I mistakenly left some very important stuff out of the preseason report. Here's what I added:

Quote:
In the AL, Cleveland looks primed for another pennant. Their pitching staff is one of the best in the game, and their offense is still dangerous. Several teams, however, have crept closer to the Indians' level of talent. Teams such as Boston and Chicago will be top competitors. Detroit and Philadelphia may surprise a lot of people and be right in the pennant hunt. Meanwhile, St. Louis and Washington are rebuilding very talented teams and could be surprising this season.

The three-time defending NL champion Cardinals may not be the early favorites this year. The injuries suffered to their pitching staff late last season may have lingering effects in 1917. Plus, the competition in the NL should be fierce this season. Teams like Cincinnati, New York and Philadelphia are ready to be kings of the National League mountain. Brooklyn and Pittsburgh are talented enough to also be in the mix, while the Cubs are rebuilding a formidable pitching staff.

Key Retirees:

Bowie Castellon, SP, Chicago Cubs 1905-1916, Boston Braves 1916: Bowie was an outstanding pitcher and he was a big reason why the Cubs did not have a losing season for 14 years. He put together 9 20-win seasons and in his other three seasons he won 19, 19 and 18. He finished his career with a 262-146 record (4th Most Wins All Time), 2.52 ERA (7th Best All Time), 1298 strikeouts, 397 complete games (7th Most All-Time) and 50 shutouts (8th Most All-Time). He won three POTY Awards and was part of the Cubs' only World Series championship team in 1905. He retired at the top of his game at age 37 just months after being traded to the Braves. "I am a Cub and I will always be a Cub," Castellon said. "If I can't play in Chicago and the Cubs organization no longer wants me, it's time to call it a career."

Cleveland jumped out to a big lead before slumping late in the month. The White Sox and Tigers have played very well and are tied for the early AL lead. The Sox have won despite losing one of their top pitchers, Dex Wolfe, until late May with shoulder problems.

New York amazingly began the season by winning 16 of their first 18 games. Cincinnati countered with a 7-game mid-month winning streak to pull to within 3 games. St. Louis currently stands at .500, while Brooklyn is just a half-game out of the cellar after already losing their #2 and #3 starters until June.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Eric Bates, 1B, Cleveland Indians - He hit .341 with 21 RBI, 15 runs scored and 3 home runs.

NL - John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .318 with 24 RBI, 15 runs scored and 4 home runs!

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Rich Leighton, Detroit Tigers - He was 5-0 with a 1.02 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - Allen Albertini, Brooklyn Robins - He was 4-1 with a 1.09 ERA including 1 shutout.

Code:
American League Standings

Chicago (A) 15 7 .682 -
Detroit 15 7 .682 -
Boston (A) 14 8 .636 1.0
Cleveland 13 10 .565 2.5
New York (A) 10 12 .455 5.0
Washington 10 13 .435 5.5
Philadelphia (A) 7 15 .318 8.0
St. Louis (A) 5 17 .227 10.0

National League Standings

New York (N) 17 5 .773 -
Cincinnati 14 8 .636 3.0
Chicago (N) 12 11 .522 5.5
St. Louis (N) 11 11 .500 6.0
Philadelphia (N) 9 13 .409 8.0
Pittsburgh 9 13 .409 8.0
Brooklyn 9 14 .391 8.5
Boston (N) 8 14 .364 9.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .273 with 7 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .256 with 11 RBI and 8 runs scored.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy is still the team's spot starter and long reliever.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .313 with 15 RBI, 14 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .316 with 9 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert ruptured a tendon in his arm on April 28th. He should be out until mid-June. Before his injury, he went 2-3 with a 4.22 in 6 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops was the April BOTM in the NL (see above). He was also named the POTW on April 26th. His 4 home runs in April are already half of his career high of 8. At age 24, he is becoming a true longball threat.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .433 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .288 with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 1-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 6 starts.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will hit .435 with 10 RBI, 8 runs scored and 9 stolen bases. He currently leads the AL batting race.

Thomas Strasser, 1B, Cleveland - Thomas hit .242 with 8 RBI and 11 runs scored. He struggled somewhat on the base paths, stealing 4 bases and being caught 4 times.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge was finally named the primary backup catcher. In April, he hit .375 (6 for 16) with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Those 3 RBI are already a career high.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel suffered horribly in April, going 1-3 with a 9.98 ERA in 5 starts. In two of his starts this month he allowed 12 runs, and he allowed 7 in another.

Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry struggled in his first month as a pro, hitting just .156 (7 for 45). That prompted management to ship him to AAA for fine tuning.

Donald "Duckie" Andrew, 2B, Cincinnati - Duckie played all of April in AAA.

I went back & checked, and yes he was... He strained a thigh muscle and was out from April 7th-21st... so he only played in 8 games this month...

The Red Sox went 16-12 and were tied for first for a while, but it was the Chicago White Sox who ruled this month in the AL. Altogether, the Pale Hose went 19-9 to pull 4 games ahead of Boston with the best record in the big leagues. Cleveland went 17-12, but remains 5 games back. Detroit lost last month's AL Pitcher of the Month, Rich Leighton, for the season with a torn ligament in his elbow. That prompted them to promote 23-year-old "Buckshot" Beck to the starting rotation. Beck was just signed this year and he looks like he has a great future.

The Giants maintained their lead in the NL despite going just 13-16 on the month. Luckily for them, the Reds also struggled at 12-16. The Cubs are now in 2nd Place after a 16-11 month.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Michael Wrightson, 1B, Boston Red Sox - He hit .376 with 34 RBI, 19 runs scored and 5 home runs! That was one of the best months for a batter in league history! After just 2 months, he has 8 home runs - half of the major league record. The AL record is just 12.

NL - "Butterball" Klehammer, C, Cincinnati Reds - He hit .400 with 19 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-2 with a 1.16 ERA and 2 shutouts!

NL - Kennith Coupe, Boston Braves - He was 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA including 1 shutout.

Code:
American League Standings

Chicago (A) 34 16 .680 -
Boston (A) 30 20 .600 4.0
Cleveland 30 22 .577 5.0
Detroit 26 24 .520 8.0
New York (A) 22 28 .440 12.0
Washington 22 29 .431 12.5
St. Louis (A) 20 30 .400 14.0
Philadelphia (A) 17 32 .347 16.5

National League Standings

New York (N) 30 21 .588 -
Chicago (N) 28 22 .560 1.5
St. Louis (N) 27 22 .551 2.0
Cincinnati 26 24 .520 3.5
Brooklyn 24 26 .480 5.5
Philadelphia (N) 22 27 .449 7.0
Pittsburgh 22 28 .440 7.5
Boston (N) 20 29 .408 9.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .322 with 6 RBI, 15 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .215 with 14 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - The Senators lost starter Curtis Bourgeault for the season with a torn tricep muscle, allowing Netsky to return to the rotation. In May, he went 0-4 with a 9.11 ERA over 5 games (4 starts).

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .297 with 16 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .293 with 8 RBI and 4 runs scored.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops came back to Earth after his great April. In May, he hit .255 with 8 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .377 with 13 RBI and 19 runs scored. On the base paths, he stole 6 bases and was thrown out 6 times.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .418 with 11 RBI, 25 runs scored and 15 stolen bases! He also hit for the cycle on May 22nd against the Senators. He was the first player in just over a year to complete that feat. His home run was just the 7th of his career.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 3-3 with a 2.92 ERA in 6 starts. On May 24th, he threw a 2-hit shutout against the White Sox. He is currently on a 3-game winning streak.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will hit .427 with 8 RBI, 17 runs scored and 14 stolen bases. He still leads the AL batting race with a .431 average. He is the only player in all of baseball (who qualifies for either batting title) who is hitting over .400.

Thomas Strasser, 1B, Cleveland - Thomas hit .304 with 13 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel improved drastically in May, going 3-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 7 starts.

Thanks a lot... I really enjoy updating this thread & it's very exciting to see that others enjoy it... especially with so many new ancestors soon to come...

As for Harry... He has C range as a catcher, .979% and 2 PB as ratings... B arm rating... He had D range at 1B w/ .983%...

For the season, he has committed 4 errors for a .978% with no PB's... He's thrown out 33.3% of runners (8 of 24)...

Last season, he committed 9 errors for a .982% with just 2 PB's... and as I said before, he has 5 Gold Gloves (1910, 1911, 1913, 1915, 1916)...

The White Sox had a solid 17-10 month, but thanks to Boston's and Cleveland's struggles, they managed to extend their lead to 9.5 games. The Red Sox went 11-15 in June, while the Indians were just 11-14.

The Giants held their ground by going 15-11, but their lead has shrunk to just 1 game over the 3-time defending NL champion Cardinals, who went 17-11 in June. The Cubs slumped at 13-14 this month, while the Reds were just 13-13.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Joe Cath, 1B, Detroit Tigers - He hit .366 with 16 RBI, 21 runs scored and 3 home runs.

NL - Ira Boone, 1B, Boston Braves - He hit .348 with 16 RBI and 7 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

NL - Gregory Onstott, Chicago Cubs - He was 6-1 with a 2.18 ERA and 2 shutouts.

WEB PAGES HAVE BEEN UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES

August 1, 1917

New York lost their lead in the NL after an 8-16 July performance. The Cubs went 17-8 to take over first place for a while, but it is the Cardinals who currently lead the league. St. Louis started the month with a 5-game losing streak, and they slipped to 3rd for a while, but they finished strong, winning 9 of their last 10 games.

The White Sox solidified their lead in the AL with a 16-10 month. They now have an 11-game lead and are looking like they may run away with their first pennant since 1903. Chicago traded pitcher Dex Wolfe and minor league pitcher Hans Gabriel to the Browns for an intriguing young pitcher named "Jock" Gillis, who has the potential to be a star in this league.

Also in the AL, Red Sox first baseman Michael Wrightson has already hit 15 home runs this season, shattering the old American League mark of 12. The major league record of 16 will almost certainly be broken with two months left in the season. Twice this season, including this past month, Wrightson has amazingly hit 5 home runs in a single month! In the NL, Pittsburgh's "Ray of Light" Brown has 13 home runs, putting him just 3 behind the major league record.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Eric Bates, 1B, Cleveland Indians - He hit .400 with 28 RBI and 18 runs scored.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .396 with 25 RBI, 19 runs scored and 3 home runs!

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 4-1 with a 1.13 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - Tim "Presto" Loprestor, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 6-1 with a 2.06 ERA including 1 shutout.

The Cardinals and Cubs went at each other all month, but they settled nothing. They split six head-to-head games, and after August was over, St. Louis gained just a single game in the standings. The two teams play 7 of their final 10 games against each other, so this pennant race may go down to the wire.

The White Sox ho-hummed another strong month, going 18-10 in August and gaining another game in the standings on the second place team in the AL. However, that team is now Detroit after Cleveland struggled at 15-15 on the month.

Red Sox slugger Michael Wrightson tied the major league record of 16 home runs this month. Meanwhile, Cleveland third baseman Eric Bates tied the major league record with 103 RBI. Wrightson has 93 RBI and could surpass the 103 RBI mark himself, but Bates will almost certainly end the season with the new record to his credit.

Two ancestors are tied for the lead in the AL batting race for the first time ever. Chicago's Genaro Nunez and Washington's Will Miller both have hit .365 on the season. They are both also 1-2 on the AL stolen base leaderboard. Nunez has 47 and Miller has 44. The biggest difference between these two is the fact that Nunez is always among the league leaders in OPS. He's currently second in the AL at .947. He draws more walks and usually gets more extra base-hits.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Lou Langley, 3B, St. Louis Browns - He hit .379 with 21 RBI, 19 runs scored and 3 home runs.

NL - Tarren "The Turtle" Peldmulder, RF, Cincinnati Reds - He hit .406 with 15 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Nasty Ned" Fargo, St. Louis Browns - He was 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA.

NL - Tim "Presto" Lopresto, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 6-3 with a 2.62 ERA including 1 shutout.

Ancestors:

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .314 with 12 RBI, 12 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy went 2-4 with a 4.97 ERA over 6 starts. He was also named the AL POTW on August 16th.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .257 with 15 RBI, 16 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .360 with 12 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert went 1-7 with a 4.25 over 9 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .326 with 16 RBI, 20 runs scored and 2 home runs. These were the first two homers he had hit since hitting 4 home runs in April.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .345 with 8 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .421 with 8 RBI, 9 runs scored and 7 stolen bases. He missed 2 weeks this month with a bruised jaw and he missed 2 weeks last month with inflammation in his throwing arm.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned was named POTM (see above).

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will hit .303 with 11 RBI, 16 runs scored and 7 stolen bases. He was named the AL POTW on August 2nd.

Thomas Strasser, 1B, Cleveland - With the Indians acquiring left fielder Kevin Kuszmann from the White Sox last month, Thomas has seen his playing time severely limited. He suffered in August, hitting just .229 with 9 RBI and 5 runs scored. Kuszmann did little better in full-time duty, hitting .204 with 10 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 2-3 with a 4.38 ERA in 7 starts. The A's have been a major disappointment this season. They have the worst record in all of baseball at 51-80, and their vaunted pitching staff has a 4.17 ERA, which is 2nd worst in the game.

Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry continues to struggle as a full-timer. In August, he hit just .151 with 6 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Donald "Duckie" Andrew, 2B, Cincinnati - Duckie finally got his first taste of the big leagues this month. He hit .200 (3 for 15) in limited duty with 2 RBI and a run scored. His first career hit came on August 20th against the Giants' Leonard Matthews.
