Coburn Gets Off Canvas And Retains Title

February 10, 1907

Joe Coburn (16-7-4) recovered from a slow start to score a KO11 over #5 George Godfrey (16-10-1).

Coburn started slow and paid the price getting dropped in the 3rd round. However, that seemed to wake him up as he dominated the rest of the way. Not only knocking out Godfrey but battering him first.

Coburn won every round after the 3rd. He cut Godfrey's lip in the 7th. Cut his left eye all to hell in the 10th. Cut over and under the eye. Then knocked Godfrey down twice and out in the 11th.

On the undercard

HW - Peter Maher (12-11-1) TKO7 George Byers (8-1-1) (Byers stepped up to HW for this fight and fought at the weight disadvantage. Despite the loss he debuts ranked at #3 in the LHW division)
WW - Whitney Lewis (10-11) UD10 Charles McKeever (2-4)
BW - Dave Sullivan (2-0) UD10 Billy Rotchford (7-5)
FW - Tommy Sullivan (8-9-2) KO4 Black Griffo (2-5-1)
HW - Tommy Burns (14-4-1) UD10 Tom Lees (13-12)

Joe Lannon

One of the nice stories in my universe.

One of my original fighters in 1900. Lannon started out okay at 6-4. He then lost his next 7 fights to drop to 6-11 and fall into the club ranks.

His first year in the club ranks he went 2-2 and dropped to 8-13 and go to post-prime. In my universe I have a rule that once they go post-prime if they win 5 straight and qualify under other rules (mainly be at least .500 and have more than 30 retired points) then they can go back to prime until they lose again, once they go back to post-prime they stay there.

After dropping to 8-13 Lannon won his next 5 fights to even his record and go back to the main division. His retired points were up to 31.5 so he got to go back to prime. His first fight at prime he won by KO so he is now 14-13 and still prime.

May not last long but I thought it was a good story.

One rule change in my universe. I decided instead of mandatory post-prime after a certain # of fights, it'll be mandatory at the end of their 10th year. Now with wins and the one shot at going back to prime, fighters can stick around pretty long afterwards but it gives me a hard fast rule to follow.

I'm following with interest. I'm running the history of my new universe up to 1883, where it will actually start, so I'm trying to decide what aging and activity rules I'm going to use. How are your fighters in general doing once they move to postprime? My current thought is that postprime penalizes a fighter to the extent that it's simply a prelude to retirement, but Lannon's example gives me pause.

What I've notice (not tested at all) is that they tend to lose to fighters rated 1 below them but not two below. Lannon who had the nice win streak did it all in club ranks. He is rated a 4 and he beat a 1, three 2's and a 3. For the most part my post-prime guys aren't fighting any worse than they did before. It'll be interesting to see how the good guys do once they hit mandatory post-prime.

Of course most of my post-prime guys are in club where they are facing lesser competition or beginners which evens things out a little.

Meyer Wins Rubber Match

February 25th, 1907

Billy Meyer (21-3-3) won via KO12 over #2 George Lavigne (18-8-1) in their 3rd match to retain the LBC lightweight title.

Meyer completely dominated the fight from the opening bell. Through 11 rounds I had only given one round to Lavigne.

Meyer knocked Lavigne down in the 4th. Caused Lavigne's right eye to swell in the 4th, then knocked him down for good in the 12th.

On the undercard

BW - Jimmy Walsh (4-5-3) TKO2 Joe Wagner (9-6) (walsh off to a pathetic start of his career)
HW - Larry Foley (16-5-2) UD10 Paddy Ryan (7-5-2)
HW- Ed Dunkhorst (16-12-2) TKO8 Jack Burns (10-2)
BW - Dennis McFadden (6-7-1) UD10 Tommy Feltz (10-12)
LHW - John Donaldson (8-5) UD10 Arthur Cripps (7-3)

Currently 79, with only 25 in the main division. Of the 54 in the club division 33 have been added in the last two years, so there are alot of beginners and pre-prime fighters.

There are 34 fighters ranked so that means 45 still haven't fought 10 fights.

March 1907

Good title month with 5 title fights on tap. Several titles could change hands

HW - (LBF) John L. Sullivan (23-5) vs. #2 Charley Mitchell (20-6)
LHW - (LBC) Jack Root (22-6-1) vs. #2 Jack O'Brien (16-2-1) (Rematch of their November fight which was stopped due to a controversial cut)
MW - (LBA) Stanley Ketchel (16-2) vs. #2 Bob Fitzsimmons (22-2) (Fitz scored a TKO4 in their first bout)
WW - (LBA) #7 Charley Hitte (8-5) vs #2 Kyle Whitney (9-0-1) (vacant title from Tommy Ryan moving up to MW)
BW - (LBA) George Dixon (19-5) vs. #3 Terry McGovern (21-5-2) (4th fight between the two McGovern up 2-1)

I see Sullivan retaining title. O'Brien, Fitz, and McGovern taking titles and Whitney winning the vacant title.

Hitte Takes Crown Late From Whitney

March 3rd, 1907

Charley Hitte (9-5) scored a UD15 over Kyle Whitney (9-1-1) to win the vacant LBA Welterweight Title, vacated by Tommy Ryan's decision to move to middleweight.

Whitney seemed in control early in the fight despite a bad second round that saw a cut under his left eye. Whitney also dropped his hands after the second, evidently feeling that Hitte couldn't hurt him.

Round 6-10 were close with Whitney's left eye starting to swell in the 8th and Hitte's in the 9th.

Hitte then took control of the fight winning 4 of the last 5 rounds as Whitney was too tired.

I had it 144-143 Hitte as did ringside expert Aurelio Barrios. The official judges scored it 143-142/144-143/144-142.

On the undercard
FW - Jem Driscoll (25-5) UD10 Will Curley (8-2) (Despite the blowout loss Curley debuts on the LBA rankings at #3)
HW - Ed Dunkhorst (17-12-2) TKO10 Steve Reynolds (7-2-2)
LW - George McFadden (9-2-1) UD10 Mike Daly (11-14-2)
FW - Jerry Barnett (1-0) SD10 Jack Downey (1-1)
FW - Lew Ryall (1-0) SD10 Young Byrnes (1-1)

Johnson set the tone of the fight quickly, dropping Mitchell in the first. He bloodied Mitchell's nose in the 4th and dropped him again in the 6th. Mitchell started carrying his hands low in the 8th and his right eye started to swell due to a cut in the 9th. Johnson put it on cruise control from there and coasted to an easy victory.

Sullivan Destroys Mitchell For First Title Defense

March 8th, 1907

John L. Sullivan (24-5) jumped all over #2 Charley Mitchell (20-7) from the opening bell to win a 7th round TKO and retain the LBF Heavyweight Title.

Sullivan's opening charge caused Mitchell's right eye to swell after just one round. In the 2nd, Sullivan dropped Mitchell and then pounded away for the rest of the round which caused Mitchell's left eye to swell.

Virtually a blind fighter at that point he got hit with every punch Sullivan threw from there on. Finally he got knocked down again in the 7th and with his right eye completely closed the ref had enough and stopped the beating.

On the undercard

HW- Jake Kilrain (13-10-4) SD10 Jimmy Elliot (19-4-2)
HW - Joe Jeannette (10-0) UD10 Nick Burley (11-5) (Jeannette makes his debut at #5 on the LBA charts)
FW - Brooklyn Tommy Sullivan (9-9-2) UD10 Billy Snailham (0-2)
HW - Tommy Burns (15-4-1) MD10 Marvin Hart (11-11-3)
LHW - Jack Graham (7-2) KO5 Al Weinig (7-7)

O' Brien Gets His Revenge And Title

March 13, 1907

#2 Philadelphia Jack O'Brien (17-2-1) cruised to an UD15 over champion Jack Root (22-7-1) in the rematch of their October fight that seemed to be stopped prematurely in Root's favor.

O'Brien stayed to the outside and out boxed Root. There were no knockdowns and only Root suffered a cut. It was a cut under Root's left eye in the 9th.

Pretty boring and non-eventful fight.

I had it 146-139. Aurelio Barrios, the ringside expert, had it 145-141. The official judges had it 146-140/146-139/146-139.

On the undercard
MW - Tommy Ryan (27-0) UD10 Charles Goff (10-3-2) (Ryan's middleweight debut)
LW - Harry Gilmore (19-10) UD10 Sam Bolen (4-9-1) (Bolen drops to the club ranks)
BW - Al Delmont (11-6-1) UD10 Charley Kelly (3-5-1)
MW - Frank Klaus (9-2-1) TKO6 Jack Moffat (7-5)
HW - William Schiller (10-2) UD10 Mike Brennan (11-14)

Just had the greatest fight I have ever had in this game ... unfortunately I have to leave you hanging. 24 is on in 10 minutes then I gotta hit the sack, just to get up in 4 hours for work.

I'll write it up before I go to work in at about 2:30 a.m. EST.

I'll give a hint though

Ketchel vs. Fitzsimmons ... On my final scorecard there were 21 points lost in a 15 round fight.

Ketchel Outlasts Fitzsimmons In Lba's Greatest Fight To Date

March 18th, 1907

Stanley Ketchel (17-2) scored a MD15 over #2 Bob Fitzsimmons (22-3) to retain his LBA Middleweight title.

Ketchel, who was knocked down 3 times and beaten up badly in a TKO4 loss to Fitz in July of 1905, looked ready to head down that same pathlast night when Fitz dropped him in the first round.

Instead Ketchel held on, got out of the first and got his feet back under him. He went on to outbox Fitz in the 2nd, and 3rd, then did some damage of his own in the forth. Fitz went down from a sharp uppercut. Fitz managed to survive the last 1:17 of the round despite Ketchel jumping all over him. Fitz's right eye started to swell.

The two fighters split the 5th and 6th. Seventeen seconds into round 7, Fitz caught Ketchel again dropping him for an 8 count. Ketchel got up very shakily and it didn't look good. Fitz jumped him and Ketchel did his best to hold on. At 1:51 of the round Fitz landed a brutal hook to the body and dropped Ketchel again.

Ketchel got up at 9, it appeared for a moment that the fight was over. Referee Fred Steinwinder asked Ketchel if he was alright and Ketchel said "It's Friday!". Steinwinder let the fight continue because it was Friday, but the crowd sensed one big shot would end it. That shot never came and Ketchel got out of the round. At this point, I had it 65-64 Fitz. Ketchel left eye began to swell.

Ketchel got his feet back under him and won the 8th, but the ref took a point away from him for a vicious low blow. Fitz won the 9th and 10th. So after 10 I had it 94-91 Fitz. It looked like Fitz was in control of the fight.

They split round 11 and 12. Ketchel's corner started in after 12 telling their boy he needed a KO to win. Ketchel came out strong in the 13th, and caught Fitz with a wicked combo at the 2:15 mark that caused Fitz to stumble back and put his right glove on the canvas. Steinwinder ruled it a knockdown despite the protests of Fitz. Review showed it was a punch that caused him to stumble backwards. This ruling put Ketchel back in the fight, after 13 I had it 121-120 Fitz.

Ketchel won the 14th, putting the balance of the fight on the 15th. Both fighters were exhausted and did alot of clinching in the 15th but a late flurry by Ketchel gave him the round.

I scored it 140-139 Ketchel. Ringside expert Walt Arnold scored it 141-140 Ketchel. The official judges had it 140-139/140-139/140-140. The fight featured 5 KD's and a point taken away for a foul. Ketchel landed 366 shots at 38.1%. Fitzsimmons landed 282 at 35.8%.

On the undercard
WW - Honey Mellody (11-10) MD10 Jem Carney (15-11) (Carney stepped up to WW in a weight adjusted fight)
HW - Joe Goss (11-2-1) UD10 Hank Griffin (11-3-2)
FW - Young Corbett (13-10-4) DRAW10 Benny Soloman (1-0-1)
HW - Jem Mace (10-5-2) DRAW10 Charles Hadley (14-10-3)
LHW - Al Kauffman (4-7) UD10 Mike McCoole (8-9-2)

Sounds like it was a great fight, mh. I'm looking forward to when I get to the stage with my universe when I'm running 12 and 15 round fights.

Keep up the great work.

Easily best fight I've ever had ... I almost came out of my seat when ketchel put him down in the 13th. Not th at I was rooting for either, it just seemed like that was the perfect way to end the fight.
