop to 5-12. The win moves the Phillies to within a half game of front running Pittsburgh.

In other National League action Grady Hatton and Johnny Mize each had 3 hits as Cincinnati trimmed St Louis 5-4. Arnold Carter won his 14th game of the season for the Reds. In Boston, Ross Bauers (10-13, 3.62) had his best game of the season, 5-hitting the Braves in a 5-2 New York Giants win.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The Cleveland Indians continue to roll right along. The Tribe have won 9 of their last 11 games after a 5-1 win over visiting New York yesterday. Backup catcher Mike Tresh homered in a 4-run second inning to help Ray Poat improve his record to 9-10. Poat and 2 relievers combined to hold the Yankees to just 4 hits in the game.

Milt Byrnes hit a walk-off grand slam with one out in the 10th inning to give the St Louis Browns a 9-5 win over Philadelphia. In the only other American League game Morrie Anderholt hit 2 homers including a grand slam as Washington dumped Chicago 12-8. Jimmy Haynes got the win to improve to 14-9 as he bids for his third straight 20 win season.

GOLF
US OPEN BEGINS TOMORROW IN ST LOUIS
Harry Bradshaw is set to begin defense of his US Open Golf Championship. The Irishman won last year's event in Cleveland. The fourth and final major of the year will tee off tomorrow at the St Louis Golf and Country Club in Clayton, Missouri. Ben Hogan, who has dominated the tour this year winning 6 events including the Masters and PGA championship, is once again the favourite to win at St Louis.

It was also announced this week that the Riveria Country Club in Los Angeles will host next year's tournament while in 1948 it will be held for the first time in Medinah, Illinois.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
STAGS REACQUIRE MACEINA
The Chicago Stags signed free agent SG Narunas Maceina to a 2 year deal bringing the former Baylor star back to the team he began his pro career with. Maceina was taken 10th overall by the Stags in 1941 and spent 4 years in a Chicago uniform before playing in Philadelphia the past two seasons. His best year was 1944-45 when he started 64 games for the Stags and averaged 11.6 ppg. The last two seasons in Philadelphia he averaged less than 12 minutes a game coming off the bench. Maciena will not get a chance to start in Chicago as he will be backing up AJ Lambert, who averaged nearly 18 points a game last season.

No major signings announced yesterday as the free agent period winds down. There are just 3 days left so a couple of teams made some depth moves. Kentucky inked ex Kansas City center Jason Tello and former Pittsburgh PG Yohan Hyland to 1 year deals. Syracuse signed 11 year veteran SF Robert Aylworth to a 1 year deal. Aylworth averaged 3.4 ppg for Milwaukee last season. Finally Minneapolis resigned Art Morris to a 1 year deal. The 13 year pro averaged just 4 minutes a game for the Lakers last season. He has also played for Dallas, Syracuse and Washington in his career.

BOXING
UP AND COMING HEAVYWEIGHT xSMITH WINS AGAIN
After struggling in the early rounds 20 year old heavyweight Jeffrey xSmith finished with a flurry in his bout with veteran Turkey Thompson. Thompson seemed to clearly win the first 4 rounds of the 8 round bout before Smith caught him with a punishing shot to the ribs early in the 5th. Thompson dropped to the canvas after that blow and while he did get back up he was no match for the youngster from that point on as xSmith won a close but unanimous decision.

xSmith, a native of LeClaire, Iowa, improves to 3-0 and is considered one of the new breed of heavyweight contenders along with Rocky Marciano, Roland LaStarza and Bob Baker. Next up for xSmith will be a September matchup against Detroit native Marty Marshall. 22 years old and nicknamed the Michigan Bomber, Marshall won his pro debut last week over Dayton's Johnny Clemons.

Thompson's record falls to 13-11 but he has faced some very tough competition along the way. The 28 year old can count Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore among his losses and he took both of those men to a decision.

One other heavyweight bout last night saw JT 'The New York Assassin' xCampbell win by TKO over fellow New Yorker Carmine Vingo. The 18 year old xCampbell is now 2-0-1 and is also working his way up the division.

It's not just the Pirates you have to worry about. Watch out for the Cubs.

As for xCampbell, there is some real tough young competition in the New York area right now. He will be seriously tested in the coming months - perhaps even against Marciano. The one advantage xSmith has is that he will face mainly young fighters from the midwest in the early going, and the talent level is no where near that of the East coast in the heavyweight division right now.

Btw, for anyone interested college football preseason top 20 is released in the next issue. Favourites for preseason #1 are Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas.
