Well, it seems baseball God managed to sidline Gehrig this year, yet he still hit 37 HRs...
Also didn't Phillies trade one of their good bats (their starting catcher back then?) away? Yet Jimmie Foxx now comes alive. Oh, and Phillies now have something that resembles a starting rotation, this is really a scary team.

Earl Brucker was the Philly catcher for about 6 years. They acquired Brucker right after drafting Foxx which i thought was crazy.

Brucker hit over .300 every season he played in Philly, while Foxx obviously struggled.

Brucker was traded to Brooklyn in the middle of 32, for a young 3B named Pinky May, who looks to be a regular within 2 years.

1933-34 Offseason News and Notes

The Cubs, with another top pick, in a year without a real superstar available, takes Paul Bruno first. A starting pitcher who looks pretty decent. I don’t know Paul Bruno, and a quick google search did not shed any lite on the man.

Dutch Leonard called it a career this offseason. He could have been the greatest pitcher ever, but injuries really hurt him during his later seasons. The 1925 elbow ligament injury really altered the remaining years of his career. Still, Leonard had a spectacularrun, along with a horrible 19-48 record his final two years. His a look at that career.

Well, 1933 just passed, and I forgot that in 1933, the first all-star game was played. I missed it. I'm not a fan of all-star games. I think the whole idea, as intended is fantastic, but the way these games are played now, is embarrassing. There is nothing fun about a game, in any sport, where players go half ass and try not to get hurt. I haven't watched an all-star game of any kind in at least 10 years.

Now, while i find today's all-star games as ridiculous, I feel the designation of naming all-stars is more then warranted. Being an all-star is special. With that in mind, I will report who makes the all-star game, but i won't be talking about the game itself. It seems pointless to me.

1934 MLB Regular Season

Man, Lou Gehrig is good. I’m officially proclaiming him the greatest player in baseball history. He’s getting better every day. 100 games into this season, he (and the rest of murderers row) has the Phillies in first again. He’s hitting .393, with 39 home runs, and 132 RBI’s. He’s walked 75 times, and struck out just 31 times. Amazing.

Official Proclamation: Greatest Player Ever

Mule Suttles gets hurt again. This time, it’s a shoulder injury, and he’s out for 5 weeks. It looks like he’ll be back for the playoffs. Injuries have really effected his career numbers, but one thing they will never effect, is his career batting average. He has a lifetime average of .3737. The best lifetime average ever. He leads Lou Gehrig(who will catch him because Lou Gehrig is amazing) by .0007!

The Cubs liked their trade for Lloyd Waner so much, they went out and acquired his brother. Paul Waner.

You can do a lot worse then having two Waner’s in your outfield.

Blockbuster Trade Alert!
The New York Yankees traded 4 Time Rube Waddell award winner Bill Foster!

I’m shocked. Great pitching is so rare these days. I would guess, there’s 4 or 5 guys I would say are great right now, and Foster is easily one of them. The Yankees receive some nice prospects, but the Giants are putting something together. Foster is now paired with Tex Carleton, who is also great, to form a dynamic duo. Carleton is currently hurt, but I can’t wait to watch these guys try to take down the Phillies!

New teammates, Bill Foster and Tex Carleton

19 year old Joe DiMaggio is called up in July, and leads the Browns to a AL Pennant. The Browns have a fantastic future. Joe DiMaggio, Hank Greenberg and Arky Vaughn will take care of the offense, while Robert Griffith, dominated on the mound his rookie year. This series with Philly is a classic young vs. old matchup.

1934 World Series

The Phillies send an immediate message to the young Browns, winning game one, 11-1. The Browns don’t back down though, as they take game two, 12-8. Browns ace Robert Griffith shuts down the powerful Phillie offense in a game three, 3-2 win.

Lou Gehrig and Mule Suttles both homer as the Phillies tie the series at 2, and Babe Ruth’s third home run of the series is the difference in a 7-5, game five Philly win. Facing elimination, Joe DiMaggio goes deep twice, and Hank Greenberg hits his first of the series, and the Browns force a deciding game SEVEN!

Russ Van Atta has been a good pitcher for St. Louis. His career ERA of 3.24 has been good enough to earn him 70 starts over the past 2 seasons, but his performance in this World Series has been dreadful. 2 starts, 2 losses, 14.1 innings, 23 hits allowed, 15 earned runs.

Barney Brown is the Phillies ace. He won 21 games this year, and put up a 9.3 WAR, which is 5th best for all pitchers in baseball. He’s 2-0, with runs allowed in 18 innings this World Series.

To me, everything suggests a Phillies win. Lets see what happens.

GAME 7

Lou Gehrig and Mule Suttles get the game started, each driving in a 1st inning run, to go up 2-0.

Barney Brown, uncharacteristically, gives it back, allowing Pinky Higgins to tie the game with a 2 run shot in the 2nd.

Jimmie Foxx gets a bases loaded single in the 3rd, to give Philly back the 4-2 lead. Gehrig then scores on a Mule Suttles single, and its 5-2 Philly after five.

Arky Vaughan and Joe DiMaggio give St. Louis some life, knocking in a run each, to cut the lead to 1 in the 7th. The Phillies respond again though, scoring 3 more in their half of the inning, going up by 4.

Up by 3, going into the bottom of the ninth, Phillies manager Ed Cicotte pulls Barney Brown for Ernie Nevers, a pretty good reliever. This is what happened.

Wow! Somehow, the Browns tie game!! Amazing. They just won’t quit.

We head to extra innings, no scoring in the 10th. The Browns get something going in the 11th, but Hank Greenberg is thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, and despite 3 hits, the Browns do not score.

Mule Suttles ends the season with a walk off 3 run home run!!! The Phillies take all the Browns can give, and show them they still got some baseball left in them old bodies. Mule Suttles is the hero!!

1934-35 Offseason News and Notes

This is the weakest draft I've seen to date. Very little talent available. I suppose anything could happen, and guys can get better, but I would be very disappointed if I got the top pick and had to select Les Fleming.

Sisler didn't play very long. He retired in 1929, but only really played unitl 1926. He made 14 plate appearances those last 3 years. He doesn't have any eye popping totals because of his longevity, but a .328 career average is very worthy.

I've been really bad at changing dates. That should say 1935 season.

1935 MLB Regular Season

47 year old Tris Speaker has retired. Here, we have a guy that just did not want to leave the game. He got 35 plate appearances combined the last 4 years, and just 1 in the last 2. He should have left the game after the 1926 season, but he sat on the White Sox bench for 4 years. He’ll be in the Hall of Fame.

Tris Speaker

31 year old Bill Foster, now of the New York Giants, just won his 250th NL game. He’s got a realistic shot at Rube Waddell’s modern day record of 384. Foster though, is hurt right after this milestone win and will miss some time. That’s something he’s gonna need to avoid if he’s going to have a chance.

As we head into September, I’m shocked that neither the Giants nor the Phillies are in the Pennant race. The Reds have come out of nowhere, and have a 5 game lead on the Dodgers. In the AL, Detroit, and St. Louis are tied with 74 wins a piece. Joe DiMaggio and his young Browns should have enough to win the race though.

On the last day of the season, both the St. Louis Browns, and the Cincinnati Reds lead their leagues by just 1 game. The Tigers and Dodgers each need to win, with some help to force a playoff.

The Reds end up losing to the Pirates 6-4, opening the door for the Dodgers. They however blow their game in the 9th inning, as Lou Gehrig’s 2 run single wins the game for Philly 4-3. The Reds win the NL Pennant.

Detroit, with the help of 5 ChiSox errors, win 6-5, putting the pressure back on the youthful Browns. Ace Robert Griffith surprisingly allows 8 runs in 4 innings, and the Browns lose 9-5. A 1 game playoff between Detroit and St. Louis will be played.

42 year old Guy Morton, who has a career record of 350-351, will start his 709th game for Detroit. Roy Sherid, whose lost 19 or more games 4 times in his 7 year career goes for St. Louis.

There isn’t much drama in this one. The Tigers scored 4 early runs, and cruised to an easy 6-2 win. The Tigers win the AL Pennant.

These 2 teams are kind of strangers to the post season. The Reds have won 2 championships, the last one being in 1923. That was their only World Series appearance in the last 22 years. Detroit has 1 World Series win, way back in 1917. They won the AL 4 times in 5 years, and haven’t been back since.

An easy 5 game win for the Tigers. They didn’t have any problem scoring runs and never seemed like there was any danger in losing this series. Dizzy Dean is on the cusp of what I like to call ‘Greatness.’ This will hopefully push him over that edge.

1935-36 Offseason News and Notes

After last years weak draft class, this year has two Superstar potential players in it. Ted Williams and Bob Feller will each join the league, and hopefully craft HOF careers.

I know Red Sox fans aren’t gonna like this, but Ted Williams is the first overall draft pick, of the ….New York Yankees. Yep. He’s a Yankee.

What a year to grab the first pick. Bob Feller goes 2nd, to the Pittsburgh Pirates. They now have Satchel Paige and Bob Feller. WOW! Feller is developed amazingly for a 17 year old. He’ll start his career in the majors.

In a move that mirrors reality, the Phillies have traded Babe Ruth, to the franchise formerly known as the Boston Braves just 1 year later then it happened in real life.

The Bees give up 2 decent players for an aging Babe Ruth, who just recorded his 2000th RBI, and is 13 home runs away from 600. Ruth, at 41, has seen is skills decline, but still hit .301 last season. I’m really rooting for him to get to 600.
